The Forest was as hectic and barbaric as always. The sound of Hollow cries echoed through the expansive wasteland as thousands upon thousands of beasts of every size, class, and distinction waged war with one another to survive and grow, to evolve and prosper. Once a person started to amass strength, it was only up from there! Unfortunately, for those new to that lifestyle, things weren't easy by any stretch of the imagination. Just about everything could kill you, bar a few exceptions. The only benefit to it was being so weak that a lot of beasts wouldn't even consider you worth their time. That was the boat the lone Melvin sat in right now, alone, still having little power over his own spiritual energy
The purple-skinned humanoid creature did have a few things going for him though. After consuming his first meal, he could feel his body changing a little. The muscle in his arms had expanded, getting on par with the strength he had as a man before his death. It still had a long way to go, but at least on his level he could start delivering one hell of a hit to anything that crossed him. Another interesting thing he'd developed quickly was a form of spacial awareness of everything around him. It was like a sixth sense had started to open and he could pick up on just how strong most creatures were before he even walked up to them,. It'd be a useful asset for sure!
That sense came in handy when he picked up on something interesting. Not too far off a large number of olesser Hollows had gathered into a mindless brawl, the weaker of their kind devouring one another for the hope of becoming something stronger= a beast that could actually inhabit this savage place without much issue. It might just be his opportunity to knock a few heads in and kick-start this whole evolution thing for himself! It'd be a bit dangerous, but he was smarter than your average cannibalistic abomination?...Or was he?....Maybe just average, all things considered. He still had a sense of consciousness, but was definitely lacking in other areas.
Anyway! Melvin made his way to the area he'd sensed, feeling the pressure of dozens of Hollows. It was hard to estimate all of their strengths from afar, especially individually Little by little it started to fall into place though. As he got closer, the sounds of conflict started to overtake the background noise of the forest. The cries of dozens of beasts, large bodies crashing into the ground, cracking tree branches and all sorts of other little things peppered his ears. There was definitely a brawl going on down there! He neared the top of a small mountain surrounded by silver trees, getting a good view of the chaos below!
There had to be at least three dozen of the things! Everything form humanoid beasts like himself, though most a good bit bigger, to those little ankle-biters that were always such a nuisance! He could even make out a few spiders, furry quadruped beasts, and a few other flavors of monstrosity! The Forest sure was a magical place. Getting a feel for the mass of energy signatures, he could make out that the majority were pretty weak, either around his level or slightly above it. Not a single Menos in sight! Though it'd be pretty easy for one to crash the party with this many small fries around, but that is why it was so important for him to get the jump on things now!
Without a second though, Melvin jumped from the top of the mountain and dived toward the first creature in his sights! An eight-foot tall spider with blade-like legs. It was staying to the edge of the conflict and in a prime position for the madman to enter the fray! He landed right on their back, the impact startling the beast and forcing it to cry out in surprise at being attacked from the rear! Just having the edge of the ring didn't completely stop them from being flanked! It was going to be a -much- easier kill than his first meal! The chaos and confusion worked to his advantage.
The Young Hollow slammed his fist hard into the spiderbeast's head! The impact was heavy, impressive for such a low caliber creature and more than ample enough to crack the monster's skull! Their sharp bladed leg lifted up, darting toward their attacker quickly. But Melvin didn't fully intend on dodging. He weaved to the other side of their body, the blade scraping his back and drawing blood, but far from a fatal wound! Keeping up his momentum, he slammed another fairly heavy fist right into their skull! It cracked their mask and severed the beast's consciousness, their body collapsing beneath him.
Not wanting to get caught up in the brawl before he could feed, Melvin quickly dragged the spider Hollow out of the mess, narrowly avoiding a shot of red energy that whizzed right past his head! "Jeez! The heck was that?" The bala soared through the forest, going a few dozen feet before it detonated against a tree, creating a small explosion at the point of impact and setting one of the silver trees ablaze. The flames lit up the darkened section of the forest, casting a dull light over the conflict. He made it to a small cleared and set the beast's body next to a tree, keeping an eye on the other Hollows that were at each other's throats. No way would he be able to feast and fight in that clusterfuck at the same time! It was just asking to get hit in the back.
Instead, Melvin rested against the silver tree, ripping off one of the spider's legs and bringing it to his maw. His carnivorous jaw opened wide and bit right into it, crushing through the meat and fur, chewing up bone and swallowing it down. It wasn't the best taste, but it''d do. He'd take it apart bit by bit, crushing the creature's flesh and bone between his teeth and getting his second taste of cannibalism. The spiritual power slowly flowed into his body, his muscles growing a little from the extra power and energy coursing through him. It was a successful start! But he couldn't be too long. Who knew how long the madness in front of him would last.
Biting through the creature's mask, Melvin finished them off. The spider started to break down, the last remnants of their body dissipating and breaking down into spirit particles. With that done, the purple-skinned Hollow stood back up, stretching his arms and legs and looking into the chaotic battle still going on not too far away. He needed an opportune time to dive in again, an opening to exploit so he wouldn't just become more fodder to the conflict. He may have been a brawler and an idiot, but from his years in boxing experience, he didn't want to rush into a fight he couldn't narrow down to just him and his prey.
