So I've been thinking about how failures work in fights. The failure, the mage race, fights by throwing spells around, and always fight from a distance. A decent failure should be next to untouchable in distance battles. And keeping them at a distance is the only way TO fight them, because if you, a physical fighter, were to somehow get past their flood and insane array of spells and strike the failure, you win! And then the failure explodes, and turns the fight into a draw, because you die too. Unless you're a tank-type character, with unreasonable defences, you're not going to survive this. Heck, since the explosion is a mile all around, which is what eight city blocks is close to, most distance mages would be consumed by the blast as well.
I'm not here talking about the free rs that failures get, or all the techs they get. I'm going to suggest a idea that's a bit out there. Failures as they are now, are living constructs of reiatsu, that detonate with the smallest amount of damage. What if, instead of that, when a race 'fails', they lose the ability to maintain their physical form, and use something to maintain their form. It could be pretty much anything. For example, a failure could be bound to a piece of clothing. If that clothing is damaged, the failure starts to fade away, without detonation.
What I was thinking was three variations of this. The first would be an object. By infusing themselves to something, like clothing or a weapon, they would be able to posses anyone who took hold of said object, much like a mod soul for a gigai. The person would be an npc, and the failure would be useless if the person and object were separated.
The second would be binding themselves to an animal. This would turn that animal into something known as a familiar, almost like a reverse bount. This method would let the failure's true self to show, creating a false body. The two would be bound together, and should the familiar be injured, the failure would start to fade. The animal would basically be just a normal animal, nothing really special about it.
The third, and least likely option, is binding themselves to a place. Much like how a ghost haunts a house, the failure could infuse themselves to a set area, having a false body when they choose. The failures would never be able to leave the area, but they essentially become that location, able to feel anything going on inside it.
This is a rough draft of the idea, so opinions would be appreciated.
