Kisala walked out of the Seretei gates and started to make her way through the Rukongai. Kisala had been ordered to protect a woman that wanted to go through the wilds or something. She didn't get the details since she was eager to accept the mission and ran out before she got the full details. Might not have been the brightest thing for her to do, but one could not over look her enthusiasm. When she hit the gates she slowed down to a clam walk remembering that she had to represent not only the Shinigami, but also house Shihoin.
She looked around at all the people that she passed on the streets. It seemed that there was a crowd to see her. She guessed that not many people outside the inner districts got to see a Shinigami that often much less a daughter of a noble house. She just smiled a bit awkwardly and waved as a few people greeted her. She politely made her way through the crowds thinking that this was why she did what she did. To protect the innocent souls and try to make their afterlives safer.
She finally made her way to the edge of the Rukongai, and saw the woman that she was charged with protecting. She wore all brown and had a bunch of flowers in her hands. She must be visiting someone important to her if she was going out to the wilds. Kisala walked up to the woman bowing once she reached her. "I am Kisala Shihoin from Squad 2 of the Gotei 13. I have been asighned to protect you. She straightened with a cheerful smile on her face.
Kisala's short, off white hair blew in the gentle breeze that kissed her tanned skin, and ruffled her robes. Her Zanpakuto hung securely to her waist gently hitting her leg. Kisala's long scar that went across her nose contrasted her darker toned skin, but that didn't bother her any. Kisala's orange eyes were focused on the woman she was talking to while she used her periferal vision to scan for any dangers, and the other's that she was told were coming.

Walking past the large Seireitei gates, Corvus yawned and patted his messy hair down with his hands. He had been taking a small nap when he got orders that he was to take on this mission. Since he was green, he needed some experience and apparently they thought this would help him get said experience. It pissed him off because it made him feel like he was weak, insignificant, someone who couldn't do much....and it pissed him off even more because it was true. He WAS green, he had no real field experience. So he should just bite his tongue and take his punches, no matter how demeaning it was.
As he walked past the gate and into Rukongai, he watched as the hustle and bustle seemed to sort of slow down as he passed by. Many people stopped what they were doing and stared, which made him feel a little uncomfortable. He wasn't used to being the center of attention, but it sort of felt good in a way. These people looked up to people like him, the ones who protected them from the horrible hollows that attack others outside the Seireitei. Every single resident of Rukongai had owed their life here to a Shinigami who saved them. Shinigami must seem like heroes to them, huh? Pushing those thoughts aside, he took a moment to remember what his mission was for today.
It was a little hazy since he was half-asleep from waking up, but he remembered the most important parts. Some old widow wanted to go visit her husband's shrine and it was his, along with two other participants, to help protect her on her travels. It seemed simple enough, especially with three escorts. What could go wrong? When he came up on the edge of the district, he saw the old woman covered in brown. All her clothes, from head to toe, were brown. In her hands was what seemed to be a bouquet of beautiful flowers. Some of them were ones that Corvus had liked quite a lot, and it brought a slight smile to his face. Coming closer, he saw another Shinigami appear next to her. A dark skinned girl, with unnaturally white hair. She was quite a sight, and he had to take a second to stop staring at her as he came up on the two of them.
When he got a good look at the old woman, she seemed to resemble the woman who had raised him and he felt a slight tug on his chest. He straightened, and bowed to the elderly woman. "Nice to meet you Ma'am. My name is Corvus Daemon, Shinigami from Squad 2 of the Gotei 13. It's a pleasure to meet you. I'll be one of the Shinigami escorting you to your husbands shrine, so you can rest assured that I'll protect you from any dangers along the way." He smiled at her, and stood up again but less formal as he relaxed. Turning to the female Shinigami next to her, he nodded in greeting. He didn't feel the need to speak to her at the moment. They would have time later to do introductions once all three escorts have assembled.

The trees were beautiful this time of year, flowers blossoming in the highest branches of the trees. A curious blue jay fluttered close to the ground, searching for a dropped nut. The wind was clear and crisp and the sky was blue with not a cloud in the sky. The townsfolk were out and about, but that was the only flaw in an otherwise perfect day. And yet still Katrina worried. Despite the beauty of her surroundings and the warmth of the forest, she nonetheless felt a chill crawl up her spine.
Contrary to all appearances, Katrina is not a child to be kept in the dark. She knew something was wrong. Very wrong. What kind of mission was it that required not one, not two, but three members of Squad 2, a division known solely for practicing stealth and espionage? "And more importantly, what kind of mission leaves a civilian to guide us? There is something odd here ..." Her suspicious mind couldn't put it entirely at ease, and with a sigh that she couldn't entirely suppress, she once again looked down at the target.
The old lady she had long ago deemed not a threat, but the two new arrivals were something else, though she recognized both. The first, pale hair, dark skin, was unmistakably Kisala Shihoin, unseated officer of Squad 2 and member of the Shihoin family. The second man interested her more; dark and handsome, she couldn't help but feel like he would be of great help here. Though truthfully, she didn't know. Both were wholly unremarkable members of her squad and she had never taken the time to get to know then nor their capabilities.
Which was more the pity, come to think of it.
The barest of rustling would be the only sound any of them would get before Katrina dropped from the tree, landing with hardly a crouch and not a sound. Intense blue eyes stared from over a black scarf and skintight leather, concealing her form. Matching gloves left her fingers and biceps bare, but concealed the rest. Padded leggings covered her feet with flexible shoes, and a knee-length skirt provided a modicum of decency. It was cinched at the waist by a utility belt, upon which hung two swords, a bright splash of gold on black.
The entire outfit was against regulation, not even remotely similar to the Shinigami one. But the reason for this misconduct would come a second after she landed. "If I were an enemy, you'd be dead. Always check your surroundings." She was not staring at the old lady, however, but at the two members of her squad who had, so far, disappointed her. If they didn't recognize the cold, clipped tones of Katrina, they would most definitely recognize the golden phoenix emblazoned on the breast of the outfit.
Only after she was certain that her subordinates were well aware of their mistake did she turn her attention to the old lady. "I'm Katrina. Katrina Kawada, if you must know. Head of the Kawada and Fifth Seat of Squad 2. You are in good hands, I assure you." She gave no curtsy or other sign of deference save for an incline of her head. She was equal to, and most likely superior to, this woman in any way. It was beneath her to bend knee to a peasant.
"I'll stay in the shadows, shall I?" She tugged the scarf back over her face, once again concealing plush lips. Whether from some effect of the armour, or prodigious skill in stealth, as soon as she stepped into the shadows of the tree she seemed to disappear, flitting up the tree as easily as a squirrel. Her disembodied voice came from the treetops then, cool and professional. "Corvus. Kisala. Flank her. And keep your guard up. There are more than hollow that lurk in this forest."

While all of the shinigami arrived the old woman stayed still looking over the beauty of the trees and the flowers of the area. It was one of the few places on the edge of any Rukongai district that was beautiful and not swept away with aggression and hardship. The first to make an appearance was a tan skinned girl with snow white hair that presented herself as a very nice young woman. "My my I see that the most beautiful are still the most dangerous." The woman smiled gently and bowed to the girl who she could tell was more of a tomboy then a princess even if she had the title. The biggest impression that this girl left on the woman was her unique beauty.
Right away after she had stood strait again the old woman saw the somewhat young looking boy walking over towards the both of them. He wore the same black uniform as this girl Kisala so it was obvious that he was also one of the three shinigami that had been assigned to protect her on the journey. When he introduced himself she could tell that it was somewhat hard for him to see her. Her assumed that he had been raised by his grandmother and at some point she had passed which had left him feeling alone. "Your hair is quite lovely for a boy please do take good care of such a gift from your family." She bowed to him just as she had to Kisala and smiled at how nice he was to her.
She was going to speak and then out of nowhere the final shinigami who appeared to be an even younger female that was definitely small in stature dropped from a tree somewhere and appeared right in front of her. The old woman stood quietly as Katrina lectured both Kisala and Corvus. When she introduced herself as a head of a noble family the old woman smiled gently and nodded her head a few times. "Well now your an adorable one." She bowed to Katrina and then when the young head leaped away and spoke of Kisala and Corvus doing pretty much the same thing she got the notion that she was free to start the journey.
So the old woman began to walk from Rukongai out into the wilds of Soul Society. It would be a few minutes of walking at a rather slow pace until they actually reached a noticeably different area. She kept walking, but now she was walking through a thick forest that had high trees with branches all over the place. The three shinigami would hopefully not like this area and ask the woman to take a different route to the shrine. Who knew if they kept going at this pace in this type of area the possibility of being attacked might actually be more then twice as likely.

Kisala blushed slightly at the old woman's compliments. It was always odd to her when someone complimented her looks. Most women would be flattered or just happy for the compliment, but it just felt odd to Kisala. She was a tomboy at heart and would much rather be complimented on her abilities than anything else. She noticed the second member of the team. He bowed to the old woman like he did, and simply nodded in greeting to Kisala, who nodded back .
Kisala whipped around when she heard something fall to the ground behind them, to see the fifth seat of squad two. "If I were an enemy, you'd be dead. Always check your surroundings." Kisala bowed her head slightly in embarrassment. "Of course fifth seat, I will be more careful." The mission hasn't even begun and she already is being shown as incompetent. She quickly shook it off however and concentrated back to what was going on around her.
The fifth seat decided to return to the shadows ordering her and the male Shinigami to flank the old woman. Kisala took her position to the right of the woman as they started off. It was slow going for a while. She didn't expect that the old woman would be fast on her feet of course. Kisala kept alert trying to not let herself down again, or her superior. She always wanted to show herself at nothing but her best, and already failed at that.
The road was pretty smooth sailing for a while. They were coming up to a particularly thick patch of forest that Kisala didn't like. She may not have ventured out into the wilds at all, but she knew that those kinds of places would be perfect for things to ambush them. Kisala watched the old woman to see if she would move around it on her own, but she seemed to be content with going through. Kisala put a hand gently on the old woman's shoulder to stop her for a moment.
"Excuse me, but I don't like the looks of this area. We should go around it." She said motioning the direction with a nod of her head. She was rather soft spoken about it. She couldn't see the fifth seat around, and wasn't sure what she thought, but she would speak her mind none the less. She had no doubt that they would be able to protect their charge in there, but fighting while guarding someone was always more difficult than just focusing on the fight by itself.

He smiled at the old woman from her compliment. It was soon gone though as another Shinigami appeared. She introduced herself at Katrina Kawada, as well as the fifth seat of Corvus' own squad. Despite his respect for her rank, not so much her noble birth, her comments pissed him off a bit. "We're only on the outskirts of Rukongai, we shouldn't have to be as alert. We haven't even fully left the district yet." As soon as he spoke, though, she was gone in an instant. However, she was still nearby because she had ordered both him and the other Shinigami, who he now knew as Kisala, to flank the old woman. He swallowed his own anger and followed her orders. He had to prove himself a good subordinate if he wanted to get farther in the squad. Pressing back his own personality, he followed the elderly woman as she began to walk into the woods.
The woods were quite lush, each tree covered with green leaves. Despite the picture-like scenery, Corvus was keeping alert for any notice of an attack. The road was quite easy for a while, simply staying straight. However, once they began to approach a much more dense area, Kisala had stopped the old woman. As he was about to ask why, she answered his own question. Even if it was said softly, he could still make it out. She seemed to have reservations about moving forward, and suggested they find another way. While it may take more time, he agreed. "She's right. That area could be dangerous, and we wouldn't want you to be put in any unnecessary danger. So let's find another way around, alright?" He gave the woman a smile. Not only would finding another way be much safer, it would also mean that the chance they would need to take action and fight would be greatly reduced. Protecting her and dispatching any enemies would be a difficult task. Best to avoid any conflict if possible.
A spark of anger flared in her gut at the old ladies 'compliment', though Katrina certainly didn't view it as such. It was quickly stifled, however, as she turned her attention to the mission at hand. 'It would not do, she decided, 'Just because I'm insulted at what an old hag said. I'm probably older than her and yet she calls me 'cute.' Tch.' She indulged, for just a brief second, in some more colorful oaths, but soon she was all business. She didn't color her thoughts with pettiness; that could wait until they break for camp.
She was satisfied to see that both of her underlings followed her orders, though Corvus a little grudgingly. This amused her, to a degree. After this mission, perhaps she'd teach him why is ranked higher than him. For now, though .... Quick feet and hands took her to the wide, strong branches of the trees. From this position, she could see everything. As she ran, leaping from branch to branch as gracefully as a bird through the air, she let her senses expand, let the small, instinctual part of her mind take over. She withdrew within herself, at peace, watching over everything. She saw the movement of the people below her, the dust particles floating in the air, and the tight, tunnel like pass suddenly looming out of the forest.
The dread broke her meditation as easily as a pane of glass. She dropped from the treetops, hand raised in the air. The universal sign for 'Stop'. Her entire body was still, vibrating, like a cat before the pounce. She swept all her senses out - sight, sound, that elusive sixth sense that allowed one to see and perceive magic - trained, intently, on the path before her. Something about it, about the tightness of the trees and overall doom it seemed to leak, screamed a trap, and from Katrina's personal experience, it would be perfect. But still ...
"It's the fastest way through the forest." Her voice, too feminine for the iciness that crept through it, spoke just after Corvus finished his plea. "And if there's a trap, they'll attack us anyway. Besides, any moron would change paths. That is what they expect. And why would we ever do as the enemy expects?" She glanced over her shoulder at them, her gaze one of intensity. "But best not to do so lightly. Shihoin. Come here."
The command was sudden and sharp, and Katrina expected it to be followed. "You'll take point. Keep all senses trained, are we clear? You're the first line. See what must be seen." Two quick steps brought her close to Corvus, and she said in a low voice, so that the others could not hear, "Stay by the old woman's side. Talk with her, entertain her ... And keep an eye on her. Not all is right with this forest, and I mistrust mysterious old ladies whom visit graves this deep in the wilderness." She expected her orders to be followed, no question, as she once again faded off into the background, her skin form disappearing among the trees.

Well it seemed that the majority of the group was against going through the pathway of the forest yet the one who could claim to be in charge was ordering them to continue onward. She had stated some pretty good reasons why if it was a trap it wouldn't matter if they went another way. The old woman was standing still holding her flowers with a smile on her face as she watched the tiny child move around shouting orders at the others who appeared to be older then her. So when she said to continue walking the woman began to walk deeper into the woods on the same path that they had been walking around.
The woods got thicker and less vision was available regarding the surrounds past the trees on each side of the path along with the bushes and foliage. It was a few more minutes of traveling slowly when all of them would hear the sound of something like a bird cooing. It was high pitched and carried through the path. If they looked up they would see a big red and gold feathered bird flying in the air. Yet the bird had human looking legs and arms with angel like wings what in the world was it and why was it flying down towards them.
The bird creature flew down towards the pathway and then angled his body upwards and flapped his wings keeping him about ten feet above the tops of the trees. His wings flapped over and over again then he cooed down at the group and then fell to the ground of the pathway about twenty feet away from the ground. What the group probably wasn't paying attention to though was that the ground behind them was sinking and a small vibration was coursing through the ground. As the last coo was made the ground broke behind the ground about five feet away and a large mole looking beast jumped from the ground and at the male Shinigami ready to bite the right side of his shoulder.

Kisala was about to lead the old woman around the forest when Katrina stopped their detour. Kisala looked up at her in confusion. Wasn't the safety of the old woman their top priority? Kisala understood that going through the forest would be the quickest if nothing hinders their path, and more than likely if anything was laying a trap they would pursue, but still it was rather reckless to have them fight in a more confined space.
"It's the fastest way through the forest, and if there's a trap, they'll attack us anyway. Besides, any moron would change paths. That is what they expect. And why would we ever do as the enemy expects?" It did make sense to a degree, but it still took a level of recklessness to go along with such an assumption and head into danger. Kisala was not in a position to argue anyway. So it looks like they were heading through it. "Shihoin. Come here."
The command snapped Kisala out of her thoughts and she immediately went to join her superior. "You'll take point. Keep all senses trained, are we clear? You're the first line. See what must be seen." Kisala nodded and rushed ahead of the group. She stayed about ten feet ahead of them that way she can encounter what ever was ahead and give them proper warning while at the same time, she can double back and aid the group fairly swiftly.
The cooing of a bird drew Kisala's attention to the sky. A large bird like creature with arms and legs a human soared above them. The red and gold feathers on its body almost made it seem like it was on fire. It hovered in front of Kisala about ten feet from her. It touched down yet continued to coo. Kisala had no idea what it was up to, but she had a bad feeling about this. She heard some commotion behind her and knew that it was a trap.
Kisala face the bird creature and drew her sword. It was a shorter weapon compared to most with the blade being about a foot shorter than most sealed Zanpakuto. It was light weight and easy to use with one hand without sacrificing power and speed. Kisala narrowed her eyes and darted in several steps before using Shunpo to get close to it and slashing horizontally at the bird's chest. The slash would go from left to right allowing Kisala to fallow up with a diagonal slash going the opposite direction quickly.

Just as it seemed they were going to change course, Katrina had halted them. As he listened, he couldn't poke any holes in her theory....but it didn't sit right with him. 'Why would you do what the enemy wants you to do? Wouldn't it be better to go the OPPOSITE way from their traps.?'As he thought to himself, he grudgingly accepted her strange thoughts and stood beside the old woman once more. He talked to her about the forest and it's beauty. The green leaves rustling slightly in the wind gave the forest a calming feel to it. He also spoke about himself and his experiences in the Shinigami Academy. The talk seemed to boost Corvus' mood a bit. It might be due to the fact the old woman looks similar to his old caretaker, but he was glad for it. It made him more at ease and relaxed.
After a bit more of walking along the more confined path, he heard a sound coming from the air. He stopped in his tracks and looked up. What could it be? Suddenly, Kisala jumped into the air, Zanpakuto at the ready, and clashed with a Bird Beast Clan. The sudden attack shocked Corvus for a moment. It seemed stupid for a single Beast Clan to attack a group of Shinigami. Nonetheless, he grabbed the hilt of his Zanpakuto firmly and pulled it from its sheathe. The long, silver blade glimmered in the sunlight that peeked through the treetops. He was going to assist Kisala, when suddenly he heard yet another sound from behind him.
A quick glance behind him would reveal a Mole Beast Clan lunging straight at Corvus. Almost upon instinct, he gathered reiatsu at the soles of his feet. He grabbed the old woman before he used Shunpo to dash away from the attacker. He had just barely made it, any slower and his shoulder would have been punctured by the Beast Clan's sharp teeth. 'Damn! I knew we shouldn't have come this way. It's all that damn Kawada's fault!'Corvus placed the woman on the ground, taking a small second to make sure she was okay. Once she was securely on the ground, he took hold of his Zanpakuto once more. He charged at the Beast Clan that had attacked him, lunging the tip of his blade out at its stomach. He would follow the stab with a diagonal slash that would go from its right side up to it's left shoulder.
