Late at night when the sun was no longer in the sky and the bright radiant light that shined down upon everything and gave everything sight had long since disappeared from the wilderness. Rafael the massive pitch black panther Beast normally was the one in his small group of friends to hunt while the sun slumbered and the other two slept in safety from the dangerous of all else in the wilderness. While he knew that he had to hunt for something to eat for the both of them in the morning at the moment that wasn't what was on his mind.
Rafael had been living in the wilderness since he had started this second life which was somewhere around four weeks ago or maybe it was over a month ago. Over a month was probably the safer bet. In that time he had been through what could only be expressed as hardship. Having faced down against humans that on more than one occasion nearly killed him along with a few different other Beasts that either taught him a thing or two about his new powers or tried to kill him just like the humans.
Well humans were actually the right term for them. He had learned from the last foe he had faced off against that the humans he had been fighting against that possessed powers beyond what he had known humans were capable of doing were in fact something else. They were called Shinigami which although he didn't know what that really meant at least now he had a name for his enemy. These Shinigami were a constant pain oppressing him and the other Beasts for simply being what they happened to be. In his eyes Rafael couldn't and wouldn't stand for it and he wouldn't allow them to treat his friends that way.
That was the reason he was out here now in the wilderness away from his friends by little more than a quarter of a mile. He didn't put all that much distance between himself and them just in case something happened to them so that he could reach them in time to help them. They were positioned in a forest and Zadora and Lolth as far as he knew were both asleep and wouldn't be bothered by the training he was going to start tonight in order to become strong enough to protect himself and his friends and any other Beast oppressed by the Shinigami.
The only problem was that in truth Rafael wasn't all that sure what he'd be able to do compared with what he had already seen the Shinigami capable of doing against him. They were able to use spells like wizards that could be meant to trap him in place or attack him with elements. He had already suffered being struck by two different lightning bolts that had left scars on his body. They had been painful and yet for some reason while he felt like they'd be useful for him he didn't believe he could do such a thing.
Physical ability that was what Rafael had always been good at even while he had been human and now that he was a Beast he had been exceeding his former limitations one after another reaching new heights even in the face of death on more than one occasion in just the last month. He had to become stronger though and the only way he knew how was to keep learning and mastering his martial arts. However, he knew from his last battle where he had learned that the humans he had been fighting were actually something different called Shinigami that his martial art capability wasn't always going to be enough.
That was why he had to figure out what he could do in this new second life that he couldn't while he had been human. He knew that the Shinigami looked like humans, but simply by being different they were able to do so many different things. They could become even physically stronger than himself, create elements to use in battle and it seemed they could use the same technique that he had learned from the boar in order to accelerate themselves for a moment. Not to mention that his last opponent had stated the swords they carry possess some sort of power as well.
All of these powers were things that Rafael would have to figure out how to overcome, but to do that he had to figure out what he could do as a Beast. Instead of being discouraged at the goal in front of him he was actually quite confident and excited to figure it out. He had no doubt in his mind that Beasts had some sort of ability he hadn't yet figured out based on how many the Shinigami possessed. They both lived in the same place so the likely hood of Beasts possessing only a single ability unique to themselves wasn't something Rafael was going to accept.
So far everything that wasn't purely physical that Rafael experienced felt like he was using the energy within himself to cause it. He knew how to use it at will somewhat in order to use the acceleration technique, activating his newly acquired ability to apparently heal himself was a different matter, but he'd learn to use that at will as well. So tonight he was going to figure out other ways of using this energy in order to give himself more options in battle. There was one thing he knew he had to try first.
He was a very large individual now much bigger than he had been while he had been human not only in his height and size, but his sheer muscle mass. Everything that while he had been human would have been visible to everyone though was hidden beneath the thick pitch black fur that covered the majority of his body. This fur was what Rafael felt would be his first test. It covered basically everything which meant if he could figure out how to use it in battle that it would be the most flexible in terms of which area he could use it.
So it began. Focusing his reiatsu from what he believed to be his core to the fur on the back side of his right hand. It was pretty hard to see actually. He hadn't really thought about how the darkness was going to effect his training all he had planned on was using it so that he wouldn't get Zadora or Lolth involved in what might turn out to be a pointless time wasting potential sleep. He had to keep trying though so holding his hand closer to his face so that he could visible see the outline of his fur Rafael continued to flow his reiatsu into his fur.
After a few moments he could see the fur moving upwards slightly getting straighter and straighter and realizing that based on how much of his energy he was flowing into the fur and the intensity of how he felt was causing different reaction from his fur. Upon realization Rafael increased the amount of reiatsu that he was sending into his fur and dug into the drive he felt to get stronger. He heard what sounded like metal spring upwards as right in front of him the fur on the back side of his right hand was standing straight upwards like tiny spikes.
Rafael was actually a little shocked that his fur was able to pull off something like this, but wasn't totally convinced yet so walking a few paces forwards Rafael would brush the back side of his right hand where the spiked fur was located against the bark of a tree. He'd easily be able to hear the sound of the bark and his fur working against each other similar to the sound of a blade carving through the bark. It wasn't a sound that he was familiar with so afterward his paw pads would grace over the surface and feel that his fur had in fact just cut through the bark.
He had found it the weapon or at least one of them that he could use against the Shinigami that tried to force what they wished upon him and his friends. IT was still so hard to see though and Rafael knew this wasn't going to be enough. While this ability to make his fur hard and sharp would help him a lot it still would only be usable in physical exchanges which was something he could already do pretty well against the Shinigami so there had to be something else. One thing was clear though now that he knew his fur could be used. He had to start thinking more like a Beast.
That's when it clicked in his head though that there was another problem. He was actually dealing with it right now without viewing it as a problem until just now. If his friends and him were ever attacked in the dark by the Shinigami or another Beast such as the insects then they'd have a very hard time fighting them. Well Zadora and him would have a hard time Lolth would be completely fine. Rafael was confident in his new friends ability to fight, but didn't feel right about leaving her to deal with everything if that should ever happen so he had to figure out a way to see in the dark.
He knew that most animals didn't seem to be hampered down in their activates during the night which meant that as a Beast there should be some way he could do the same. Everything worked by using that energy inside of himself he had just proven that to himself when his fur had reacted and turned into small little spikes. So the most logical thing to do in order to see in the dark was to flow that energy into his eyes. So that's what he'd do as he looked out into the darkness.
30 Minutes Later
Starring tiredly into the darkness like he had been for the last half an hour or so was was starting to lose hope in that maybe he had jumped the gun and that this wasn't something that was possible for him as a Beast. Maybe he was just to human like to actually pull it off like a true animal. As less intense reiatsu was flowed into his eyes though suddenly everything became visible for a moment in a dark purple tint. Rafael was actually taken off guard stepping backwards for a moment in pure reaction mode.
Only after everything returned to pitch darkness did he realize that while he had just given up on his own plan did it actually become no longer a theory, but a fact. Flowing his energy back into his eyes, but pulling back the degree and intensity of the flow compared to what he had to do with his fur Rafael started to see the flickering purple tint. It took him roughly two minutes to figure out the appropriate flow in order to keep the tint in check that allowed him to see everything around him. A wide grin spread across his dark face as he had just proven himself right.
For the next hour or so Rafael continued to train realizing shortly after he had figured out how to see in the dark that the fur he made straight and strong enough to cut through the bark of a gtree could be fired off of him as a projectile similar to a bullet. For the next hour he had perhaps the hardest training that he had ever experienced since first learning martial arts. He had to constantly keep up the flow of his energy into his eyes while also flowing it into his fur.
It was rather tiring, but it allowed him to continue practicing while his friends slept and eventually his aim with his fur was good enough that he could hit a tree from about thirty feet away. This was an ability that would help him greatly against the Shinigami that relied on spells like the one that had fired lightning bolts through his shoulders. If he had this against her he believed he could have defeated her much easier and suffered much less pain and damage.
He was just about done with training when he realized that he had forgotten something. He had already seen another Beast use a technique that could help him perhaps. The lizard that had fought beside him against the first insect that had broken his arm and nearly killed him. Both times when Rafael had punched and kicked the insect his blows had done little to nothing as he hadn't been able to get through the thick exoskeleton he now knew they possessed. That lizard though had struck his hand through the exoskeleton using his claws.
It was another close combat ability and one that Rafael didn't believe he'd use normally as he had his martial arts and using his claws as weapons didn't seem all that powerful. However, he had seen it work with his own eyes and having it as an option should another of the insects attack again was better than wishing he had spent the time to figure it out now. So he stayed in the dark now looking down at his claws as he flowed his reiatsu into the index finger on his left hand.
It was still struggling to keep up his sight while flowing his reiatsu into the other sections of his body, but even if he wasn't he felt like he was getting at least slightly better at it. His claw didn't feel any different even as he changed the flow and focused on different emotions. He tried how he felt while he focused on his eyes and nothing different seemed to happen. After that it was how he turned his fur into needles, but yet that didn't work either so this was something different.
After a few more minutes an idea clicked in his head. If he was trying to make his claw sharper and harder than why not gather the same sensation or feeling that he got when commanding his muscles to flex. So as he flowed his reiatsu into his claw that's what he did and while there didn't seem to be any sort of change Rafael now dragged the claw against the bark of a tree and the bark itself seemed to be cut as if it were butter. Another wide grin spread across his face as Rafael found the trigger. He had learned much, but now it was time to get some sleep since there didn't seem to be any food in the area.
