"Well, now, don't you think Shikai might be a bit excessive? We don't want to destroy the Cliffs of Dover."
John said with a smile. Frankly, he had been surprised that she had even suggested it, this was supposed to be a friendly spar, not a fight to the death. Releasing would make things far more dangerous, and truthfully, that was too big a risk for John. While he would enjoy the experience of sparring with her, Shikai would make it too dangerous for him, his powers weren't all that... powerful.
Well, I do have my Letzt Stil... But that would be a bit excessive...
But, now she wasn't going to do anything until he did something. She wanted him to go first. He didn't say anything, but just gave her a nod and a smile. He was in battle mode, and he didn't want to break his focus. Sword fighting was a delicate art, more intense than fighting with any other weapon. It required a concentration and stamina that most Quincies lacked. But John was determined to make up for the deficiencies which had plagued them for so long.
John changed his stance, now that he was on the offensive. A stable centre of gravity wasn't any good when you wanted to move fast. Shifting his weight onto his front foot, he turned from his original standing position into a run. He kept the sword in his left hand level across his chest, and let the other trail behind him, keeping it ready in case he needed to slash.
The front blade was really only there for protection. If Yuki tried to slash at him before he was in range, he'd parry her blow with that sword. However, if that happened, Yuki would leave herself wide open to attack from John's other blade. It would be unwise to attack him head on. So her other option was to sidestep, or at least get out of the way of his attack. If John were to sidestep, he'd go to the left, or to Yuki's right. That way, she would be at his back. It wouldn't provide her with an opening, but it would prevent John's right-hand sword from being used effectively.
So John decided to make things difficult. Instead of approaching her head-on, and slashing up with his right-hand sword, he decided to take a different approach. There were only three or two metres between them now. As his right foot hit the ground, he pushed off with it, pushing himself to the left. As he did so, he raised his right sword to guard, and dropped his left one. The switch would be sure to throw her. If she tried to sidestep the same way, she'd now be wide open to the left sword.
The plan was then to block any attacks with the right sword and swipe up with the sword in his left. Switching like this while so close was risky, but unless her reactions were way above average, it should completely throw her. John had been practicing this sort of thing for a while now, unpredictability was exactly the kind of style he was going for.
