{Lucien Dantes Faceclaim}
Faceclaim: Galahad (Fate Grand Order)
Lucien is a tall, gentle looking man with a slightly sickly look. His color is pale, and his face is somewhat gaunt, but despite this, there is a calm, collected and kind look in his eyes. Lucien has bright, golden eyes—an unnatural color that indicates his place among the Emperor’s chosen people. Not that those without golden eyes have no place! But this truly shows Lucien is one of the Chosen. It’s in his very genetics. Despite that, if one looks deeper there is an unfathomably sad look in the depths of his eyes as well that glimmers through with varying strengths depending on Lucien’s mood. Lucien has short, wavy platinum hair—pale to the point that it is almost white in color. It is unkempt and messy, though thankfully its short length prevents it getting in the way, aside from one long bang that hangs down in front of one of his eyes. Lucien often has slight bags under his eyes, as a result of his chronic illness, and coughs frequently. His lips are equally pale with his face. Lucien is usually wearing a soft, pleasant smile, not unlike that of a doting father to a precocious child. When in battle, of course, however, his face is usually covered by a black helmet, with a glowing red visor slit, as Lucien finds this helps create a divide between his opponent and himself that makes it easier to do his job. In the event that Lucien is on the battlefield without his helmet, that gentle expression is replaced with a stern look, though the sorrow is still evident in his eyes when he beholds the situation at hand.
Lucien is reasonably tall, standing at a height of five foot ten, and has a slender build. Really it doesn’t look like there is much muscle on there at all. Despite that, what muscle Lucien does have is toned and powerful, and he augments himself with his spirit pressure quite often to augment his physical condition. In fact, that’s likely the only reason he’s still alive. Lucien’s immense spiritual pressure, honed by years of practice. Lucien stands with one of two postures. When walking the Sillbern, Lucien adopts a very relaxed and easygoing posture, moving at a generally slow walk. Lucien seems to take most things slow and easy, until he is called to duty. Lucien with his “game face” on, is professional and rigid in posture. He stands straight and tall, at attention. Hands firmly at his side. The posture of a practiced soldier. It would be inaccurate though, to say Lucien has a soldier’s build. As mentioned above, he’s pretty slender and despite his decent height he has very little muscle mass. No six-pack or anything, just a slim, somewhat toned body.
As far as apparel goes, Lucien favors several uniforms, of purple and black primarily. His standard apparel when officially on-duty incorporates several design elements, starting with a skin-tight, black long-sleeved shirt, over which he wears a black cuirass with dark violet highlights. The cuirass completely protects his torso and includes a gorget to protect his throat. On top of this, Lucien wears a purple cloak-like cloth over both shoulders almost like pauldrons, which are buckled to his armor. These drape down to about his biceps but no further. Lucien affixes vambraces to both arms, and wears black gauntlets, typically. His lower apparel typically consists of similarly black attire, including long pants and black boots.
When he has one on hand, Lucien also likes to wear a sword into battle. His preferred weapon is a European straight-bladed arming sword, suited for one handed use. A basic but effective straight golden bar serves as the cross-guard for this weapon, a brown-wrapped handle and a golden orb for a pommel. Very simplistic in design, but efficient. Designed precisely for its given purpose, which Lucien prefers.
For more formal events, or for daily life, Lucien will instead adopt a more dress-like attire. He will discard the armored segments of his uniform, and instead go for a more classy look. Lucien’s formal attire typically consists of a black collared shirt, underneath a purple dress-jacket, and a pair of black gloves, as well as black dress pants and lace-less dress shoes. For the highest formal events, Lucien will adopt the all-white colors associated with the Vandenreich, but his uniform will otherwise be fairly similar, featuring gold trim along the collars and cuffs of his uniform. Lucien also bears a single silver and golden stud earring in his left ear, that serves as his Spirit Fragment.
Lucien also has some general casual attire as well. For relaxing or lounging around his home, when not expecting company, he actually dresses.... exceedingly casually. T-shirts and shorts or track pants are common attire for Lucien Dantes when nobody else is around. He knows he's not supposed to look like this as a representative of the Vandenreich, but if it's just "him time" he honestly doesn't see what's so wrong about just wearing something casual and comfy. He's certain the Emperor won't judge, and nobody is probably going to see him dressed like that, right? At least nobody important? If by chance Lucien does want to go out, he'll usually throw on a quick, light windbreaker jacket or something like that. He's not super picky about his off-duty clothing unless he expects to be seeing someone.

Dislikes:
Broken Promises: “Keeping one’s word is a beautiful thing, and it is a tragedy to see them shattered. If everyone could keep their promises to one another, this world would be a beautiful place.”
Unrequited Love: “This is a true agony to behold. True, passionate emotion that is barred. I would rather see a world where such a thing is long in the past.”
Lemons: “Unfortunately, their sour taste is something that is not particularly palatable to my appetite. I’m terribly sorry lemon lovers of the world.”
Fatalism: “All of us have our fates preordained from the moment of our conception. Even now, each and every one of our souls has all of our lives planned out for us. We can’t escape our fate, but we can try to fight it all the same.”
Despair:“Although it is an inevitable result of the pain, loss and suffering all who endure life must face, that does not mean it is a pleasant thing. I truly pity those who have fallen into despair, and would uplift all of them if I could—though I am well aware that such a thing is easy to say, but quite difficult to achieve.”
Violence: “There should be a better way. Even when there is not. Even if it is an absolute certainty that violence is necessary, it is cruel that there is not another way.”
War: “If you know my thoughts on violence, you know my thoughts on war. It is my desire to end war as quickly and efficiently as possible. All war does is cause strife, pain, and suffering. It ends lives that would otherwise be productive and beautiful and sows’ conflict. Yes, it may help resolve other conflicts, but it will always sow seeds of discontent in its wake. It is not a solution. Only a failure to answer.”
Enslavement: “The complete loss of freedom and choice is an anathema to what I would see in the world. Rather for every person to choose their own path, for good or ill, than be needlessly driven like an ox, blindly along a path they have neither chosen, nor understand.”
Pain: “It’s… pointless. True, that through pain there can be growth. Understanding. Acceptance. But in a perfect world, that wouldn’t be necessary. In this world, pain is necessary. But that in and of itself is so sad…”
Heavy Metal Music: “Ah… I’m afraid this… really isn’t my style of music. If you enjoy it, I am glad to hear that but… please. Just… Not while I’m around please? It’s really not to my tastes.”
Likes:
Hope: “Hope is a brilliant, shining light in the dark. Even if it’s destined to be snuffed out, that it can shine at all. Even for a few brilliant moments, is something remarkable and beautiful.”
Peace: "This is my goal. True peace. A world without the need for violence, and peaceful coexistence between all beings."
Quiet Nights: "The world at rest. At peace. To sit out beneath a starry sky, and to marvel at the enormity of the universe. It makes you realize how miraculous creation truly is, and how insignificant we are. All of us equally insignificant."
Rainy Days: "There is something peaceful and calming about the rain coming down on a balcony, whilst you sit under it. To hear the rain pelting off the roof of a structure. To smell the scent of wet grass.
Diplomacy: "Diplomacy is infinitely preferable to violence. If a battle can be ended before it starts-- that is the best possible outcome."
Helping People: "If there is a way to achieve meaning in my own life, it is in the impact I have in others. If I create a positive impact in the lives of enough people, maybe, just maybe, the world will begin to change for the better."
Courage: "Courage is a virtue I wholly admire. The will and strength to stand strong in the face of adversity. The ability to push forwards when every part of your mind screams to flee, or to cower. If it is at all possible to change Fate. If it is at all possible to create meaning in existence, it is the courageous that will find the way. It is the courageous that have the greatest hope of making meaning in this meaningless world."
Cats: "Cats are sweet, charming little creatures. When it comes to those who are masters of their own fate, they truly stand out. And besides. They are very soft, warm and fluffy, and they feel nice to pet."
Sweet foods: "I do admittedly have quite the sweet tooth. I am quite fond of cakes, sweets, or anything particularly sugary. It's a weakness to be certain, but not an unpleasant one."
The Vandenreich: "The Vandenreich is the light against the darkness. The flame that holds back the night. The shelter in the storm. Within the Vandenreich we are in harmony. United in one purpose by our own choices. I want to spread this unity to the rest of the world."
Birds: "Birds are said to be symbols of freedom and I admire them and their beauty. I would not see them in cages, but flying freely to come and go as they please as they flit away their lives in joyous bliss."
Dogs: "Dogs are such kind, loyal beasts. They will comfort you when you are saddened, and can somehow always sense that. We really do not deserve them. And they give hugs too, which is both adorable and very sweet of them."
Reading: "Reading. Ah... Literature. A tool to both sharpen the mind and send it to places far away. Books and literature can almost be thought of as someone's legacy on a page. Perhaps... Perhaps I may be able to pen a work of my own one day. One day."
Piano: "It's a magnificent, sophisticated instrument, which can produce such magnificent melodies. All the great original composers were primarily pianists, after all, and I think there's a reason for that."
Tea: "The drink of choice for European nobility for centuries, and for good cause. While it may not be quite as sweet as other beverages, it is a remarkably calming drink and quite enjoyable on a cold winter night."
Flaws:
Frail health: Lucien Dantes has been beset by a weak immune system since his life began. Sickly and pale, it is a testament to his immense spiritual power that he has managed to keep himself alive this long. Lucien is often beset by sickness, and is frequently coughing, on occasion to the point that he coughs up blood when he pushes himself too hard. This taxes Lucien greatly, and means that when he is not fighting, he is often forced to rest, recuperate and take things easy, as he doesn’t even recover as quickly as many of the other Vandenreich without drawing heavily on his Quincy powers.
Depression: Lucien suffers from what could easily be construed as major depression. His melancholy nature is a result of his diminished perspective of life and complete lack of purpose or reason to exist. Lucien feels as if his existence is worthless, and as a result there is a certain weariness in him at all times, compounded with every atrocity he must commit. Lucien, deep down, doesn’t believe he deserves salvation and that he is doomed to a pointless end one day. While Lucien doesn’t eagerly rush for death, he also sees no reason in continuing to live either. This causes Lucien to have huge issues with personal self esteem though it does at least taught him humility.
Overprotective: Lucien is fiercely overprotective of people. Of basically everyone. Everyone. Nobody dies if he can avoid it, but this goes doubly for people he is close to. Lucien will go to extreme lengths to protect the people he has grown attached to, and is willing to compromise his beliefs for such individuals, even to the point of hypocrisy.
Lack of Self Preservation: Because of Lucien’s devastating lack of self-worth, coupled with his Fatalism it can lead to Lucien being fairly trivial with his life. Since he doesn’t see his life as something valuable, he will freely risk it. While he won’t exactly throw it away for no reason at all (as a meaningless death is one of his fears), Lucien won’t go to massively great lengths to save himself, especially not at the expense of others. His fatalism has caused Lucien to believe that if he has a further purpose, then he will not die until he has achieved whatever it is, and if he dies there, that is the extent of his purpose in the world. Sure, he ultimately thinks it will amount to nothing either way, and therefore he holds his life very cheaply.
Habits:
Coughing: Errr.... Well. A bit less of a habit and more of a necessity. Due to Lucien's illness he often finds himself coughing extensively and frequently. Mid-sentence and if he's unlucky, sometimes he'll even start coughing in the middle of battle as well, if he begins to overtax himself. Lucien would be a terrible stealth agent, as the risk of him breaking out into a fit of coughing would probably give him away about twenty seconds into his first mission.
Long walks in nature: Lucien loves the sweet tranquility of nature. The quiet. The distant chirping of birds and crickets or perhaps the croaking of frogs. Now, note that due to his weak constitution, Lucien isn't exactly a huge outdoorsman, bushwhacking his way through the underbrush. No, he's the sort of person that will take the nice gentle, easy path to a nice field, or comfortable spot in the woods or even to a lake shore, and just enjoy the beauty of the world at peace. Lucien goes on such walks often through the parks of the Sillbern, or the woods of the Human world when he can. Anytime Lucien is feeling well enough to go on a trek, and is not honing his skills or taking care of his pets at home, he is likely out and about, looking at nature.
Reading: Lucien is a huge literature nerd. When he spent his time recuperating in medical wards, or forced to stay at home due to his illness, too weak to play, train or exercise much beyond walking around the house, he read books. Lucien is particularly fond of the fantasy genre-- escaping to strange, mysterious worlds with new fantastic elements and tales. Happy endings are his favorites, but he is well read and versed in the classics as well. When Lucien is resting and recuperating he often reads, and keeps a fairly extensive library in his personal home in the Sillbern for recreational purposes.
Collecting stray cats: ....Okay, look, cats are cute, and Lucien has a soft heart. They're lower maintenance than dogs, and so when Lucien goes out in the Human World and finds some lonely stray, flea-bitten cat in an alleyway, he can't help but to try to rescue it. And well. He figures the Sillbern is a good, loving home for them. He doesn't "adopt" the cats, persay, so much as he provides them a place of shelter. Fortunately, Lucien usually doesn't go to the major cities of the Human World, where strays are in abundance and he'd never outright steal someone else's cat, so his "collection" of adopted strays is still mercifully pretty small at only five or six right now. Give him time though, and enough forays into the human world, and that number will probably go up though.
Playing the Piano: Lucien is a trained pianist, it's another of the hobbies he's picked up in a life largely marked by long periods of sedentary life where the doctors advised him against intense physical activity. While he is not as much an avid pianist as he is a reader, he is still fond of the piano and gives a bit of time each day to try and play a piece or two when he can. Lucien doesn't typically use electric keyboards or anything like that though, he much prefers the real, genuine grand piano article, or similar.
Fears:
A meaningless Death: Lucien doesn’t fear death. What he fears is that his death will be without purpose or meaning. That he will die defending someone about to die anyways. That he will die on a mission that ultimately didn’t amount to anything. Or that he will simply succumb to his illness and die without having contributed anything to the world. And what he fears even more than that….
Inevitability: This is Lucien’s other great fear. That everything is predetermined. That he is right about the world, that is unsalvageable. And that no matter what he does, nothing he does will make a difference. It is why Lucien tries so hard to help others, because in his own way he is trying to fight against his fears. And yet, the fear remains deep in his heart. That ultimately, nothing he does matters. Lucien considers all the things he deems to be inevitable-- death, eternity, corruption, and the eventual cessation of all meaning, and it terrifies him.
Goals:
Change the World: This is a bit of a nebulous goal, so let’s get a little more specific. Lucien’s primary goal is to make the world a better place. He believes the world is a sad, cruel place where bad things happen for little to no purpose, and wants to change that. Even if only by a little, Lucien endeavors to improve the world, bit by bit, person by person to create a true utopian society. This is the reason behind his work in the Vandenreich, as he believes the Vandenreich is the faction that can truly bring that image to fruition-- or at least has a better chance than any other faction. He thinks that changing the world has to start with the people within it, and he also aims to be that change in himself. Despite the misery of the world, he wants to try to repel it just a little. As noted by his fears up above, he doesn’t consider this goal realistic, or feasible, and believes that it’s doomed to fail. Even so, this is one thing that Lucien feels is worth trying to defy Fate against, even if he is convinced his failure is inevitable.
Find meaning in his own life: Lucien is not a very happy person at his core. Melancholy and despondent, with a very low self-image, Lucien doesn’t honestly believe he is someone of much value by himself. It’s the Vandenreich that have given him a purpose. That’s all. All of Lucien's self-worth and personal value is tied into as much as the Vandenreich gives him. All of Lucien’s meaning is in what he does for the organization. Lucien would very much like to find a reason to live for himself. To validate his own existence by his own will, instead of the will of other people. As before, he does not consider this a likely outcome, due to his own self image, but it is still something he wants to do, even if he has no conception of how to even begin working towards it. That might be a very useful first step actually. Maybe someone could help him out with that.
Alleviate the Elitism of the Vandenreich: Don’t mistake Lucien. Lucien is fully convinced of the righteousness of the Vandenreich. But he also acknowledges that the Vandenreich is full of mortals. Gifted, chosen mortals, but mortals nonetheless. Lucien has some reservations about how many of the other Vandenreich look down on other races. He would like to spread the idea to other members of the Vandenreich that other races are just as valuable and important as they are. That they are their equals not their lesser, for he believes that seeing other races as lesser beings will only continue to fuel a cycle of resentment and war. If all the races could come to accept one another then Lucien believes that would be a huge step forward in creating a better world, without the need for senseless violence and death.
Become Sternritter "B": Sternritter B is supposedly the member of the Vandenreich closest to the Emperor. As silly as it might sound, Lucien would like to attain that rank, if only because it is from that position he feels he could do the most good. He may not find a purpose in becoming Sternritter B, but he still feels it would put him in a position to earn sufficient respect among the Vandenreich to promote his views and feelings to them, without judgement. And it is the position as well, that he might be able to ask the Emperor personally, the reason he was born. The reason for his own existence, and if his life is really as meaningless as he fears it is.
Alignment: [Neutral Good]
Overall Personality:
If described with a single word, Lucien could be said to be melancholy. Although Lucien often wears a pleasant expression and even a smile at times, there is a sense of fatigue to his motions, as though he is weary of life. In this manner, Lucien is somewhat of a paradox, being supportive of others but quite down on himself. Lucien is a tool. A weapon of the Vandenreich, and while he dislikes this hand that he has been dealt, he believes it is his duty to fulfill it. Perhaps even his duty to fulfill it. Lucien is melancholy, because he does not believe he truly has a cause to fight for. He has a purpose, yes, but that purpose is divinely ordained, and was not one of his own choosing. Lucien might have fought for the Vandenreich anyways, but it was not his choice to do so. If that seems somewhat nonsensical, Lucien is well aware of that. For Lucien, he considers there to be an important distinction between being given your reason to live by another, and forging one for yourself. Even if both end up being ultimately meaningless in the long run, Lucien still feels there's something that draws him to the fantasy of the idea. Of a purpose and meaning to his life beyond a simple soldier or commander of the Vandenreich. This is something he doesn't often verbally talk about of course! Such talk among the Vandenreich might be seem as blasphemy, and Lucien does his best to quiet such thoughts even within his own mind, but he can't help but feel like he's missing something, and suspects that is probably that he has no personal drive, beyond the Vandenreich's goals of a utopia. No individuals to live and die for, and nothing but his duty. Which may tie right into the next part of his personality.....
What Lucien values in this world is choice. Or rather the power and freedom to choose. He considers people’s ability to choose their own fates to be a beautiful thing, regardless of what that fate is, and considers nearly everyone he meets to be beautiful in their own way. In this he differs from the Vandenreich, many of whom look down upon non-Vandenreich or even non-Quincy. Lucien does not. Whether they are Shinigami, Human, Hollow or even Akki, Lucien admires and respects all races, provided they meet this simple criteria—that they have taken hold of their own fate. This idea is a little off about Lucien though, because he sees one’s ability to choose their own fate as a very, very broad category. Even the decision to place your fate in the hands of another, Lucien respects, because it was your choice to do so.
As a result of this, even if Lucien thinks that someone’s decision is futile and incapable of truly changing anything, he admires people who fight against the inevitable. To know the end has come, and to stand resolute and determined, instead of succumbing to despair, is something that is truly worthy of praise. However, Lucien is also compassionate. He doesn’t judge people for not doing that. If it was easy to stand strong in the face of inevitable fate, it wouldn’t be impressive when people did it. Lucien seeks to help such individuals stand again. Yes, Lucien would even help an enemy stand, so that they could choose whether or not to battle against the inevitable with their full faculties available to them. And if they happened to choose the cold hand of death, Lucien would, just as compassionately give it to them, soothing their passing with soft words of comfort. We’ll come back to this last sentence in a little bit.
Lucien is someone who is honorable and resolute in his decisions. He stands by his word, though he is someone who would use a loophole and play around with “exact words” if it suited his purposes. But lie? No. Lucien won’t lie to someone. Not to his worst enemy, not to his best friend, not even if it would save the world to do so. He’s too honest at times even when it might be better to hold his tongue. Not that he won’t use a little word play to try and soften hard truths, if he thinks the situation calls for it. Which he normally doesn’t. Lucien knows life is cruel. Knows life is hard and full of suffering and turmoil. He’s seen it many times. Seen people suffer horrible fates for no good reason, and thinks that to lie to people and suggest that things aren’t as bad as they seem is doing them a disservice. Let them know just how much life sucks and will continue to suck to let them make the choice if they want to continue to persevere. Because he also knows that life can get better. But for that every high there will be a low. And so you had best be prepared because sometimes those lows last a very long time, and can make the highs not seem worth it anymore.
When it comes to relationships though, Lucien is open and kind to his peers and those he calls his friends. Really, he’s pretty kind to most people. He’s the sort of person that would sit in a park, under a tree, that animals just gravitate towards. Lucien has an inherently gentle nature, that is at odds with many of the Vandenreich. A nature that is strongly contrasted when he is on the job, but we’ll get there in a moment. Lucien is naturally predisposed towards being kind and gentle with most people. He likes to listen to people and to help them through their problems. He has no problem being a sounding board for someone’s bad day, and he’ll sit there, reassure them and validate them, then try and make their day better. He loves the outdoors, and while he’s not so much the hiking type or that sort of thing, he’d love to sit on the beach or out in a field on a calm summer day, or walk out under an umbrella in the rain, and just take in the beauty of nature.
But then… Lucien takes up the bow, and sets out on his mission. When he does this, it’s as though a switch has flipped in his mind. Although his tone may be similar, and he may even openly lament the things he must do, Lucien on the battlefield is taciturn and meticulous. He pays close attention to detail, and is quick to place his commands and orders. He takes his tasks very seriously, and does not tolerate disobedience in his subordinates. He acknowledges mistakes happen, but must play the part of the stern commander, praising those who have done well, and punishing those who have not. His word is absolute, and you will not disobey him, when lives are at stake. He is all for creative thinking on his subordinates behalf, but if you disregard his command, and people get hurt or killed as a result? …Well. Then you get to the part Lucien hates. The punishment. Lucien’s punishments for failure are severe, though seldom provided. Lucien does not like punishing his subordinates, but they’ll know a punishment is coming when he drops his commander façade and resumes his kind, gentlehearted nature. Remember that line above, about Lucien compassionately giving people the cold hand of death? He administers disciplinary measures in much the same way. Comforting the subordinate, and letting them know that he forgives them for their transgressions, right before delivering the judgement which has, in the past, proven fatal. But just as Lucien is all about freedom, he will always give such subordinates a chance. Or at least he thinks he does. Lucien will never adopt a form of execution that has a 100% success rate. Though some of his subordinates have been grievously wounded, if a subordinate survives Lucien’s execution attempt, then Lucien will consider their mistake fully pardoned, and think nothing more of the transgression.
Part of the reason for this is that Lucien does not like killing or hurting people. Even when that switch is flipped, Lucien still disdains the act of hurting or killing. It’s ironically one of the reasons he has focused himself on becoming an exceptional warrior and tactician, among other reasons. Lucien believes that if he can become an adequate commander and warrior, he can fight as efficiently as possible. Allowing him to end battles quickly, kill people painlessly and kill as few people as possible. A perfect battle for Lucien is one in which nobody dies, and nobody gets hurt, but he is well aware of the farcical nature of this desire. It does not, however, mean he won’t do what he can to limit the damage of war, and he will absolutely not tolerate innocents being involved in struggles they don’t deserve to be involved in.
Lucien sees the Vandenreich as one big family. Although arguments certainly happen in families, they should never risk creating tension or rifts. Debates and disagreements should be settled quickly and decisively, and not leave room to fester or grow into greater disagreements. Lucien is quite happy to play mediator in such situations, and help the Vandenreich sort their problems out in a civilized manner. And heck. If the best solution is just to let the two beat each other up a bit? Well…. It's not ideal, but if it resolves things quickly, and decisively so be it. Lucien values unity and harmony more than the discomfort from a quick trading of blows. So if a quick brawl is enough to settle a dispute, then have at it, just don’t kill each other. Family comes before all else, and should support one another, no matter what’s happened in the past. That is Lucien’s creed.
