A cemetery is hardly ever a cheery place. This was almost doubly the case in Ustalav. Even the most personable of Pharasman priests who generally tend to such locations possess a somewhat dour personality. And, perhaps even more worrying, you never really knew if some of the lingering magic from the reign of the Whispering Tyrant would trickle in and disturb the resting dead. The Pharasmins did certainly make that less of a possibility, but not even they could get to every single dead person. And, of course, there was the tales of those undead who rose naturally, due to some mistreatment during life or improper handling in death. But in the end such places were necessary in the Immortal Principality, and everyone would visit one at least once during their life before being laid to their final rest in death.
It is in one such cemetery, one known as the Restlands, that our story begins. You have all been invited to take part in the funeral of one Petros Lorrimor, a former adventurer and explorer of some note. After nearly 40 years of narrow escapes, ravenous monsters, and trap-filled ruins across the world, it seems that the Professor finally met his end not at the hands of some exotic beast or ancient deathtrap, but by stray masonry from a ruined prison falling on his head.
So, after a while of traveling, you arrive the small town of Ravengro (Formerly known as Raven's Grotto due to the prevalence of the birds in the area). The people seem somewhat insular, steering out of each of your ways as you walk towards the Restlands, whispering amongst themselves as you pass. Once you arrive at the Restlands, you see only a small group of five other attendees, all gathered around a well-made pine casket. The trim attractive woman who's eyes are still red and puffy from crying is most likely Professor Lorrimor's adopted daughter, Kendra. Attempting to comfort her some is a middle-aged man, somewhat on the pudgy side. The lines on his face suggest that he spends most of his time smiling, though now seems to be an occasion where that does not hold true. Two of the other mourners, a man and a woman both on the older side, are dressed in better fashion than most of the others present, something that suggests they may be part of the ruling council of the town. A 13-year-old boy seems to be idly kicking rocks, and bears a passing resemblance to the man attempting to comfort Kendra. Lastly, there's a lithe woman who seems to perpetually smell of various chemicals, and appears to be missing her eyebrows, both signs of an alchemist. They look to each of you as you arrive, silent but far more accepting than the others you've seen in town so far. Then, once the last of you arrived, Kendra cleared her throat.
"Thank you all for coming," she would say, her voice quiet. "I know you all have your own troubles and worries, but I'm grateful that you could come to help me through this and pay my father some last respects. Most of the others I invited said that they were too busy with their own affairs to travel here. And with the way things have been in town recently, I wasn't sure that anyone from Ravengro would want to come. So... Thank you. All of you. Now... Who would like to be the pallbearers?"
