It was late at night when Katrina stepped through the Senkai Gates of the Kawada. For all intents and purposes a normal gate, but where there should be blank white, there instead is the giant black Phoenix that is the ever present symbol of the Kawada. Katrina was rather proud of it, actually. It was a new addition to the gate, one she felt was appropriate ... even if it was a bit unnecessary. She snorted angrily.
'No matter. After tonight, no person will mock me - or my family. If they do, we will wipe them off the map.' She shook her locks of black hair haughtily out of her face as the gate closed behind her. If she were honest with herself - and she always was - her visit tonight wasn't entirely professional. She was excited to see him again. Kazura Uzaki was intelligent, handsome, and more importantly, useful and willing.
She blushed pink. 'Willing to help, not- oh, Kami, I didn't need that before I'm going to meet him.' She took a deep, steadying breath; she would need it. The opposite sex is not something she is familiar with, nor are the accompanying feelings and ... sensations. A shiver ran down her spine as she recalled their last meeting. Granted, it is a memory tinged with anger and triumph, but also something deeper, something far more primal that seemed to focus on the way he pinned her to the ground-
Her reflection broke her out her daydream. With a start, she realized she had been walking towards his window without realizing it. But now that she's here, she wondered how she could miss it. His cologne - Millisime Imperial, if she did her research correctly, and she always does her research correctly - was all over it, and she with the enhanced senses was able to smell it easier than a hunter tracks his prey.
But it was getting late, and she had with she had to do. Before she stepped into the window to surprise her business partner and, when she felt like admitting it, crush, she had to make sure she was presentable. A silken band was a procured, an inch wide band of gold with the Kawada Phoenix emblazoned at both ends. Unlike normal, however, this phoenix had a crown, the universal symbol for leadership. With this, she tied her hair back into a perfect ponytail, the symbol of her clan visible from behind both ears. With the perfect bow she tied and the long, black ponytail, she looked a little younger, but much more severe.
A small wind blew in his window then, and Katrina decided to use this distraction to slip in. Like a ghost she stepped in, letting her toes touch the ground before sinking into the balls of her feet. The tiny figure slowly rose, her golden cloak breaking up her figure enough to blend in effectively. In fact, lest her erstwhile partner was paying attention, Katrina would pass unnoticed. Then, just as silently as she stepped into the website, so she did into the light.

Do I work too much?
Lately, all Kazura had done was work. And not even the fun kind of work. Paperwork, more paperwork, and even more paperwork. His creative talents were currently being cooped up by Patents, Sales Reports, Marketing, and absolutely horrible products being pitched to him. I mean, come on, grape flavored bullets that the soldiers can eat or shoot at enemies? Lead poisoning, regardless of the grape flavor, isn't good. Or what about that guy who wanted Uzaki Enterprises to mass produce his "Panty Cams". Creeper.
After finishing another stack of patent requests and going over the sales from last quarter, Kazura reclined in his comfortable leather chair. He loosened his tie and unbuttoned the top two buttons on his dress shirt. The office had been closed an hour or so, and as the sun had long gone down, he felt like he could be done with the busy work. There were probably hours before he'd be ready for sleep, so he pulled out his folder of incomplete projects. The fun kind of projects. Spiritual projects. The very first page on the top of the folder was earmarked "high priority" and he remembered why nearly immediately.
The first page directed him to the Soul Phone he had been given by the Lady Kawada in this very office, just many floors down. That was one piece of equipment that hadn't left his immediate vicinity since she tossed it to him. He pulled it out of the drawer he had placed it in and just rest it on the table. He wanted to tear it apart, see what made it tick, but he didn't want to damage any of the potentially sensitive components. Instead, if he was to use it, he would probably place the entirety of the phone into the hardware of a computer, accessing the data it could receive and interpret directly, rather than messing with it.
So focused on the phone, he didn't hear anything until the stealthy woman stepped into the light. "I have work for you." A genuine smile overtook Kazura's face as he dramatically shut his "to-do" folder and shoved it back into his drawer enthusiastically. He thought about the way he was dressed, lazily and possibly inappropriately, but shrugged it off and left his shirt hanging open just a little. "I was just thinking about you, Lady Kawada. You and this phone you left. Any work you have for me is work worth putting at high priority. What can a peasant like me do for you, Ma'am?"
JIf Katrina thought he looked good before, awash in the sweat and grime that comes with training, it was nothing to how he looked now in his casual attire, his tie loose and his top buttons undone ... Well, it was almost enough to make a girl lose her mind.
'Oh, Kami ...'
She licked her suddenly dry lips, and tore her gaze (somewhat reluctantly) to Kazura' s face. 'He said ... he was thinking ... about me ...?!' Heat, equal parts embarrassment and arousal, crept down her spine, causing her to shudder. 'It isn't fair! He had this power over me, but I don't ... have ...' She could hit herself. Of course she did! An absolutely impish look crossed her face for just a brief second before she rearranged her features into a more convincing mask.
"Before we begin, is it ... ok if I get comfortable? It has been a long journey and I find myself rather ... uncomfortable in this thick, heavy thing ..." Carefully, ensuring the soft fabric slid ritually erotically down her body, she shrugged off the outer Haori. This left only a skin tight leotard, as black as night, to protect against the elements and any prying eyes.
"Aah ... must better!" She gave a stretch then, much as a cat would to stretch cramping muscles, but for Katrina it had the added effect of showing off her form while remaining innocent. In the last second, before she settled back onto her feet, she threw a look at him over her shoulder, one that intimated that she was well aware of his games, but she came prepared. "To business, then, Kazura-Kun?" She smirked again, pixie like.
Then she was serious, or at least moderately more so. "I have several projects for you. I can pay very well." Her finger brushed against an odd shaped pouch on her belt, one shaped in the vaguest interpretation of a butterfly. She just smirked again, waiting for him to respond to both her flirting attempts and her attempt to intrigue him.

What sort of transformation had befallen the Noble Shinigami? At their last encounter she was cold, unemotional, and even offensive. The person in front of Kazura, who may wear the same face, but was flirty and was dressed a whole lot more provocatively... On purpose, perhaps? And the way she stretched... could drive an ordinary man crazy. However, Kazura was no ordinary man. He was capable of focusing on a business meeting, even if it was extremely late and there was a flirty woman in his office... Alas, flirting was not consent, and Kazura wasn't really sure that he wanted to woo that. She seemed unstable, and was a Shinigami. He was a Human.
So, forcing those thoughts out of his head, for now, he buttoned up his shirt and straightened his tie. A small gesture, but one that could potentially speak volumes. "I am definitely in need of your kind of work. The day to day, mundane work that I usually get to do just isn't the same as the kind that you and your kind offer." Standing up, the Fullbringer offered a hand forwards. A handshake to start off this discussion on the "work" that Katrina had for him to do. It was friendly, yet professional. Intimate, but also distant. The perfect maneuver, in his mind.
PSo, to business then. It was hard to hide the smirk that threatened to grow on her face at her victory, but she managed, if barely. 'Seems like Kazura-Chan can't stand the heat.' Her sharp eyes didn't miss the very pointed gesture that was him buttoning his shirt; it said more than any words possibly could. 'I can't believe I'm disappointed that I can't see his chest anymore ...' Regardless, she took the proffered hand. "To business, then."
The soft sound of a clip heralded the odd-looking pouch. She raised her clenched fist, holding whatever had been in the pouch. "To the Shinigami, travel to and in the Human World can be confusing. The air is thin to us, and, more importantly, we can afford for knowledge of us to become common knowledge. That is where Hell Butterflies come in." She relaxed her fist then, revealing the black insect in her palm. Feebly, it unfurled its wet wings. It was new to the world, untainted by the souls it must ferry.
"These insects allow we Shinigami to travel safely through the Dangai Precipice world. While here, they allow us to travel your world as ghosts, treating solid matter as if it was not even there." Her voice grew cold, distant, as she continued. "But like all living creatures, they can be killed very easily. They are frail, able to be killed by nearly any spiritual attack, and rather unintelligent as well."
She placed the butterfly on his desk, where it sat lamely, it's wings drying in the light cast by his light. "What I need of you, Mr. Uzaki, is to perfect these creatures. They must possess the same abilities the original do, but without the flaws of organic creatures. Specifically, I only wish for them to be usable by me and those I want." Her voice, though remaining polite, was also demanding and inflexible. She expected much of him, that much was obvious, but he also had much to gain.
Her voice took on a softer edge. "You will, of course, be compensated handsomely. Recently, I was made the head of my household. With it came unrestricted access to our very prodigious funds. I also sense an inquiring mind, so perhaps information would be appreciated, as well?" Regardless of his answer, the butterfly was his, to do what he liked with ... so long as he complied with her requests.

I'm an inventor, not a biologist...
It was most certainly a tall order that the short noble was asking for. In fact, it was the first of its kind. Not only was Kazura expected to work with living creatures, which are far less reliable than machines. What works for one specimen might not work for the entirety of the population. And if you can't manage to make both a male and a female with the same traits... then nothing was going to be done. Breeding was something that Kazura had no expertise in, at all, so he was probably better off doing something a little more challenging, but with a higher success rate. He could either craft armor for these creatures, build something new with the same properties, or directly modify individuals rather than breed a population.
For the first option, it didn't quite meet two of the requests. Well, more like it failed at every request. While the creatures would be more resilient, they would definitely still be flawed, organic creatures. Second, it wouldn't be hard to collect the armor and stick it on one's own Hell Butterfly once one had been defeated, making it so more than just the noble and her allies would have access to the technology. It also would weigh the creature down, and butterflies were not known for any lifting power of any kind. So he would immobilize them, defend them incompletely, and give the secrets to the Kawada's enemy. Not a viable option.
The second one seemed promising. He could create a machine of sorts that had a wireless uplink with others, allowing it to send and receive messages. However, he would have no clue how to replicate the effects of safe travel through this "Dangai" or how to walk through walls. So, without an actual creature providing those spiritual effects, all he would be making is a two way radio. Definitely not very impressive, especially when it fails at all of the requirements of this Work Order. So far he was at two strikes, but he was not about to give up. The last strike he had left in his arsenal, however, would need a little bit more information before he could proceed to plan.
"Are these living creatures? Spiritual ones? How similar are they to my world's butterflies? Do they undergo any sort of cocoon stage and metamorphose?"
'He is thinking about it ... that is a good sign. I half-expected him to ... but no. This is good.' His questions were good ones; thankfully, they were all questions she could easily answer. "Human world butterflies are fragile things, no? Playthings of children? Only designed to look pretty?" She sneered. "No. Hell Butterflies are as closely related as human and a gorilla." She relaxed then, balancing on the edge of his desk. Her long legs, the nails of the bare feet painted an icy blue, crossed. She leaned back on her hands, the long nails painted to match her toes. She seemed tired.
"They are raised from Hell Worms, in the labs of our Squad 12. They are creatures born in the Seiretei, fed on reishi and bred by it. So yes, they are spiritual. The Hell Cocoons they go for a delicacy in some places of the Seiretei but otherwise, only the final metamorphisis possesses any powers." She sighed, sitting up to brush her bangs out of her hair. "So, Mister Uzaki? What say you? Can you help me?" Her eyes, burning and intense from the depth of her passion, burned against him. This was it; the fate of her family hinged on his decision.

Kazura listened intently to what Katrina had said about the butterflies, and had to regrettably shake his head. "I might be able to do it, but not with that butterfly there. It is too old. I need a Hell Worm if I am to genetically graft steel to its DNA. I will need that butterfly to map the genome of the oldest metamorphosis, but I will need a Hell Worm to make anything happen."
"... That might be possible." It wouldn't be easy, that was due. The defenses at Squad 12 were nothing to laugh at, but with the right planning and bribery, it would be possible. "Very well. Do what you must. I will return with what you need. And more." She stood then, standing without making a sound, before a flash step took her away.
OOC: I'll post a tiny little adventure thing where she sneaks into Squad 12 next post.

With the Shinigami gone, Kazura began to get to work. He removed a micro thin needle from a drawer in his desk and slowly extracted as much blood and cells as he could without harming the creature unnecessarily. He then got it a cage so that it would be a little more comfortable while he ordered some parts from a lab downstairs. There were machines that already existed in the human world that could analyze DNA effectively, taking a cell's worth of DNA at a time and smashing it apart to record the base pair sequences. While the machinery was being prepared and brought to him, he was preparing his centrifuge so that he could access the raw DNA that he needed.
First, he centrifuged the blood that he removed from the Hell Butterfly to get all of the junk out of it; all of the contaminants but also to isolate the red and white blood cells from the plasma. Then he added a chemical that dissolved the cell walls to make the cells explode, leaving the nucleus and DNA accessible. By adding a chemical that made the DNA clump together, he centrifuged again to get all of the non essential cell debris away from what he actually needed. What he was left with was single stranded DNA in solution. One more chemical and he had just pure DNA. Some of the DNA was put in a buffer to allow him to store it in a chilled environment, but the rest of it was ready for the machinery to analyze.
It would take awhile, especially because the machinery needed to smash and smash and smash and smash to be able to get all of the millions of base pairs decoded and in order, but Katrina had a lot of work to do, so Kazura had time. As he studied what came out, he cross referenced it with known Genomes in insect life. And by cross referenced, I mean he projected all of the millions of letters onto his walls. His instinct was so refined, and his talent for learning so effective that the millions of letters didn't just get lost, he was able to scan them all and understand them. He wouldn't be able to or need to remember them, just look for the patterns that he noticed in already discovered Genomes and then make note of it.
With the Hell Butterfly Genome being mapped, Kazura explored other genomes such as Armadillo, Turtle, Lobster, and Oyster. He explored what made them armored, whether it was stone secretions of Oyster, exoskeletons of Lobster, shell of Turtle, or plating of Armadillo. The secretions of Oyster were promising for helping a butterfly get a film of armor so that it wasn't too weighed down, but that would limit its movement. The plating of Armadillo or exoskeletons of Lobster would still allow it to have a lot of mobility, but it would have weaknesses in between the plates. The shell of Turtle wasn't that promising either since it was extremely heavy and would have half of its body being weak.
Kazura decided to mix the armors of the Lobster and the Oyster to get the proper armor as requested by Katrina. However, he knew that he would not only need to genetically enhance this creature's muscles into more avian wing muscles, but also give it strength training in its early stages of life. With a battle plan of how to genetically enhance and modify this creature, all that was left was to get the Hell Worm and prepare the DNA portions that would act like Viruses, adding their genes to the target's DNA structure or cutting out other genes. It would take a lot of work, and a lot of time, but the end result, if successful, would be fascinating.
The trip through the Senkeimon was a lonely one, the light seeming darker than the eternal night of the world they traveled through. She was preoccupied, both with the man whom she found herself fancying and wIth the ordeal she found herself facing. The former was by far the most troubling, despite possible impending doom. She found him attractive, that was no doubt, but so did half the girls in Karakura. And it was little secret that power was arousing to her, in a way that no soft touch or gentle word could be. That was it.
Christ, she hoped that was it.
She had no time to contemplate any other alternatives, however, as soon Hi Kyuden was coming into view, and she had to remember to be unseen. Which admittedly wasn't difficult. She knew the grounds better than any head before her, and soon she was vaulting over the border of the Rukongai. Her target was deep in the Wilderness, and even with her speed, it would take half an hour to get there. She reached her target just as the moon was at its apex, stealthily climbing the walls of the large compound and sneaking into a storage room that she knew would remain unguarded.
The Hell Menagerie was split into two parts; the indoor Daycare where they grew Hell Worms into cocoons, and the covered Dome effete Hell Butterflies flew. Each section was guarded by a series of guards and locks that prevented unwanted entry. None of which did anything if you had the key. Which she did, picked from a sleeping guard in front of the storeroom. Carefully, Katrina had picked her way over him, then used the key to enter the daycare. Inside was pitch black, but she could feel her way around enough to pick up two squirming objects; a black caterpillar and cocoon.
Two hours after she left, suddenly Katrina would return, holding two bags in her hand. One contained the items obtained from the menagerie, the others items she had acquired through her life which, if she was lucky, would be used to make her even more powerful than before. "I have returned, as promised." The bag was gently placed on the table. It was of the clear Ziploc variety, and inside the bugs could be seen quite clearly.

Kazura took the specimens carefully, very awed by what was in front of him. This creature was the ticket into the Soul Society, and it was also the key to engineering a defense against the Shinigami "Walk through Walls" annoyance that had plagued the inventor. By studying them, he would finally be able to protect his building from their unwanted invasion. They'd have to walk through the main doors like mortals. But, first, he had a job to complete. Taking a tiny sample of the Hell Worm DNA, he once again compiled the genome in order to look for differences. He had to make sure that when he coded for the advanced traits that he didn't take out other important ones.
"I hope that you've brought me at least one male and one female? Or do they not have genders? Also... You mention that they feed on Reishi. This world, as you know, is not very dense in the substance. Did you have a plan for feeding them while I work out the solution to that? I have a couple short term solutions, but nothing yet that would allow long term breeding. Which will be absolutely necessary if I'm to manipulate their genetics to be more able to do what you need."
Katrina nodded, curtly. ”One of each, of course. I assumed it would come in handy.” The second problem was baffling for a second before she shrugged. ”They can be fed off the meanest amounts of reishi. We'll cross that hurdle when we get to it.” At that, she leaned against the wall, arms crossed and deep in thought.

With a shrug, Kazura began working. He brought up a few blocks of a supercomputer to use the compiled genome of the butterflies and simulate the creature's ability to fly while adding in some desirable traits. For awhile, the simulation could find no possible way of having insect physiology but also being armored. It was just too heavy. But while he tweaked and widened the parameters to include bird physiology, everything became a lot simpler. By using the traits of birds that were made for flying while also carrying small loads, he was able to tweak until the simulation had given him a viable set of genes.
The resulting product was a genetic masterpiece. A Hell Butterfly, with the musculature of birds, with the exoskeleton of the Lobster and the ability to secrete calcium to secrete an oyster like covering as well. Now, the real issue would be getting these genes to coexist with its very Spiritual qualities. And for that, the fullbringer would need to test by trial and error. And for that, he needed to breed test subjects. For now, they would feed off of the Reiatsu orb that Taien had brought to the fullbringer inventor. He would need a more permanent solution, but for now this would have to do. "Anything else that you need to commission from me?"
