The crackling of the fire, the sizzling of the venison, where the only sounds he heard as he rested in the clearing. His back against the large rock he decided to camp by, his single eye lazily watched as the freshly caught deers meat was cooked over the open fire. Deer was easy enough to cook, and was easy to carry with him when he needed to move. But right now, satisfying his hunger was his top priority. It had been a few hours since the sun rise, and he wanted to eat before he slept.
Reaching over and quickly snatching a piece of cooked meat from the flat stone he cooked it upon, and resting it on another, cleaned, stone to cool, he let out a sigh. Yet another night survived. This last one was rough. Dealing with Gillian's was never easy, especially now since the ones he was seeming to run into where capable of their own unique abilities again. He narrowed his eye, thankful he managed to get out of this one without any serious injuries.
Taking a bite out of his meal he savored the rich taste of game in his mouth. It was nice to eat something besides the crap he had taken from that camp site a few days ago. Bars of broken nuts held together with some sort of edible paste. Disgusting. But just because he was eating didn't mean he wasn't on guard. The sudden snap of a twig in the woods besides him prompted him to suddenly grab the hilt of his sword beside him. Turning his gaze in the direction, he was actually surprised to see two figures approaching him. Both clad in black robes.
The one on the left, a thin man with the narrow eyes of an oriental. The other had more meat on his bones, though shorter and with wider eyes, with snow colored hair. Garret recognized them for what they were instantly, the robes and eastern swords at their hips. Shinigami. But why where they here? "Whoa whoa! Sorry big guy, we didn't mean to disturb you're meal!" the oriental one said, raising his hands away from his waist and up to show Garret he wasn't holding anything. The white haired one looked between the two, before offering Garret a small bow. "We mean you no harm. Might you allow us to sit and rest for a bit by your fire?" he asked, Garret noting the politeness in his voice. The other had a bit more fire in his voice, like a jester might.
He shrugged, turning his gaze away from them and putting some more venison in his mouth. "Do what you wish." He replied with his ordinary, gruff self. The two Shinigami took their seats at the opposite end of the fires, placing their Zanpakuto on the earthen floor to better comfort themselves. "Appreciate it, boss." the oriental said, making himself especially comfortable.
"We're sorry to bother you. My name is Hisagi Izana. My partner here is Shinji Miyato." Hisagi introduced, his partner waving in response. Garret remained silent, chewing on his meal as he attempted to relax. "Would you mind if I asked you a question?" He asked, prompting Garret to give Hisagi his gaze. "The valley a few miles from here. It's filled with the corpses of Hollows, some of them even Gillian class. Was that you're doing?"
"So what if it was?" Garret asked. "It's impressive. Most of the time it's only us Shinigami that can take on that many Hollows all by ourselves. Gillian's? Man, you need to get a Vice Captain in on that to take those big guys down." Shinji said, getting a look from Hisagi. "At any rate, we're only here because of said Gillian's. The arrival of one of those in the World of the Living is often cause for concern, you know. Most Gillian's don't leave their own world, don't like the lack of reishi in the air." Hisagi chuckled slightly.
"So?"
"It's just that...was it really you who took down those three in the valley? I just...find it hard to believe is all. We were sent here due to the large number of Hollows detected here the night before. Imagine our surprise when we saw all those corpses." He continued. Garret stopped eating. "And if it was me?"
"Well then I'd say congratulations are in order! A standing applause perhaps! Hey! What do you say about coming with us, going back to the Seireitei and seeing if you can't join up with the Gotei! You'd fit right I-" Shinji was suddenly cut off with a "Not interested". The man blinked, somehow, with that open mouth of his not closing. "Hey...hey now don't be so hasty here." With that, Garret knew his relaxation was over.
With a sigh he got to his feet, pulling his great sword along up with him. He was preparing to leave, to resume his travels, his belly now full, and forget about these two chuckle heads when it happened. A noise beside Garret, the fluttering of cloth, along with the sound of dragging steel. Garret vanished just as the biting steel of the Zanpakuto swung through empty space. Appearing a short distance away, Garret raised his great sword up as he saw Shinji occupying the space that Garret had just been at.
Hisagi was on his feet now as well, his own Zanpakuto being drawn as they both dropped the sheaths to the ground. "Oof...he knows Shunpo, huh? This'll at least take a bit longer than we thought." Shinji complained, twirling his Zanpakuto around. "You talk too much, Shinji. It's why you don't move up in the seats." Hisagi responded, slowly moving to try and keep out of Garrets reach.
The swordsman looked at the two, a small smirk painting itself on his lips. "So...what's this about. Upset I took your kills or something?" He mocked, raising his great sword in it's standard position. Shinji chuckled before responding with "Something like that actually." before he decided to rush in. He was fast, Garret had to admit, the Shinigami keeping himself low and sword held to his side in preparation to swing. The oriental lashed out, his sword aiming to cut into Garrets thigh in order to cripple the large man.
Bending his legs to lower himself, the sound of colliding metal rang through the clearing as the two weapons collided. Hisagi moved as well, aiming to cut at the back of Garrets arm. The swordsman wouldn't be having that. Spinning and swinging, pushing Shinji back in response, Garret slammed his own weapon into Hisagis, tossing the smaller Shinigami back. "He's strong." He commented, followed by a "No shit!" from Shinji, who once again resumed his assault.
He was close to Garret, swinging with his much shorter sword in an attempt to get some sort of wound. The swordsman, whose sword was longer, was at a disadvantage with a foe so close to him. All he could do was raise, lower, and move the base of his weapon around to block the thinner katana. The sword pushed past Garrets own, poking past beside Garrets head. But, Shinji had allowed himself to get a bit to close with that lunge and was rewarded with a hard kick right in the leg. The Shinigami let out a surprised yell, falling to his knee as Garret retreated a bit.
Shinji was back on his feet, but not before Garret had begun to swing right at his head. "Bakudo #4: Hainawa!" Garret heard Hisagi shout, shortly before his sword stopped in its swing. Looking up, he saw the blade ensnared by some rope made of light. Kido?. Shinji used this opportunity to get to his feet, smiling and waving as he thanked Hisagi. "Idiot! Get him now!" he shouted, but was too late as Garret vanished with another Shunpo, followed by all the air being knocked out of Hisagis lungs by the collision.
Hisagi landed on the ground, followed by Garret rushing after him with that monster of a sword over his head, ready to come down and cleave the foolish Shinigami in two. "Hisagi!" Sinji shouted in panic. The white haired Shinigami raised his hand in panic, followed by shouting out "Seki!"
A small orange shield like construct of Reiatsu formed on his wrist, blocking the blow from Garrets weapon. Following the collision between the two, bolts of electricity danced their way up Garrets sword and into his body, catching the swordsman by surprise and forcing him to pull away. Shinji appeared alongside his ally, helping him up. Garret shook the pain off, raising his sword again as he prepared for their next attack. Why where they attacking him anyways?
"I think we're gonna need to pull out some of the higher levels of Kido for this guy. Shoulda known that weak shit wouldn't work." Garret raised his eyebrow. "Yes...I agree." Garret rested his sword on his shoulder, bouncing it slightly. Whatever they were mumbling about made him a bit anxious. "If you two are done screwing around, why not explaining to me why you're attacking me."
Shinji stood up and aimed his hand at Garret, a grin spreading across his features. "Hado #57: Daichi no Tenyou!" with that spoken, Garret felt the earth shake beneath his feet. Cracks formed along the surface, followed by stones being ripped from the very earth itself and held aloft. "Ye lord! Mask of flesh and bone..." Hisagi began to chant, but Garret decided it wasn't worth his time to worry about it.
The rocks then flew at Garret with some decent speed, but not enough for him to worry. With a deep breath, Garret began. His sword cleaved through the air in numerous directions, the sound of stone shattering followed after every swing. Garret held his ground, that massive weapon of his smashing every stone that Shinji threw. Bits cut his exposed skin a bit, but not enough to worry. Narrowing his eye, he began to dash forward, smashing through any stones that hindered his progress.
"..of your claws! Hado #33: Sokatsui!!" Hisagi shouted, followed by an explosion of blue fire being fired directly at Garret. Gritting his teeth, his anger forming into power, Garret shouted something as well. "Enough of this!!" Muscles bulged beneath the skin as he swung his weapon upwards, releasing a shockwave of his physical power that collided with the Kido, causing it to cave in and explode as Garrets attack nullified it.
Shinji and Hisagi, using the given opportunity, appeared at either side of Garret, Zanpakuto posed to thrust right into him. The swordsman eye widened, Reiatsu rushing into his legs before, literally, exploding off of the ground. Where he had been exploded, throwing back the two Shinigami and onto their backs. Positioning himself above them using airground, Garret let out a sigh. "Haha..well now...this was unexpected. Shunpo Eichi, huh? Not a lot in the Gotei have that one." Shinji commented, getting to his feet slowly. "Wasn't aware it had a name." Garret admitted, looking over at the other Shinigami as well. "So you came up with it without even knowing? That's a surprise." Shinji jumped up, joining him on the airground, followed by Hisagi.
"So you wanna stop pissing around and finally tell me what this is all about?" Garret asked, backing up so he had both the Shinigamis in his sight. "I don't see a problem with it now, what about you Hisagi?" the other shook his head. With a grin and laughter, Shinji seemed excited to be spilling the beans. "What you said earlier, about us being grumpy we didn't get to kill the Hollows? Well, you were right! The problem is that YOU are killing the Hollows, not us."
"So what? Mad someone else is doing your job?"
"Not that simple actually. Do you know what Hollows are?"
"Transformed souls of humans left behind to rot in this world."
The two Shinigami adopted faces of mild surprise. It seemed that nobody knew that Garret had been informed by Taiho Kasumi'Oji about what exactly Hollows were. The Rogue lifted his sword up, resting it against his shoulder to conserve his stamina. Learning the truth about Hollows, that they were in fact once human spirits, had caused Garret to form an initial confusion over them. Not simply that, though, fear had formed as well. Fear that the persons closest to him had become the same monsters he now fought.
