Uzaki Enterprises. They were seen by many as the guardians of the human world. The good guys. The closest that this world had to something like the Avengers. Man, they had a good PR department, because they didn’t actually do a whole lot, especially as a team. Truth be told they were more like a frat house that just so happened to be home to a bunch of mutants and monsters. But at long last the group had finally started to come together and act a bit more like a cohesive unit. Their teamwork had been improving, and they were even starting to consider working together on various assignments.
In the midst of the hot summer days, Yoko Kusanagi had caught wind of something that merited a response greater than just her by herself. A trusted old buddy from the military had sent her some information about a situation going down in Cairo. A religious cult had been formed around what appeared to be a Bount. There was talk of a True Bount ritual, which Yoko knew nothing about. All she knew is that there were reports of civilian casualties at the hand of someone with spiritual powers. In her mind, that was unacceptable and warranted a response from Uzaki Enterprises. Given there was a cult worth of followers though, she wanted others with her on this mission lest she get overwhelmed.
A message went out to three people within Uzaki Enterprises: Luke, Kazura, and Irina. Luke got the message because Yoko had a good relationship with him… in her mind at least. She had helped him train, and she knew what he was capable of. On top of that, he was a Bount, and this was a Bount problem. He was likely to be the MVP of this mission. Kazura was another obvious inclusion. Not only would he want to be informed about a random trip to Egypt, he would probably pay for the whole thing out of company funds. Oh, and ya know, he was pretty strong nowadays… and Yoko hadn’t actually really talked to him in years.
Irina was the only one that Yoko felt kinda bad about her reason for including. She was included in the message simply because Yoko didn’t want to get accused of having an affair with Kazura while they were off in Egypt. Last time she was alone with him too much, it had caused her to go on a multi-year vacation. She had no clue what the other woman was capable of, but she would certainly be in good hands with all of them around.
All of them received a message that asked them to report to one of the conference rooms to discuss the situation, and how it should best be handled. Yoko, ever the diligent analyst when it came to situations like this, had whipped up a nice little powerpoint, complete with explosions for transitions. Though she had the background to plan a military operation, her skills at making a powerpoint for a company conference room… well let’s just say that she never learned how to use that stuff properly back in high school. Either way, she would be there whenever everyone else showed up, and waited for everyone to arrive before she began the briefing.

On this particular day, Irina was in a lab, choosing the appropriate type of plastic for a kayak that was in the manufacturing process. Frankly, she had no idea that UE had anything to do with kayaks before taking this job, but lately, she'd found that they actually manufacture all kinds of things. She was working in a lab as a materials science technician while she worked on her mechanical engineering degree, which suited her well. After some tests, she had decided that the simplest solution, using high-density polyethylene, would be best. Like a lot of twenty-year-olds, she hadn't figured out precisely what she wanted to do with her career. On another floor on alternative days of the week, Irina worked in the Spiritual Department. In regards to this part of her work, Irina received a message from Yoko.
She presented her findings on the materials for the kayaks to her supervisor, and headed to the conference room. She brought her laptop, and had a pen and notebook in her backpack if she needed to take notes. The type of person to bring two methods to take notes, Irina would appreciate Yoko's preparedness in putting together slides on the situation. The explosion sounds in the Powerpoint would make Irina question Yoko's age. She hadn't met anyone younger than forty or younger than twelve who used such distracting slide transitions. She couldn't be that old, right? Still, Irina would appreciate the effort and decided to like her, at least for the time being. "Hey, I'm Irina. I don't believe we have met? It's nice to meet you," Irina said, settling down to Yoko's right, and opening her laptop.
It was weird being where he was now. Only about a year ago Luke was cleaning floors in a grocery store, or stocking shelves with new product, and making just above minimum wage so he could afford his rent. He would worry about whether or not he had the money to get food. He had to deal with his Manager being mad at him that he was working overtime, despite being told numerous times he wasn’t supposed to be doing that. Not like they could do anything about it. Luke had been switching shifts. But, still, that’s where he had been career wise a year ago. Now? Now things were different.
Luke had his own window office in one of the biggest tech companies in the world. He made more money than he ever hoped he’d ever be able to back then. So much, in fact, that the man barely knew what to spend it on aside from the necessities. Most of it was stockpiling in his savings account. He had a good apartment now, the best he could find in the part of Karakura he decided to live in, and didn’t have to ever worry about going hungry again. Honestly, if you looked at Luke’s life purely from a normal person's standpoint you’d have thought he had it made. But, in reality, Luke’s life was harder now than it had been before.
Back then all he had to worry about was bills and his stomach. Back then he only had to worry about the things a normal human had to worry about. Back then Luke had just been a normal human. But now things weren’t that simple. Luke wasn’t just a regular human anymore. He was a superpowered mutant who had three other superpowered assholes living inside his head. He was someone who had to always be ready, always be on call, in case something bad happened in the city. Luke had dedicated his life, and his powers, to protecting and saving the weak. Fighting monsters, stopping superpowered criminals, risking his life for strangers and a better tomorrow, Luke couldn’t help but reflect a little on how simple his life used to be.
Raising the cup of coffee to his lips, Luke stood quietly as he looked out his offices window. It had been quiet this morning. His department, Help and Rescue Emergency Operations, functioned similar to Yoko Kusanagi’s Emergency Response unit. The difference was that while Yoko’s team responded to threats when they happened, like firefighters going after a fire, Luke’s was basically UE’s version of nine-one-one. If somebody, anybody, needed help with something related to the spiritual world it was Luke’s department that would answer. They were the “911 what’s your emergency” of UE. Sometimes Luke didn’t like that. Sometimes he wished he was on Yoko’s team and could just get out there when trouble showed up. He got antzy when things were quiet.
But just as he was thinking that he heard his phone ring. Not his office phone, but his personal cellphone actually. He blinked, though, when he heard the ringtone sound like a woman moaning. Did you change it again?”Maybe.” Jäger replied with a giggle. Annoyed, Luke made a mental note to change it later. Looking at the message, though, Luke blinked. ”This should be interesting..” Luke murmured to himself, wondering just what Yoko wanted to talk about. Sliding his phone into his pocket and grabbing his brown, leather, bikers jacket from its hook Luke left his office and make his way to the conference room.
