{Perma-Release}Description: This type is similar to the Soul Specialist in that the individual focuses most of their power into their Release. Unlike the Soul Specialists, though, this manifestation of power represents itself in a permanent Release. This direct focus on their Release makes it difficult to learn and master many techniques. In exchange, their spiritual weapon tends to be more potent than others of its level.
Advantage: Advantage for All Ranks: The individual possessing this Type is always in their first stage of Release or simply pays no Reiatsu to enter their first stage of Release. This means that they can start a battle already in their first stage, or simply enter it whenever they want. This comes with all the normal advantages of being Released. First stage also refers to only the Primary Fullbring.
Rank 1: 50% increase to Spiritual Pressure (100 would be 150).
Rank 2: Double Spiritual Pressure (100 would be 200). The Class of all Releases is increased by 1 up to a maximum of Class 1.
Rank 3: 150% boost to Spiritual Pressure (100 would be 250). The Class of all Releases is increased by 2 up to a maximum of Class 1.
Rank 4: Triple Spiritual Pressure (100 would be 300). The Class of all Releases is increased by 3 up to a maximum of Class 1.
Disadvantage: This Type must spend 50% extra TTP to learn any extra techniques outside of their Release. This Type is limited on what techniques it can actually learn. For Shinigami, all Kidō techniques that are Class 2 or higher are unable to be learned. Fullbringers of this Type can learn Willpower, but cannot learn the “Gate” portion of it. For both, a character is limited to a maximum of ten non-Release techniques. This applies to ALL non-Release techniques except for the racial step technique that does not take a slot. Concealing Reiatsu is impossible for those who possess this Type due to their innate inability to contain the massive amount of Reiatsu they expel. Shinigami Permanent Releases are limited to four techniques split between Shikai and Bankai rather than the normal six. Those who have this Type are typically unable to control their Reiatsu very well.
Race Restrictions: Available to only Shinigami and Fullbringers. Only five Perma-Release Types can exist at a single time.
Initial Weapons: One Starting Weapon (i.e. one Zanpakutō, one Doll, etc.)

-Basic Information-
Name: Oboro Ume (Keiko Shihouin)
Age of Death: Born in Soul Society
Real Age/Age of Appearance: 220/22
Birthday (Month/Day): 1/19
Blood Type: B
RP Sample (Optional): [Insert Here]
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-Appearance-
Height/Weight: 5'1" / 111lbs.
Physical Description:
Ume is short and skinny. She has extremely long purple hair that hangs off her in a mess of tussles and kinks and bangs that threaten to cover her eyes. Aside from her purple hair, she also has the dark skin and golden eyes that most in the Shihoin clan are known for. She has bags under her golden eyes and droopy eyelids that come from a lack of sleep. She wears glasses on her nose: always the most fashionable frames Ryo can buy! Over her shihakushou is a lab coat with big pockets for lots of devices and tools. Ume's almost always seen with an energy drink or two in her hands. She has rosy cheeks and is usually seen to be a bit hunched over. Her clothes are usually a bit wrinkled from not changing them very often.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-Personality-
Dislikes:
- Sleeping! - If you're sleeping, you're not accomplishing anything! What a waste!
- People all up in her business. - It's nunya, you know? Don't worry about it. Don't pay attention!
- Having her time wasted - If it's not sleep, it's other people. What? Go away. I'm busy.
- Children - Disgusting little half formed poop machines. Come back when you can speak a real language!
- Food - Obviously Ume has to eat, and she has taste buds, but the idea of cooking and making a big deal out of it just seems like such a waste of time. If she had it her way, she'd turn every meal into some kind of digestible nutrient paste that was flavored the way she wanted it to be.
- Ceremonies and Traditions - Outdated relics and time wasters at best. Hinderance to progress most of the time.
- Talking about her Family. She doesn't look like ANYONE. Shut up.
Likes:
- Glasses - Whether they are necessary or not is irrelevant. Glasses are known to make one appear more intelligent to others. Just because you're looking smarter doesn't mean you have to look any less fashionable either! Ume will never pass up a chance to try on a designer pair of glasses! Especially if they can be loaded with tech!
- Energy Drinks! - Must. Never. Sleep.
- Other People's Business! - What's even better than a good show? Someone else's real life! Juicy gossip? Tedious paperwork? Sleeping?! Yes. Yes. Yes. Ume wants to know!
- Tech - The newer, the better! Bleeding Edge, baby! Even better if she can shove it somewhere on her!
- The Human World - As a curious shinigami, especially one born in the Soul Society, she loves the human world. Especially all the gadgets and gizmos!
- Experiments - Let's see how the world works! Did someone say Trial and Error? Yes, please!
Flaws:
- Ume is the very definition of aloof. She's not really interested in empathizing with people. They are either useful to her or a waste of her time.
- Organized Chaos. Ume is unkempt and disheveled. She looks like she just tosses things here and there, but she knows what, why and how things are and does not like it when things are messed with. In spite of this, she is also OCD, so she might just clean up for you one day and mess up your room the next.
- Ume is smarter than you. She can prove it mathematically. She accepts the hierarchy only in so much that it is the structure with which she has to work in. She certainly doesn't want Soul Society or other Worlds collapsing and structure is important. Until it isn't.
- Ume's short. Please help her reach the top button on the drink machine!
Habits:
- Ume Rarely, if ever sleeps. So, she is constantly yawning or clicking her mouth. On rare occasions (especially if she has to sit through something she considers boring), she will even fall asleep while someone is talking to her.
- She almost always has an energy drink or coffee she is drinking. She also, almost always has a little drool in the corner of her mouth.
- Her glasses, as stylish as they may be, often slide down her nose. She is constantly pushing them up.
Fears:
- Ume does NOT want to get gobbled up by a hollow. Arrancar are interesting. Hollows? No thank you!
- Ume doesn't want to die. She's not just afraid of being eaten by a Hollow. Ume doesn't want to keep going through the cycle of life, death and rebirth. She would much rather keep this nice, cute shinigami body forever.
- Ume is afraid of not being smart enough to solve a problem. Having someone else's stupidity rub off on her... terrifying!
Goals:
- Ume wants to modernize Soul Society as much as possible. She wants the tech to be as cool as it is in the Human World!
- Immortality. Someway, somehow.
- Ume wants to accumulate as much knowledge as possible.
- Though she would never admit it, Ume wants to prove to her family that she is worthy of the name. She just isn't going to do it THEIR way.
Alignment: Lawful Neutral
Overall Personality:
Ume is a curious person. She likes to know everything about everything. She also doesn't like people. This kind of conflict of personality can be seen immediately. The unkempt hair, the glasses, the labcoat over her shihakushou. She gives off a very, "I want to study you from a distance" vibe. She fits in quite well with the Juunibantai, even fresh out of the academy. Ume is not particularly polite, nor is she particularly rude. generally speaking, she sees everyone else as a tool to further her own goals.
Inspite of her upbringing, she usually treats people like the tools she believes them to be. Although Ume lacks empathy for the plight of others, she does understand it. She has her own issues and does have feelings that can be hurt, but disassociation and aloofness is her way of dealing with those things. She doesn't want people to get close to her because then they might start asking questions and she is the one who asks the questions. Despite that she looks like a Shihoin, she's taken up a different name for a reason and doesn't want people to pry for both her sake and her family's sake.
In spite of her aloofness, Ume's goal is to make the lives of herself and those around her more comfortable, or, at least more interesting. She likes to tinker with things and often times might upgrade a piece of equipment just to be able to mess around. If there's a Soul Phone on the fritz, or a chance to introduce Living World Tech, Ume will take it. In this respect she does help out her fellow shinigami, even if it's technically helping herself out just as much. Despite having an aversion to interactions with other people, she likes being around them and can often be found outside of Squad 12, trying to squirrel her way into other squad's barracks to mess around with their stuff! (She already knows all the cool squad 12 stuff)
If Ume were part of the world of the living, she would be considered a NEET or Otaku. She's very fond of spending time away from people. Her levels of cleanliness vary, depending on how absorbed with work she is and how much others are willing to tolerate said levels of uncleanliness. Another reason she likes spending time on earth is that others can't see her, so they can't tell her to go to bed or take a shower. Though, Ume is considering enrolling in one of the Human World schools, just as a test. To see if she could even do it. The good part of Ume being a stinky otaku is she always has an energy drink or two on hand and she's always willing to share! Plus, she's turned the chore of eating into sucking down a bag of fatty tuna sushi paste! Now with a hint of wasabi and soy! Also, in spite of her own personality quirks, she is often willing to help others in any field for the sake of experimentation, efficiency and the scientific way!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-Powers-
Fighting Style: With more brain than brawn at her disposal, Ume is much more tactically minded. Although she's not normally made for one-on-one combat, whether she is fighting a single foe or many, Ume likes to assess the situation first, seeing what advantages she has and trying to figure out her opponent's weaknesses before delivering the finishing blow. Ume's ability to see in both multiple places as well as through different kinds of vision allows her to triangulate attacks, both her own and other's, much better than most.
Since her zanpakutou has no cutting power of its own, and her swordsmanship is lacking even if it were sealed, Ume's style is more defensive in nature. Her sword play is built around dodging and parrying and using Kidou and other techniques to supplement her offense. She's agile, and nimble, but not very strong, so she can be overwhelmed by someone who is just stronger or faster than her, even if she knows what is coming and where from. She tries to make sure she is never in that kind of position, though, if she can help it.
Ume is at her best when part of reconnaissance work or as part of a team. Her unique abilities also allow her to better fight off a small number of weaker foes rather than one much stronger foe. She's the sort of fighter who "lowers a ceiling" in a fight. Someone who, if they are around, puts a timer on a fight, especially if her opponents are distracted. As someone who doesn't particularly like engaging in combat, as well as someone who is very curious about things, diplomacy, bribery, extortion, or anything else that doesn't involve direct combat are always preferable to clashing swords. She would much rather study someone than kill them.
Except Hollows. She wants nothing to do with them. If she doesn't think she can kill them on sight, then she will flee. Especially the ones with big nasty teeth and claws. Arrancar are a different story as they seem far more approachable and affable to their less evolved counterparts. Everyone else, she is definitely willing to engage with in discourse instead of battle.
When Ume is fighting, (or, really, any time) she is rarely looking someone in the eye. Because her shikai is specifically designed to look in multiple places at the same time, even during battle, Ume's eyes seem to be darting around as if they were looking at twenty different things at once. Some people might consider this rude, others might think she is vulnerable, but she is not. While not done on purpose, it can catch people off guard and get people to underestimate Ume.
Zanpakuto Spirit Appearance(Optional):
It is hard to tell if Nijume is a mummy, an amputee, or some kind of cyborg alien thing, the victim of terrible experiments. She is bandaged from ankle to choulder, with her arms bound behind her back. Her skin is green and her hair is dark green. She wears a tiara like device on her head that keeps one of her eyes open. She sits in a little hover chair that lets her float to wherever she needs to be. Despite her rather odd appearance, Nijume is extremely friendly and is always willing to help anyone who comes into her inner world. (Which is almost exclusively Ume)
Inner World
Ume's innerworld is a series of alleys that never seem to open up into a main street. There's camera's everywhere, but also there are seedy storefronts with which someone can duck into to escape the camera's Inside are a cluttered shop, reminiscent of a parts department. There, monitors feill the front of the rooms and at the desk sits Nijuume, in a little floating chair, ready to assist in any way she can. Despite her odd appearance, Nijuume is friendly, but she always has her eye on whoever enters. Finding the necessary parts is also very challenging, though, so, good luck!
Zanpakuto Appearances:
Ume's zanpakutou is a permanent release. It takes the form of a large glass jar of opaque sloshing liquid that hangs around the side of Ume by a cord like a jug. It has a wooden top with a Japanese style sword handle sticking out from it. The handle is wrapped in black and where the tsuba guard is, there is metal circle that fits into the jar's wooden cap, creating a fully sealed jug. When the handle is "unsheathed," Ume holds in her hands, a straight iron bar, that is surrounded on all sides by damp eyeballs.
These eyeballs look around independent of each other and occasionally blink, despite having no eyelids seemingly attached to them. When Nijuume is unsheathed, the eyes are coated in a viscous liquid from the jar. When Nijuume is sealed, occasionally a floating eyeball can be seen peering out from inside the the glass jar when it bumps against the surface as it sloshes around when Ume moves.
Zanpakuto Release Names(Include both Shikai and Bankai names, and call out phrases):
二十目 - Nijuume - 20 Eyes (Permanent Release) まばたきしないで - Mabataki Shinaide - Don't Blink!
Bankai - 心の眼 - Kokoronome - The Mind's Eye
Overall Ability:
Nijume's overall ability is sight. It can cover a wide distance by seeing lots of different places at once, or it can hyperfocus to see things that wouldn't normally be visible. This powered sight helps her collect valuable information in and out of battle and can be directed onto an opponent to distract, disorient or damage her opponent.
Shikai Overall Ability:
Nijuume's primary ability is to see through the eyes that it creates. While she is holding onto the handle of Nijuume, Ume can see through any one or all of the eyes at the same time. She is also able to use the eyes to mark places, essentially allowing her to see through wherever she leaves her mark. Any eyeball Ume touches, or is attached to the iron bar of her zanpakutou, she can see through. Nijuume's abilities also make it difficult to surprise or distract her as well, as she almost always has 360 degree vision and has the ability to focus on multiple things at the same time while holding onto the handle of her zanpakutou.
Alternatively, Ume can crush or "pop" an eyeball and use the "juices" to leave a reiatsu mark that stays until the zanpakutou is sealed or erased by herself or someone with a stronger OS. If the mark is ON the person with higher OS, they can pay [100 Reiatsu] to erase the mark. This mark can also happen incidentally when Ume blocks a non-spiritual attack with her sword that "pops" one or more of the eyes. The distance she can see is just the normal distance that she can see out from one of her own eyeballs and the marks can be covered or obscured the way normal vision can be.
If Ume puts a mark on an opponent, it will count as a Distraction of 1 Skill Stage for each Mark, as the marked target (If it's sentient) is distracted by being able to see through a second, third, fourth, etc, viewpoint, As a marked sentient entity can see through a mark just like Ume can but are not gripping Nijuume's handle or used to this effect. Clothes or held items that are marked will affect the target as though they were marked on the skin itself. Items and clothes can be dropped/removed to end any Distraction Stage increases the next post, of course.
For most Marks, Ume has to slap the point she wants to mark and crush an eyeball against it, so she risks putting herself at danger against dangerous foes. She can, however. also whip an eyeball like a baseball, but it has much less accuracy and only a speed of 300, so it's fairly dodge-able for opponents or, she can imbue an eyeball for [200 Reiatsu] to make the eyeball with a homing ability that follows the target at 300 speed. It stops if the sight line is broken, at which point it falls inert and marks the first thing touched. The marks look like eyeballs fit into whatever space they are made to occupy, as if there was a socket built to hold the eyeball.
When her "sword" runs out of eyeballs, she must sheath her sword and expend [400 Reiatsu] to "refill" the bar with eyeballs. Ume can always choose to dismiss a mark if she chooses to.
Distraction Skill Stages can be ignored for any combination of Calm Mind and/or Battle Focus = to the skill stage. For example, if there is a Distraction of 3 Skill Stage, a Battle Focus of 3 or Battle Focus of 2 and Calm Mind of 1 would be enough to ignore it. Otherwise, the marked target is treated as being distracted and unable to focus. If a Distraction Stage ever reaches double what the target is able to ignore, then they will be paralyzed for a post, as they are finally completely overloaded with information. Any temporary Skill stages will immediately be removed, however, if there are marks that cause constant Skill Stage Increases on the target, this could cause successive posts of paralyzation if the marks are not removed/covered.
Ume can also passively change HOW she sees things by changing the spectrum with which she sees them. She can pick any point on the light spectrum including night vision, Infrared, X-Ray. The default is normal human eyes and each different spectrum setting is subject to the same restrictions it would have normally. (X-Ray can't see through lead, for example) The switch costs [25 Reiatsu].
Bankai Overall Ability:
Where Nijuume looks outward, Kokoronome looks inward. When bankai is released, Ume's eyes glow and every aspect of Nijuume is replaced with a glowing third eye in the middle of Ume's forehead. The jug and eyeball bar is replaced with a pair of large scissors in her hands. The scissors are big enough to hold like a two handed sword, gripping the closed scissors by the handle with two hands.
Ume becomes connected to a target she had marked with her shikai by a red, psychic thread for as long as the Bankai remains (that mark, and all marks, disappear). With this connection, Ume can read the target's surface thoughts and communicate with them telepathically. Ume uses Kokoronome's ability to probe deeper and make manifest what it finds. A marked target grows a small, glowing third eye of their own. A target of Kokoronome can choose to let Ume roam through their Mind and extract information to be able to focus on the outside world, or, they can fight with Ume inside their own inner world. Either way, the two eyes are connected by a red thread for as long as the Bankai is active.
Inside the target's inner world, Ume creates six giant, unblinking eyes that surround the inner world and illuminate the battlefield .
Each round Kokoronome is active, one of the eyes closes, representing the thread that connects Ume and the target loosening. When the last eye closes, the inner world is enveloped in total darkness and the thread that connects Ume and her opponent is thin enough to cut. Once the inner world has gone completely dark, the connection can severed- violently, as it is loose enough to be cut by Ume's scissors. Thanks to Ume's Third Eye while Kokoronome is active, she can see regardless of how much illumination is in the inner world and has the presence of mind to be able to survive against and move around and through any ambient effects of the inner world.
Those who can see in the dark or create their own sources of illumination can counteract this aspect of the bankai, though it doesn't extend the bankai timer. Information can always be traded to counter Kokoronome's abilities as well. A dark secret, a weakness, anything that would tangibly benefit Ume in either the short or long term qualifies. This can be used to keep an eye open. (Though it doesn't extend the time of the Bankai). To signify this, the open eye begins crying. A closing eye can alos be kept open by "forgetting" a technique. The "forgotten" technique is essentially sealed away while the bankai is active. "Forgotgten" technioques can't be used inside or outside of the inner world and are "remembered" one techn ique per post after Ume's bankai ends.
Counteracting [Heart of Darkness] with information must be information so valuable to the target that they would be willing to die to keep it a secret. Kokoronome knows. A technique cannot be forgotten to counteract [Heart of Darkness]
If a target chooses to let Ume roam free, each round the bankai is active, Ume will learn information as if the target had chosen to counter one of Ume's abilities by giving information. Ume can end Kokoronome early and without using [Heart of Darkness], though in conclusion, she would learn a piece of information as if [Heart of Darkness] was countered.
Choosing to fight Ume inside their own inner world temporarily gives the target the Focused Eye 3 skill, with the focus being the Inner World Ume, giving the target what it needs to try and fend off Ume, but making them rather clumsy and vulnerable on the outside. As Ume is still holding onto her zanpakutou's handle, she has no problem splitting her attention between fighting inside the inner world and protecting herself outside of it.
Ume can also choose to keep the last eye open to try and gain more knowledge or seal more techniques using [River Lethe]. The target can Choose to seal the final eye and force [Heart of Darkness] to trigger.
Zanpakuto Techniques:
[200 Reiatsu] Eye-A-Jitsu - Ume can rapidly sheathe/unsheathe her zanpakutou and swing it in a slicing arc forward, taking some of the juice inside the jug and flinging it at an opponent. If they are splashed with the juice (Even on the clothes), they will momentarily see everything that Ume does. This affect is somewhat slow and initially takes the form of distracting snow/static in the corners of the opponent's eyes until it takes full effect. Someone hit by Eye-A-Jitsu gains a Distraction Skill Stage immediately. It then goes up a stage each post until the user can no longer focus (Double their ability to ignore the Distraction Skill Level). Then, as the information overwhelms them, they are paralyzed for one post, seeing everything that Ume sees all at once. After that, the juice has sufficiently dried. The Distraction Skill Stages resets to 0 (+ any Skill Stages gained from being already marked)
[100 Reiatsu] Blink/Wink - Because Ume is a perma-release, her Reiatsu is uncontrollable. It is constantly spilling out of her, but if she concentrates it, she can focus it. By paying [100] Reiatsu per mark or eyeball, she can "close" the eye or mark violently exploding it like a grenade. The explosion is like a flash bang, sending out a disorienting and damaging wave. Those who are in close proximity (5ft. Radius), who can't look away, have a Distraction Stage added to them for one post. Those who are in range (15ft Radius) also suffer damage roughly equal to an exploding grenade. The damage, and length of posts the Distraction Stage is added increases for each simultaneous Mark or Eyeball consumed that a target is affected by. The mark or eyeball "Blinks" and then glows white before it "explodes." For, example, if two Marks/Eyeballs explode simultaneously in range, then rather than add a second distraction stage, the added distraction stage would last two posts, but the damage would be like being caught in the radii of two exploding grenades.
Alternatively, if Ume has "Marked" something, she can focus to expend reiatsu less violently. Instead of exploding a mark, Ume can expend [50 reiatsu] to force the object that has been marked to move towards another mark. If the marked object is moving then it will continue to move at the same speed, just changing its trajectory. If it is not moving, then it will be shoved or pushed towards the other mark that at it's speed (Or Ume's, whichever is faster). If the mark collides with something, then it is consumed (as if Blink was activated). If it touches another mark, then both marks will explode as if Blink was used, Consuming [200 Reiatsu] but having the effect as if 3 marks were consumed instead of the two.
When Wink is used, Ume can spend [50 Reiatsu] to not have the colliding marks consumed.
Bankai Techniques
[River Lethe] - Inside the mind, Ume can spend [100 Reiatsu] to pull a thread of memory up and use it to gain what she wants. When the thread is pulled, the target can choose: Close an eye to let the thread dissipate, shortening the bankai, but also getting closer to [Heart of Darkness] faster (as another eye will close at the "round's" end) Or give a piece of information or Seal a Technique as if they were choosing to keep an eye open.
[Heart of Darkness - 100 Reiatsu for each 50% Damage] When Ume's bankai ends, unless she is rendered unconscious, the connection between Mind's Eyes is severed violently by her scissors. Having probed the target's mind thoroughly, the severed connection's feedback causes internal damage. For each eye that has closed, Kokoronome does 50% of her OS (to a Max of 3x OS). It will always deal at least 50% unless "An Ultimate Secret" is revealed. This damage is more like "system shock" than anything physical. It could, for all intents and purposes, be considered "Psychic" damage and would affect the body in such a way as violent mental trauma would.
Counteracting [Heart of Darkness] with information must be information so valuable to the target that they would be willing to die to keep it a secret, otherwise. Kokoronome knows what darkness lurks in the hearts of men's minds.
When Kokoronome Ends, if any techniques were sealed, the memory of them return at a rate of one technique per post, if they are still in battle.
Other Techniques 2/10:
{Shunpo (Flash Steps)}
Technique Name: Shunpo (Flash Steps)
Class: 7
Technique Type: Kidō
Technique Element: None
Technique Description and Effects:
A movement technique that allows the user to move faster than the eye can follow. The focal point that determines the basis of this technique is speed. As speed is the main point of the technique, the method is best characterized by how fast one can get from Point A to Point B in the least amount of steps. Training and skill are what determines how fast a user of Shunpo can move. Those of little skill in the technique or those who haven't used it for an extended amount of time would obviously be out of practice, causing those individuals to be considerably slower. This requires the use of more steps to move the same distance and become tired more easily in a shorter amount of time. A single step magnifies speed for that step by ten times. Shunpo uses fifty Reiatsu per step. This one is automatically learned in the academy. All Shinigami know this when created. This technique does not take up a technique slot.
How to use technique:
Focus of Reishi around the feet area and launch off into a single blurring step. It is not unlike teleportation in appearance, but it is simply extremely fast movement. It is often used to gain an edge in a single moment of combat or to dodge incoming attacks.

{Hado #4: Byakurai (Pale Lightning)}Technique Name: Hado #4: Byakurai (Pale Lightning)
Class: 7
Technique Type: Kido
Technique Element: Thunder
Technique Description and Effects: The user fires a concentrated, powerful lightning bolt from their finger that pierces a target.
How to use technique: Speak the spell and point hand at the target.
Incantation and Effect: "Arise god of thunder! Awake mother of storms! Unleash the lighting on the sinners!" When the incantation is spoken, the Reiatsu Strength used to determine the power of Byakurai is increased by 10%. (i.e. 100 Reiatsu Strength is treated as 110.)

-History-
Birthplace: Soul Society - Rukongai - Shihoin Family Compound
Current Residence: Squad 12 Barracks
Memorable Figures: Makoto Shihoin (Grandmother), Kimiko Shihoin (Cousin)
History:
Ume comes from the prestigious Shihoin family. Her grandmother is Makoto Shihoin. In spite of the pedigree of her line, Ume's origins are not as grandiose. Her mother, Megumi, was a free spirit. She rebuked the traditions of the Shihoin, abdicating her heir tot he Estate for her own freedom and desires. This led her to become pregnant at an early age to someone who was not hand selected by the family. A controversy like this was something that could definitely undo the fabric of the noble family, but, as with any problem, the Shihoin's had a solution.
Keiko, as she was named at birth after her great, great grandmother, was presented not as Megumi's daughter, but as a miraculous late birth by the aging Makoto. Because of this, Ume was raised with Makoto, away from her mother, as Makoto's own child and Megumi's younger sister. With the secret in tact and Megumi's wild oats sown, she settled down and married properly. Her punishment for her indescretion was not being able to see Ume.
Ume, on the other hand, was kept mostly in isolation from the family. Makoto found it best to raise her apart from the rest, lest there be too much prying into their family history. Ume was also very protected as a child. Maids (or guards, rather) were on hand twenty four hours to keep an eye on her. AAs she grew up, she was not expected to do anything but exist. As a bastard child, she was in no position to receive a position of power within the Shihoin, yet, as part of the family, she got to enjoy all of the trappings of nobility. The weird combination of shelter without responsibility and power without consequence helped shape Ume early on.
It led Ume to make her way to the human world when she was starting to grow up. She convinced some members of Squad 13 to got on a mission to the world of the living. There, she caught the emerging modern world. It was the turn of the century, and there were wonderous machines and these self propelled automobiles. The mission would have been fairly routine, but Ume's presence, turned it into a dangerous escapade. She was nearly devoured by a Hollow, and had to watch a few of the Juusanbantai get devoured protecting her. The incident stuck with her. She had only been saved by reinforcements who had noticed a spike in reiatsu. Ume hadn't known at the time, but it had been her that had both called the Hollow and fended it off long enough for help. The others noticed it, though.
As Ume came of age, it became noticeable that she was special, even among Shihoin. Her reiatsu just leaked from her and her grandmother tried to help her train, but Ume wasn't interested. The thought of fighting hollows terrified her. She would never even look at another Hollow again, if she could help it. The sudden friction between her Grandmother's desires to put her in the academy and Ume's continued distancing of herself from everyone and everything started to create tension.
When she was feeling particularly hassled, Ume would leave the Estate, trying to lose her servants in the labyrinthian laboratories of Squad 12. They, unlike every other squad, seemed to understand the value of technology. Some of them even had tech from the modern world and Ume was absolutely fascinated by it. She took to taking it apart and putting it back together again, and understood what mass production and distribution would mean for Soul Society. The members of Squad 12 took to her curious nature as well and lamented that she couldn't join up with them.
Eventually, Ume came and went of age. Her grandmother had all but given up trying to convince Ume to do anything, as the girl locked herself in her room day and night and tinkered with whatever tech she could abscond from the Juunibantai. Eventually, though, even Ume became bored of her surroundings. She felt trapped in her gilded cage and missed what happened between herself and her Grandmother's relationship. However, as the two began to become close again, Ume, who had started spying on the members of the Estate, thanks to some new and interesting tech called "cameras." Had heard Makoto discussing Ume and her situation with her grandfather.
Learning the truth made Ume furious. She was ready to leave behind her stupid name, her stupid life and everything that came with it. Unfortunately, she had no where to go... Except The Academy. Ume enlisted under the false name Ume Oboro and joined up. While her swordsmanship left something to be desired, it was passable enough for her to pass the academy, considering she had nearly perfect marks everywhere else. Now, Ume could finally go where she wanted and do what she wanted. The glorious freedom would have her back in Squad 12, once she conquered one of her greatest fears.
She was put in an expedition, as part of her graduating class, to fight, subdue, and kill a Hollow. It was... another disastrous episode. Some of her fellow graduates did not make it back alive and once again, it was Ume who both cause, and was saved by, her own profuse reiatsu. This incident put another indelible mark on Ume. Thankfully, her request to join Squad 12 was approved. She could now finally had the freedom to do as she pleased and make her mark in her own way. One day she might reveal the secret of her bastard existence, or maybe she would reveal herself to be a true shihoin after garnering a number of accomplishments for her own experiments. Maybe she could finally bring the Soul Society out of the centuries of stagnation it seemed to enjoy. Whatever she did, it would be her choice from now on.
