A Mark on a Demon

[Kimiko Shihoin]

Kimiko was quite surprised to hear this individual tell her that she was wrong about him being a demon. She had been told specifically that an individual that possessed the same features as him was in Karakura Town and was in fact a demon. Kimiko did hesitate for an instant thinking over whether of not she actually was attacking the correct target yet there were two things that struck her as support for her orders to be correct. She looked over the right arm of the man making note of each sections of the chain. She had been told that the demon would definitely have some kind of chain somewhere on their body. That was proof in itself that this man was the demon she had been sent here to remove.

The man was shouting that the Soul Society was wrong and just killed what they thought to be threats. Kimiko hadn’t been a Shinigami long enough to know if what this man was saying had any type of truth to it at all yet the emotion that seemed to be seeping out from his words was enough to clarify for Kimiko that he believed it. On top of that she had learned that this man was the son of what she had only been taught a small amount about called a mod soul. Kimiko had never met a mod soul and knew nearly nothing about the powers that they could possibly have yet something that she didn’t think was possible was that he got the chain from a mod soul mother.

Throughout everything that the man said he had never once mentioned anything about having a father which made Kimiko question if this man actually had no clue that he might be a demon. If that was the case then Kimiko wouldn’t be able to bring herself to kill him just for being something different that he didn’t even realize. There had to be something that she could say to get the information she would need to come to an understanding of what actions she would need to undertake now. “I’m not the Soul Society itself I’m just a Shinigami sent on a mission. I was informed that there was a demon in this town that shares your appearance. I was told it would have a chain somewhere on its body and that it would have some kind of power that related to Hell. You say your mother was a Mod Soul and I’m sorry for having to ask this, but do you know anything about your father?”

For the first time since the fight began, he looked away from her. He looked down to the ground and let his body relax. His fists were still clenched, but he wasn't thinking about fighting. He knew nothing about his father. It has always been just him and his mother since the beginning. As far as he was concerned, his father was a dead beat that didn't even deserve to be thought about. His mom never mentioned him though that would explain the arm.

He shook his head looking back at the Shinigami. "I never knew anything about my father. I never wanted to know, so I didn't ask. Why, you think that he may have been a demon?" He asked more sarcastically than out of genuine interest. Maybe this was all just a ploy to get him to lower his guard. This was getting more frustrating than not knowing why she was attacking him. Now he wasn't even sure what he was anymore.

Kimiko listened to the man as he explained that he knew nothing about his father. It seemed that this man hadn't learned or been told anything about his father by his mother and never wanted to find out for some reason. It seemed that his question was more just a statement that the idea of his father actually being a demon was nothing, but lies and impossible. That though was false. Kimiko recalled never knowing anything about the Soul Society or the human world until she had actually started her training to become a Shinigami. It was possible that this man just didn't know he was part demon.

Kimiko had a hard time thinking about how she would deal with this situation now though. Based on what she just found out she didn't feel right even fighting him due to his lack o knowledge on his own bloodline. Who was she to pass judgment upon someone for simply being what they were. The princess of the Shihoin family couldn't think of anyway that Soul Society would have justice in itself to pass such judgment upon anything. She was a Shinigami though and one that had an important mission to do yet something did pop into her head.

Taking out a scroll from her black stealth clothing Kimiko writes down at a rather swift pace and then in the next moment sends a hellfire butterfly that quickly disappears. "Trust me that I'm not someone that kills without reason. Give me a few minutes at most to see if there is anything else that can be done." Kimiko had wrote down the new information about this man and sent the hellfire butterfly to Soul Society where the higher ranking member of squad two would review it then send back a message clarifying what Kimiko's orders would be to do about him.

He still didn't trust her, but she seemed to be willing to at least postpone their fight. He sat down on the ground wrapping his chain back around his arm. He kept his eye on her anyway. He had a habit of always expecting the worst from people, and always staying ready to fight. Because of this, most people see him as nothing but a delinquent, or just an angry psycho. They didn't understand. They did not go through what he had. He closed his eyes and tried to relax a little. He needed to take this time to catch his breath and think about how he was going to deal with her if she was told to continue with her assassination orders.

He could try running. He dismissed that idea right off the bat. Running was never a good solution. Yes it was good to run from a fight that you cannot win and live to fight another day, but if they found him once, they could certainly find him again, and the next time they might send more than one person to kill him. If that happened he would be in even more trouble. He had enough difficulty fighting her by herself. He didn't want to push his luck and fight two shinigami at the same time.

He wondered why she didn't draw her sword during the fight even when he started using his chain. Did she even use one? If she did, what kind of transformation did it use? He remembered his fight with Hotaru and how her sword changed into that cannon thing. He opened his eyes again and looked at the woman in front of him. "Hey, what is your name?" He asked in genuine curiosity.

Well it seemed that the butterfly hadn’t arrived back from Soul Society with her new orders or further information just yet. That meant that she had been forced to await its arrival. Even though her initial orders had been to simply eliminate this demon Kimiko with the new information felt like it’d be impossible too without proof of him being a threat. The idea of killing someone without justified reason was unacceptable to the princess something that her training would have smothered to the point of allowing such a thing. Luckily for this demon his own skills had kept him alive and provided Kimiko with the competition to break her trained mind.

The man it seemed didn’t trust Kimiko which she could tell because honestly he wasn’t relaxing all that much and barely looked away from her. All of that though she couldn’t help, but feel was justified simply because of the assignment she had been sent out to fulfill against him. When he did sit down Kimiko waiting until he began to rearrange the chain on his arm into the same pattern it had been when they had started to fight. As he did that Kimiko sat down herself with her legs crossed and elbows on her thighs. The best thing she could perhaps do at this point was clear her mind and think about what she could do.

After about a minute or so of just sitting Kimiko heard the voice of this man once again yet he was asking a question. It seemed that the demon was interested in what her name was. Kimiko honestly couldn’t think of why a demon would want the knowledge of a name yet she didn’t really know anything about demons which seemed to be the big problem right now. She thought it’d be to rude to tell him that she wasn’t going to grant him such knowledge especially when he was in fact being reasonable. “My name is Kimiko. My I know your name?” Kimiko smiled kindly to the man sitting a few feet away.

"My name is Jak, Jak Halcom." He only thought that it was fitting that he give her his name since she gave him hers. It seemed that she was intent on waiting for a response from whoever she was attempting to communicate with. She sat down soon after he did, and was looking rather relaxed. He could take this opportunity to take her out now, and be done with her, but that didn't seem right now. She seemed to be questioning herself now. Was it something that he said that changed her mind? He didn't know nor care, if he managed to leave with his head attached he would be thankful.

"Can you tell me this Soul Society, and maybe more about your unit? I see your an assassin, so you might know something about what I want to know." He leaned forward hoping that she would be kind enough to oblige him. It wasn't like they had anything else to do at the moment. He was thinking that maybe the ones that killed his mother were part of her squad, and she may have heard something about it two years ago. At the very least, they should know if any soul reapers were ordered to kill anyone from the world of the living or not.

Kimiko was happy to see that at least this individual held enough respect to share his own name after asking hers. He had such a human name yet it didn’t seem like one that would be immersed from the culture of Japan. Although Kimiko wasn’t entirely sure if she was correct to assume such a thing because she had only been taught the basics of the human world and the many governments that currently stood. Kimiko didn’t truly know and didn’t have the desire to learn all she wanted to do was obtain her potential and become the Head of her family.

It was then that Jak asked her if she would tell him more about Soul Society. She wasn’t entirely sure what he wanted to know about it though he never asked specifics other than her own unit. Kimiko thought it might be unwise to inform Jak about the second division even if he was being respectful to her. Although she remembered him screaming previously about how his mother had been killed by Soul Society. Kimiko simply frowned and looked at the grass in front of her as Jak finished asking his question.

“I’m sorry Jak, but I’m actually new to my division and don’t have any information you would want on your mother if that’s what your asking about.” Kimiko couldn’t help, but feel sadden by her response yet it was the truth. Kimiko had only just been assigned to the second division after becoming a Shinigami and was still new to everything that she was required to do as one. In the next moment though the hellfire butterfly seemed to just emerge from nothing and land on her hand. After reading over the message that had been sent to her Kimiko grinned and stood up once again.

It was then that Kimiko began to walk over toward Jak at an average pace grinning at him on her way over. “Well Jak it seems that for the time being your not going to be considered a major threat to the people that live in this town. However, I am forced to inform you that if anything horrible happens in this town you will be considered a suspect.” Kimiko extended her right hand outward to Jak in what few would be able to see as the symbol she meant one of a strong individual showing another respect. “I’ve got to go, but if we cross paths again I’d like to fight once more.” Kimiko began to walk away as a spirit doorway appeared in front of her. As she began to walk inside she held up her right hand and spoke “Just next time give me a challenge demon-boy!” and just like that the doors shut ending the confrontation between them.

Jak could not hide his disappointment at hearing that she was new to the division and didn't know anything about his mother. He sighed knowing at least he tried something. It couldn't be helped, he thought to himself. He had made acquaintance with two shinigami already, so that at least got his foot in the door for some information if any came up. He had to be content with that and keep an ear to the ground when he met any more shinigami.

The butterfly she sent returned and landed on her hand. She must have gotten the response she was hoping for. She smiled and walked closer to him. He got up tensing reflexively, but quickly relaxed realizing that it was not a threatening pace. He was glad to hear that he was no longer on a hit list, but wouldn't argue the fact the fact that he may be more powerful than he knew, and therefore more threatening to them. 

"You better bring more yourself. You only landed one blow on me." He said to her back as she told him to get stronger for the next time they met. He smiled and chuckled to himself. He had a habit of meeting some interesting people. He thought that he would hate all shinigami, yet time and again he was proven wrong. Maybe not all shinigami were all murderous thugs like he thought. He defiantly had a lot to think about. Once the gate closed behind Kimiko he turned and returned home to rest.
