Marcus’s counterattack was on point, his knife clashing against the lupine’s claws and stopping them from raking across his spine. Metal clashed against metal with a loud clang before the Fullbringer pivoted, building up energy and releasing a quick blast from his finger. Such a tactic would normally be effective as a quick counterattack, and indeed, Shine hit the wolf’s head directly before bursting into being, the explosion contained yet easily enough to cause a creature’s head to come apart. And indeed, it did so, scattering the ash in all directions and leaving a headless wolf… for all of a few seconds, before the ash started to reform into its original shape. The wolf lacked mass and form, simply created by the ash arranged in a certain shape, so the effect was… well, less than impressive.
Of course, there was also the mark placed on the wolf’s claws, the only solid object thus far. When Marcus’s Shadow Punch came, it actually hit something rather than dissipating ash… but to no effect. While Shadow Punch was a useful technique, Marcus’s strike only had a brief 600 force against the 800 maintaining the claws. The shock from the impact still scattered dust, leaving those claws floating before a leg stump that ended at the first joint until the ash managed to bring itself back together to reform the rest of the leg. Clearly the attacker was no easy foe, if he could take Marcus’s Shadow Punch with minimal effect; although a clever response, it just wasn’t enough to stop the creature.
Vesta’s bullets and Jaeger’s claws were no more effective, though they didn’t encounter any solid objects in the manner that Marcus had. Their attacks scattered ash everywhere, with Jaeger’s attack blowing away a particularly large portion of the gray wolf before it, but in the end they were ineffective. The wolves kept reforming. However, Luke’s decisiveness was in their favor this time; though the ashen creatures would pull themselves together after a few moments, that was a few moments that the party could get moving, making their way towards the stairs. Zeich even slowed the reformation of his wolves to give them a bit of a head start; Luke had good instincts when it came to split-second decisions, it seemed.
This would enable the trio to reach the bottom of the stairwell before the wolves would start charging down the hallway, silently padding through the corridor. The three employees were left with one direction to go: up, and towards the surface. But here they’d have to choose: would they stop at the ground floor and make their way out the exit, or would they aim to figure out the cause of this whole situation? There were many factors to consider: was Kazura still in the building, and in danger? Had the other employees managed to escape, or had they gone deeper into the trap, needing rescue? And of course, there was the slow spread of gray across each of the three; by now, the lack of color had spread up across Marcus’s arm and even his shoulder, staining the sleeve covering them in that same monochrome shade as well. Luke was showing similar signs of infection, though his stopped just below the shoulder, and was mostly hidden under the black of his summoned outfit. Vesta was doing far better than the other two, but her entire hand was still coated, and the gray stopped just above the wrist.
With the wolves at their heels and the situation still dire, what would the three do?
