How exactly does the academy work?

I'm a new player and I'm still working on my character, so I read the introduction and most of the getting started threads. Now I have to decide between becoming an unseated officer,  or an academy student. I would really like to start with the academy, but it's unclear to me what kind of advantages it gives, and (despite the threads) how you progress through it. If someone could explain this, I'd be very grateful.

We currently do not have an existing academy system in place. We've tried in the past but it never seems to last (hehe that rhymed). Most players usually just write their character's academy experience in the history section and begin RPing with an unseated officer.

Just as Himitsu said, it's no longer an active part of the forum. The Academy used to, essentially, be an Adventure thread that was designed to get the characters participating to around Class 4. However, being in that thread also locked you out of getting above Class 4 until the thread ended.

Thanks, I've been wondering for a while why the academy seemed so inactive but this explains a lot.
