Recruitment Day -(New Shinō Grads and Squad Reps Welcome)

Participants:  New/recent/squad-less Shinō Academy Grads that haven't joined a squad or may be unsure of which squad to join. Also, Captains, Vice-Captains or other valid Gotei 13 respective squad members interested in tempting any of the grads.

Plotline:  Shinō Academy has recently held yet another graduation ceremony with promising new recruits. While many have traveled the full rigorous academic path spanning the typical fifty year span to graduate, others have taken longer, others, less time. As with every other recruitment day, some squad representative show up, while others can't be bothered. The level of interest is often dictated by the interest in batches vs individual new graduates. Some squad representatives risk not showing up at all, and instead, issue personal invitations to new recruits to tour respective squad barracks and meet captains face to face on their own terms (squad reps are also allowed to send/write a personal invitation to recruits they are interested in rather than RPing in this thread in detail: include name of person who issued the invitation, their squad, a message that ensnares the interest of the new recruit, requirements that must be met to join the squad, and the time of the meeting). 

Estimated Enemy Strength:  N/a really. There are no legitimate enemies. While there may be the opportunity for display or sparring matches to tempt either new recruits or captains into taking interest in a particular party, this depends on individual circumstances.

[Mamenoka, Utsukushī]

“Did you catch a fish for me?” Her voice was as sweet as honey, her tone, as beautiful to the ear as precious gems are to the eye.

“Yup mama, I caught it in the old wicker basket, the one with the big hole” Little Utsukushī’s voice was small and mousey, even for a child his age. As the six-year old watched his mother chopping vegetables in their makeshift kitchen, he marveled at her. She was so pretty. Her hair looked so lovely when she tied it back while cooking. It was the same color as the wildflowers growing by the stream; lilac was it? “Yeah, mama’s hair is just like lilacs. And her eyes…” the young boy thought. The woman’s eyes were like actual gold, and they shined with all the luster of newly minted ryō.

“Yeah, like ryō.”

As the boy completed this thought, his enthusiastic little legs ran in pace, fish held firmly in his arms. The only thing more exciting to Utsukushī than the idea of having fresh fish for supper, was the thought that everyone thought he looked like her. That pleased him more than anything.

As the dying evening sun lit the kitchen, washing their two forms in the last of its warmth, a smile found home on his baby-smooth face. They didn’t have much, but moments like this were just about as perfect as perfect can be.

A shadow grew in the window, and its maker, a single crow, stood perched in the window. The darkness it cast seemed to eat the light, as if it were alive, as if it possessed a growing hunger for it. Utsukushī’s gaze locked onto the bird. Its unusual appearance was one he’d not seen before. This crow didn’t possess the lustrous black feathers of crows he’d seen previously. Nor did it have curious beady eyes or an oil-colored beak. This crow had matte feathers, devoid of any and all shine. This crow had bone-white eyes and a beak that matched.

Unbeknownst to the woman, the bird’s gaze was fixated on her. At least, until it gained interest in her child. Its head turned towards him with an unnatural slowness, with a methodical control that whispered “I am not trying to be noticed-but I don’t care if I am.”

Utsukushī locked eyes with the unusual animal. They both stood in silent engagement, each with blatant curiosity for the other. That was, until something changed in the lilac-haired boy. His eyes grew wide, his mouth opened in silent horror, and then his knees began to shake. And then his knees grew wet from his own piss.

And then…

As he opened his eyes, his vision was met with the wooden panels of the Shinō Academy’s live-in dorms. Utsukushī woke from his sleep, beckoned by the excitement of his dormmates. He lay still without moving for some time. "I haven't had that one in a while." He began to take in the sounds of the footsteps of the other graduates. He listened as those around him expressed their hopes for one squad or another as well as their fears. Utsukushī couldn’t relate to their excitement. Instead, upon waking, he carried a level of anxiety he hadn’t felt since he first began his journey through Las Noches decades ago. He had but a single goal in mind and he could barely piece together the beginnings of a plan to accomplish it. “Justice for mama…” He reminded himself. Not that it was necessary. His every waking moment since that day had been spent inching his way toward that.

He took a single deep breath before leaping to his feet. He folded his sleeping mat before thinking of the possibilities that awaited him on this day. He would either succeed or fail. The choices he made today would no doubt determine whether he’d meet success on a day that was likely years away.

“How can I best gather the information I need on noble families previously untouchable by these hands?” Everything up to this day has been practice in comparison to the trials he will face later on. The days when he could safely lay his head down in these dormitories would soon pass. Whether or not he ever experiences safety again depends entirely on the trustworthiness of the squad or organization that recruits him. Of course, that is IF anyone deems him worthy of recruiting.

They would no doubt look at applicable skills and references from instructors. All of this would be found in the personal files of the new graduates. Unfortunately, none of the graduates had the slightest idea of what was in those, much less where those could be found. Utsukushī of course only theorized that they even existed, otherwise how would a prospective know what they would be getting with a perspective recruit? Sure there were display bouts, kido presentations, and the like, but how would a recruiter know about the things that slip through the cracks of these intentional displays?

Utsukushī could make an estimated guess based on what he allowed his instructors to see. While he only had the most basic knowledge and know-how when it came to the healing arts, his other instructors in other areas of Shinigami Arts would likely be more than satisfied with what he showed them. If these personal files exist, recruiters would know that he is good at creatively repurposing kido, excellent with swordplay, and just decent with hand-to-hand combat. On a non-Shinigami Arts basis, they would know that he came from the outskirts of Rukongai and that he sought employment here decades ago. They would know that he worked doing janitor work before being accepted as a student at a young age. He disappeared for decades only to show up later on with the applicable skills necessary to graduate from this place in only one year as opposed to fifty. They would know all of this.

However, there are a few important details Utsukushī knows for a fact that would not appear. Firstly, his desire to investigate and heavily police the noble families. This is the only way to ultimately achieve vengeance for his mother’s murder. Secondly, the existence of his shikai. While the one instructor he trusted was aware of these things, he was assured that they would not share this information. Though, at this point the asauchi he was given has changed from its previous katana form into a tachi. A discerning eye would either assume that Utsukushī has either discovered his shikai, or that he is close. However, a less discerning eye may think that he simply requested a smaller asauchi to better fit his small frame.

After bathing and performing the standard morning rituals he ate breakfast with his fellow grads, speaking only when spoken to. He helped to set up all the necessary details for the recruitment event an hour or so beforehand, before once again joining his peers, only this time for a midday meal.

When the time for the event arrive, Utsukushī was one of the last graduates to join in. This was only after settling his nerves and curbing his anxiety.

[Benjiro Hiroto]

As the first rays of light began to peek through the window, Benjiro's eyes slowly fluttered open, looking up at the blank ceiling in his room. Where others saw a blank wall devoid of purpose, Benjiro saw an opportunity and a reminder that the day ahead was filled with possibilities, and he had the power to shape them. It was always nice to reassess oneself and renew one's perspective. This was Benjiro's secret to continued growth after all, starting the day right. He took a deep breath in and let out a sigh of contentment, feeling the gentle weight of the day ahead pressing down on him, yet also feeling a sense of purpose for the tasks he would undertake. He knew that the day ahead would be difficult, a choice he had made for himself, but he was ready for it.

He began his morning with a mantra and a prayer, a small yet powerful ritual to recenter himself and give him guidance throughout the day. The mantra he recited, "Namu Amida Butsu", translated to "I take refuge in Amida Buddha", was a powerful statement of faith and devotion for him. It signified his belief in the infinite compassion and wisdom of Amida Buddha, and his trust in the Buddha's promise of enlightenment and salvation through the practice of Buddhism. For Benjiro, reciting this mantra was a way to connect with his spirit and to align his mind, heart, and actions with the Buddhist principles of compassion, wisdom, and non-duality. By repeating this mantra, he felt a sense of inner peace and clarity, and a renewed commitment to his spiritual path and his duty as a Shinigami. In the midst of this meditation, he began to hear the beginnings of a voice speaking from his Asau-no, his Zanpakuto. He wasn't sure when his soul imprinted on his Asauchi, but it had, and he could feel it. One day, when he had awoken, his Asauchi had changed its form, albeit only slightly. At the end of the rough stingray hilt was a small set of Buddhist prayer breads, brown ones that wrapped around his wrist when he wielded the blade. "...ji..." It was faint, but just the sound of his Zanpakuto's spirit was enough to fill him with a sense of warmth and serenity.

After his morning mantra, he adjusted himself and made himself presentable. He pulled his green haori over the traditional uniform of the Shinigami, the Shihakusho, a personal touch that showed his devotion to the Buddhist practice. This haori was adorned with traditional Buddhist prayers etched into it, a reminder of his spiritual beliefs and practices. He would then ruffle through his short, raven black hair to make sure it wouldn't fall into his cloudy, irisless eyes, nor would it cover the horizontal scar across his forehead, a constant reminder for him to be cautious. It was the main cause of his death after all, the woodcutting axe that he used in the middle of a storm had been flung by the wind and embedded itself right into his forehead. 

Once he was ready, he would crack his neck in preparation for the event of the day: Recruitment Day. This was the Graduation of new Shinigami to be, and Benjiro was excited to see who his new peers were, especially since this was the first graduation he was attending as an alumni. Back in his graduation, he didn't pay any attention to any other squad recruiters, focusing his attention solely on Squad 10. Once he found them, he didn't even wait for them to ask him a question, instead just directly asking to join the squad. Soon enough, he was inducted as a member of Squad 10 and his life and duty as a Shinigami truly began. He knew that this day would be a new chapter in their life, and he was eager to see what the future held for the new recruits. He smiled softly as he made his way out of his room, greeting the day with a fresh mind and a gentle spirit. 

Benjiro made his way from the Squad 10 barracks to the Shino Academy for the graduation and recruitment ceremony. The journey was one that he had made countless times before, but today was different. Today, he had a purpose, a mission. He wanted to be one of the recruiters, to ensure that the defense of the Soul Society would continue to reinforce and strengthen itself. Despite not being assigned to this duty, it was something that he personally wanted to do and something he made time for instead of resting or recuperating. However, he could not simply just walk there without doing anything of note to stimulate his mind, body, and spirit. He believed that there was no time to rest on the path to Nirvana, he needed to constantly improve himself even as he traveled. He brought a book of Kido incantations and techniques to learn, his eyes already drawn to the myriad of Bakudo techniques that he had bookmarked as interesting or intriguing. These techniques were dedicated to the restriction and immobilization of enemies as opposed to their destruction, something that he always found more honorable and less destructive, a way to preserve life instead of taking it.

As he walked, the book in one hand and his Zanpakuto in the other, he couldn't help but reflect on the state of the Soul Society. He knew that the balance between the living and the dead was delicate, and it was the duty of the Shinigami to ensure that this balance was maintained. He was determined to do his part, even if it meant sacrificing his own comfort or rest. He knew that the recruitment and graduation ceremony was an important event, and he wanted to be there to help shape the next generation of Shinigami, to ensure that they were strong and just. He took a deep breath and quickened his pace, eager to arrive at the Academy and begin the day's proceedings.

[Nakajima Kimiko]

The nightmares had returned. Somehow, after a countless amount of years spent in peace away from it all, the darkness which had settled inside of each and every one of Kimiko's nights were not so dark anymore. Every night, every time she went to sleep, she would find herself in a place, in memories of times long gone. Sometimes, it was the apartment she once remained within alongside her Human parents, or the arcades she often visited back in Akihabara; at other times, it was the building which once contained a tortured Hollow for the yakuza, or one of her Inner World's regions. Every time she would find herself in such places, her body would be locked in place. She would find herself unable to move, unable to speak, and unable to feel. The immobility would last for hours, and occasionally, words would be spoken to her so that she would be purposefully unable to rest. They told of "her" return, of "her" incoming visit to the Inner World. And then, at what appears to be random moments, her Inner Hollow would appear before her in a flash before disappearing.

It was clear to the Captain that this was a mockery. The Inner Hollow was making fun of her, tormenting her for the hell of it, making sure to leave her on the edge. Yet, as much as she attempted to convince herself that there was nothing to be afraid of just yet and that she could fight this entity, she found herself cringing as she remembered what has been done to her before. She could recall every one of the latest nightmares that preceded the foundation of her dojo. Every one of them. She could remember the violence within them, their wish to harm, to weaken, to subjugate through pain. Back then, the existence of these nightmares bothered her, but there was no way for her to deal with them. She did not know what they were and what was creating them. However, now that she was aware of where they came from, they greatly angered her. She was not going to let that thing ruin her once again, to make her into some pathetic thing controlled by a monster, not after all that she's accomplished!

So, the woman tried her best to find ways for her to deal with this returning nonsense. Since she couldn't do much on her own as a so-called "Vizard", she found herself consulting with her Zanpakuto spirits. Taishokukane suggested that she train more with the abilities of her blades, to further master the art of releasing her true potential so as to better use them against the Inner Hollow. While she agreed with him in that regard, she was still reticent in using her Bankai due to its destructive nature, and the further time went on, the more he made his own hatred for it apparent. Meanwhile, Shizukakane suggested that she keep doing what made her happy so as to maintain a stable mind away from all darkness. In other words, he wanted her to continue focusing on her students within both Nijūkan and the Eleventh Division, and to avoid confronting opponents that were potentially too powerful for her own good, such as Camila. Although the idea of avoiding opponents bothered Kimiko, she did agree with him in regards to maintaining of her work as a teacher, and so she has been following his advice ever since.

Due to its rising reputation within the Soul Society and even small parts of Seireitei, Nijūkan always compelled Kimiko to give it her attention. Every day, she would go to the dojo and make sure to train her students there with as much attention as she possibly could. The work was hard, especially given that it was located in the 40th district, and it was also quite important due to the fact that it was now mainly used as a sort of recruitment hub for the Gotei 13. However, she did not mind it in the slightest. In her eyes, the betterment of her students were for the best, no matter the time or the context. With that said, activities were at times conducted outside of the famous martial arts school which somewhat interested Kimiko due to their contents. One of these activities was the Recruitment Day, an event solely dedicated to the presentation of the squads before the students of the most prestigious Shin'ō Academy.

A time ago, she and one of her comrades had gone to an event which was similar in nature to this newly-advertised activity. The event in question was a conference within which each squad had to present themselves to the students of the Academy in order to present their tasks, their goals, and why people should join them. Back then, it was something that Kimiko wasn't sure she really enjoyed. For one, she did not really want to go to the event, seeing as it was her comrade's idea to go there and not hers, and for two, she did not consider herself to be... well, suited enough for the task of presenting anything to anyone. There were a lot of changes done to her life since then, many of which had been quite drastic, if her past self was anything to go by, but those changes were for the better. In fact, it was these exact changes that made her what she is now, and it was the ones that were currently pushing her forward towards the Academy alongside a number of her subordinates alongside her wish to settle down the inner turmoil brewing within her.

The trek from the barracks of the Eleventh towards the courtyard's Academy was short, perhaps a minute or so at best. It was composed of various Shunpo jumps across Seireitei, the majority of which were conducted atop the buildings of the holy city so as to not disturb the citizens and various Shinigami officers who wandered the many streets below. Once this process would be completed, a few officers of the Eleventh would find themselves in front of the courtyard's main gates, with a number of them carrying boxes. The first, of course, was Kimiko who was wearing her sleeveless haori, while the second was one of her closest subordinates, Binita. The rest were all officers that occupied one of the many seats of the Eleventh Division, all of which were lower than the ones which were taken by the two women. Upon arriving, the redhead would find herself smirking as she saw the gates. "Daaaamn, it's been so long!" She would find herself exclaiming, seemingly quite excited as she turned towards Kimiko. "Do you remember that one time you fucked that guy up around here? He was terrible!"

Upon hearing her friend, the Captain would turn her head towards her before shaking her head with a smile of disbelief. "Honestly, Binita, I can't remember. It's been way too long." 

"Really? I still remember him, though! He kept, like, using that one magic technique all the time!"

"... I... think I remember him now. Was it Roland? Robin? I know it started with Ro."

"It was Ronald! Did you know he's in the Kidō Corps now?"

"Ugh, figures. That's why I forgot about him."

The conversation wasn't particularly interesting, all things considered. It was just simple banter between two girls, nothing more, nothing less. Worse yet, as time went on, it became less a conversation and more so a bashing of poor little Ronald, merely because he was not really a swordsman and more so a wizard. Good thing they were still somewhat far away from any student of the Academy while they were talking, else they would have gotten some stares. However, as seemingly useless as this conversation was at a glance, it allowed Kimiko to be distracted from her worries and to simply not think about whatever awaited her back there in her sleep, in her dreams. It was a well-needed break, and though Binita was entirely unaware of her issues with her Inner Hollow, the Captain was aware that the officer knew that something was wrong, otherwise she wouldn't be constantly talking to her in such a way whenever she became a bit silent.

In any case, while the two of them would continue on to converse in such a way, they and the other officers of the Eleventh would proceed onward into the courtyard where they would find many kiosks with separate stands. Each of these kiosks were attributed to a squad, and they were all easily identifiable with the aid of banners that had been set prior to the beginning of the event. All in all, it was a familiar sight to Kimiko, as it reminded her of the kiosks she occupied back then with Siegfried in the previous recruitment event. "Ours is over there," she pointed towards the stand before she and the others made their way to it. After they reached it, she would turn towards her subordinates and give them a smile. "Alright, let's get everything up and ready, and let's have ourselves a good recruitment day!"

And with that, the officers would go to work in organizing their kiosk. With the energy they shared between one another, it did not take very long. Soon enough, there would be a small training ground set beside the kiosk with various dummies, a ring set beside it, and a table with various chairs people could use to sit on. Kimiko would foresee the fabrication of it all, and once it would be completed, she would then begin to wait for any students who were interested in joining the Eleventh. Hopefully, the past reputation they've held for so long that they have been attempting their best to fix lately will not bite their behinds too hard.

Recruitment Day. Gestalt had been informed he was one of the only individuals that could possibly go. Many others were needed for treating patients or otherwise were training with the 10th given the 4th's abysmal attendance to training. Let alone the seated officers who were up to their heads in paperwork. Gestalt simply sighed to himself as he walked. He admittedly. . . wasn't sure how these functions worked. So, he was going to try his best to understand how it would all work. Likely by going to other squads and getting first-hand experience and asking them questions. This was admittedly, even more important as Gestalt had been pondering over the implications of being assigned to another squad. Effectively being a sort of personal medic to another division.

The reason being, that with the Hell Invasion there had been talk amongst the seated officers that certain members of the 4th should be permanently assigned positions in other divisions to assist in on site healing and help maintain the health of the divisions. Thus hopefully, limiting and possibly minimizing individuals that were brought to their doorstep. Whether through training, fighting, special missions, or simply accidents happening in the day-to-day life. I can't say in good conscience I believe this will work. Both my representing the 4th nor the idea of being a divisional medic. I guess I'll have to pray to God for wisdom and the strength to endure this function and whatever happens next. I have to admit. . . I really wonder if I should have brought more things with me.

Looking over what was carrying he had to admit it was. . . not much at all. He'd been given a stand to place a small banner of the 4th's insignia. He'd been given a stack of papers, recruitment as well as general synopses of the job, and finally a small stack of cards that had important names and ranks. Unironically his name was in fact on the card at the bottom. He sighed. He really hoped he could talk others into this seriously. He didn't want to come back empty handed but he knew it was going to be a tough sell to have people willingly come to the 4th. He tilted his head as he mumbled to himself in thought. "Maybe it won't be so hard? We have been receiving more individuals in the 4th. Perhaps the effects of the invasion have shown why there's a higher need for those who can assist or otherwise mend others with miracles. Or perhaps others are scared of what may lie before them. I can't know for certain. I suppose I'll just have to be honest and tell them what would be expected."

"As far as more combat interested individuals. . . Perhaps I can convince them that this profession can convince them that those in the 4th are still combat capable? Hmm. . . I may need to show off my own zanpakuto. . . I'm certain Zadkiel wouldn't mind. Either way we could certainly use more combat capable individuals. Especially for search and rescue or emergency evacuations." He sighed to himself as he arrived at the Academy. It wasn't going to be easy, but he'd do his best. Especially with learning about the other squads. If he was going to get reassigned to them, he needed to be certain he knew what he could be getting into. He had to wonder if he'd see Celes or Benjiro for this event. As well as who else he may meet. If every squad had a representative, then he'd be given a slew of information to work with. If not, it'd be better than nothing.

It took Gestalt about 20 minutes to navigate his way from the entrance to the resident courtyard the event was taking place. Then another 5 to find his squad's spot. And praise be to God above, someone had set him up with a small table and a few chairs. They even had a sign attached that had the words "Fourth Squad - Medical Division" written in large kanji on it. He made a sign of the cross and gave a quiet thought of praise to God. Then he got to work setting up the rest of the "booth". Putting up the stand with the squad's insignia, placing the papers around and then making sure the cards with important individuals on them were easily able to be grabbed. From there he simply sat down and pulled out his notebook to make sure he hadn't forgotten anything.

Once he was in the clear and hadn't forgotten anything Gestalt took a moment to release his zanpakuto. "Defend the faithful, Zadkiel" His zanpakuto changed immediately from his longsword into a sword handle attached to a weighty amount of thick metal chains wrapped around his arm and a thick heavy mace head at the end. This mace head simply hung off his arm, incredibly light as far as Gestalt was concerned. Once the changed was completed is when he heard his spirits voice "I see you've decided to call upon me Gestalt. As we are not on a battlefield what guidance or power do you desire?" Gestalt chuckled to himself as he felt his reiatsu begin to emanate from him to the surrounding area, from what he could sense he was currently, the only individual doing such, which could be an issue if that wasn't allowed.

I am attempting to gather as many possible shinigami to the 4th as possible. In part due to hopefully catching the attention of the spiritually sensitive but also by attempting to display that we can be more than simple doctors or those on the back lines. I figured a display of God's grace may assist in this endeavor. I hope this is alright or is this perhaps too far? Zadkiel was quiet though the "presence" of them being around was easily felt by Gestalt. After what felt like several minutes Gestalt finally got an answer. "While I understand your intentions Gestalt, I would advise against this. Rather, I would have, but now that you have utilized me it is likely in your best interest to keep me released. However, be careful of who you attract as you may speak the wrong message without meaning so. I pray for your success in this "recruitment day"." Gestalt nodded to no one in particular as the presence left and he was again by himself at his booth. God help him, he really hoped it all went well.

[Rakuo Hirano]

Waking up was always a gruelling task, it always would be. Every single time you do it it's like your brain is starting for the first time, you become conscious of your breathing. In, out, in, out, on a constant loop. You then become aware of the dryness of your mouth looking around you for a drink before settling to swallow your dry spit using whatever it left of it to try and feel normal. You look at the clock and the sun is still yet to rise but you cannot get back to sleep now that you are awake. For Rakuo this was the norm, it was the standard experience, waking in a cold sweat every morning as the bags under his eyes grew and the tiredness he felt continued to get worse, yet there was nothing that he could do because there was noone to blame but himself.

This was the life of the training shinigami, he still wasnt entirely sure how he got wrapped up into this mess but he did know that it was the best shot he had to find that important person to him. He had been going around for what, fourteen years give or take since he found himself in this shithole, he knew he had died since this wasnt the modern city he was familiar with but to think an afterlife was real, it gave him hope obviously but at the same time outside of the tall walls there was so much... filth. People lived in subpar communities and conditions that disappointed him, many didn't remember their lives or how they died and worst of all. Many died again. Rakuo worked in medicine, he knew did atleast but his body didnt agree with it, it was like he had been frozen in time for so long that it forgot things that should have come naturally. Yet he still did what he could to help people, he patched wounds, he looked after the sick and he was always there when someone died...


But that was long ago, donning his robes and placing his glasses back onto his face he would finally get up from the bed, asauchi at his side and a folder he had filled with the research notes he had developed for the condition of both his fellow recruits and those who lived in the 'city' around them. He had already made up his mind as to which "squad" he wanted to join, the fourth division of the gotei 13, a group dedicated to the medical care and healing of any shinigami on the grounds as well as smaller tasks like fixing broken buildings.

So, if he knew what he wanted why was Rakuo still going to the meeting of recruits? To the scouting phase of their training, well it was an easy reason and one that didnt really matter: he was interested on anyone else who would be recruiting or rather he was interested in who he would be needing to heal. To know your patient was to know how you needed to treat them, knowing their behaviours, their anger, their hate. To know if they were rowdy or calm meant that if and when they were dying, Rakuo could comfort them. He entered the hall where others were already arriving before them, standing in the middle of it all and taking it in as he looked at the stalls and scouted his own goal.

And there it was, a more meager display than some of the others in this area but it was enough to assure Rakuo that the 4th squad werent going to be eccentric, that they werent going to be so loud and noisy that the dead could not rest, but with a slightly fancy display of light and an... interesting weapon in their hands, Rakuo would clear his throat looking down on the older man with a smile, that wasnt to say he was young himself but his own greying hadnt taken his head over quite yet. "So, I assume that we still get scalpels, or are chains the new trend in medicine?"

[Shawn Rabuburēdo]

Walking back into his office, Shawn plopped into the chair behind the desk. Spent five hours searching for my siblings in the Rukongai, come back with absolutely nothing to show for it. Rubbing his right arm unconsciously the Vice Captain tiredly picks up one of the many stacks of paper to sort through. Trying to stifle a yawn he notices a paper unlike the others, some kind of recruitment drive being hosted at the Academy.

A shiver went down Shawn’s spine as he recalled the events a few months prior. Going back to that place isn’t exactly on his must do list, but this could be an opportunity to gain some closure. Letting out a sigh he proceeds to stand up and head back out the door. It was a quiet day in Squad 13 today, so walking through the hallway was peaceful. It helps, of course, that his Squad tends to be one of the quieter squads to begin with.

It took some time to reach the spot at the Academy where the recruitment drive was happening. Thankfully it wasn’t supposed to start for a while, so he made it just as the event began. Getting his stand ready was no problem, most people didn’t even notice the thin and pale man that had a Vice Captain badge.

Sitting down behind the stand Shawn casually looked around for any potential recruits. Thanks to his 200 Senses he barely had to move his head much to see almost everyone. Currently the area was flooded with new graduates or soon to be graduates, many different noises and smells made this a bit tedious. That’s about when he noticed someone from Squad 4 emitting spiritual pressure to make his presence known. Too bad it’d be a waste for him to release like that here.

[Ishikawa Seiji]

Days seemed to bleed into one another.

When was the last time he had slept properly since becoming Lieutenant? He couldn't recall. Having no Captain to speak of and few upper seated members since the last invasion meant the brunt of the work fell on his shoulders, including speaking with Central 46 since his promotion. It meant they expected more of him, wanted him to fall ever more in line with whatever their whims were for that particular day. Seiji tolerated it, to a certain degree, though they definitely never got what they wanted down to the exact letter. If anyone wanted such from him these days, they'd have to help with the mountains of work piling up upon him first. He'd already 'looked' across all their personnel files and few had the capacity, drive, nor combat power to serve within the ranks of seated officers and take some of this paperwork off his hands. You'd think being blind would give him a free pass of sorts so that he never had to do such horrid work again, but no, it did not.

Less troublesome was the yearly recruitment day held at Shinō Academy, a place where the higher ups of each Squad typically went in search of new graduate talent or even those due to graduate in the following few years. Of course, he suspected the attendance of others might be greatly reduced given rather recent events, what was a month to a Shinigami after all? He had already sent ahead their fifteenth seat to set things up ahead of time and potentially be there all day if need be, but as the pounding in his head grew worse as hours of trying to read through and finish paperwork, even with an aid perched upon his wrist in order to do so? Well even he knew when to call it quits for the moment, slipping such a device off of his wrist and setting it aside in a locked draw for now, such tasks could be completed later. Soon enough he took to the rest of the Kido Corps compound with light steps, into his only now somewhat new quarters to retrieve his rather vocal Zanpakuto Spirit sheathed upon his right hip as well as his badge, before heading out towards the meeting point.

Luckily the grounds of the academy sustained very little damage in comparison to how Rukongai had suffered, and finding it even without vision wasn't difficult, the paths back oh so familiar to him. Days sneaking out and back in before he had joined the ranks, it all seemed like so long ago now. Securing the badge onto his right sleeve just as he left the barracks, worn purely for formality sake really as someone might throw a fit otherwise, eventually quiet steps transitioned into a few Shunpo across the rooftops and through the various alleyways spread about the Seiretei. Of course the fact that he could appear close to the young girl he'd sent ahead and tap her shoulder without her noticing his reiatsu spoke to her inexperience, but that was fine. Poor thing was trying after all. Lately that was about the best he could hope for until everyone had the time to recover and adjust to what and who they'd lost.

"Eek! Ah, I'm sorry Ishikawa-fukutaichō, I didn't realize it was you."

The girl was all but mortified, oh the lost little lamb, not that she seemed to be slacking though, he hadn't heard anything untoward as he'd approached. Given she'd been here for hours already, he couldn't really deny the girl a break, even if he was tempted just to see what she did. For today, he was too tired to play such pranks. "Don'cha worry 'bout it, yer still learnin'. Go take a break an' go back after ya hear? I'll stay here fer a lil' while." It was a brief wave of one hand, like spider silk floating in the air as he waved her aware with a careless gesture. By her rapid attempt at a hasty bow and Shunpo that followed, she clearly did not need to be told twice. Well wasn't that something? Now left by himself, rather then wander the walkways above and observe all the students clustered together, he keeps to the ground. Only half waiting near what their newest seated member had set up, really he drifts around a bit, wandering quietly and listening. Few paid him mind and that was fine, in fact it made it easier to spot those who might be a better fit.

Gestalt had found himself musing a bit over what his day had planned. He wasn't actually certain how long he was supposed to be present at this function. But likely he'd be here for a few hours if nothing else. At some point during his time here, he'd go around and learn about the other squads, beyond what little he knew from their injured shinigami. Then perhaps after his time here, he'd go back to the barracks and train before otherwise getting himself ready for the evening. He wasn't on shift at the hospital or the barracks until tomorrow at the earliest. These thoughts though were distracted by someone who had spoken to him. He glanced up and admittedly held a surprised look on his face. Someone decided to walk over of their own accord? So soon? I. . . If this isn't God sending help the 4th's way, then I don't know what is.

He cleared this throat and stood up from his chair, recovering from his shock and smiling brightly toward Rakuo. "That would be the case, unless your zanpakuto can produce chains that can cut cleanly. But something tells me those we treat wouldn't be fond of the chains regardless." Gestalt chuckled before extending his right hand out. "I'm Father Gestalt, currently an unseated member of the 4th. Sorry, just Gestalt, I keep forgetting I'm not part of the church anymore. Regardless, don't let that stop you from asking anything that comes to mind. I've been present for recent events and have been working the squad long enough to answer most of anything you may be wondering."

"That said who are you? And is it safe to assume, helping others with medicine isn't new to you?" Whether his handshake or not was accepted it wouldn't matter too much to Gestalt. He was just glad to have someone sent his way whether by God or their own choice. He'd remain standing while speaking with Rakuo intent on giving him his entire attention, all things considered. His body language remaining relaxed if not a bit tired, likely a telling sign that he'd just come from the hospital assuming the other was experienced in medical work. Gestalt figured he was given his opening comment. A thought started to grow in Gestalts head as he listened to Rakuo speak. If this is the beginning of a trend towards the 4th. . . I may never get to speak to other squads. I. . . don't know what I'd prefer all things considered.

[Mamenoka, Utsukushī]

Once Utsukushī had finally taken in the sights, albeit at a glance, he found himself surprised at what little activity there was. Yes, there were plenty of new graduates present, but the same couldn’t be said of squad recruiters. He noted that there were less than half of them even represented here. As he walked the courtyard grounds he wore his expectation like an overcoat, disappointed only in the fact that he found himself disappointed. He felt a fool for expecting more engagement from squad representatives, given just half a century ago they couldn’t even save the only woman he ever loved. Nothing would change in so short a time; not here in Soul Society where time moves at a snail's pace.

Perhaps his surprise came from the fact that this was so soon after a large-scale demon invasion? One would think after so many of their ranks died, they would be pressed to refill their numbers.

To his knowledge, he’d never met a demon, much less seen one on the attack. He could only imagine the terror they cause with their presence alone. Whether that presence was a bloodcurdling as the hollow threat was something he would much rather learn later. Much later. For now, his attention was focused on a single goal. Vengeance.

How could one achieve such a thing given his current lowly position? He could seek to climb the ranks of the Thirteen Court Squads. There there was at least one squad that was charged with policing them in some way. And if that were the case, surely the police the twelfth squad as well. Of course, he couldn’t be sure. As he understood it, the functions of each squad changed like the weather. Maybe that squad’s purpose still remained the same? Squad 7 was it? Upon finding their booth, Utsukushī once more found himself disappointed to be disappointed. Of course, they weren’t here. Scouting out talent and increasing their numbers would be the responsible thing to do, and if he knew one thing about Thirteen Court Squads, it was that they are most definitely not responsible.

His rage began to build. Hitting an obstacle like this so close to the beginning of his journey was undoubtedly a sign of the difficulties ahead. His blood felt like fire, that was until he caught another recruiter’s table in the corner of his eye.

Kidōshū! Of course! If memory served, the Kidō Corp group was one which presided over an aspect of spiritual law not governed by the Thirteen Court Squads, or at least, not in the same way with the same limitations. They don’t answer to the Captain Commander. Instead, they answer, directly to the Central 46. The captain of this particular division actually showed up!

Would such a perfect opportunity ever be made available to him again? A captain who, for now at least, represented what a responsible individual with power should carry themselves. Actually, was this even a captain at all? He looked quite young, tall, but young. At least, younger than Utsukushī imagined a captain could be. Maybe this young man was a prodigy, a genius in his craft, the craft of Demon Arts?

Utsukushī approached the lime-haired representative confidently, pausing in his steps at one point pondering whether he should instead look more docile. “Hell no, the goal is to enter into a league of professionals!” He said to himself as he pushed through his doubts and continued his approach.

“Good afternoon Sir!” He said, upong reaching the man and learning that he was in fact the Lieutenant of this division. He politely bowed in typical show of respect. His curly violet hair flashed subtly after catching sunlight at just the right angle. “My name is Manenoka(sirname), Utsukushī(first). I’m hoping to learn more about Kidōshū?”

[Benjiro Hiroto]

As Benjiro ran across the wide streets of the Seireitei, his thoughts were consumed by the study of Bakudo techniques. He was reading from the little notebook that he had inscribed with certain techniques and incantations that had appealed to him, and those that he seemed ready for. In all honesty, Benjiro was focused on developing a strong foundation for his abilities, especially since he refused to learn the other foundational and aggressive skills that came with being a Shinigami, such as Zanjutsu and Hakudo. As such, despite the more advanced Bakudo techniques having more application, he had to learn the more simplistic and developmental techniques to increase his overall capabilities. After all, he had always been drawn to non-combative methods of offense and defense, and Bakudo fit the bill, allowing him to develop more holistically. For today, one Bakudo in particular caught his attention: Bakudo number 30, Shitotsu Tansen. This Bakudo created three pillars of reiatsu and light that pinned the target to a wall or surface, making it a perfect fit for someone like Benjiro, who sought to protect the Soul Society without causing harm.

Yet, before he could truly go over the incantation methods and the inner flow of reiatsu to accomplish such a technique, he had arrived at the Shino Academy, his eyes darting around to see the various Squad kiosks that had already been set up. The first of which was Squad 4, dedicated to the Medical Corps of the Gotei 13. Funnily enough, the man demonstrating and recruiting for the squad was someone he had met not too long ago, accompanied by his Shikai Zadkiel. A part of him thought about approaching Father Gestalt, to catch up and mingle a little, but that was not his duty for the day. Especially not now, when a new graduate had approached the 4th to talk with him. Benjiro just gave his iconic and comical bow in the direction of the 4th squad, hoping that Gestalt would notice considering Benji's towering height of 7'3.

With that, his eyes darted to the next kiosk, which was the 11th squad, the attack force of the Gotei 13. Benjiro noticed the relatively simple stand for the 11th, but their true demonstration was within the small makeshift training ground with practice dummies all around. He also noticed a large number of chairs that were supposed to be used by spectators. He smiled, wondering if this had something to do with the members of the attack force and if they were to have a practical demonstration of their ability. That, or they were going to pull the recruits in and test them on the spot. Either way, it was undoubtedly going to be a spectacle in and of itself. 

Turning his head, he'd notice another simple looking stand for the 13th squad, with what looked to be a powerful Shinigami manning the stand. Without much for display or for demonstration, it appeared as if the 13th squad believed their repute and necessity to be enough as opposed to actively trying to persuade new recruits into joining them. Was it arrogance or was it confidence? Perhaps it was simply the trust that those that were meant to join the 13th already would have. Only time would tell, Benjiro thought.

Then his eyes landed on the kiosk for the Kido Corps, a separate Shinigami force that worked directly for the Central 46 as opposed to the Gotei 13. It was another simple stand with a meek looking girl manning the kiosk in its entirety, though she quickly walked away. Unfortunate, he would have liked to talk with her, instead the only person around was another unassuming man who wandered around the kiosk. Curious. Benjiro thought about approaching him, but decided against it for now, knowing that he had to attend to his own squad first and foremost. There didn't seem to be much else, unfortunately. In all honesty, if not for the 10th, the Kido Corps was the most interesting squad that Benjiro would have applied for. While he was not the most skilled at the use of a majority of Kido, he had hoped that his Bakudo skill and dedication would have made him useful. Perhaps in another life, he would have been a Bakudo master. Of course, he had no time to consider that possibility, as he finally turned towards his own squad's kiosk, and what a kiosk it was.

Beaming with pride, Benjiro ran over to his fellow squadmates. At the Squad 10 kiosk, Benjiro was greeted by two Seated Officers of the squad, Seijuro and Aya. Seijuro was a disciplined man with a stern gaze, but he was fiercely protective of the squad. "Greetings, young Benjiro. Have you come to assist in the stands?" He asked with a deep tone, matching his personality greatly. Aya, on the other hand, was a very enthusiastic and friendly woman, counter to her shy appearance. "Well duh! Big Benji here's gonna help us lift all the tables and chairs at the end of the day, aint'cha?" Benjiro just smiled. "If I can be of assistance, then of course! Do we have any new squadmates though?" Benjiro asked, and the two more experienced Shinigami just shook their heads. "Not yet, Benjiro." "Not until we show off our skills, right Seijuro?" The two Shinigami laughed as Benjiro joined in, turning to really take in the kiosk they had decorated. The kiosk itself was a simple structure, constructed from sturdy wood and adorned with the emblem of Squad 10, a shining metal plate with the number "10" etched in kanji into it. Despite its simplicity, the kiosk radiated an air of confidence and strength, much like the two officers standing before it.



Seijuro was the 13th Seated Officer, and his impressive stature commanded attention. He was a tall, though not as tall as Benjiro was, broad-shouldered man with a stern countenance, and his eyes held a fierce determination. He was a much older gentleman who focused on Zanjutsu and the use of his Zanpakuto to fight, and he took on a bit of a mentor role within the squad. He always tried to teach the newer members and guide their progress up until they develop a Shikai of their own. Aya, on the other hand, was the 15th Seated Officer, and her demeanor was far more reserved. She was a lithe, graceful woman with a gentle smile, but her movements were precise and calculated. Her personality betrayed this though, with her bubbly and enthusiastic nature causing her to seem like a little sister, regardless of the actual age difference. Some of the other squad members said that Aya was actually older than Seijuro was, but anyone who got caught saying that got a Hado blasted in their direction. She was the Kido expert of the two, after all. 


Together, Seijuro and Aya stood up in front of the kiosk and demonstrated their prowess as defenders the Soul Society, showing off their skills with a series of intricate movements and powerful techniques. Seijuro's Zanpakuto glimmered in the light as he swung it in wide arcs, the glaive-like release radiating in power and condensing reiatsu around the blade, each strike becoming more precise than the last. With each wide swing, the blade of the glaive darkened until it was obsidian black, and without a moment of hesitation, Seijuro lunged towards Aya. Thankfully, Aya's techniques were no less impressive, her quick movements and deft manipulation of reiatsu making her a formidable opponent in her own right. She rushed forward, the reiatsu hardening into armor around her left arm as she yelled out an incantation. "Winds rage and tempests blow, but rock stands and castles know that true strength is in solid defense. Bakudo number 68, Ganoretto!" In an instant, Seijuro's glaive clashed with the reiatsu gauntlet, the force of their clash pushing Benjiro backwards into the seat of the kiosk.


The two Seated Officers worked together seamlessly, smiling all throughout as if this was the norm for their training and they trusted each other to the point that they had no doubts in their mind about their safety, their combined strength a testament to the prowess of Squad 10. As Benjiro watched, he couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and inspiration. He was here to recruit new Shinigami, but seeing the skill and dedication of Seijuro and Aya made him all the more determined to learn and develop his own prowess first and foremost. He hoped he could count himself among the ranks of the 10th's best Seated Officers one day, but for now, he sat and watched with delight. He wasn't the only one, as a handful of new graduates began to form a small crowd around the demonstration.

[Ishikawa Seiji]

"Not having fun there Seiji? I'd say it serves you right for not focusing on your sensory capabilities, always ignoring your own skills."

The slightly hissing and frankly frustrated sounding voice of his own Zanpakuto reached him, causing his almost pacing within the familiar yet not Academy grounds to pause. Just for a moment or two. Sure, she might have a point, but he would not admit that to her. Perhaps calling his Zanpakuto at times a complete bitch towards him was accurate sure, but he wondered just what exactly that said about him, self contained emotion that spilled out through her? Most likely. Thin fingers pressed all the more closely around the hilt of the blade at his side, deadly if released but he hadn't come here to knock most of these students unconscious, as fun as that might be. It wasn't quite the spectacle he was after, more so when he could not see the result of such a choice.

"Kinda been a bit busy if ya hadn't noticed Kaze."

"Mm, you have, for your own purposes again? If you want the power to fight back, perhaps you should ask rather then struggle."

That at least, led the newest Lieutenant to scoff even as he resumed his almost-but not quite aimless wandering near the stall that had already been set up, ask what on earth was she was on about? Kaze had rarely been so accommodating, then again that was before she'd seen him realize the other form that lurked within his mind, an inner hollow that neither of them could even hope to deal with at this moment. Perhaps events in these past few months had changed her outlook somewhat, changed them both in ways he hadn't expected, given what had happened to him he supposed he should expect it. They were one and the same at the end of the day, even if they differed on opinion about many things. At the end of it all? She was a part of him, an undeniable section of his soul that granted him the chance at sight even when his world had become pitch black, that was a fact he could not ignore.

Even as he hears things slowly begin to get busier as more and more arrive, the sounds of voices and even feeling the slight surges of reiatsu here and there. Seated officers showing off their own releases? Whatever the intention as to why eluded him, it wasn't a damn popularity contest after all. Should it not be the graduates trying to impress those already in power to accept them? Or at least, that was how he remembered things from when he had been about to graduate. A request made and a demonstration of his skill in order to prove himself enough to be selected. Hell a few from his own classes had failed and had to return to the academy for a while longer, if no Squad wished to have you, well that was a problem. Though perhaps with the invasion and sheer amount of dead created, at the moment the Gotei 13 could not afford to be nearly as picky as they once were, of course that did not apply to the Kido Corps. Not to the same degree anyway.

It was near the end of such a thought, as his focus returned to the world around him, to listening to it and subtly shifting as he walked in order to avoid whacking head first into someone. That rapid footsteps approached, not uncommon, but the voice that came with it was unfamiliar and given they were calling him 'sir' not one from the Kido Corps with some kind of update. A student perhaps? Most likely. The edges of his mouth drawn upwards, a thin smile, a fixed expression as he listened. Off-putting for some, how would this one fare he wondered. "Well if ya have questions, ask away, ain' no use me blabbin' 'bout stuff ya already know ne?" Tone casual, relaxed, a flicker of amusement even. He knew students were given an overview of each division and their duties, and that even included a very brief summary of the Kido Corps. so there was no need to parrot what he was sure instructors had already taught many times over. No, if there were questions to be had, the Lieutenant was all but certain they'd be a bit more specific or pointless.

He'd just have to hope for the former.

[Mamenoka, Utsukushī]

How blunt could a shinigami be? As the lieutenant spoke, Utsukushī couldn’t help but feel a sense of relief. The man’s response completely cut through all formality, all politeness, and got straight to the point. Unbecoming of a lieutenant? Or just what Utsukushī needed to navigate the political atmosphere of Soul Society’s military forces? Bluntness and honesty are two different things however, and it was honesty, and trustworthiness, that the new Shinō Academy graduate needed. Could this lime-haired guy prove himself to be both?

Utsukushī fought his urge to swallow and held a stoic face, as neutral as he could at the moment. Currently, he thought himself even bolder than he originally imagined himself to be. Once the thought of testing a lieutenant took root, he fought to dislodge it.

“Don’t do that Utsukushī.” A deep masculine voice declared. Its owner placed a cinnamon colored hand on his shoulder. The obsidian released form of Itsumademo Kingu spun around his ring finger. “Not if it keeps you from moving forward on your path.” He continued. And then, he vanished just as quickly as he’d appeared.

“My question isn’t necessarily one that students are tested on.” Utsukushī said in response to the Kidō Corps lieutenant. “What would you say to a graduate that would pick one of the Thirteen Court Guard squads over your own division? What would you tell a graduate to get them to join you in Kīdoshū?” He asked confidently. He had no choice but to feel this way after receiving encouragement from Forever King. The domineering spirit of that half of his zanpakuto never failed to have that effect on the him.

[Rakuo Hirano]

Zanpakuto was a word that Rakuo didn't understand despite the fact that people threw it about like it was all they knew, Zanpakuto spirit this, zanpakuto ability that. The very idea that your soul was manifested in nothing more than a blade astounded him, but what made him more worried than astonished was that EVERYONE had one, or atleast everyone with a soul, and why was it worrying? Because he couldn't imagine what it would be like to meet with your very own soul, to meet the thing that represents all that you are... There was a moment of silence as he watched the priests mace, listening to them talk about it, they were friendly but Rakuo still wasn't entirely sold on the soul society, the very idea of life after him was an insult to the work he put into trying to save people, yet it gave him hope at the same time that he could find that thing that was oh so precious to him. But he had been looking for a long time, it was why he even considered joining up in the first place, to rise up, to get stronger, to get power and to find her.

The greyed man made a couple of jokes, mainly about the profession itself as well as the chains his weapon held, and holding out a hand Rakuo would meet the shake with a smile "Dr Hirano, But to skip formalities my name is Rakuo, and you would be correct I was in the field, although I guess researcher would fit best, most of my time was spent in books rather than getting practical experience..." A light chuckle to carry off the self deprecation as he would adjust his glasses once more, making sure to read anything that was laid out before he would clear his throat, it was a bit like a job interview at this point, what he said and did could matter alot for whether he could actually join the field once more. "I guess it would be best for me to ask about how things work here in... well I'm still not sure if this is heaven or something else, but I know people still bleed so, is surgery still the norm? what exactly is it like performing on.. the dead?" 

For someone who always skittered around life and was focused on death, knowing that there was something beyond it made him almost... Fearful, he had already died, he knew that he had died in pain yet didnt know what exactly it was, there was no aching voice inside that spoke to him like others in the training school had said, there was nothing bar the emptiness he felt, the type of emptiness that clawed away at him, but he knew that he had to keep that gentle smile and figure it out, because if he didn't then people would not be getting the best care that they could, and well, medical malpractice or negligence wasn't going to be on his resume any time soon.

Gestalt looked over the man and had to wonder what his story was. The way the man held himself and spoke showed that he was educated. Far more than Gestalt had been, prior to joining the Soul Society. They were also far calmer than some of the other "younger" individuals he'd met. Though in some regard, young was really more of an appearance prospect than it was an actual representation of one's genuine age. Given there were individuals who were hundreds of years old, and their appearance looked over 30 at the latest. Gestalt, looking more into his 40's and beyond was something of an odd ball all things considered. Even he was still "young" by Soul Society's standards. Which meant that Rakuo had to be to be even younger than him. And yet age looked like it had played some on his appearance.

Regardless he'd listen to Rakuo while he spoke and nod a bit. Keeping in mind that the other was a legitimate doctor. Well, legitimate in the way that they knew more than the average student and likely even more so than most seated officers. Once the other was done Gestalt would think for a minute. He had to consider the others question given there were a few things that he likely had a different perspective on. One that may not be truly all that applicable to the concerns he had. Still, it was best not to beat around the bush. Magic, or in Gestalts mind "Miracles" happened frequently in Squad 4. And they made medicine of old from his time look like the learned individuals of his time knew nothing. Which. . . maybe they didn't all things considered.

When he spoke his body language stiffened somewhat. He wasn't tense per say but he was serious in what he was going to say, and his body language reflected that. "So let me be honest. My background was first and foremost a warrior before I came to Soul Society. I was also a part of the crusades lead by the Church. So, you can imagine how little of medicine I know as I was a warrior first rather than a bedside healer or assistant.
