As the last rays of sunlight disappeared behind the horizon, Benjiro found himself gasping for breath, his chest heaving with the exertion of the day's activities. Despite the fatigue that weighed heavily on his body, he couldn't help but feel a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. He had spent the day fulfilling his duties as a Shinigami, defending and guiding the lost souls scattered across the World of the Living and upholding the balance of the natural cycle of life and death. He reached up to wipe the sweat from his brow and adjusted the green haori that he wore over his traditional Shinigami robes, tightening it to keep himself warm as the evening breeze began to pick up. He couldn't help but feel content with the day's work he had accomplished, and he thought that he had done enough for the night, ready to head back to the Soul Society and the 10th's barracks.
Benjiro truly felt like he was truly coming into his own as a Shinigami, taking on a variety of duties above and beyond what was assigned to him by his Squad. At this point, he had gone with Tala from Squad 3 to patrol the Northern Rukongai and assist where he was needed, trained with Gestalt of Squad 4 in the 10th's training grounds, and patrolled in Karakura, meeting with Miss Furinji. He wondered if Captain Celes would appreciate his overt productivity and his commitment to his duty despite his experience and skill, or rather his lack thereof. Still, he figured that she would considering that she herself liked to keep busy, he was just replicating his Captain's example.
He was just about ready to head back when he noticed a strange looking child kneeling by what he learned was a lamppost. That seemed unusual to say the least, so Benjiro decided to do one last check. Rushing forward down the dimly-lit street, Benjiro focused on his weak energy sensing ability since his physical senses were compromised at night. Thankfully, at least for now, no threats seemed to appear on his radar, giving him a sense of security, false or otherwise. As he approached, he noticed the child did in fact have a soul chain, but it was nearing the end of his rope. It made sense considering the young child had been crying profusely.
The gentle giant bent down and placed his hand on the child's head. "Are you alright, little one? Lost?" With a soft smile, he attempted to calm the sorrowful child. "M-mommy... She can't see me sniff" Immediately, his heart sank in his chest. He glanced around and saw a nearby home, with a sobbing mother sitting by the windowsill. It was truly heartbreaking how families could be stricken with such tragedy, especially to lose one as young as he was. Benjiro wrapped his large hands around the child's, closing his eyes to speak as calmly as possible."Hmm. I'm sorry, little one, it seems as if you're mother isn't ready to be by your side yet... and it seems like you need to move on now..." Immediately the child recoiled, screaming out. "No! I don't wanna leave my mommy! NO! NO!" He yelled out, angry, confused, and frustrated. Benjiro just took in a deep breath before calmly retorting. "Breathe, child. Things will be better on the other side, and I promise that I will reunite you with your mother, when the time is right. I swear to you in the name of the Buddha of Compassion. Namo Amitabha, Namo Amitabha, Namo Amitabha. Guide this soul through the realms of Samsara, lead them to the path of enlightenment. Namo Amitabha, Namo Amitabha, Namo Amitabha." He spoke, his prayer confusing and comforting the child at the same time, just enough for him to stop his tears. With that, Benjiro lifted his Asauchi and gently tapped the butt of the hilt against the forehead of the little one, performing the ritual of Konso.
Once the child was sent to the Soul Society, Benjiro closed his eyes and clasped his hands together in prayer. "Namo Amitabha, may this child find peace and happiness in his journey through Samsara. May he be protected by the compassionate Buddha and be reunited with his loved ones, especially his mother, in the next life. Namo Amitabha" Throughout this whole prayer, Benjiro was in the traditional lotus sit under the light of the lamppost, exposing himself to any Spiritual Beings that happened to be looking in his direction...
