It was the start of a new life for Abgail Belrose. She was pretty much fresh out of college, and had only just started up her brand new job. Already, it was like she was in a complete fantasy world. Her life before had been full of dull things like business meetings and fancy dinners, but not anymore. Now her world consisted of the bizarre and occult. She was a scientist for Xcution now, and as a consequence of that, Karakura Town was the placed she called home. As if the difference between Polytechnique and Xcution hadn’t been vast enough, she was now working on learning Japanese and figuring out how to get by in a city that spoke no French and only a touch of English. Thankfully her boss managed to speak English at least, so it wasn’t all bad.
Really though, this entire world was totally different than anything she could have imagined a year ago. Her work in the last month had been all about developing virtual reality battle simulations for Anti-Hollow combat. Apparently it was some new experience that Xcution wanted to use to train average, powerless humans, like her, to be able to hold their own against some of the monsters of the world. Having specialized in Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality in college, the project itself was well within her expertise, but the subject matter was still bizarre to her.
Yet as fantastical as the whole experience was, it somehow felt so mundane. She had woken up at 7, grabbed some toast, cleaned herself up, and then hit the streets to walk to work. From 9-5 she sat in an office where she spent most of the day dicking around on the internet with some breaks to write code when she thought of a way to fix a problem she’d been stuck on. If her project could just replace Hollows with bears or something, then it honestly would have been no different from a job at a game dev studio.
But the subject matter wasn’t bears. It was Hollows. This new world had sucked in her and refused to let go. Her days weren’t spent making a mere game, but a training method to defeat soul eating monsters. Somehow, probably because she had never seen one in person, the entire thing was still right within her comfort zone. She never stopped to question it all, as she had always figured there was something after death, and there was plenty of evidence to back up the story of the afterlife that Xcution told her. There was never any reason to doubt them, and so she didn’t.
At the same time, she also knew she wasn’t really here because of her AI and VR talents. That was really just the excuse to get her in the door. They wanted her on their side because they had detected spiritual power in her. Despite her file saying that, and despite nearly a year with Xcution already, she had seen absolutely no proof of any kind of spiritual power flowing through her veins. Maybe it was just dormant or something, but after this long with a super-powerful agency, she had honestly expected something to come of it by now.
Maybe they were just looney.
Ah well. The clock struck five, and it was time to go home for the day. As much as Gail enjoyed her work, it was just a job, and she had other things to do with her time. ”I wonder what I should get for dinner…” she mused to herself on her way out of the downtown Karakura office. One of the little perks of speaking French natively was that she could talk to herself aloud, and no one else in the office had a clue what she was saying… as far as she knew at least. She’d started talking to herself probably more than was healthy… but she did at least try to hold conversations in Japanese with her coworkers! She was trying, and that was all that mattered to her.
That all paled in comparison to what she wanted to eat though. There was a new Korean Barbecue that had opened up a few weeks ago she’d been meaning to try. Why not tonight? ”How bad could it be?” It was a bit of a walk, but the weather was nice enough out that it didn’t bother her much. She was dressed fairly conservatively for work… mostly because it was laundry day, and she was still getting used to not having maids to look after her. As a result, she was wearing a white halter top, a fairly nice pair of brown slacks, and a cute little black pair of boots. Not having wanted to pair that with bedhead, she even bothered to put her hair up in a bun.
Dinner had hopefully be worth the long walk, as she had head pretty much clear across Karakura Town to get there. She’d had Korean Barbecue before and liked it in general. She had extra high hopes for this place. Apparently it was a branch of a new major hit restaurant in Tokyo that normally had multiple day long waiting lists. Because it hadn’t been in Karakura that long, she’d heard that she could still get a table pretty easily, but she had a paperback in her back pocket if she needed to wait awhile. Either way, at that moment, all she could really think about was the juicy taste of some sweet Korean Barbecue.
{Here's some peppy background music!}
