"Good morning! You busy? I have a thing to show you." It was 8:00am on a Saturday, and Irina, having discovered a new trick, was eager to share with Kazura. Whether she received confirmation from him or not, Irina would bound up to his office at 8:15 am. Since Saturday was her day to sleep in, she had already been awake since 6:00. In that time, she'd gone for a run, made and eaten an omelet, showered, and plaited her hair into a winding French braid before her normally quite well-behaved cat Beastie had began scratching her couch.
"No! Bad beastie!" she'd chastised, shaking a finger at the large, orange feline, who had just received a brand new scratching post as a gift last week, but instead decided that he preferred to play with its box. Irina was especially miffed knowing that reupholstering the sofa would probably be just as expensive as replacing it, and she had no plans to do either of those things, nor live with a shredded-looking couch.
As she shook her index finger at the tabby fluffball, a bright light about the size of her fingernail, generated from her reiatsu, appeared at the tip of the finger. Irina recoiled, alarmed due to this happening completely accidentally. As she jumped back, the fingertip light fizzled out into a bright flash that left her unable to see anything for about 5 seconds that felt like eternity. Are you serious, Irina? she thought frantically. Last week I lose my hearing, now I blind myself? I wasn't even trying to do anything!
She mentally reprimanded herself until she noticed her vision first return as a tunnel in the front of her field of view, then it expanded all the way to the periphery. Phew. That's a relief. Irina apologized profusely to the bewildered Bestie (whom she suspected was now classically conditioned to leave the couch alone) before heading out to meet Kazura to show off her new stunt. She hoped Karen, Kazura's friendly secretary, was the one who was on duty today.
But nope, apparently it was Nancy's shift. "Good morning, Miss Davayte. Here to see Mr. Uzaki-" she raised her eyebrows judgmentally- "Again?" Irina, who had, frankly, been trying to get on Nancy's good side since Nancy had assumed Irina was a stripper when she first started working at UE about six years ago, breezed over the question, returning it with one of her own and what she hoped was a winning smile.
"What's the most important thing you need from Mr. Uzaki today?" This was a system she'd developed with Karen. Noticing Karen's harried look a couple of years prior, Irina had begun stopping by her office on most occasions that she was headed to see Kazura, getting one or two tasks from her that Kazura needed to complete to make sure nothing in the company would come to a grinding halt. Karen didn't feel that, as an administrative assistant, she needed to tell the boss what to do, but bossy Irina didn't mind nudging him towards the things he needed to take care of.
Nancy, an older, stern woman, wasn't particularly timid, and she had no problem telling Kazura what he should be doing. Still, when Kazura got in one of his...states, he wasn't exactly perfectly attentive to messages, and she didn't mind extending Nancy the same courtesy that she gave Karen. "He does need to approve the Board's choice for a new COO. They already sent a recommendation. He just needs to sign off on it. I've sent him the document three times," she said reluctantly. "Got it. I'll see what I can do." Irina bobbed out before Nancy could make any further comment.
She'd knock on Kazura's door, and if he answered, she'd greet him brightly. "Hey! You have some polarized sunglasses handy, right?" Not exactly a traditional salutation, but she felt that she and Kazura were past formalities.
