Yet another morning in the Rukongai. Even in the early hours of the day the roads were bustling. One would be surprised at just how busy such a small village of one hundred spirits could be. Men and women bouncing between buildings, children laughing and playing in the road with balls, and a few small dogs yapping and running around. With the recent success in farming the spirits saw, a influx of coin and prosperity hit the village like a tidal wave. They grew simple things, like grain and rice, and did business with the Seireitei in exchange for gold. With the sudden prosperity there was a influx of new spirits, who also happened to be skilled in farming, who began to make their own homes in the District. New houses and faces seemingly appeared overnight. Life was going especially well for the spirits. Very well. Some even began to move deeper into the Rukongai, for the safety. But those that lived in the village since the beginning, unlike the new spirits, offered their thanks not to the Shinigami, but the totem of what lived in the lake whose shores they lived on.
How did this sudden growth in the human population affect the other inhabitants of the district though? Well, in truth, it didn't. There was a unspoken rule between them. The humans stayed on their shore, and left the other shores alone. Well, they kind of had to. Lake Altaga in the Southern 51st District, was essentially the border between the Wilderness and Rukongai. The northern shore was where the humans lived. The western and eastern shores were marshlands and swamps, uninhabitable by spirits and terrible farm land. The south, though, was where the true Wilderness was. Lake Altaga was home to the deity that the villagers revered, but these days he was not seen much by the human spirits. He had relocated himself, primarily, to the southern side of the lake. It was not done in spite of the humans. It was done because, well, he now had other responsibilities.
The southern forests did not possess the noise of the northern shores town. It was quiet compared to the humans. The sounds of nature were not polluted by the sounds of talking humans. Chirping birds, mating calls, falling trees, woodpeckers, bugs, the occasional scream of a Hollow, were the sort of things you heard on that side. The villagers dared not cross the lake to that side. They had barely an understanding of what existed on the furthest shores of the lake. Rumors of walking monsters, dens of Hollows, witches and warlocks, and many other rumors. They believed that the single island on the lake was what protected them from what would cross the waters and kill them all. Well, not the island itself but the being they called Naga that lived on it. It was true, in a way, though.
While most of the further districts in the Rukongai were often in danger of being attacked by Hollows, this particular town did not have that bad luck. They were protected by something. They themselves weren't actually being protected, it was just that they so happened to be on the positive receiving end of the creature defending Lake Altaga, its territory. The being called Naga was very real. But he wasn't seen much these days though. He was most often seen by the village children, since they were the ones who didn't often scream their heads off and grab something to beat the curious reptile away with. But when the children said they stopped seeing Naga, there was worry in some of the inhabitants that the guardian deity had vanished again. But he wasn't gone. No. Not at all.
On the southern shore, deep within the forest, the sound of trampling hooves filled the air and rocked the earth. A small herd of young deer, about seven of them, stampeded through the forest in a panicked rush. Their horns still freshly growing, it was obvious that these were juvenile deer. But what were they running from? Running through brush, trampling roots, scaling small hills, the deer just did not stop. Crying out they suddenly turned left, as if spooked by something, and began heading into a part of the forest that the trees were not so thick in. Snarling a few meters behind them, a black scaled beast burst out from the underbrush and pursued them from a safe distance. Snapping jaws, intense blue eyes, and feathers standing up atop his head, Umaroth was actively hunting. He was normally a lazy reptile, eating fish and turtles and deer that weren't paying attention when they drank from his lake...but recent events caused him to change tactics a little.
He'd been stalking this herd for the past hour now. Only when everything was ready did he lunge, scaring them and driving them out of the thicker forest. He had little trouble keeping pace with them, and even would snap at the rears of the ones falling behind due to exhaustion to get them spooked and running harder. What was he doing? Umaroth could have easily taken one by now, or honestly all of them considering how gluttonous he was, so what was he waiting for? Darting left and right he herded the deer further through the woods, before he noticed the break in the tree line ahead. Now was the time. Suddenly dashing forward, a clawed hand shot forward and ripped into the rear of the slowest deer. Yanked back as if made of bubbles, the large mammal was swung backwards and thrown against the trunk of a rather large tree. The impact killed it instantly.
His own prey secured, Umaroth turned to look at the herd fleeing from him out into the open field. Despite a few short breaths, Umaroth inhaled deeply and let out a deep, guttural, roar that easily dwarfed the sound of the stampeding, terrified, deer. Why did Umaroth suddenly roar though? Well that easy. He was letting out a signal. He wasn't the only one hunting after all. He wanted to see how they would do now that he lead the deer to where his pack was lying in wait.
