Manabu bowed. "I am honored by your presence, Lucious-taicho. We were just preparing to demonstrate alternative uses of sho. As for you, senpai, you will not need to use the kido yourself. We will spar, and I will employ sho in our fight."
Manabu moved the lectern aside, took a casual combat stance, and waited for Taien to come and do the same. He was clearly not looking for a very intense fight.

"Oya oya, right, Brock-Sensei!"
Taien said, getting ready for a fight. Taien took up a stance, left arm a little lower than the torso, right arm above the left. Taien took a step forwards and thrust his elbow out, then followed that up with a right straight, which, at that point, turned into a spin into another left elbow.

Kaen shrugged off the answer to his question. It had sated his curiousity anyways. He was about to volunteer for the Sho demonstration, to be of some use to the class, but the rather energetic kid beat him to it, moving up. At that instant Kaen felt an intense pressure and glanced over. He let out of a low whistle. "How interesting... didn't expect to see a Captain here...." He commented almost inaudibly. He regarded the man a moment or two longer, before returning his attention to Manabu and Taien.
Seems a sparring match was underway. Manabu's stance was very casual indeed, but Kaen noted Taien's to be almost amateurish, with a guard that seemed comically low. Well.... guess if he was expecting a groin attack it's not bad, but it's useless for anything else. Would take too long to reach a target with an attack too... Kaen was much better at analyzing hand to hand attacks, than kido ones, so his interest was perked again.
The kid shot out an elbow attack, combod with a straight to a spinning elbow. Not a bad combination, Kaen admitted to himself, if a bit flashy. Still, Kaen was watching as to how Manabu planned to use Sho to defend himself. If it were Kaen, assuming Kaen could have used kido, he would have perhaps launched the hado spell to either deflect the attacks, or perhaps target the leg to take Taien off balance, letting him follow up with whatever attack he wanted. But Manabu had discussed creativity in its use, so Kaen was most interested in what he planned to do.
Ne~! Why...Just why[/b] did she have to be here?! She ordered her third seat to go! Wasn't that enough for the captain!?! Noooooo..."Rin. You don't know any kido. Go to the lecture." Augh! How embarrassing! Now her third seat and everyone was going to make fun of her~. Good gracious...she wasn't going to be able to live this down. Even worse! ...Taicho pulled out his stuffed bunny. God...he knows she hates that thing. The shocking red font emphasizes just how much she hated it. Or rather, feared it. Rin ran, screaming half way through her journey to the lecture.
When she finally got there, she figured that she should keep a low profile. Wouldn't want to run into anyone she recognized. Why? Because the woman has so much damn pride that she just couldn't get over herself. Ego much? Well, the plan is to avoid anyone you know at all costs! Well, Rin...What happens if someone you know does find you? "Hmph. I'm great with hiding. As an empress it comes naturally! So that situation won't arise!"
Oh jeez. Cocky much? Someone should just bug the mock-empress to startle her or something. That would be funny. Rin could feel it. Someone strong was around. Could that be a captain? No. Not her taicho...but a different one. Perhaps he was curious. Rin didn't understand Kido or Bakudo in the slightest...nor had she really given it a try. She should probably try. That sort of thing is useful after all. Hiro had used Kurohitsugi on her and that was damn near devastating. She shivered at the thought of being trapped in that black box again. Rin pulled out her fan and fanned herself as she watched from the back. Oh, it was Manabu! He seemed to be in a middle of a demonstration. Was he going to use a kido in this fight? Ne~ How interesting. What next?[/size]

Manabu started by firing the sho at the elbow, which allowed him to move forward and grab it.
"This is the most basic use of sho in melee combat. Don't be confused, it's not the most basic use in combat. That would be shooting your opponent with it. I used the kido to stop my opponent's attack. I now have the upper hand. Again!"
Manabu stepped back and resumed his stance. He motioned for Taien to attack again, and he did. This time he deflected the elbow and dodged the right straight while placing his own elbow in Taien's chest. This pushed him back. "Sho." The kido thumped into Taien's face, tilting him backward now. This was followed by a stepping forward spin (just for show) side-kick into Taien's chin, which sent him flying backwards.
"Now that my opponent has lost his footing, I would be free to follow with a killing blow. Thank you very much for your cooperation, senpai. What is your name? He told him.
"Thank you once again, Taien-senpai. Please take your seat."

"Hahaha, oya oya, you are welcome, Brock-Sensei."
Taien said with a bright smile on his face. Using Kido seemed like fun! And, he had now seen Sho twice! He could probably replicate it without much effort at this point, but Reti-Sensei would probably be angry at him if he practiced with it. Therefore, Taien decided to go back into the usuall training routine and he created a small dot of Reitsu on the tip on his right index finger. Through constant training, he had almost caught up to Reti-Sensei in the size of the glow, though he had a suspicion that Reti-Sensei was holding back much of what he could do. Taien was content to listen to more stuff for a while before asking a few more questions later.
"Preserving the past, developing the future. That's what the Kidou Corps stands for." -Taien Hadohou
Kaen watched the defense employed against Taien's attacks with only moderate interest, as he hadn't done anything too amazing with the Sho. The practicality of it was undeniable, sure, but after that talk about creativity, Kaen had expected a little more.... then he noted someone out of the corner of his eye. Really, Rin's attempts to avoid being noticed MIGHT have worked..... had she not taken a seat directly in front of Kaen.
The third seat could tell Rin was trying to be unnoticed. Just a few subtle things in her body language that suggested she was embarassed to be there. Kaen quietly leaned forwards and whispered in Rin's ear. "You know, among all the qualities an empress like yourself may have, subtlety clearly isn't one of them." Kaen teased quietly, just to let Rin know he was fully aware that she was there with him, before continuing to watch the progression of the class.

Talking during Manabu's lecture!? How dare he! No, Manabu was far too humble to demand anything from anyone there. He did notice, however, that he was talking to Minamimoto-fukutaicho.
Could it be that Fukutaicho is interested in this topic? No. No, it couldn't. She did not choose to be here. Taicho must have sent her to learn. She must be horribly embarrassed, so I should not honor her. I'm sure she would rather nobody notice her...[/i]
"Dai-san-seki, would you please assist me with further demonstration? No offense to Taien-senpai, but I believe someone with your strength and skill will make things more... engaging. I would request that you take it easy on me though.
Yes, that should do it. Kaen was only bothering Rin because he was bored. Now everyone will be happy!
Rin looked on curiously at the demonstration. Well, well, well...It was helpful. Who knew? Maybe this kido thing was worth learning after all. She honestly didn't notice that she took the seat directly in front of a certain third seat. With legs crossed and arms folded across her chest, Rin was waiting for all the cool kido show up! Stuff like Kurohitsugi! ...So then she could get revenge on a certain vice captain. She wore a defiant look on her face before taking one last look on either side to see if there was anyone she recognized. Hm...Looks pretty safe so f--
"You know, among all the qualities an empress like yourself may have, subtlety clearly isn't one of them." If the mock-empress like Vice Captain wasn't against screaming loudly in public (mind you, this is if bunnies aren't involved.), she would. Rin literally jumped and let out small "eek" as she threw her fan high into the air. Oh hell...She was not expecting that one. Rin caught her fan and held it close to her chest. Orange eyes widened in fear. There was only one person that would probably enjoy teasing her. "K-K-K-K-K-Kaen-san..!" she managed to say his name as she slowly turned around. One might notice that she was clearly embarrassed about being found out seeing as her cheeks were red and her tone of voice.
She sheepishly grinned as she offered a small, weary wave hello. "H-H-Hello..." he voice trailed off. Good gracious...now she wasn't going to hear the end of it! Ugh.."Dai-san-seki, would you please assist me with further demonstration? No offense to Taien-senpai, but I believe someone with your strength and skill will make things more... engaging. I would request that you take it easy on me though. YES. Brock! You little life savior you! Rin looked at him and then back at Kaen with a sly grin and a raise of an eyebrow. "Sayonara~" she said in a sing-song voice, waving. She was holding back laughter. Pfft...He got called on.
Kaen had to admit. Rin's reaction to his little comment was worth FAR more than just being called on in class. He gave a broad grin to see the Vice Captain's reaction. However, he was deprived of replying to her greeting by Manabu who requested his assistance. Kaen didn't waste much time standing up, though didn't seem very bothered by it. Aiyaa.... doesn't this bring back memories... He muttered under his breath, though didn't seem especially unhappy.
And why should he? Kaen was used to this treatment. He'd been called out in class like this on an average of around 3 or 4 times a day when he had still been training at the academy. While Kenjutsu hadn't been too terrible, it had been most unpleasant in Hakuda class, as Kaen was hurled through the air, struck by powerful blows, and his limbs twisted into painful locks in order to demonstrate techniques to the class. And the instructors had probably taken a little too much enjoyment out of it. So Manabu calling him up really didn't bother him.
Kaen just smirked at Rin and sent a wink her way at her brief farewell to him, before taking a spot up in front of Brock. He gave a short bow and then replied. "Certainly. It would be an honor to help you, Manabu-sensei." He replied, and waited for instruction.

As Kaen walked up, Manabu went off to the side and retrieved two kendo blades. He gave one to Kaen and then took a stance a few feet away. He smiled.
"Please attack, but please, please try not to hurt me too much. I have to continue conducting this lecture after all."
Kaen gave his response and attacked. However, the entire point of this first demonstration was to put off that very first attack. Manabu blasted his dai-san-seki as soon as he moved a muscle, then quickly moved in with a slice to the torso. However, Kaen was incredibly faster and stronger than Manabu, and he was able to recover in plenty of time. The match was quickly lost.
"Well, the effect is lost when the match is so uneven, but you must admit that I would have not even had the chance to attack if not for my initial sho. Perhaps next you might fight me a little more lazily to increase the effect of the demonstration. On the other hand, I might be more inspired when completely outclassed... For now let's take it easy."
Manabu took his stance again, and Kaen took his. This time Manabu shot Kaen's kendo blade, which smacked him in the head. There was a bit of laughter.
"That is usually not terribly effective, but if an enemy has a weapon that is dangerous even to the touch, that could be the end of the fight. Thank you for your patience, Dai-san-seki. Let's go, remember, a little slowly this time."

Though Kaen hadn't used a shinai in some time, and kenjutsu had not been his first and foremost skills, he went about the drill Manabu had requested of him anyways. His first strike was completely deflected by the Sho-- as had been expected. Manabu's strike was fast, but Kaen had managed to twist his body and avoid it by a hair, making two swift counter strikes, catching Manabu's attacking arm, and then his chest in a reflexive counterattack.
Manabu asked Kaen for a second round though, with Kaen adopting a lesser fighting skill, for the purpose of demonstration, and Kaen felt a bit embarassed to be frank. While it was hardly his first time at the front of the class in this manner, it was indeed the first time he had been told to take it easy. Usually it had been Kaen wanting to say that to his opponent. Ah well. He obeyed Manabu's instruction, and relaxed a little more. But before he could even make a strike, he felt the Sho impact the high point of his blade, working leverage against him, and the shinai flicked backwards and smacked him in the forehead.
He would have been embarassed had he not already been anticipating something like this to have happened, though he did consider the interest of using Sho in such a manner. Perhaps he could improvise his shikai to perform a similar action in some manner... Manabu requested a final match, and Kaen obliged taking a slightly different Kendo stance than before. Instead of the standard one, with the blade held before the user, Kaen's blade was held in a lower position at his side, leaving his entire front open, though he angled his body as a martial artist might have, to limit the amount of body that could be attacked.
Right... keep it nice and easy...." Kaen thought to himself, watching Manabu's eyes. He held his position for exactly two seconds as though waiting, before stepping quickly forwards with the shortest possible attack, aimed at Manabu's leg, followed by a second strike that attacked Manabu's head with a vertical attack. This time, Kaen was truly making a note to hold back his strength, to enable Manabu to have proper reaction time, so he could make his demonstration.

Manabu blocked the leg attack and jumped back to avoid the head strike. He then moved forward to return the attack and was met with resistance. Manabu wasn't making any grand moves, and he hadn't used sho, but the two of them had been dancing for a couple of minutes now. Suddenly, Manabu shot out his hand with fingers pointed at Kaen's head.
"Sho." The kido didn't connect with Kaen's head. After all, he wasn't going to just sit there and let it hit him. Manabu was now swinging his blade again, but he was still pointing. "Sho." This one was aimed at his own shinai! His attack was now faster than he could have made it with his own strength. He forced Kaen back a bit - under a tree? He may not have noticed, but there had been rustling in the leaves from the first sho. Now a bunch of sticks came tumbling down. One after another hit him all over. They weren't very large or heavy, just a bit disorienting. Manabu was still pointing though...
"Sho. Sho. Sho."
Three sticks that were falling between the two of them were now launched at Kaen. Manabu lowered both of his hands now and addressed everyone.
"Thank you very much, Dai-san-seki. Remember, sho is most useful when you know about your surroundings and doubly so when you create them. I planted those sticks specifically to demonstrate this point. I think this has been a sufficient introducory demonstration, and I believe it concludes our business with this particular kido unless there are any more questions."

Rin's eyes followed the third-seat as he walked all the way to the front with amusement. Now that's a little embarrassing. Well, it was to her. She didn't want to be up there in front of a bunch of people. She also didn't like the idea of being a training dummy. If she was, she'd have no qualms about impaling their head with a fan...and then killing them for ruining it. Though, that didn't make much sense considering the fact that impaling their head would already kill them. So one should assume that she would carve and rip said victim's body to shreds. Rin had pride; an ego as big as a hot air balloon that was constantly being heated. Embarrassment wasn't her thing but it was always nice to see the empress flustered, no?
Rin watched the demonstration. Sho. Hm. This 'Sho'...she must learn it. Brock certainly knew what he was doing. She'd certainly give him credit for that. He'd make a good seated officer in the future. Of that she was certain. It would be then she saw the blade Kaen was using hit him on his forehead. At this, she'd giggle. Serves him right for startling her! It honestly was funny. Rin watched the demonstration carefully. She was dense when it came to this sort of thing so she had to seriously concentrate. Oh...so he used this 'Sho' kido to force him back to the tree. How useful~ She was looking on like a kid staring at candy in a candy store....What's the next kido!?
Kaen amused himself with their spar for a little but was getting curious when he intended to get to the point of the demonstration. Perhaps he was actually being entertained by their match? And then he launched the Sho, that Kaen managed to avoid. The second one, however, struck Kaen in the body, sending him into the tree. Impact damage? No, this was a setup for something bigger. Something landed on Kaen's shoulder. Sticks? This was his big plan? While the application certainly wasn't missed, this particular example.... Then he heard Manabu proclaim Sho more times, firing the sticks at Kaen, forcing the lieutenant to shield his face with his arms, the sticks cracking over it.
It seemed the demonstration was over though, Kaen bowed again, formally. "Arigato Manabu-sensei. It was my pleasure." He replied. To not be called up on a demonstration where I was to be smacked around, anyways... Kaen went and returned to his seat behind Rin. Her spirits appeared to have improved. Perhaps the show Kaen had put on had amused her? Ah well. If she was in a better mood, better for both of them. Kaen wouldn't knock her off a high like that so cruelly, would he? Well. Yes. He would have. Normally. But not at this particular juncture.
