Chapter 1: The Raid
The afternoon breeze gently combed my hair as I gazed into the sky with the spaceships flying along with the stars. The smell of sulfur and oil lingered in the air that was almost breathtaking to those who aren’t used to it. Sorry, I’m Cedris Koesean, and this is the world of Eintor. It’s not much in truth, but if you want to get some skills on machines and on how to survive this is the perfect place for anyone. I live in the 2nd District, or the Lower Plate for more clarification. Weapons of any kind in the 2nd District are forbidden because of all the oil and gasoline in the air. One grenade can equal to 24.6 miles blast radius. If that were to happen then the 1rst District which is above us will just crash on our heads. God knows what will happen if that occurred here, but one thing for sure is that it can equal too many deaths if that were to happen.
“Cedris! Where in blazes are you boy?!” Glibur shouted. He’s my teacher/master on my schooling and he teaches me a lot about machines. He’s also a Dwarf, and he loves to mess with metals and he even opened a shop called Rahohu Mech. Service. I stood up from the torn wing of an airplane from the 2000’s that just so happens to be in our property, and I could use it to build a ship, but Glibur wouldn’t allow it. Building spacecraft without a certificate can get you thrown in jail for a couple decades. I climbed down from the heap of junk and almost fell. I dusted myself off and walked up to the old Dwarf.
“How many times should I have to tell you not to run off like that?! Come on, you’re supposed to greet the customers!” He scolded. I just grinned at him. I’ll admit he did raise me like his own for the past 17 years of my life, but one of the things that I know is that he’s terrible at being angry. “Yeah I know I was just enjoying the view of the sky for a little bit.” I excused. He just rolled his eyes for he heard that same excuse over and over. He sighed as we walked through the back door to the shop. “Well, just make sure you complete all of your responsibilities before you go off anywhere alright? We don’t want to get scolded by Darewyn again.” He pleaded as he got back to his workbench and continued on repairing a little cleaning droid. Darewyn, I hate that man with a passion and for good reasons too. He’s a Noble that basically runs everything on the 2nd District and he loves to point out the bad characteristics about anything to make them doubt their beliefs.
I went over to the counter to find no one there, as usual. I was a little bored so while I was waiting on a customer I picked up a small spider looking droid that I was working on a couple months ago. Although, it’s not small for it is pretty big compared to an actual spider, but it still works nonetheless. I took out my tools from my little kit and started to fix up on its plating. The plating was a little dusty and the eight joints to its six legs were a little rickety, but it was still in good shape despite it was made out of junk. Then the bell rang, and it made me look up to see a small group of well-dressed Nobles that walked in. A sudden ping of fear and anger ran through my heart when I saw them, but I kept it to the minimum. A middle-aged man with a brown beard streaked with gray and slicked back hair wearing a brown trench coat with a linen shirt with dark blue jeans walked up to me. His stormy grey eyes met mine and something about him gave me the chills.
“Can I help you sir?” I asked politely as I could. A young girl was fingering one of the Astromech Droids and accidently pushed the power button and it spurred to life. She jumped when it did the penguin dance trying to move but I locked its tracking motions. She looked at me with an innocent look and the man looked back with his eyebrows raised. I walked to the girl and the Droid and I deactivated it by switching it back off. Then I look back to the girl who was about my age range and she had her dark brown hair pulled back with stormy grey eyes like the man’s were. “It would be best if you didn’t touch anything for now.” She looked down like she was ashamed and I walked back to the counter with the man who was fingering my spider droid. He looked up at me in eye contact again like he was studying me.
“Is there a machine or droid that you’re specifically looking for?” I asked. He drew back his hand. He finally spoke and it was strong and it felt like someone smacked me in the face. “I am looking for something in particular yes, but rather somebody.” He explained. This is strange; he’s not a debt dealer or else I would’ve seen him wandering around before already, but I’ve never seen or heard of this guy or that girl! “If you’re looking for Glibur then he’s round back. I can go get him if you want.” I was about to go, but his hand whipped out and grabbed my wrist strongly. “No, not him I’m afraid. Are you perhaps, Cedris Koesean by any chance?” I frowned at him as I shrugged his grip off.
“So what if I am? What business do you have with me and who the heck are you people?!” I demanded. The girl seemed shocked for a second, and then she slowly walked up to the counter. “You’re Cedris?” She asked like she can’t believe what she heard the last time. “Yes I am Cedris Koesean; now please tell me just what’s going on.” That’s when Glibur came up with extra parts and he dropped them when he saw the two. He froze with the astonished look on his face. “Hello old friend, it’s been a while since we last met Glibur, but I see that you’re as humbly as ever.” The man commented in a sarcastic tone. Then Glibur grinned at them. “Well I’ll be damned, Agraeld Legerimas, when the hell did you get here!” They both laughed and embraced each other by the forearm. The girl was still looking at me like she couldn’t believe that I was speaking the truth. Agraeld stepped back and wrapped his arm around the girl in a warmly manner.
“This is Aravia, my daughter.” She smiled at Glibur and they hugged as well. Then Glibur raised his hand to me. “I bet you don’t remember this young man here!” He said in a sarcastic tone. Agraeld chuckled too. “I’ll admit, I didn’t recognize him at first, but he’s Cedris Koesean correct?” He asked again. Glibur nodded his head. Agraeld looked at me again for the third time with those gazes of his. “I know you may not know me, and I don’t expect you to, but I’m here on behalf of your father.” It took me a second to register what he just said. The only thing I could say was; “What?” Aravia got closer to me, like her face was five feet from mine. “I don’t know he doesn’t look much of a Warlord’s son, not to mention the Red Wings Captain’s son.” She commented. Warlord? Red Wings?! Just what the hell is going on?!
“Don’t judge just by looking at the cover of the book, there’s more to it than meets the eye.” Agraeld said. Ok let me explain on what a Warlord is; a Warlord is basically a ruler of one or more planets in the universe, but most would refer to them as Senators because calling them Warlords just makes them sound like conquerors. However, there are a small group of Warlords called the Circle who gives out the law and enforces them throughout the universe. The Red Wings are an organization of 13 Warlords and they protect the innocents from disasters or invasion by rebellious aliens. But even they have a leader, which is their Captain to which they follow with loyalty and with high respect. I never caught the Captain’s name for people hardly heard it in public other than Captain.
“Wait a minute, my dad is a Warlord?!” I could hardly believe that unless I was bash on the head a couple times to make me crazy. Both Agraeld and Glibur nodded in agreement. I shook my head in disbelief. “Ok, if this is a joke it’s not funny.” I claimed, but Agraeld nodded again. “That is true for this is no laughing matter, but if you two could please come to our ship on Dock B53 we would greatly appreciate that.” Glibur thought about it for a moment. “So is it time already?” He asked like he was expecting this to happen. Agraeld nodded. “I’m afraid so old friend, and it would be best if we leave almost immediately if possible.” He said in urgency. Aravia gave me a slight push.
“Come on, I’ll help you get your belongings.” She declared. It seemed like I had no choice, so I went to my room upstairs and with Aravia’s help I packed my clothes and my personal case as well as packing up my datapad and datachips as well. “Ok, is that everything Cedris?” She asked with the same urgency tone in her voice. It was like she was scared of something. “Is something coming after us?” I asked in curiosity. She bit her lip for a second. “Let’s just say if we don’t get out of here, this place is going to be stripped down to the ground soon, bringing us along with it.” She explained. Metaphorically, yeah someone is coming after us and they aren’t the friendly kind unfortunately. We rushed downstairs to find Glibur packed most of his tools and mine as well with a sack full of food we had left slung over his shoulder. I rushed over to the counter to pick up the spider droid and tuck it into the side pocket of my rucksack. “Why do you want to keep that?” Aravia asked with almost disgust in her voice. I shrugged my shoulders.
“It gives me something to do.” I said as I walked past her and got next to Glibur.
Then the door opened and a large group of dark armored figures poured in with batons. Agraeld just waved his hand and a shelf of heavy machinery just fell on top of the group. I cocked my head, and before I could ask about it Aravia grabbed my hand and pulled me out the back door. We ran throughout the junkyard, but Glibur got lost for once since he opened the shop. I shook Aravia’s hand off and I gracefully climbed up the pile of junk and got a good view of our surroundings. I scanned the area and thankfully there was the back way out, but something told me to look for something that was fast and can get us to the 1rst District. Then I spotted an airspeeder that was a little rusted but last time I checked that thing it was still operational. I pointed to the way out and they all nodded and went for the back way. But when I looked back the large group was weaving through the junkyard scanning for anything that would give us away. I quickly ran along the wall of junk and when the wall intersected with another that led to the airspeeder I took a right. My muscles were already starting to burn with all the weight on my shoulders, but I jumped off the wall and landed on the speeder. I dropped my pack on the driver side as I took out the wires that hung loosely underneath the hub. I grabbed the red wire with the blue wire and placed the two copper wires together and a spark of electricity ran through them. I tried again, but the speeder wouldn’t start. Then I tried for the third time and it finally sputtered to life. I quickly got up and sat into the driver’s seat with my hands on the wheel. The repulsers were stabilized and so was the engine, and when I pressed the pedal it raced forward. Thankfully I can drive pretty well as I weaved through the junkyard to the back way.
That’s when I realized that my right leg was bleeding pretty badly, but I ignored it as I drove. When I spotted the three, I slowed down to a stop and they reluctantly got on. Glibur got the passenger seat while the other two sat in back, but then a gang of those guys in armor in aircycles blocked the only way out. Glibur looked back and he had that disappointment look on his face. “We’re trapped!” Aravia shouted over the engines. I sighed. ‘I really don’t want to do this.’ I complained in my head. “Everyone hold on tight!” I called back. I didn’t wait for them as I took flight into the air and over the gang of aircycles. I quickly sped through their ranks as they attempted to block our path, but I rode along the buildings and climbed up until we got up to the roofs. Then they were chasing us as we went from roof to roof of the buildings.
“We can’t shake them off like this!” Agraeld exclaimed. I grinned at that thought, and Glibur knew what I was thinking as he braced himself. The acceleration kicked up at just the right moment and we drove off the roofs and into the streets. Just like I thought the gang did the same thing as well, which leads to my advantage. I quickly sped through the streets that were cluttered with trash and junk lying around, while the gang was having trouble keeping up. Unfortunately, I don’t know how much this speeder can take before it runs out of fuel. But nonetheless, I sped like crazy through the streets with minor difficulties unlike those armored people. Three of them already got dumped into a dumpster or two, unharmed thankfully. Only three more still going, but just before we got to the main highway to the ramp that lead to the 1rst District, they retreated without giving much thought. When Glibur saw that, he sighed in relief.
“Ok boy, you can slow down now.” He pleaded. I slowed to an average speed and I realized that my bleeding only got worst. “Oh my God, Cedris you’re bleeding pretty badly right now!” Aravia exclaimed. Glibur looked at my right leg and saw the gash. “When did you get that son?” Agraeld asked. I shook my head as I just got on the Main Highway. “I got it when I jumped into the speeder, I must’ve cut myself when I was falling and I didn’t realize it until after I got it running.” I explained as I battled through traffic. There was a moment of silence that fell between us. Then Aravia gently touched my shoulder. “Are you sure you’re okay?” She asked with concern. I looked at it again and the wound was worse than I thought it was. There was even a piece of metal sticking out it. I focused back on the road as I put on a brave face. “I should be alright until we get to your ship.” I said with confidence.
The rest of the way was pretty calm, and my head was kind of fuzzy and lightheaded due to the huge loss of blood. But I corrected myself to drive safely like I’ve done so many times before. We got to the Docks without any major problems, but when I tried to get out I fell flat on my face on the concrete floor. It didn’t hurt like it should’ve, but all three came to me and both Aravia and Agraeld held both of my arms and carried me away. I could hardly see anything, for my vision was completely out of focus and my arms and legs are completely numbed and it was starting to get harder to breathe. I closed my eyes as my body was being half dragged and half carried, and I blacked out.
