Kaen was getting disappointed. It had been a very long time since he'd had a really, truly decent fight. Hearing a challenge from Kubi hadn't been especially heartening. Their last fight had left a bad taste in Kaen's mouth. Partially due to the fact that although they had shared the same rank-- that of a Vice Captain, that there had been SUCH a huge gap between them. The other part was on account of the fact that Kubi had demanded Kaen to release all that battle. Demanded it. Kaen had been left feeling thoroughly disappointed that Kubi couldn't have even earned that. So Kaen did not have high hopes coming into this fight. In fact, by the time Kubi arrived, Kaen would be lazily sitting on a particularly thick branch of a tree, snacking on some takoyaki. He was in his traditional, non-conforming shinigami attire, as he seemed to patiently await Kazuko's arrival. He'd gotten the note, and now he was waiting.
Better not keep me waiting long. Kaen thought. Even Shade Kawada-- one who had beaten them in their first match, had been disappointing. Kaen wasn't looking for easy wins. One didn't improve for those. And the only reason he hadn't picked fights with Captains like Sozen or Enma, was because he knew such battles would end too quickly for him to learn anything. He was seeking opponents on his own level. Like the Noveno Espada, Asuka. Hell, maybe arrancar were all that were left to Kaen. That Myza had seemed pretty strong too. Hmmm.... or maybe Irudai? Kaen understood that Irudai was one of the strongest Vice Captains, and some rated him above even himself. Kaen could certainly get behind a round with someone like that!
But Kubi.... Kubi would have to work hard to impress Kaen today. Kaen wasn't interested in a boring fight. He'd played around last time. Today he was going to end things fast if Kubi couldn't deliver. End the fight and then move on to other things. In short. If Kubi hadn't improved from the last fight, then Kaen was going to make sure this was their shortest fight yet. So then Kubi. Entertain me if you can. He thought.
It had been weeks since the last time he and Kaen had done battle. In that time, much had changed, and not just in the makeup of the soul society. Kubi had changed; hes become a ... well, not necessarily a better person, but most certainly different. He's become stronger too, his strength and speed exponentially increasing, his mind sharpening, his body training, down to this one moment. See, Kubi is a self-proclaimed sore loser; he doesn't like to fail, ever. And to fail not once, not twice, but three times to the same man ...
Well, it was damn near unacceptable. Kubi made a noise somewhere in between a strangled tiger and an embarrassed monkey. He wasn't far from their agreed to meeting spot, a sunny glade with a single tree growing from the center. He was about fifty feet away, calming his nerves with some good old fashioned cancer. He flicked the white bud away, the red bud reminding him all too well of the reason for this fight.
He shook his head at this then stood up, ducking his large frame from behind the small shack he had taken refuge behind. "Aw, fuck. May as well get this show on th' road." He stretched then, his tensions and muscles cracking after having been cracked for so long. Desire his trepidation, he was eager for this fight. But once had Kaen even used a fraction of his full power ... But today was gonna be different.
A shunpo took him the few hundred feet to the tree which he could plainly feel Kaen on. It want like he was trying to hide, after all. And Kaen would immediately notice; Kubi was fast. Not quite as fast as some people, Kaen included, but plenty fast to exceed what most shinigami would consider a 'safe' speed. And, most notably, large. Almost a foot larger than their last meeting, in fact. How this was possible only Kubi, and a certain now-tiny Kawada knows.
"Oy, hothead! Get ya burnin' ads siren her an' let's get this show on th' road, man!" he was excited. Very much so, bouncing on the balls of his feet. They had picked a good place to fight; their was a nice breeze toying across the bare skin of Kubi's torso, exposed by the black tee unbuttoned on his chest. His sword hung on a belt, the belt covered in pockets and what looked suspiciously like different colored knives.
Huh. So Kubi was taking steroids now? Or.... something like that. He was a lot bigger. And it seemed he'd gotten faster too. Still. It wasn't quite enough to impress Kaen. After the last fight he'd have to do much better than that. "So, you're finally here." He said, sliding off the branch and landing in front of Kubi. "I hope this is going to be more interesting than last time." Kaen stated, the disappointment of their last battle still evident on his face. "Well, if you're ready, go ahead." Kaen stated. Kubi was larger than him, but Kaen showed no apparent fear, simply locking eyes with Kubi. His hands were at his sides, his zanpakuto sheathed on his back. He wasn't even five feet from Kubi now, as of dropping out of the tree. In short. Kaen was practically standing in his preferred fighting range right off the bat.
But he didn't make the first blow. He simply watched Kubi for his. The last time they'd fought, Kubi had shown clear difficulty even mustering up the willpower to launch an attack at Kaen! That had been one of the biggest disappointments to Kaen. That his opponent had struggled to even throw a punch at him. What kind of person walked into a fight with that kind of mentality? Kaen wondered. To some extent Kaen understood Kubi's expectation of defeat. Sure, there were always bigger fish. Kaen knew this to be true. But within his own rank? Kaen never went in against another Vice Captain with the expectation that there would be so much of a gap that he would lose no matter what he did. Kaen always focused on the probability of victory! And he also knew that if one could not strike, one could not overcome an enemy. So, he pondered how Kubi was going to come at him this time. Or if his adversary would simply sit back and wait for him as he had the first time. Gods, Kaen hoped not. He was deliberately giving Kubi a perfect opportunity to strike.
Kubi's smirk grew. He always loved the moment before a fight, the banter, the testosterone fueled insults, sizing the enemy up, determining the best way to strike. It was better than ... well, not sex. Maybe oral? But first things first. A single finger hooked underneath the clasp, shaped like a bear, abs tugged. The belt holding his entire arsenal crumpled to the ground. He kicked it to the tree without a second glance.
Kubi wasted no time with his normal routine of intimidation and dick waving. He's tried that before, and it didn't work. Beside, Kaen want an opponent he was going to fuck around with. Kubi didn't like going into a fight completely serious; it tended to detract from the fun. But today was a rare case.
His fist shot forward as Kubi took a matching step. It was aiming to hit his left ear and cheek. If it hit, it would be absolutely excruciating. Never, Kubi want planning on it hitting. Kaen would dodge it; or block it. Whichever he did, Kubi was ready with another shot, aimed upwards at Kaens ribcage. With Kubi's strength, it would completely crush his torso.

Hm. He threw away his belt? Interesting. Was he challenging Kaen to a strictly hand to hand fight? Kaen wondered. Or was that simply to distract him away from a hidden weapon somewhere? He'd keep his mind open to the possibility of hidden weapons, but for now, assume it to be a hand to hand fight. Kubi's first blow was targeted at Kaen's head, and Kaen was able to evade it with a simple side step. He didn't even bring up his hands, merely moving to the side. Kaen was moving at an even pace, one in which he could conserve energy if this fight proved to take longer than he expected. With his side step, Kaen slipped aside, Kubi's fist blasting through the air his head had previously occupied. Hmmm. Yeah. He'd definitely gotten faster. He wasn't nearly as fast as Kaen, of course, but he was certainly faster than the average shinigami. The follow up punch looped up towards Kaen's ribs. Shifting quickly into a low Shiko-dachi stance, Kaen's arm swept down in a Gedan Bari low block, deflecting Kubi's blow.
The next attack was like clockwork-- the clear demonstration of a movement practiced thousands, perhaps even millions of times. In a flawless, fluid motion, as Kubi's fist was deflected, Kaen accelerated a blow in return, driving a rear hand gyaku zuki-- or reverse punch, into Kubi's solarplexis. It was certainly true that Kubi was stronger than Kaen, but the gap in their strength was slight. This blow wouldn't blast a hole through Kubi, or break bones, but the solarplexis was a vulnerable point in the human anatomy, capable of winding an opponent easily, even someone slightly stronger than oneself. With their comparable strengths, Kaen expected that his reverse punch would accomplish its intended purpose if it connected.
Of course, the reverse punch wasn't Kaen's only attack. Immediately following it, Kaen moved like water, flowing off to Kubi's left, and delivering a sudden low, stomping kick at the side of Kubi's knee. Kaen could see how much Kubi had improved, but it seemed Kubi was overestimating his strength. Kaen did not expect that a simple slug-fest would get them anywhere. He was picking his targets, and hitting points of vulnerability on the body. In this case, while his kick wouldn't break Kubi's knee, it would still cause the leg to buckle, and open up further vulnerabilities to exploit. This was Kaen Youji of squad 7, the hand to hand master of Soul Society. Kubi would have to step up considerably if he hoped to compete in a bare fisted brawl, despite his own experience and mastery of his own unique fighting form.
