Hoshi was currently waiting for his new gigai to be readied. He had just finished training with his plasma form and yet again it had been consumed in the process, something that he was certain those from the Research and Development weren’t terribly thrilled about. Hoshi would be rolling his eyes if he had any so instead, he rolled them in his mind. It wasn’t HIS fault that the shinigami thought it was a great idea to just not need a body after he was let loose. If anything, he imagined that was how he’d be “disposed” of. A hollow or some other monster would find his pill while he rested and would eat it. Not a pleasant thought all things considered. Still, something good was coming from the little training session he’d just finished. He could feel himself reaching a new threshold. The downloaded programming was fighting him more and more as he continued to overwhelm the lesser levels of it. The problem with that meant that he was steadily finding it more and more difficult to confront as the programming had decided that if it couldn’t shut him down then it’d keep him from any power it could. Which meant locking away his upper levels of power.
What a fucking nuisance. The worst part of it all is that I could LIKELY have gotten over most of the programming if I just let the nerds investigate me further. But fat fucking chance that’s going to happen! I’d rather be smashed into a powder, added into water, and drunk by a hollow! Whatever . . . they’re almost done with my new body. . . But I need to figure out just what I need to do for this next bit. I’m so close I can almost taste my next level of power! But this fucking programing is making that a pain in the ass! As Hoshi continued to ponder over how he might override the programming by sheer force of will he “felt” a knock on his pill to alert him that someone was interacting with him. Obviously, he couldn’t respond in turn, but he knew what that meant. It was a means of letting him know that his body was reformed. So, he did the only thing he could and waited for him to be picked up and inserted into the newest iteration of his body.
A few minutes later, he'd find himself able to interact with the world again. He was nude but thankfully his personal quarters weren't exactly far off. A small blessing given the scientists really weren’t interested in giving him any additional clothing since he always ended up losing it for one reason or another. Still he waited around, responded to any questions and moved around as necessary for the scientists to be certain that he was good to go with the new body. Once he got the confirmation he made his way over to the exit and started walking down the hallway. In hindsight he should have asked what time it was given he was walking around in the buff. He shrugged and simply kept walking towards his room. It wasn’t like he had anything to hide anyway. He was smooth down below so it was more a social convention that he be clothed in anything he could find. Thankfully for Hoshi it was near the middle of the night so most, if any individuals, were gone, asleep, or out on a mission. Ultimately leaving his walk towards his room peaceful and undisturbed.
As he entered into his abode Hoshi found a small envelope on his desk. It was plain white with a large X on its front. “Huh, strange I usually would get called directly if there was a patrol or some other tasks to accomplish. I’ll check it once I’m clothed.” As Hoshi went to his closet to pull out yet another silk kimono he had to wonder if he was going to follow through with his usual red on white or if perhaps, he wanted to change things up and dress in a white on red kimono. He did have a couple other kimonos as well such as black and blue, blue and white, even a few oddly colored ones that used green, yellow, and one that had pink. Ultimately, he decided that his fan favorite of red on white would serve him well. Especially considering that he had to get to that letter and figure out what was going on with it. With that said he picked out his kimono, grabbed some socks, undergarments, and sandals. It wasn’t the easiest to dress himself in such clothing when he only had one arm to work with, but he wasn’t about to complain with a choice he made about his form a long while back. If he had an issue he could easily go, ask for a new arm of some kind. Still once he was dressed up in his usual attire, he finally made his way back to the letter and opened it up curious just what could be inside.
“Dear Hoshi, the board has accepted your request for a promotion. It’s our understanding that you are currently, at the time of this letter being written, having a new body being created. We’ve already informed the scientists to have the new placement of your tattoo be effective immediately. Again, congratulations on your new rank as a Lance of Xcution. With your new rank comes additional responsibilities. Starting with assisting in the training and development of the swords across the organization. You will have a handful of swords that are directly under your command, but you are tasked with keeping all swords in check. Additionally, you will be assigned missions beyond patrolling Karakura or standing guard at a specific point at the headquarters. These missions will initially be varied to help ascertain what strengths you possess so that you can be as useful to Xcution as possible. However, due to your “issues” with scientists it’s already been decided you will not be assisting those of the R&D sector beyond receiving specimens or materials. Instead, you will be considered for the other sectors so expect period missions that will test your capabilities.”
“Speaking of such tests, this will be your first test. It’s come to our attention that you have assaulted and possibly killed a moderately ranked member of the Soul Society. As the kill was not confirmed we’ve decided that we will give you a mission to kill a different shinigami. One that has been poking their nose into our business. To ensure that the message is sent properly we would like for you to kill the individual but not to dispose of the corpse. Leave it out in the open so that the Soul Society will understand where the lines are drawn. Additionally, R&D requests that, if possible, you take the zanpakuto from their person and return to base with it. There are some experiments that require one such zanpakuto. If it breaks however do not return with shards. Another can be found later. There is no specific time limit, but it should be stated that the sooner this can be resolved the better. Be certain to prepare so you can finish the kill this time. -Sincerely, Promotions Board.”
Hoshi checked his right palm and saw a gothic “X” was present upon it. He immediately smiled and jumped into the air. “FUCK YEA! THEY FINALLY TOOK NOTICE OF MY HARD WORK! Oh fuck I have a new job . . . I HAVE A JOB JUST FOR ME! AND IT'S KILLING SHINIGAMI! It’s a dream come true! Dare I ask the universe for this shinigami to be squad 12 affiliated? Sadly not, it’s very likely to be Stealth or Omnitsukido. A shame really as I need to make some headway into locating a means to get to them and start destroying their laboratories. Hmmm. . . It’ll have to wait I guess given I’ve a new task. First things first though, I need to go to Kitai and get my rebars reformed. I thought it’d be cool to have them be molten puddles I can throw but honestly. . . That might not have been the best move. . . Ah well I’ve got time to get them fixed AND even improved! Wait. . . Is his shop open in the middle of the night? Fuck. Ok I’ll have to wait for the morning then. What to do in the meantime then?” Hoshi looked around his room and began to think about what exactly he needed for this mission.
First and foremost was his rebars. Those were strictly necessary as he needed to be certain that he had weapons that could keep up with his enemy. He also needed to look into more details regarding this shinigami. He assumed that with his new rank he could get some specific access to data and maybe a picture of who he was looking for, otherwise he’d have an entire fiasco he’d have to deal with. And then what else would be necessary? His mind worked diligently as he tried to think over what else he could possibly need but it seemed like as long as he knew who he was going after, where they’d been seen, and had his weapons at the ready, he really didn’t need much else at his disposal. With this train of thought in mind Hoshi figured that there wasn’t really much of anywhere else to go BUT the Data Center. Truly, if he wanted information that was the place to be and it was only going to help pass the time until he got to a “reasonable” working hour so that he could head over to the Kitai shop. Thus he started his trek down the various corridors and pathways to the Data Center. The new headquarters that was built was something nice, not that the previous wasn’t nice but it was nice in a different way. Where the old was made of marble and other nice stones with glass all around and a spacious feel, the new was metallic. Minimal in its design, function over form, and oddly enough very quiet. Sans the soft sound of the lights buzzing it was very easy to hear only your own footsteps or those of another from a short distance away.
Thankfully Hoshi wasn’t exactly a slow walker so the trip down to the Data Center was relatively quick. He had the letter about his mission in his kimono’s inner pocket. Sadly, just because Hoshi was fast doesn’t mean he didn’t get lost a few times. He'd inevitably found the Report and Filing office first. Then found the Spa room, which while nice, wasn’t his goal. And then finally found the only immediately open corridor as well as a light that wasn’t soft white. As he made his way in, he smiled to himself and just took a long look around. He had to admit, he was pretty impressed all things considered. Several stories, many more bookshelves, and a plethora of places to sit down and go over whatever one’s heart desired. He made a mental note to look into this place when next he had some free time. Another couple moments went past, and he found the help desk near the entrance just a little ways in. A small female, black hair, tan skin, and a lax business suit was currently staring soullessly into the computer screen before her. Once she heard him though the customer service face came out and he saw some semblance of light in her eyes. You know, I pray this will never happen to me. I may not have a soul but the lack thereof with this person is just unnerving.
Hoshi took a breath and smiled at the woman before speaking. “Evenin dear, I’m a bit new to this place so do you mind helping me out? I’ve got a mission I need to look into some files for and I’m not certain how to do that with the new setup.” The woman in question nodded as she listened to Hoshi. Almost immediately speaking once he was done talking. “Understandable sir, so since the new construction of the Data Center we’ve taken a few liberties in design and placement. Namely this space, the Common Access area is open to all in Xcution. Typically, those of Lances and below will find what they are looking for here. The information available is wide and varied so you’ll have to be a bit more specific about what you’re looking for. In your case I’d start with one of our many computers. So long as you have your Xcution card you can get on with ease. Then open up the search engine and you should be able to look for whatever you need. Most information you could want is on the computer but there are many books or other literature that may not be held within the system for one reason or another. So, for any information that isn’t in the system it’ll tell you what floor, aisle number, shelf in said aisle, and then the number associated with the document. It may take a second to get the hang of it but after a couple tries, you’ll get used to it. Is there anything else I can help with?”
Hoshi shook his head and gave her a quick thanks before walking off towards the nearby stairway. He was certain other computers were likely hidden somewhere but since he saw a series of computers on the floor below, he figured he’d save time and just go onto them since they were so readily available. Taking two steps at a time he made good time arriving at the floor below and took up the closest computer to him. A reach into his kimonos sleeve and he pulled out his personal card and put it into the computer. It took a few moments to warm up, log him in, and then open up the programs necessary to work but since time wasn’t super of the essence, he decided to simply let the machine take its time. Once it was ready however he opened up the search engine only to realize he had a notification already which was strange. I don’t recall the system having an email or some other notifier like this embedded. . . Huh. . Must be new. Still, this is nice as it’ll let me find what I’m looking for specifically. Hoshi just shrugged and clicked on it, being directly linked to a file that held all the information he could possibly need.
One look at the first picture available and Hoshi already knew it had to be the Onmitsukido that was involved. Fucking sneaky bastards. Squad 12 back in the day had held concerns that they were being infiltrated simply due to the fact there were some “unfortunate accidents” that weren’t due to mad science and stupid decision making. It wasn’t exactly a surprise then that they wanted information on Xcution as they likely found out about the base of operations being demolished. This no doubt meant that this individual wasn’t some low end or fresh whelp. They sent someone serious. Capable. Hoshi narrowed his eyes as he kept reading. So far, the information, while useful, wasn't terribly plentiful. Straight sword for a weapon. No known zanpakuto powers due to those typically seeing the individual dying or otherwise video feed devices being destroyed. They did stick to Kunai and Shuriken through and seemed to display some amount of martial prowess. Maybe Hakuda? Hoshi couldn’t be certain, but it seemed to be the most likely answer. C’mon nothing else? Obviously, he wasn’t going to walk up and give a name or his powers. But sincerely nothing else? Black clothing, straight sword, typical Onmitsukido information. This was the best they got? Fuck. Let’s see where this individual was spotted around.
Further inspection of the files in hand showed that the shinigami had been poking around the base at large. Mainly investigating the main entrance where all the paperwork and non-spiritually aware were involved. Though there were momentary signs of said individual around the various other entrances. It seems like only a few security guards were killed also, specifically the spiritually aware. Hoshi chuckled to himself as he knew the reason why. The non-spiritually aware wasn’t going to really be an issue for them. Yet these didn’t seem to be attacks gunning at invading . . . yet. This seemed like a poke. A bait if you will. Why though? I mean sure it's dangerous to just walk into our new base but . . . wouldn’t that be the point? . . . Unless they thought we were already weak? Perhaps thinning the numbers until Xcution had to have only non-spiritually aware guards? It’s possible but that seems a bit too long game. . . So then what would they want?
Hoshi sat around for a bit longer, reviewing the available information another couple times in the hope that something would click. Yet nothing did. He sighed to himself as he could feel his mind overworking itself. He was willing and ready to determine the secrets of the universe if it meant beating this individual’s mind games. . . Yet Hoshi wasn’t all that smart in this regard. Stealth was the coward's route. And even if he was in an assassination organization, he wasn’t necessarily the type to follow this idea of “staying quiet”. Mind you he COULDN’T but even still. This kinda game was part of the reason he hated shinigami. It made Hoshi wonder just how deep the Onmitsukido went into their fucked-up games. Were illusions involved? Did they use poisons? Sleight of Hand tricks? What was their release. . . if they even had one. And what rank were they? He sighed loudly, or at least it felt like it given he was alone at the moment. “Ughhh this is too much for me. I understand why I got this but fuck me, I just want to kill this dude.” Hoshi glanced over at the computer and saw the time. It was now two A.M. With a rub of his face, he knew there was only one other way he could possibly do at this moment and that was check if the Kitai shop was open. It was a long shot, but he wasn’t going to sit around bored as hell here until he felt certain the other was open. With a few buttons clicks he logged off, waved to the woman behind the desk and made his way over towards the Kitai Shop. Hoping against all odds it had night hours.
