If you believed that delusional old bat Caeser, the holy soldiers of the Vandenreich existed only to serve as little more than extensions of Der Kaiser's will. Normally, this would be something that Jo would have an extremely deep-seated problem with, if only due to what authority tended to do to people. After all, it had all but ensured beatings from both her father and the Shinigami when she had tried to follow her own path. However, there was one big difference as far as the so-called God-Emperor was concerned: He wanted the same thing as Jo. Specifically, this was the death of all Shinigami and the establishment of a Quincy afterlife regime. Oh, and the extermination of all Hollows as well, which was nothing more than icing on the cake.
At first, this was fantastic news to the newly self-made cyborg, especially with the suggestion that she could grow even more powerful as she served him. However, as time went on, Jo discovered something about the Vandenreich that gave her pause. Namely, they didn't pay her. Oh, sure, they provided room and board, but Jo was working her ass off for them! It was like they didn't want to reward her for not acting on her urges to spit in Caeser's face and then run off into the night, cursing the forced church-lessons. Really, if they had any idea how hard that was, they'd understand as well as she did that she deserved a kickback!
Maybe if it weren't for the constant maintenance of her bionics, she could let the lack of pay slide. But as it stood, she had to come up with staggering amounts of money in order to simply continue to breathe or have limbs. Sure, the initial materials had been provided by the Hidden Empire, but after that, it was on her. It was like the higher-ups were more concerned with matters spiritual than material, especially when those material matters pertained to the Lieutenant who literally paid an arm and a leg twice over to be in the Vandenreich. Of course, Jo didn't expect anything more from some of the half-breeds there, but at least the pure-bloods should look out for their own!
