RP Sample (Optional): The tension in the air was palpable as Kei squared off against his opponent, eyes narrowed in concentration. His breath came slowly and steadily, matching the rhythmic clatter movements across the arena. He focused intently on the battlefield before him, hands poised and ready to strike. The dim light cast long shadows, which added to the intensity of the moment. With a swift, calculated move, Kei picked up a his next weapon, his face betraying no emotion, watching to see his opponent's next move.
Kei's hand hovered momentarily forward, the choices flickering through his mind with the speed of a practiced warrior. He was aware of every subtle shift in his opponent's posture, every flicker of the eyes. With a decisive snap, he tossed his weapon to the ground, its clack seeming to echo throughout the room. Kei's mind was a battlefield, and every opponent a soldier strategically placed for the final assault.
As the battle progressed, the tension only grew. Kei could feel the weight of every movement, every choice, like the clash of steel on steel itself. The room was silent save for the soft, methodical clicks one after another. Kei's expression remained stoic, his mind calculating the next move with intense precision. He saw his opponent's strategy unfolding, their moves a delicate dance of offense and defense. A slight smile tugged at the corner of his mouth as he reached once more, the endgame in sight.
With a final, decisive move, Kei placed his winning tile on the table. "Ron!", he declared, his voice breaking the silence. And with that the tiles fell forward revealing Kei's winning hand. The tension instantly lifted and Kei's smile returned once more to his face. It was such an intense game until that moment that Kei knelt back and let out a soft sigh. After a moment, Kei lifted his cup and took a long sip of tea before he looked down and chuckled. "Thank you little

-Appearance-
Height/Weight: 5'11" / 172lb
Physical Description: Taller than the average Japanese man, Kei stands just shy of six feet. He appears frail, with a thin frame and little muscle. His skin is pale, and his silver hair, kept at shoulder length and brushed back, occasionally has strands that curl toward his face. Kei has the appearance of a man in his mid-forties. He bears no obvious marks or scars, though his face shows the first signs of aging with subtle wrinkles. He often carries himself with dignity and grace, and his eyes are frequently closed or nearly closed.
Kei wears the traditional shihakusho of a Shinigami, adorned with a white shitagi under his black kosode and hakama, kept closed by a white hakama-himo. He wears white tabi and brown waraji on his feet. On his left side hangs a black sheath for his zanpakuto, which appears to be slightly longer than the average blade. Kei has one strand of hair tied to the side of his head which is bound by a long black strand of silk adorned with a simple wooden bead hanging on the end.

-Personality-
Dislikes:
Sweet foods - Little to say, he will eat slightly sweet foods with a smile but anything more will generally result in displeasure.
Overconfidence - While being confident in oneself is important, overconfidence leads to one's downfall.
Stragglers - "The nail that sticks out will be hammered". A not to uncommon phrase to hear from Kei, who believes the laws of the Seireitei must be obeyed and respected.
Accepting Failure - If someone fails and just accepts that it's impossible to succeed they have lost their way. Kei believes that failure is an opportunity to learn and set goals from.
Laziness - Daily work must be completed, daily training is vital, and reading is the tool that trains the mind. Anything less is wasted opportunity in the eyes of Kei.
Disrespecting Superiors - People hold positions of authority because they deserve them and the respect they carry. If they don't, they lose them. That is how Kei views the hierarchy of the Seireitei.
Violence - Kei is not the first to draw his blade. Generally he would prefer things be solved peacefully. When Kei draws his blade he has accepted that this is the best or only option.
Likes:
Traditional Japanese Food - Be it tempura, sushi, yakitori, udon, or many other traditional Japanese foods, Kei is likely able to prepare them with skill and care as they are by far his favorite foods.
Coordination - When members of differing divisions work well together, Kei is pleased. Additionally, those who work well together within the same division show signs of strength to Kei.
Zanjutsu - Kei goes out of his way to practice his skills with his zanpakuto. While not a prodigy by any means, training with his blade is less of a drill and more of a leisure for Kei.
Spiders - There is a certain connection Kei has with spiders. He admires their intelligence and grace.
Mahjong - Kei is an avid riichi mahjong player. When there is a dispute that needs a clear victor, a game of mahjong might help decide one.
Feminine Women - When a woman is truly feminine, Kei finds it an attractive quality. Being able to navigate socially and physically while maintaining such traits is a respected trait for Kei, especially in combat.
The Rain - The smell of fresh rain and grass, the feeling of cold beads of water falling from above, the sound of millions of drops falling to the ground and even the occasional lightning strike will generally be a perfect place to find Kei.
Flaws:
Obedient to a Fault - Kei follows the rules and the orders of his superiors. Even if such orders would put him at risk or have him attacking a friend, Kei follows orders.
Slow to Fight - While Kei is competent and comfortable fighting, he prefers not to if a fight can be avoided. This leaves him open to being surprised by a sudden attack.
Frail - Kei is not as strong as most of his peers. His skill comes from dedicated training more than physical prowess. This leaves him less likely to overpower opponents in a test of strength.
Blind in One Eye - While not immediately obvious by looking at him, Kei's left eye is blind. While it still appears normal, his lack of sight makes him bad at judging depth and leaves him with a bigger blind spot on his left side.
Habits:
Apologizing - Kei is quick to apologize for smaller transgressions that don't warrant it. When someone bumps into him for instance, he'll likely be the first to apologize even if it wasn't his fault.
Daydreaming - When Kei has a moment of peace he will often retreat into his own mind. When there is nothing to do, painting the images he conjures in his head suffices.
Twirling His Pen - When holding a pen or similar such object, he will nervously twirl it between his fingers, especially when he is uncomfortable. A dead giveaway when he isn't saying what's on his mind.
Drinking Tea - Weirdly, Kei carries a small flask with him at all times. While some might assume him to be alcoholic, he is just addicted to drinking tea.
Fears:
Being Asked to Harm Friends - While Kei is obedient to a fault that does not mean he enjoys being instructed to act against friends. When a friend or ally does something against the law of the Seireitei, Kei fears being asked to help in addressing it.
Bad Leadership - When Kei begins to question if the leadership above him is faulty he becomes deathly afraid of the implication. Everyone is fallible, but a bad actor in a leadership position can lead to terrifying results.
Ephebiphobia - With no true explanation, Kei finds himself uncomfortable dealing with or interacting with adolescent people. It is likely he will always keep his distance from them if given the choice.
Goals:
Short Term Goal - Kei seeks to commune with his zanpakuto, to learn more about it and the spirit it represents. Having read all about shikai and the ability to directly speak with his inner spirit, Kei meditates daily to try to find the answers.
Medium Term Goal - One day, Kei would like to become a seated officer of the seventh division. He studies the law of the Seireitei aggressively, learning everything he can about it's intricacies.
Long Term Goal - If given time and opportunity, Kei would like to one day become the 7th division captain. This goal is not one he takes lightly, knowing it is not a guarantee or even likely, he still holds it as possible and strives toward it whenever possible.
End Goal - Kei would one day like to retire from the life of an active shinigami and become a member of the Central 46. When combat is no longer possible or other similar circumstances present themselves, Kei would like to step down and work a more bureaucratic job.
Alignment: Kei is hard to pin down to a single alignment given his true nature. So below are two of the most likely ways one might find him as;
Lawful Good - On a day to day basis, Kei follows the rule of law above all else, but adopts the least harmful methods of doing this. If asked to apprehend someone, Kei would likely try to talk the person into giving up willingly before anything else.
Lawful Neutral - When releasing his shikai, Kei no longer cares about peace. Violence was chosen, and now he must act with abandon for wellbeing. When this occurs, Kei has lost any semblance of peace, and becomes a cold and calculating creature more than the warm and friendly person.
Overall Personality: Kei speaks with a deeper tone, slightly gravely and often quiet. He is calm and respectful, often described as friendly. While Kei is often formal with most people, he tends toward a warmer person to talk with. Whether it be training, eating, drinking, or playing mahjong, Kei shows respect and kindness whenever possible. Kei is the type to enjoy a good joke, but is formal enough to cover his mouth when laughing. Normally Kei isn't shy to share his thoughts, though he tries to say them in the least hostile way possible.
When speaking with anyone who would be considered a subordinate or civilian, Kei does not talk down to anyone. He is quick to brush away compliments or kind words said about him, deftly avoiding anything that would build an unnecessary ego. He is kind to those beneath him or the plusses that call Rukongai home. If a human were to ever interact with him, Kei would likely downplay himself as being a spirit to avoid seeming stronger or better than anyone.
Addressing a superior, Kei is very formal and direct. Holding no real secrets or regrets in passing information as it is necessary to do so. Kei is hesitant to consider a superior a friend until it is made very clear to him to do so, and will generally use honorifics even if told it isn't necessary. This can even lead him to using overly formal honorifics in some situations. When those who outrank him are speaking in his presence, Kei will often show extra care when speaking up, apologizing for interjecting and bowing to show respect as he does so.
A stark difference in personality comes when Kei releases his shikai. While normally he is reserved and friendly, he becomes cold and almost cruel when he must use this power. Kei no longer speaks in a friendly tone, nor does he utilize honorifics as much in this state. The mentality is, if he must go that far then he will not hold back any longer. Calculating eyes pierce any who oppose him while his zanpakuto is released, like a lion hunting it's prey. Kei does not hold back once he has reached this point, and strikes only true.

-Powers-
Fighting Style: Kei's fighting style strongly depends on whether or not he has released his shikai. Before releasing, he is reserved and neutral in his expression and movements. Generally speaking, Kei holds back and prevents unnecessary violence as much as possible. While his strikes are lethal, he is incapable of going all out in this form. He relies on his kido most of the time to avoid using his zanpakuto. Kei utilizes hohou for defense when possible, preferring to keep distance if able. When releasing his shikai, Kei becomes much more ready to strike. Finally utilizing the full force of his abilities, Kei turns into a much more dangerous foe. This is because he cannot pull his punches after releasing the spiritual pressure of shikai or bankai. His speed, strength, and aggression all fiercely spike, showing his true fighting spirit.
If Kei is able to, he will fight without his zanpakuto at all. However when Kei is forced to use his zanpakuto to defend himself he will do so defensively while continuing to use kido unless he is required to release his shikai. Generally Kei will focus on sealing and locking down his opponent more than damaging them, resorting to damage only when unable to truly seal his opponent. Kei will utilize his zanpakuto offensively to those who press too much to safely use kido, though this is his least favored method of striking and is generally only used in a pinch.
Ultimately Kei's most aggressive style of fighting occurs during his bankai. When in bankai Kei becomes even less reserved and becomes almost sadistic in nature. His mindset in this form is that his opponent has pushed him too far to be defensive. Korinra begins striking out much more aggressively with all that he has. Kei does not reserve himself any longer and works toward total destruction of his enemy. No longer does he show any pity. If an opponent were to beg for mercy, Kei would consider killing them as an act of mercy.
Zanpakutou Spirit Appearance: Kanmusen (悲鎖, from 悲しみ kanashimi, or sorrow, and 鎖 kusari meaning chains The name means Sorrowed Chains). While at first glance, Kanmusen takes on the form of a middle aged woman wearing the shihakusho of a shinigami. Normally she appears to be a shinigami, though her wrists have shackles with chains dragging along the ground. Additionally, she wears no shoes and has faintly growing red eyes. When angered, the chains on her wrists lift and snake around her aggressively.
Inner World(Optional): The inner world of Kei is a cold, ever expanding, snowy field littered with dead trees as far as the eye can see. From the branches long chains and spider webs hang lifelessly. The air is stale, no wind blows ever in the inner world which leaves a scent of death lingering. The inner world has no ending, and while snow never falls it always remains as a layer on the floor. Kanmusen is often hidden from sight, descending from the sky on a web of chains attached to her wrist chains.
Zanpakutou Appearances: Besides the charm on the sheath and the loop on the pommel, Kei's zanpakuto is unremarkable in its sealed form. The standard black with white diamond pattern on the cord wrap of the handle does have one unique feature: the circular guard, which houses steel shaped like chains circling like a web carved into the steel around the guard. While the average zanpakuto is about four feet long, Kei's is slightly longer at about four and a half feet, with the standard silver shine to the steel blade. Hanging from the cord at the base of the sheath is a small charm made from a mahjong piece sporting the red kanji 中 (Chun, Red Dragon) and a metal loop acts as the pommel.
Shikai Overall Ability: When releasing shikai, Kei places a finger in the pommel loop of the sword and recites, Latch on, Kanmusen (Haritsukero, Kanmusen! 張り付けろ、悲鎖!). He pulls the loop like a rip cord drawing a long metal chain, utilizing the loop as a weight hanging from the blade. The chain is about 20 feet long and can be thrown, twirled, or slashed with to attack at a significant range, disarm, or bind opponents with. The blade is otherwise unchanged and can be thrown, twirled, or used as normal. The chain can be broken with a direct attack.
Bankai Overall Ability: Speaking the phrase, Forest of Sorrow (Awarena Mori 哀れな森), Kei yanks the chain from the sword and the sword itself (if it is still attached) and the chain links scatter in a circle with a roughly 200 foot radius. The links suddenly sprout chains downward that reach to the ground and imbed like roots while many chains grow straight up like pillars. These tree-like bundles of chains spread chains out to form a huge dome (or egg shape if in the air) which obscures all vision into or out of the arena. Those trapped inside will quickly find a thick web of chains forming in all directions that hinder fast movement heavily (step techniques do not function for opponents and they may only utilize their base speed after type). Kei is able to move freely through the chains as they move and shift to make room for him. While in this form Kei is able to sweep his arms to strike with chains like twenty foot long whips.
Zanpakuto Techniques:
Shikai
Fatal Links (Chimeiteki na tsunagari 致命的な繋がり) - From chimeiteki na (致命的な) meaning fatal and tsunagari (繋がり) meaning links), this ability which can be used in shikai or bankai and allows for all the chain links from a single chain to break away from one another and fall to the ground. These links can be controlled to fly around and strike like miniature blades (for 25 reiatsu per post) or reconnect to reform the chain (costing 50 reiatsu). When disconnected the links serve no defensive ability, nor can they wrap, bind, or disarm due to their size.
Bankai
Dreaded Hooks (Osore rareta fukku 畏れられたフック) - From Osore rareta (畏れられた) meaning dreaded and Fukku (フック) which is katakana for hook. This ability causes two chains to extend from the ground toward a target trying to hook into the flesh of their limbs or body. Each chain pulls down with great weight (costs 25 reiatsu for the pair) acts only offensively to strike the opponent and hook into them. Once hooked, tremendous pain wracks the victim while it remains attached. This pain causes the victim great difficulty moving, adding for each hook pulling down (Each hook adds a minimum +150 strength to move. IE 2 chains requires 300 strength to move). Removing a chain can be done through ripping it out, but that requires a Strength stat that is twice Kei's RS. Alternatively, carefully removing the chains requires a Strength stat that is 50% of Kei's RS and takes two posts to complete. They can only perform this removal when being still or defending, but cannot attack while doing so. Any victim who's incapable of moving due to this effects is pulled down to their knees until their strength again exceeds the chains' pull.

Birthplace: Kyoto, Japan
Current Residence: Seireitei
Memorable Figures:
Kusanagi Jiro - Kei's father
Haruo - The monk that looked after Kei
History: Born into a traditional family in the historic city of Kyoto, Japan, Kei's early years were steeped in the Japanese culture. Raised with a deep appreciation for martial arts and spiritual practices, he often accompanied his father, a Shinto priest, to ancient shrines nestled in the city's serene gardens. It was here, amidst whispered prayers and the lingering scent of incense, that Kei first sensed the subtle currents of spiritual energy that permeated the world around him. While incapable of sensing spirits, he could sense there was an active spiritual world beyond what he could see.
During his youngest years, Kei's mother, Ai, split up with his father, Jiro. Ai left to live with her sister, which left Kei to be raised by his father alone. Jiro decided not to try to remarry, maintaining his small country home with his son. As Kei grew, he learned to farm and work the soil. Though Kei did not show interest in this lifestyle, he often spoke positively about his father and showed great respect for the hard work his father did. In exchange for Kei's hard work, his father would save up money to begin purchasing him books that he could get his hands on for Kei as he showed an interest in studying and learning.
From a young age, Kei displayed a keen intellect and a thirst for knowledge that surpassed his peers. His fascination with folklore and mythology led him to devour ancient tales of samurai valor and yokai legends with great curiosity. By his teenage years, Kei had already begun to explore the hidden corners of Kyoto, seeking out forgotten temples and shrines rumored to be haunted by spirits. While incapable of finding spirits, Kei did often find spiders, which he slowly became fascinated with.
His academic pursuits eventually led him to seek out books and information not readily available in his small village, where he immersed himself in the study of cultural anthropology and history. Kei remained drawn to the mystical aspects of Japan's past, often spending weekends cataloging artifacts and deciphering cryptic inscriptions in dusty archives. During one such expedition Kei got an infection in his left eye which slowly took his sight on that side.
It was an expedition into the mountains of northern Kyoto that Kei's life changed forever. Venturing alone into a secluded valley, he stumbled upon an injured traveler, cloaked in the tattered robes of a wandering monk. Despite the stranger's enigmatic silence, Kei felt compelled to offer aid. The man was a Shinto monk named Haruo who took Kei in and taught him the ways of Shintoism. Kei took to meditation and the peaceful life of a remote monk for some time.
At the age of 32, Kei went out to find fruit and herbs for Haruo, but misfortune was quick to follow. While wandering about the mountainside, Kei took a step on a loose rock and went over the side, falling to his death. Finding himself as a spirit chained to his own lifeless body, Kei would begin to meditate. He was unsure if he was truly dead or not but assumed the meditation would answer his question. Silently during his meditation a shinigami came and performed konso sending him to Soul Society without a word.
Waking in Soul Society, Kei found himself in a lower tier area where he built a small shrine. He was later discovered by shinigami and after discussing joining the Seireitei, he agreed to apply. Years passed in a blur of combat drills, spiritual meditation, and lessons in wielding a zanpakuto. Kei's dedication and innate talent earned him recognition among his peers, yet his greatest challenge lay ahead. Kei would have to get accepted into one of the divisions.
As Kei progressed through the ranks of the academy, he faced many challenges and honed his abilities in kido. One of the only students in his class to obtain his zanpakuto, Kei would begin meditation often with the blade across his lap in an attempt to commune with his inner spirit. This proved fruitless, but it never slowed him from trying. Kei trained harder than ever in this time, believing that he had to earn the respect of his inner spirit to learn it's name. Now, in his final year of academy, Kei received word that he'd been accepted into his first pick, the seventh division. While he remains a student for now, he knows where he would report upon graduation.
