-Appearance-
Height/Weight: [6'2” / 180 lbs.]
Physical Description:
Zeich has changed significantly since becoming a Vizard, in more ways than one. Though he still maintains a lot of his appearance from his time as a Shinigami, there have been several important changes that have developed over time. The Vizard is still wearing his hair long, though now it rests at the small of his back and is always kept in a long ponytail. The bangs are shortened somewhat to allow for better vision, and now his eyes are far more visible than they have ever been. And speaking of his eyes, that is one of the more noticeable changes since Zeich left Soul Society; instead of the brown-tinted amber that they had once been, the irises are now a bright, burnished gold color that seems to glow slightly in the dark. Despite the blindness that came at the hands of his Inner Hollow, the eyes themselves are completely clear of film or clouding, giving no physical sign of Zeich's disability. The pupils are less dilated than they were, the lines around the eyes eased along with the tension that used to fill the former Shinigami, and overall, the man's neutral expression is one with a hint of resigned amusement, a soft smile on his lips and eyes that are tired-looking for his age, but are still bright. Despite his relaxed expression, those eyes always have a predatory gaze about them, sharp and piercing through any emotional or mental defenses, as if he were staring into your soul.
Zeich's frame hasn't changed a bit, remaining lithe and trim. He's hardly imposing with his slight frame, making him seem to be harmless, though the truth is that he is far from it; while it isn't highly visible on his body, the young man is fairly muscled and possesses a lean strength, his body's appearance belying the power that it holds. His shoulders are fairly narrow, and his arms lack much definition, though another change is present on the latter. Few people knew about them before, but for a long time Zeich had possessed two sets of tattoos, one down each arm, in the form of a trio of sixes. The “Mark of the Beast” has been purged from the Vizard's arms, ironically enough considering that he has taken control of the Hollow within himself, and uses his inner “beast's” power freely in combat. Still, now that the tattoos are gone, leaving his arms bare, the former Shinigami no longer wears the arm bindings that he used to possess as well.
Through more constant exposure to the sun, Zeich's skin has taken on a slightly darker cast, but after looking at his initially pale skin, it is barely enough to make the mark at “average,” in its tone. Being from a large mix of nationalities and backgrounds, it is difficult to pin the Vizard down to any one race, so instead he refers to himself as a “mutt” of sorts, though with less disdain than before and more amusement, given his habit of using wolf metaphors. The more prominent nationalities are Polish and Nordic, but at a glance even they are difficult to discern; it is just hard to call Zeich any one thing, and he's fine with that. He dislikes the idea of defining a person by their background anyway, though that partially stems from the prejudice as he gets as a Vizard, a Shinigami with a Hollow's powers; Shinigami always assume that anything relating to Hollows are bad.
Zeich's body is also freed of most scars, thanks to a little help from a source he keeps anonymous; sometime after the events of the battle with Adalo that had fully revealed his Hollowfied self, Zeich's body had to be healed extensively, and in the process both the scars and tattoos were removed from his skin, leaving it clean and unmarred. The only one that remained, at the Vizard's request, is the rope burn around his neck, the last mark of his living existence and a sign of the pact he unwillingly made with the Hollow that now resides within him. The scar is a thick band of darker brown tissue around his neck from where the rope drew tight and pulled the curtains on his life as a human, aged with the years yet always present. Though this scar is often kept concealed, it is not difficult to spot should Zeich's scarf slip either.
The Vizard's clothing is very typical at a glance, though there are a few notable oddities that draw eyes to him as well. His clothing consists of a short-sleeved t-shirt in white that rests comfortably on his frame, unmarked and plain. Over top that is a long-sleeved gray windbreaker, one that is kept unzipped unless it is cold, hanging loosely at his sides and along his narrow shoulders. The former Shinigami's arms are no longer hidden by the black wrappings that he had kept on them before now that the tattoos are removed, and as a result, the windbreaker's sleeves are often pushed up, bunched around his elbows. Each hand is wrapped in fingerless black gloves with reinforced knuckles for enhanced physical blows and for protection during such attacks, with a square cut in the back of them and loose wrists for freedom of movement.
Zeich bears a few accessories as well, some of which were not present before. The one notable remnant of his time as a Shinigami is the rust-brown scarf that he wears around his neck in two loops to conceal the scar on his neck. Though he is determined to keep the scar as a reminder of his past, he does not flaunt it either, and keeps the scarf on at almost all times, removed only when it becomes necessary. In addition, a small pair of black sunglasses with thin frames that wrap around his face now perch on his nose, the lenses themselves long ovals that rest over each eye. These are merely decorative, given the former Shinigami's blindness, but Zeich has taken to wearing them anyway, partially to conceal his identity.
A pair of studded leather belts around the waist in an X-pattern covers the long jeans that Zeich now wears as opposed to the former leather pants he had made part of his uniform in the past. Each belt bears a loop for his weapons; one holds his Zanpaktou, Tsukikage, while the other holds his second, but smaller sword, Haiiro. This causes a slightly lopsided look to Zeich's left side, where he keeps his Zanpaktou, but he tends to counter this look with his right hand on his hip when he's relaxed or idle, providing some sense of balance. The jeans themselves are faded and have a worn look about them, but are intact and lacking in holes or tears. These jeans end above a pair of thick sneakers, though these are replaced by thick leather boots at times depending on the weather or the location to which Zeich is traveling.
Zeich also carries a couple of other accessories on him at times. One is a long black cloak that can cover his entire body and hang down to his ankles, including a hood that he can pull over his head. This, combined with the mask he has, allows him to conceal his features from unwanted eyes. The mask itself is special; though it is made of simple materials, easy to damage, it is carved into an exact replica of Zeich's Vizard mask, a carved wolf's-head with its ears curved back and its teeth bared, whorls of red starting beneath the eye and moving to each cheek. With mask and cloak together, Zeich can completely cover himself, showing nothing but the golden eyes he never had as a Shinigami. These are both easily removable should combat occur, and easily replaceable if they are damaged in an attack. This allows him to keep himself concealed from other Shinigami.

-Personality-
Note that all personality updates are an end result and may not reflect on Zeich's current state at the moment, as his personality is in transition from his time as a Shinigami to his future as a Vizard.
Dislikes:
- Tsukikage – Unsurprisingly, Zeich has very little love for his Inner Hollow. Though he is trying to forge some sort of bond between the two of them, the Vizard still dislikes the creature that took away his whole life, killed one of his Zanpaktou spirits, and had tormented him since the day it awoke. He dislikes Tsukikage's attitude, his desire for bloodshed and death; though he is working to change those, to somehow reform a Hollow against all odds, Zeich feels that he is fighting an uphill battle.
- Trouble with Shinigami – Though it sounds like a generic dislike, Zeich is very careful about causing trouble between himself and other Shinigami. Most of the time, when he suspects he can encounter another Shinigami, he will go out in cloak and mask—not his Vizard mask, of course, but the replica—in order to hide his face or general appearance. The last thing he needs is a Shinigami spotting a wanted criminal.
- Hollows – Though again generic, this is a bias that has carried over from Zeich's time as a Shinigami. Though he has taken the time to become more tolerant and understanding of other races due to his own status as an undesirable, the Vizard is very uncomfortable around Hollows, a fear that has only been reinforced by Tsukikage over time. He is a little better around Arrancar, as they are like the mirrored versions of Vizard, but he still does get edgy.
- Excessive Idealism – While he's not as adverse to the idea of idealism as he used to be, Zeich is also practical and down to earth. Though he appreciates hope for the future, the thought of making things better, he doesn't like when people try to defy reality as a whole. You want to change something about yourself, or improve yourself? That's good idealism. You want to change a whole world in a day? That's just fantasy.
- Acceptance of Weakness – Zeich hates to see those who have let themselves fall and don't even bother to pick themselves up. He has been to that low point previously; he has been beaten down, has had his body nearly stolen by the Hollow within him, and has been cast out and branded a traitor. Maybe it is his fate to be thrown away, to be consumed by the darkness in him, but he never stops fighting it. He believes that it is possible to change things; maybe not immediately, maybe not in his lifetime, but he always struggles to work his way forward to something better, as long as it's practical. Those who just accept it without trying to do better don't deserve pity; they deserve scorn.
- Subservience – Zeich understands the concept of having a superior, of having someone who is above you and gives orders. While he's never been fond of having a superior, he can accept it and work with it, as that is a structure designed to make an organization stable. However, those who whine and grovel at another's feet, not willing to stand up tall and proud of themselves, are frowned upon. Those who would be nothing but stepping stones beneath another's feet are pitiful.
- Corruption – Though he formerly disliked society as a whole, Zeich has come to understand and embrace parts of it, starting to draw close to others and learning just why the gathering of people can be a positive thing. However, it also has the potential to fester and lead to corruption as certain individuals attempt to capitalize on that gathering. It is these individuals, and the corruption that they represent, that Zeich dislikes.
- Sweets – Zeich's palate hasn't changed much since he left Soul Society, and though he doesn't dislike sweets for the same reasons as before, he just finds that they don't agree with his tastes.
- Loud Noises – With his sight gone, Zeich's other senses have to pick up the slack, and as a result he tends to rely on them heavily. Loud noises override other noises; it's like a bright light in your eyes, preventing you from seeing anything else but that light. Convert that to sound form, and Zeich finds himself “blinded” again in a new way when his hearing is overpowered by loud sounds.
- His Old Self – Zeich looks back on his past frequently, recalling the time that he spent in Soul Society. He reflects on who he was, and hates it; he was too cold, too distant, more machine than human. He did what he was instructed was “right”, and until the threat of his Inner Hollow consuming his soul arose, never once questioned it. Now, he realizes how little personality he had possessed back then, how inhuman he was. He vows to never go back to that again.
- Pessimism – While Zeich does prefer people to be practical and avoid excessive optimism, the same holds true for the opposite end of the spectrum; expecting the worst in order to prevent a negative surprise is one thing, but constantly expecting doom, death, and destruction makes him question why one even bothers living under such troubling thoughts.
Likes:
- Light Gambling – Though he doesn't do it often, or for more than peanuts, figuratively speaking, Zeich occasionally uses the deck of cards he has on him to play games with others. Seeing as he can “see” the cards thanks to his training to regain some measure of his sight, he does have an advantage, though he doesn't capitalize on it much. He usually leaves with a small profit, and just enjoys the companionship the game gets him.
- Practicality – Zeich highly values those who are practical in nature. Acceptance of what is does not mean giving in; it simply means that one understands the situation and can work more effectively to make it work in one's favor.
- Combat Efficiency – In combat, Zeich is very efficient, aiming for quick blows that minimize the use of energy in order to make his fewer attacks count for more. He values this in his allies as well; he considers it foolish to use excessive energy or force except in the most dire situations, and so if his allies show the judgment he expects of himself, he tends to be pleased with them.
- Open-Mindedness – Zeich values open-minded people, because in his head, these are people who are willing to change and accept unusual ideas. People who are willing to look past labels like “Vizard” and see the person who is behind them are ones that the former Shinigami will usually associate himself with. He himself tries to show this same mindset, though it's often hard to shake some of his previous Shinigami habits.
- Darkness – Literal darkness, not metaphorical. Zeich is fond of the darkness because it reduces the handicap that his blindness puts on him, leaving others in a similar position of lacking sight. However, this turns the handicap in Zeich's favor; accustomed to blindness, he doesn't need to make adjustments to his combat style that others may.
- Haiiro – Despite his mixed feeling towards his Zanpaktou spirit, Zeich still cares deeply for the wolf, and is often protective of him despite the distance that has grown between them. The two are both seeking to close the distance, but guilt and grudges hold them back; nonetheless, the affection is there, and Haiiro is one of the few people Zeich cares for as much as he does.
Flaws:
- Socially Awkward – Due to his walled-off personality from the past, Zeich never got much in the way of social interaction, often coming off as harsh and apathetic, unable to connect with anyone but his own Zanpaktou spirit. At that point, it's little different than talking to yourself, so he has little experience with human interaction, though he is trying to learn.
- Paranoid – Though he endeavors to be more open and understanding of people, old habits are hard to break, and as a result Zeich's first impression of anyone is treated with biased suspicion, causing the Vizard to assume “guilty until proven innocent” with all but the most obvious allies. With Shinigami seeing him as a monster and a criminal, as well as Hollows and the like out for his blood, he can't be too careful with who he trusts.
- Blind – Zeich is completely blind, unable to see through the use of his eyes due to a spiritual injury caused during the fight to control Tsukikage's power. Any healers who attempt to reverse this wound would find it festering with a dark Reiatsu, unable to remove the injury by any means. He's adapted to this with time, but he does still miss the sights and color that came with his vision. Now, his world is dark.
- Sensitive – Zeich is very sensitive on an emotional level now, the tough and suspicious side of him more of a thin facade rather than a cold wall that had once kept all others out. He's more prone to outbursts, both positive and negative, and the intensity at which he feels these emotions is unfamiliar to him, making him uncomfortable when they happen.
Habits:
- Sense of Humor – Despite his initially cold personality, as Zeich lightens up, he is shown to have a surprisingly keen sense of humor, one that had just been buried back in his days as a Shinigami. Though he's not one to crack jokes obnoxiously, he's much more given to the occasional light-hearted quip, particularly in battle. His sense of humor can use some work, but it's a work in progress.
- Playing Cards – More of a hobby than anything else, Zeich uses the very same deck he used in learning how to “see” despite his blindness in games of chance. When he's idle, he's often seen shuffling them and pulling a card from random at the deck before identifying it, keeping his skills sharp.
- Toying About – In combat, Zeich is far more lenient with enemies that are not an immediate high level of risk for him, and enjoys toying with them casually, showing that he is indeed the alpha and will not be so easily toppled. He takes some small amusement in proving such superiority.
- Wolf Metaphors – Zeich's vocabulary has changed slightly since leaving, and he often talks about how he sees himself as a “stray,” one who has been forced from his “pack” in Soul Society. He sees the various organizations as packs of their own, including the squads within Soul Society, with the leaders as the “alpha” of each one. Such metaphors show up often in his language, and combined with the feral golden eyes, one sometimes wonders at the influence from his two lupine spirits, and if he's more man or wolf.
Fears:
- Loss of Control – Though Zeich has gained the grudging respect of his Inner Hollow and thus laid claim to the creature's powers, he still fears Tsukikage. Memories of the destruction caused by his loss of control in the Rukongai are still branded into his heart, with the deaths and losses all heavy on his heart. As a result, Zeich fears the loss of control again, especially in crowded areas. There's no telling when he could suddenly find himself at Tsukikage's mercy, so he makes sure to keep a close eye on the Hollow.
- The Destruction of Soul Society – With all that has been going on lately, with the invasions from the Vandenreich and the attacks by Arrancar, Soul Society is in a bad state. They have many enemies, and Zeich fears the loss of his former home. He may be an outcast, but the Vizard will do whatever he can for it, regardless of how they see him.
- Permanent Exile – One of Zeich's goals is to rejoin Soul Society despite his status as a Vizard, but he knows how unlikely it is, and fears the possibility that his exile is permanent.
Goals:
- To Protect Soul Society – Yup, even as a Vizard, rejected by Soul Society and branded as an outcast and traitor to be killed on sight, Zeich still desires to protect his old home. Regardless of the reasons for his status as a traitor, the former Shinigami feels that it is due to fear, and a lack of understanding about the control Vizards have, not to mention their previous encounters with other Vizards. One day, he hopes to forge a bond of trust between the two factions.
- To Create Peace Between Vizard and Shinigami – More than anything else, Zeich wishes to reconcile the two factions, bringing them together and once more allowing the cast out Vizards into their old home. Not only would they be highly beneficial to the protection of Soul Society, but it would also help them spot any other potential Vizards before takeover by the Inner Hollow and threats to Soul Society could emerge.
- To Go Home – Even if Vizards in general cannot be accepted, Zeich wants nothing more to go home. It's an odd desire for a man who had walled himself off from others, who had been cold, stoic, a soldier who was more concerned with his duty than one who enjoyed the presence of others. Yet despite that, he wants nothing more than to go back to the place where he used to belong.
- To Reform Tsukikage – Probably Zeich's most daunting goal, the Vizard hopes to eventually teach Tsukikage some humanity, breaking free of the standard Hollow desire for death and feeding and instead teaching the dark wolf some humility and respect.
Alignment: Passive Good
Overall Personality:
“...Can I help you?”
Though not nearly as cold or distant as before, Zeich is still a rather quiet fellow. No longer attempting to push others away or even ignoring them, the Vizard now feels awkward in casual conversation and has a hard time expressing himself. Often, it feels like he's still keeping people at arm's length, though it's less because of a conscious effort to do so, and more because he just doesn't know how to associate with others on a more casual basis. Life was always duty and orders before he became a Vizard, forced to leave the military-like Soul Society. Now that the structure of society is gone for Zeich, he finds himself floundering to find his place in the world that has opened up before him, and more than not he's lost in the vast spread of choices suddenly given to him.
Because of this unusual sense of freedom, Zeich finds himself struggling to adjust to what others might seem as a “normal” life. He's never been one to see time as “free”, never been one to seek entertainment or companionship. As a Shinigami, life had been about work, and there had always been more for those who sought it. He had never sought to establish connections with others because it had never been necessary; he had subordinates on hand as necessary, and his rank permitted him to petition help through orders rather than as favors. Friends and companions were something others had, fun was a concept he never understood. Duty and orders, those were the former life that Zeich lived by.
Released from the strict schedule of his former routines, Zeich often finds himself in a position akin to drowning in his excess of time. He no longer has his work as a Shinigami, and he knows nothing else of the world. He has no friends, and the only companions he knows are the two spirits sharing his soul. As a result, much of his time is spent drifting from place to place, person to person; with no immediate goal and no direction, he's often unsure of his next step. This has the habit of sometimes making him appear weak, or even low in self-confidence, and it's an easy mistake to make.
“Don't mistake me for pathetic. It'll be the last one you make.”
But a mistake it is. Despite his lack of direction, Zeich maintains a very powerful presence with his personality if prodded. Though he often remains distant and has a hard time connecting to others, anger or frustration often harden his attitude, taking him from the quiet, withdrawn fellow to one who can be a bit more aggressive with his attitude. The Vizard has a strong dislike of those who look down on him for his quiet personality, seeing them as intruders on his way of acting. If he chooses to keep his distance as he learns to understand others, then that is his prerogative; others should know better than to judge, or better, should know not to interfere when it is obviously an unwelcome act.
Of course, aggression does not mean that Zeich is immediately raring to fight, either; his first attack is always with his words and body language. Eyes that shine like gold can become as hard as steel in a heartbeat, and the Vizard's glare alone is often enough to deter those who are on a lesser level than he is. Combined with his spiritual aura and generally aggressive posture, intimidation is the first line of defense that the former Shinigami has against those who would seek to disturb him. Words are often blunt and direct, and depending on the situation, can be delivered in a number of tones ranging from monotone to slow-boiling fury. Regardless of how he acts, however, this is just the calm before the storm; a persistent foe can easily awaken the dark anger that rests within Zeich.
“You have made your decision to die...”
Perhaps a remnant of Tsukikage's final possession, Zeich has a slight tendency towards anger as a situation intensifies, especially when he is pushed to desperation. It isn't a berserk anger, but it's not a cold one either; it starts out as a small flame, a coarseness to his words and a slight increase in the scope of his combat offenses, but it begins to burn brighter as the catalyst continues to draw it out. Full anger may not be a mindless, berserk rage, but Zeich certainly becomes far more aggressive. Shifting from quick-paced attrition to direct strikes, he maintains his calculating combat skill while steadily pressing his advantages in order to defeat a foe more readily.
“...Yeah.”
Outside of these situations in which his temper flares up, Zeich tends to be very quiet when interacting with others. He often finds himself at a loss for words, unsure on how to react to others as they speak to him. Often the Vizard comes off as a little awkward, especially when pressed; embarrassment is not uncommon, since Zeich feels out of place in most situations. He doesn't know how “friends” treat one another, or even how to work with others outside of a chain of command. He knows how to give and receive orders, not ask favors or take requests. He doesn't know how to make smalltalk, or even just casually converse; most of his conversations have him coming off as exceptionally stiff and serious, unable to loosen up and become comfortable with others.
“...Haiiro, you explain.”
“Gladly, Master!”
Of the two companions Zeich has, Haiiro is the more talkative and sociable. As the Vizard's former Zanpaktou spirit, now bound to another blade in an effort to prevent Tsukikage from consuming him, the wolf is very understanding of his master's thoughts and mindset. This allows Haiiro to explain where Zeich feels uncomfortable, conveying the Vizard's words without the filter of discomfort that his master feels. As Zeich is a master of the Spiritual Projection technique, he is able to summon his Zanpaktou spirit to his side frequently, allowing the wolf to act as the intermediary between the stoic Vizard and anyone he needs to communicate to in detail. Many are surprised by this means of communication, but those who get to know Zeich will understand that it is the easiest way for him to get around his difficulties in socialization.
Haiiro, however, possesses his own personality and will, and this often manifests itself in very mischievous ways. Though the wolf refers to Zeich as “Master,” the term isn't one of submission, but respect to the man whose soul he is a part of. As a result, it is not uncommon for Haiiro to tease his companion, making occasional sly remarks and displaying an amusing sense of humor that seems completely opposite to Zeich's personality. Yet this wolf is a part of the Vizard's soul, hinting that somewhere within the man there is someone more human and less soldier, once he learns to understand and accept it. Until then, Haiiro is happy to fill the gaps with his own cheerful and outgoing personality, making him quite the skilled socialite.
“Shut up, mutt. You talk too much.”
“Behave, Tsukikage.”
Tsukikage, the Inner Hollow that resides within Zeich's very soul, is quite the opposite of Haiiro, closer in personality to Zeich but taking it to extremes. He's gruff, easily irritated, and overbearing. Bitter at losing to a human and being forced into what he calls captivity, Tsukikage can be a little childish at times, lashing out at both Zeich and Haiiro mentally at the strangest of times. He finds his entertainment in baiting Haiiro, who is more than eager to leap into argument with the creature that devoured his mate, and because of this their master often finds himself in a war between the two, having to silence them both, sometimes through sheer force of will. Haiiro will generally back down if asked, but Tsukikage seems to enjoy the attention, and uses it to further taunt the two he deems to be his “jailers.”
Despite this attitude he has towards Zeich, Tsukikage's relationship with the Vizard is a strange one. Yes, he is bitter, feeling like a captive and a tool, but at the same time, Zeich has started to make an effort towards treating Tsukikage as he would any other person. The Vizard has actually put an effort into trying to be civil with his forced companion, hoping that somehow he can create some sense of civility in the Hollow. Who knows; perhaps if he can reform his companion, perhaps their time together might actually become enjoyable. Haiiro disagrees, believing that this is an impossible task, but nonetheless, he trusts his master, allowing the man to make his decisions on how to handle the rebellious Tsukikage.[/quote]
