Grodd had to get out of the barracks. It was a beautiful day outside, with a cloudless sky and a nice summer breeze, and he was cooped up inside doing paperwork. He hated paperwork! As an unproven seated officer (at least unproven in the field) he was constantly being given tests. And just to piss him off, his superiors always made him take written tests instead of field tests. This kind of written test was stupid and weird. It was enchanted with Kidou so that it would give him a scenario, then interpret his written actions and give him more information as he "acted". It was all very strange, the man would rather be outside in the field actually practicing this instead of being stuck inside.
"You've come across a river. There still is the strange mist that prevents you from walking on air ground"
"I throw myself into the river and drown"
"THE END"
Suicide was always an out to this test. Sure, he would be reprimanded later for it, but for now he was out of here. Bolting out of the barracks, Grodd made a beeline for as far away as he could go. He almost was caught by his subordinate in charge of making sure that he didn't get out into the Wilderness before his work was done, but Grodd had finished his work so he managed to squeeze out before the officer realized that Grodd had thrown himself into the river in the scenario instead of taking it seriously. Finally free, the Shinigami got into his comfort zone, the forest.
Planning to take just a brisk stroll, if not a quick jog, Grodd left his clothes in a familiar hollow tree and took off through the woods. Today he had even left the loincloth tucked in there. He was going on his walk in his full comfortable nakedness. Everything was hanging out and he was off on his jog/run. There was no one around that he could sense, so he felt fine and invincible. No one would reprimand him today for not wearing any clothes, for it was just himself in the forest. Or so he thought. The man hadn't taken any time to practice energy sensory, working more on his physical and spiritual strength, so what came next shouldn't have been a surprise.
Grodd ran straight into a member of the Beast Clan. He hadn't noticed her at all, in fact, he hadn't yet understood what he had tripped over that had left him lying on the ground staring up at the sky. The Chameleon Beast Clanswoman was camouflaged, and had been hunting a hive of Bee-Hollows. She was startled by the sudden naked man running into her and had let go of her disguise before letting out a girlish scream. "EWWWWWWW!" Grodd twisted his head backwards to see her, and then quickly realized that he was about to be reprimanded with extreme prejudice.
The scaled tail moved quick, slamming into Grodd's chest multiple times before he could get up, scramble over to a tree, and wrap a large leaf around his waist. Going out in the nude had rarely ever been a good thing for him, even if it was the only way that he felt truly comfortable. Not really knowing how to react to the woman who was freaking out, he slowly inched out from behind his tree with his hands raised. He walked into the clearing slowly, especially since she was now carrying a scaled spear that he hadn't seen before. Even more intimidating, though, was the cloud forming behind her.
This set of Bee Hollows that the Beast Clanswoman had been hunting was a particularly nasty Adjuchas who usually took the form of a Queen Bee but could separate into thousands of little bees at will and hide. The little bees could slowly replicate to the point where if enough of them were not tracked down and destroyed, the consciousness that was the Hollow could still survive. It had lived a long life, and had eaten thousands of souls. It could continue to divide for a long long time. Why the Beast Clanswoman was hunting it was beyond Grodd's knowledge, but regardless this Hollow was dangerous. And she was conglomerating and getting ready to attack...
Mute as he was, Grodd could not just scream "look out behind you!", and because no one tended to understand his sign language, he decided to act instead. Reiatsu pooled in his hand as he mentally prepared a Kidou and launched it at the Hollow behind the Beast Clanswoman. The Queen Bee didn't expect the attack as she hadn't known that he was there, so it hit her squarely in the chest. Unfortunately, she was much more powerful than Grodd's weak Sho, and thus was able to shrug it off after skidding back only a couple feet. If that was all that Grodd could do, he was going to be in trouble from the Hollow whose attention was now on him.
"Zztay out of our buizzznezzz, zzztupid naked zzzhinigami!" The buzzing talking was super weird, but z's almost sound like s's, so she wasn't too hard to understand. Talking, however, had definitely alerted the Chameleon Beast Clanswoman to the position of the Queen Bee Hollow, which prompted a quick slash from the spear. The spear swung out faster than Grodd could see, as the woman's arm suddenly blurred with incredible speed. It was almost as if she used Shunpo, but only with one arm... It was a technique that Grodd had never seen before, and he was fascinated.
Shunpo Karin wasn't a terribly unique way to attack, so it was surprising that the Third seat had never witnessed it before. However, how was he to see the techniques of those older and more skilled than he if he was always ducking away to go run in the forest? His habitual avoidance of training was only going to facilitate a sort of ignorance to the techniques of those who had the talent to learn them. Whatever that technique had been called, Grodd set in his mind the will to go to a training Shinigami and ask about it. He'd even write down what he wanted to say if it meant getting the information he desired.
But for right now, he had to stay focused on this pair of clashing women. The Beast Clanswoman's lightning fast strike had gone nowhere as the Queen simply broke apart into bees and reformed without a scratch on her. "Phyzzzical attackzzz are uzzzlezzzzzz againzzzt uzzz, zzztupid beazzzt!" Part of the Queen's flesh dissolved into bees which formed a pseudo-limb covered in barbs. The Adjuchas lashed out at the Beast Clanswoman with the limb, only to hit something else. Grodd had used Shunpo to get in between the ladies, his dagger of a Zanpakutou out to counter attack at the Hollow's weak point, her mask.
He wasn't expecting the physical strength of the Queen Bee to be so high and he was thrown back into a tree having been pierced by dozens if not hundreds of small barbs. The Queen's venom was highly toxic and Grodd's spiritual resistance to such things was low. He began to suffer from an immense allergic reaction to the venom and his throat swelled up and he began to lose consciousness. As he did so, he felt a familiar furred paw rest on his hand. His Spirit drew his mind into his Inner World rather than into the oblivion of unconsciousness.
In the familiar forest, Grodd took a deep breath in and savored it. For some reason, the pain and allergic reactions his real body was feeling hadn't bled through into his Inner World just yet, so he felt alive and free. But the golden monkey in front of him was having none of it. Her foot paw tapped impatiently as she waited for him to look at her so she could sign. When he got around to it, she started "talking" in a fury. What the hell were you thinking? Jumping in front of an enemy like that? Utterly disgraceful!
The Shinigami crossed his arms and rolled his eyes. Who was she, his mother? Eventually, he calmed his attitude and replied to her. I figured that I was strong enough to take it. I've been growing a lot lately. The Zanpakutou Spirit's tail straightened out angrily and her fur bristled up like a balloon was held to it. She was not satisfied with his response, much less pleased by it. I'm the one who decides if you're strong enough. Her signing lead to more than just sass from Grodd. He was visibly angry by her "words". She didn't beleive in him either? Didn't think him strong enough? He'd show her. Show them all!
As if she could read his mind, she signed again. Fine. Show me. Leaves started to stir off the ground and burst away as she transformed herself. When the glow of reiatsu faded and the trees and leaves settled, the golden monkey had been completely made new. Her small arms seemed to be made completely of bone, and her tail appeared to have grown two feet longer. Without hesitation, she rushed at him, claws extended. Wait, since when did she have such long claws? That was definitely new... And she looked bigger already, steadily growing taller.
She jumped at him with impressive speed and had already latched her claws into his arm and her tail around her neck before he had responded. He bit at her tail while striking at her belly with his additional arm, but was completely shocked when he bit down on nothing more than hair. She wasn't hurt at all, and in fact just gripped tighter to choke him more. Additionally, she kicked out at his stomach to try to knock out the remaining air from his lungs. Although she was faster, the spirit was weaker than him and he had taken harder hits before.
He braced his abs in expectation of the kick and managed to keep his diaphragm from pushing all the air out of his lungs and knocking the wind out of him. A few more blows to her stomach, however, and her grip was loosening from his throat. The Shinigami twisted his body and neck and dislodged her claws from his arm and swung her whole body at a nearby tree. He released at the perfect time to send her back first into the large redwood. Surely, the fight would be out of her at that point. She was small and weak, after all.
Grodd was sorely mistaken, as his Spirit leapt off the tree immediately, giving him no time to recover from the cuts in his arm or the lack of oxygen to his lungs. She was aimed at his face, claws outstretched which looked even longer than last time. And her "tail" was longer still. One wild swing later and the golden primate was headed for another tree, though. The Shinigami still had the longer reach, though he was quickly losing that advantage. It didn't take long for her to pick herself up off the ground, though.
This time, her paws were pointed at him but she wasn't rushing towards him. He thought he might get a break, but the onslaught continued as her claws fired out of her paw and tore across the clearing towards Grodd's chest. At nearly four inches long, those things could be deadly, and they moved much faster and with much more force than the third seat could match right now. He raised his already wounded arm to catch them as he charged at her. The claws ripped into his flesh and hit the bone as they embedded into him, but he wasn't slowing down yet.
He collided with the Zanpakutou Spirit and wrapped her up in a bear hug, trapping her tail against her. With her claws sent out, all that was left on her paw was sensitive flesh which he had trapped between her and his flesh causing them to burn with pain. He held her tightly until he could feel the claws start to poke him again. With a final burst of energy, he threw her into a tree and finished it with a powerful punch. Defeated, she slunk to the ground and returned to her original form. I'm proud of you...
She touched his face, and through the connection she poured information. Her name, how she preferred to be released, and the details of her strength. Oerwoud Hart... A perfect name. The Inner World began to fade as Grodd's body lost the last of its consciousness. When he awoke, the Chameleon Beast Clanswoman was standing over him, pressing a mixture of mud and herbs into his skin. When his eyes opened, she turned invisible and disappeared. Strong enough to now stand, and seeing nothing of the Queen Bee or the Chameleon, Grodd limped towards the Seireitei, Zanpakutou firmly in hand.
