Academy Beta: Meian and Amaya (R, DE)

Amaya's attack was quite powerful, the fireball blasting through the night air and filling the sky with its light. It soared straight into the bird that was diving down towards the two students, colliding with an explosion of sparks. There was no doubt that the Hollow went down from the attack, as it was far more powerful than the creature could take... but even in death, it was a threat to the two of them. Before the smoke cleared, the bird's flaming corpse suddenly came crashing down, smashing into the ground and sending up dirt and rock in all directions. Amaya wouldn't have time to react, her vision blocked by smoke and her body drained after such a powerful attack. Indeed, she'd find herself suddenly caught up in a roar of sound, the wave of heat from her own fireball, and the sudden crushing pressure against her body that was accompanied by absolute, but temporary numbness in her left arm.

When the mess cleared, Amaya would find herself pinned beneath the still-burning remains of the Hollow, the creature's body slowly dissolving into ash. Her back was against the stump of a broken tree, splinters jabbing into her spine, but the damage to her body was relatively minimal; she was bruised and battered, but a little rest and some of her healing skills would be enough to remove the majority of the injuries. The worst of it came when she tried to move her left arm, which was worse off than her right one that had been completely pinned, buried beneath a sea of burning feathers. With her training and practice as a medic, she'd know without a doubt that it was clearly broken in two places, one halfway up the bicep and the other at the wrist. Again, it could have been much worse considering she hadn't simply been crushed beneath the corpse of the bird, but it would be enough to cause considerable pain on movement. Thankfully, the overall numbness remained if she kept it still, allowing her to concentrate and focus.

There were a few small problems, though; with her good arm buried beneath the monstrous corpse and her bad arm difficult to move, the fact that there was a quickly-burning body and the forest itself was aflame made her situation somewhat perilous. The flames were spreading quickly, the smoke and heat rising off of them filling the clearing and making even breathing hazardous. The students needed to move the bird's body enough for Amaya to slip free, which would be difficult enough considering it was roughly the size of a large truck, and they had to do it while their breathing was obstructed by smoke and with the upcoming medic being injured. That meant Amaya had to find a trick up her sleeve to destroy enough of the corpse to escape, or Meian would have to come to her rescue.

That was where the second problem came in. Though Amaya's spell had scattered the majority of them, Meian was still being swarmed by a small pack of the smaller birds, pecking at his eyes and face every time he tried to turn to help his companion and drawing blood if his attention slipped for a moment. Several small scratches from their talons dotted his shoulders, and a single gash from a lucky beak strike cut across his forehead, leaving blood to trickle in small lines down the curve of his nose, but for the most part, he was in good condition. Still, if he wasn't careful about his situation, Meian would find his eyes to be a prime target, and an eye was not an easy thing to fix, even for Squad 4. His face and neck would be targeted besides that, trying to draw blood from him until he collapsed.

That was their situation: one was pinned beneath the corpse of a monstrous bird Hollow, her good arm trapped and her other one broken, while her companion was caught under a swarm of a good half-dozen smaller birds that attacked him from different angles every time he turned to face one. The fires were getting closer, starting to fill the clearing, and soon enough even their escape routes would be blocked. Suddenly the threat of very real death in the final exams seemed more than just a rumor, as the two found themselves in a dire situation. How would they get themselves out?

Of course, one would be a fool to think things would go according to plans. The fireball that Amaya had fired, although taking out one of their biggest concern for the moment, had brought another problem upon them; the bird continued to be a threat even after death, as its body came crashing near both students. Fortunately for Meian, the impact had left him mostly unharmed, simply pushing him away, but his friend hadn’t been so lucky; she was pinned to the ground under the hulking bird’s body, and considering the speed at which it smashed down, chances were she wasn’t in a great shape.

This was unfortunately not the end of their problems, though. As Meian regained his mind and was about to go to Amaya’s rescue, several of the birds from the previous swarm stayed nearby, determined to obtain their meal. Given the confusion and the fact that Meian was likely their first spotted target, they rushed to his location, with the obvious intent of finishing him off. Now, not only was Amaya in a tough spot, but Meian also had his own dire situation to deal with. If they didn’t speed up, time would also become a concern, as the forest was steadily being consumed by the flames.

Meian’s focus was quickly brought back to his own safety when a first bird attacked, successfully aiming at his forehead. Soon, the poor man was surrounded, forced to engage this harassing threat. Quickly gauging his situation, Meian detached his scabbard from his belt and held it with his left arm, an action which would, at least, allow him to use two different weapons against the foes around him; both the scabbard and his Zanpakutou. Despite those efforts, though, those birds still proved to have the upper hand because of strength in numbers, something which placed Meian at a disadvantage.

However, thinking this would be sufficient to take down an experienced swordsman was simply foolish. Remember what you’ve been taught; stance breaking can deal with an advantage in numbers. Indeed, this was the same trick he demonstrated, although to no avail, in a certain previous exam of his first year, which had resulted in him getting called “Meian, the Slayer of Glass”. The same trick that had been taught to him as far back as in his training to be a Sohei, and which had saved his life numerous times when he was outnumbered in the past. This was a remnant of his past life, as a samurai…

While protecting his face from any reckless beak which may use this as an opportunity, Meian ran out of the birds encirclement, making sure he wasn’t going toward Amaya to prevent the birds from changing their target. Since the birds had such a small frame, it was obvious they would be unable to restrain him between them, and the speed advantage Meian had over them meant they would be unable to outrun him. However, the young man’s sprint only lasted a second or two; as soon as he would see a bird fairly separated from the others, he’d assault, take it down in a single slash and then resume his maneuvers to separate another, continuing until none of them remained. Given that these were basic hollows simply following their instincts of hunger, which meant they lacked the ability to form complex strategies and strengthen up their formation, adapting against Meian’s strategy would likely prove to be impossible.

Once his own threat was dealt with, Meian rushed to his friend’s side, prepared to take care of the raptor’s carcass. The sight of Amaya injured this much sure didn’t sit well with him, but he simply had to ignore it for now; they could act about that later. For now, though, it was evident, from her condition, that she would be unable to do anything about her stuck arm, which meant that responsibility fell on him. ”Just wait a bit, I’ll get you out of there!” Standing up, the soon-to-be Shinigami went around the bird’s body looking for a solution when his Zanpakutou brought something up, a thing Meian truly wanted to avoid thinking about… Do you really need to help her? That girl’s just gonna hinder you now… Don’t you even think about that, Kaimamiru! I won’t leave a friend behind.

As he reached the head, though, Meian saw something which may very well be the solution to this desperate circumstance; the hollow’s mask. Recalling what he had learned in his classes, a hollow defeated by a Shinigami was supposed to be purified, which resulted in its entire disappearance. Given that this hollow hadn’t vanished as usual, this purification was therefore incomplete, which meant a slash from the top to the bottom of the mask should be sufficient to fix the problem. If Meian’s assumptions were right, the hollow’s carcass faded out as he proceeded with this plan, freeing Amaya in the process. ”Amaya, we should move! Time is critical here, so we should wait until outside these flames before patching you up. I can carry you if you need it, but otherwise, let’s go!”

Pain… everything she felt was pain. Her arm left arm was pretty obviously broken, and she was stuck on the ground. She was a bit on the completely delirious side of things after that impact, and she didn’t really register anything until she heard Meian’s voice. ”Amaya, we should move! Time is critical here, so we should wait until outside these flames before patching you up. I can carry you if you need it, but otherwise, let’s go!” The kitsune blinked a few times before asking her friend a question. ”You get the number of the plane that hit me?” She may be beaten up, but she was still close enough to in one piece that she could crack a joke or two.

Before she even began to heal herself, she had a different issue to take care of. The sheets of pinstripes were commanded to shake themselves off, and then one sheet scooped Amaya up into the air. ”I’m getting us out of here.” She didn’t have time for more jokes. The second sheet of pinstripes scooped up Meian whether he wanted to fly or not. The pair rose up into the sky above the fire and headed towards their objective for a few minutes. As they traveled, Amaya released a sheet of The Eye. She split it up into 36 individual pieces, each scanning for further incoming hollows. Nothing appeared to be chasing them. Even if some of the small ones had survived, they were slower than the 300 speed that the cloth could move at.

Once it was clear that it was safe, Amaya summoned a sheet of Red Cross, stacked up to only be a square foot. With a grunt, she straightened her broken arm out. Well, it wasn’t perfectly straight, and that was part of the issue. Because of the slight bend of her elbow, the limb was wider than a Byakurai. If she tried to increase the size, it wouldn’t have the piercing power to go straight through her arm. As much as she wanted to save her reiatsu, she needed use two. And so the Red Cross sheet moved into place above her shoulder and she fired two blasts of healing electricity through her arm. Through the slightly different angles, she guaranteed that she hit every part of the bone, healing it completely.

She was healed, and they were en route to their destination. Unless something else went wrong, they could get there safely now.

Meian's gamble worked on both accounts; not only was he able to separate the mindless, small Hollows, but he took them down with an efficiency that left him with few additional injuries on his body. A couple of small scratches and a slight tear to his uniform were nothing to rid himself of the remaining Hollows that were pursuing him, and soon they were all down. That just left freeing Amaya from her position under the large bird corpse, but that too was dealt with in short order as the Hollow's mask was slashed apart, purifying it and causing the remains to dissipate so that his ally could get free. Soon the two of them were flying above the forest, thanks to a little help from Amaya's sheets, and they were free of any pursuit. Between the two of them they had taken out the majority of the large Hollow's “flock,” and so they had nothing to fear as they rose above the trees. Well, unless they counted being visible to just about anything looking up.

Still, the trip went by relatively smoothly, leaving them without another attack as they flew about, looking for the shrine that Raion had mentioned previously. It wasn't hard to see stone structures if they rose above the trees but... despite their travel, they only saw trees, with the occasional outcropping from hills rising up above the treeline. Even with Amaya's fragmented Eye sheets keeping an eye out in all directions, there was nothing immediately visible. Was it a small building, hidden beneath the trees? Or was it simply further away than they had expected? Either way, the lack of evidence that pointed towards the existence of a building was certainly slowing down the completion of their exam.

As they were flying, however, Amaya was suddenly struck with a strange sensation. Heat, body warmth. A wet feeling. A sense of rotting carrion in her nose, ugh! The soft gurgle of fluids, the taste of decay and rancid flesh with a hint of acid on her tongue... all of it coming from one of her fragments of The Eye. And blackness; there was nothing visible to the fragment that was transmitting all of this information. A review of her other fragments would show the affected one simply vanishing from sight, disappearing without a trace. They had sensed no energy, had seen no figure... it had just simply disappeared. Was it an attack? It was not impossible, given the nature of their test but... there was nothing there, and after that, there was no further strikes.

Before they could think too long on what had just happened, Amaya would get a visual from her sensory network which would tell her that there was a stone-like structure below that seemed far too natural to be a feature of the landscape. It had to be the shrine! Buried in the trees, it was only Amaya's large array of sensory sheet fragments that had allowed her to catch sight of it at all. Still, they had found their location, and could descend down to complete this next part of their test. Obviously, finding a location in a Hollow-filled forest wouldn't be the last of it, but hopefully this was at least the second-to-last mission, leaving them to finish and graduate to become real Shinigami!

Upon landing, they would still be untroubled by foes. Perhaps they had finished this portion of the exam, or maybe they were just lucky. Either way, they landed before the structure, which was, as expected, one that descended downwards. The opening was a small tower that looked to be broken off only a scarce ten feet up, leaving the entrance open to what sunlight managed to get beneath the thick tree branches above. Inside was a small circular room, probably about fifteen feet in diameter, with a staircase leading down into the depths. The way was left unlit, so they would be forced to provide their own light, whether natural or with Kido. It was probably best not to stumble down a staircase blindly, so they would likely go in with some form of illumination.

The path spiraled downwards for a good five minutes before emerging in a large, rectangular room. The far end was just out of sight, and the walls were a good hundred feet or more away from them on either side. The ceiling was surprisingly high, easily twenty-five feet or so, creating quite a cavernous area. In the rough center of the room was a large pedestal, with steps leading up to it, and on top of the pedestal was a rolled up piece of paper in a transparent, glass-like bottle. Seeing as they hadn't been given directions by Raion as to what they were to do after they had arrived at the shrine, the bottle was as good a goal as anything. Maybe the paper contained their next direction, or maybe Raion had stuffed a diploma in there, deciding that it would be clever of him. Who knew?

Unfortuantely, there would be one thing standing between them and the bottle... a very big thing. A large Hollow, its twisted form like that of a large serpent, filled a good portion of the central area. Thick scales shimmered like steel in the light that the two students brought with them, and a thick hood like that of a cobra's flared out as the creature spotted them, tongue flickering from beneath sword-length fangs. It reared itself up high—suddenly the reason for the high ceilings was obvious—before lunging forward, pronouncing the direction of its attack with a burst of acidic poison released in a large blast from its mouth, enough to cover a good ten-square-foot area. If they dodged in time, the two would hear the sizzle of stone as the poison ate away at the base of the stairs behind them, turning it into a bubbling mush. Clearly, it wasn't in their best interests to get hit!

So now they had their next challenge: they had to get to the bottle in the center of the room, because it clearly contained instructions of some sort for their next goal, and they had to deal with the gigantic Hollow threatening to eat them. This could be done by either slaying it or simply getting the bottle and running; it was obvious that the creature would not fit up the staircase. That meant that it had been artificially planted within the “shrine,” likely as a guardian; the bottle was definitely their goal for the mission.

In addition to its stats, the Hollow possesses several key abilities; it can spit a poison (Class 4) that is corrosive, like acid, burning through the spots hit with a dissolving power equal to the user's Reiatsu Strength. This costs 50 Reiatsu per use. Its scales are also much like Hierro, difficult to cut without at least being above its Reiatsu Strength, and they are treated like a Class 3 ability in terms of superior piercing requirements. They do come with a passive cost of 100 Reiatsu/post, but are automatically activated upon combat. Finally, it has a hypnotic gaze, Class 5 in power, that reduces the victim's Instinct by 10% for every post spent looking into its eyes. This must be broken by someone else besides the victim.

((OOC: Meian gains 225 QP for defeating five “typical” level enemies, as well as an additional 1200 Ryo. Also I miscalculated Amaya's QP slightly, it should be +135 for her typical, so that's an additional 30 to her. Additionally, both students gain +75 QP for completing a Medium mission. Note that I have updated missions 5 and 6 on the first page based on my changed agenda, as well.

Also note, your goal is NOT to defeat the Hollow; you have some ability to do so with some serious finangling on your part, but you'll notice that it's set up to tank most attacks for a reason. Your goal is to get to the bottle and get out without being eaten, dissolved into mush, or crushed. Good luck!))

[Nakazawa Meian]

It seemed that Meian’s actions worked well, better than he would’ve hoped. Both his tactical motions, meant to disorient the many birds after him, and his guess about purification, directed toward the bird’s corpse which restricted his friend’s actions, had taken care of their respective problems, leaving both students with less of a burden on their hands. Maybe things were proving to get better after all? In any case, now that these were out of the way, the team could focus on the real issue, namely the rapidly expanding fire and Amaya’s injuries.

…And these were dealt with much faster than the young man could even have expected. ”I’m getting us out of here.” That single sentence announced, by itself, the end of anything that may be endangering to the team’s safety. ”W-woah!” In an instant, the young samurai was already high up in the air, much to his surprise, carried only by what seemed to be some sort of cloth. An even more surprising sight was when his friend tended to her own injuries by shooting Byakurais through her arm. What kind of strange secrets could be powering this Zanpakutou? Meian was currently in the absolute dark…

Still, the trip went relatively well. Albeit unknown to Meian, Amaya had quite a sensory surprise, but unless her reaction was decently obvious, the young man would probably not even notice it; he couldn’t do anything about it, after all. Rather, his mind was trying to figure out the inner-workings of his friend’s powers, something which was slipping out of his reach no matter how long his brain focused on it. Giving up, he finally asked, trying to understand as much as he could out of her answer. ”So, uhm… You blew up a gigantic bird, we’re currently flying, you shot at yourself to heal and now those things seems to be searching for something. Care to explain to me how this ability of yours work?” No matter what Amaya’s answer would be, he would try to understand as much as he can from what’s happening around him with it, if at all possible.

At some point, though, the group would get to land near the shrine they had heard about, thanks to Amaya’s sensory array. However, the “shrine” was rather a broken tower, with a staircase seeming to go down in the heart of the earth. No matter what this task they had to do here, it surely wouldn’t be easy; an underground battle tended to be restrictive. Still, for now, a small new problem arose, one which would hopefully be easy to deal with; light. ”Let’s not spend our energy over this.” Gathering two nearby wood branches, the young man carefully covered them in moss before setting them on fire with a spark created by rubbing the back of his sandals together, turning his creations into handmade torches. With this, proceeding in the shrine would become possible for both students, who now had to face their real challenge…

After a long walk down toward what seemed to be the center of the world, Meian and Amaya emerged in a very, very large room. So large, in fact, that Meian just couldn’t tell how large it actually was; the far end of it was clearly out of sight. What quickly attracted his attention, however, was that glass-like bottle in the middle of the room, kept on a pedestal and which seemed to contain something, too far for the man to see. This must be our target… Only problem ? A massive snake-like hollow, standing between the students and their precious bottle. It wasn’t long for it to spot them, too, as they were soon welcomed with a dash and an acidic spit, aimed directly toward them. ”Watch out!” was all that could be heard before Meian brought his friend along with him in a shunpo, out of the attack’s range.

Witnessing the damage that this last attack had caused, the young man didn’t lose a single second and quickly placed his hand on his Zanpakutou’s grip. ”Seek out, Kaimamiru!” From that point forward, his sword had turned black while the blade was now blue, signalling that he had connected himself to the senses of the snake in front of him, allowing him to foresee anything launched at them. Amaya, though, was left out of the network, to prevent her from being targeted by Meian’s actions. ”Amaya, go take the bottle, I’ll attract this beast’s attention and open the way for you… Oh, and if you’ve got anything to tell me, do it now; I won’t be able to hear you afterward.”

Assuming that Amaya didn’t try to dissuade him, Meian then distanced himself from his friend and attracted the creature’s attention with a simple blue bolt, aimed at the top of its head. ”Hado #4, Byakurai!” Given the very high resilience of the beast’s scales, such a basic attack likely wouldn’t be enough to cause any form of damage, but it probably would be enough to at least cause the snake to turn around, facing the young samurai. Meian then backed away, giving himself sufficient distance to avoid any kind of ranged attack. What he hoped, however, was that his foe would close up the distance, opening the way for Amaya to take their aim.

No matter what his opponent did, though, the young man’s goal was still simple; to get his friend to disappear from the beast’s mind. As such, while the beast was still focused on him, Meian shut down the senses which could remind it of Amaya’s presence, allowing her to move undetected. ”Gyakuten.” In a single instant, the hulking hollow would be prevented any access to his hearing and smelling, making sure that its focus would hardly be distracted toward Amaya. The only sense it had left which could possibly detect Meian’s friend easily was its sight, and that worked in Meian’s favor since it would be entirely focused on him, granting him the possibility to lead the hollow wherever he wanted. All that was left was for Amaya to make use of this opportunity, taking the bottle with her…

(OOC: Since our releases are supposed to not be perfectly mastered yet, you can consider that both the shikai’s overall and Gyakuten’s ability aren’t perfect; some sensory information from the shikai may be missing to Meian, and Gyakuten may not seal things in a perfect way, therefore allowing some information to slip through. Use that in any way you want.)

Overall, it was a fairly smooth trip towards their next objective. The bird hollows troubled them no further, and nothing else seemed to follow them either. All Amaya had to deal with beyond healing herself was a question about how her power works from her friend. ”So, uhm… You blew up a gigantic bird, we’re currently flying, you shot at yourself to heal and now those things seems to be searching for something. Care to explain to me how this ability of yours work?” Amaya couldn’t help but laugh a bit at her friend’s reaction to her power. It definitely was a lot to take in, and it’s not like she’d had time to show it off before now.

There was much that could be said about this release, and Amaya was feeling fairly chatty. ”Mmm… where to start? Uh... this is my Zanpakuto, Hibiki. I hope you guessed that much. It makes these matrices of spirit particles that interact with the environment in different ways. They have different effects based on the design on them. The ones we’re riding on amp up my Kido’s power. The one with the big red plus on it turns my Hado into healing energy instead of having it kill things… and the other one lets me see out of it. That’s a really, really, really, brief overview, but it should give you enough to go on… because one of my sheets just blinked out and I think I know where we’re supposed to be going now.”

One of the pieces of The Eye had indeed blinked out of existence. Judging by the feel and smell of it, some kind of poison or acidic attack was behind it. If she had to guess, her money was on stomach acid. The location where the piece of Reikiji was destroyed at wasn’t near her objective though, so that was a good thing. With any luck, they could avoid whatever attacked them. Once she had located the stone formation, she brought both herself and Meian down in front of it. There weren’t any enemies that they could sense right away, so the pair headed inside. It was pretty clear this was the location they were looking for after all.

They continued into the building and downwards for a bit before Meian had to stop and make some fire so they could see on the way down. The stairs wound down for a few minutes, and Amaya took advantage of the time to prepare herself a bit better. Her sheet of The Eye was repaired to be back up to full capacity, and her remaining sheets were stacked up as small squares so that they could fit down the stairs. They floated down in a block behind Amaya, ready to spread out as soon as they were needed. She was sitting on pieces from two pinstripe sheets, one sheet of the eye, and one red cross sheet, so she was ready for basically anything.

Once they got to the basement, they were almost immediately attacked. Meian grabbed Amaya out of the way with a step of Shunpo and a warning of ”Watch out!” It was enough to avoid the attack, but Amaya couldn’t see more than a few feet in front of her. The next few words her friend uttered could only be a release phrase, and he passed on some orders as well. ”Amaya, go take the bottle, I’ll attract this beast’s attention and open the way for you… Oh, and if you’ve got anything to tell me, do it now; I won’t be able to hear you afterward.” She wasn’t sure what to make of the bit about him not being able to hear, but all she could really do right now is follow through with her friend’s plan.

She waited for a few moments while her friend got the attention of the hollow, barely moving and only preparing herself while he did so. Once it was clear the hollow was focused on Meian, the pieces of The Eye wrapped around Amaya, changing her outfit into The Eye Bindings. With that, her sensory abilities were all doubled, and that meant she was now at a level where her senses were sharp enough to see despite the dim light. As she did that, she dismissed a sheet of Pinstripes and a sheet of Red Cross, forming one of Tattersall and a second sheet of The Eye instead. Once those preparations were complete, she noticed the pedestal in the center of the room thanks to her sharpened senses, and she knew what she needed to do.

Her active sheets were all divided up into thirds, and then pushed together to make three sheets that were each one third Pinstripes, one third The Eye, and one third Tattersall. They weren’t held together or anything, but they moved in unison, and that was good enough. With that, each “sheet” could sense things, defend, and amplify her attacks if needed. It wasn’t a perfect solution, but it meant she could still tell where all of her sheets were in this poor lighting, and that was what mattered. With those assembled, she proceeded to make a long wall between herself and the hollow as she made a run for the message in a bottle on the pedestal. Weary of some kind of trap, she made sure to manipulate her bindings so she didn’t step on the floor around the pedestal. Assuming she made it there unharmed, she grabbed the bottle, continued moving her wall to hide her from the hollow, and made a run for the door. If that too was successful, the sheets were then sent to (nicely) push Meian over to the stairs to indicate it was time for him to leave, and they would hopefully be able to keep him safe as well.

The two of them, after their initial surprise, immediately jumped into action once Meian had pulled them out of the acid spray. The two of them split up, careful to avoid the still-bubbling stone that hissed with the acid melting it, and Meian started to take control of the situation by bonding the Hollow's senses to his own and then removing two of them. Deprived of scent and sound, the snake paused briefly, its tongue flickering in and out a few times. Rather than lunging at the male student, however, the creature instead turned and sent a wide spray of acidic poison over its back, right where Amaya was. Having its senses of hearing and smelling negated were certainly troublesome, but Meian had forgotten that this creature possessed two other senses that would allow it to track its companion.

First and most important was the snake's sense of taste. With its tongue flickering in and out, the serpentine Hollow took in particles from the air and used its body's natural organs to “smell” Amaya's location without using its nose. This allowed it to track the kitsune's movements as she tried to hide behind a wall of sheets, and in turn those sheets would begin to sizzle and melt away under the sudden arching splash of acidic poison. They would stop the spray's forward movement until it ended, but afterward there was little left of the reikiji sheets besides mushy pulp. Amaya would find herself completely exposed, at the mercy of the snake. But even if it weren't for the Hollow's “extra sense of smell,” the creature also had its ability to detect the spiritual energy of others, a predator in every sense of the word. It was not hard to tell that the line of Reiatsu-made sheets behind it were the work of the other Shinigami, which immediately drew the serpent's attention.

As the sheets melted away, Amaya would suddenly be greeted by two golden irises that seemed to lower themselves before her. Black eyes, the eyes of a Hollow, the scelera seeming to be empty pits that threatened to swallow her whole. But the black, despite its apparent depth, was completely swallowed up by those golden slits that stared beyond her eyes and into the depths of her soul. If she did not act quickly to break that gaze before more than a second of eye contact passed, Amaya would find herself suddenly hypnotized, unable to look away. She could speak, but her thoughts would be jumbled, easily disorganized. Movements would be disjointed, more shuffling than actual steps, as she would feel drawn into the gold that hovered before her. Fangs and scales were forgotten, friend and foe lost to the control of the hypnotism; all that existed were those two golden eyes, and her ebbing ability to think, should she not be ready to counter that sudden gaze.

Meian wouldn't be left alone either, despite the fact that the head was no longer facing him; the long, sinuous body twisted about and brought the thick, car-thick coils around towards Meian, the powerful and monstrous tail lashing in his direction. If the student didn't avoid the large mass threatening to slam into him, he would find himself crushed against the wall or floor as the serpent's massive coils pressed against him with a powerful blow, the creature's sheer size combined with an exceptional amount of strength to simply flatten him where he stood, leaving nothing but a bloody pulp. It was decently fast as well, though Meian was certainly far faster, but he would be limited by the size of the room he was in; he wasn't quite in the corner, but with only the stairs behind him and walls not too far from the side the snake's coils were coming from he would have to be quick and effective in his movements.

Even if he managed to avoid the attack, Meian would also note that the snake was gazing rather intently at Amaya, and through its eyes he would see that, if she was caught by the hypnotism, her eyes seemed rather blank and vacant, her whole body seeming to go slack. If she was caught in that gaze, he could almost see the willpower ebbing out of her, moment by moment, as she stood, waiting for death to come upon her. Of course, if she hadn't been caught, it was all a non-issue, but if she was... well, Meian would be able to notice the intense way that the snake was staring at her, the focus behind the glare; the lashes with its tail and body were merely side thoughts compared to the concentration for maintaining the hypnotic gaze. Perhaps with a little work, the concentration could be broken...

Whatever Meian had tried to do as a distraction didn’t seem to be working very well. Amaya noted that as soon as she moved, the snake was after her. It fired a spray of acid at her sheets, and she couldn’t get them out of the way in time. Heck, she didn’t want to get them out of the way. It was an arced shot, so it hit the top section of the sheets. Due to the vast difference in spiritual strength, they dissolved quickly, but that didn’t mean they were made completely useless. As fast as she could, Amaya cut the sheets in half horizontally, having the bottom halves slide closer to her, and out of the path of the acid. As soon as they were clear, the sheets began repairing themselves, and within a few seconds they were back to full size.

Despite that quick thinking, the snake had maneuvered in front of the kitsune. She had been distracted for a precious moment, and that was all it needed to close the gap. The hollow was in front of her, blocking her path, and it was staring right into her eyes. Fortunately for the medic, a key distraction prevented any extended eye-contact from being made. Her friend had fired off a Byakurai aimed straight for the beast’s head. It wasn’t strong enough to do any damage, which was odd considering hollow physiology, but it still served a very useful purpose. The blast of electricity crashed into the scales of the snake and a shower of sparks cascaded through its field of vision.

No more of an invitation was needed. Forsaking her normal method of movement, Amaya darted past the temporarily disoriented beast by mentally controlling the bindings she was wearing. Her speed when moving in this way was equal to her reiatsu strength, and thus she was able to move at 300 speed. This was twice as fast as the snake hollow, so it had nearly no hope of catching her. She also put her remaining sheets back to work. They formed an angled wall in front of the snake-like hollow. It was two sheets wide at the base, with the third centered over the other two. This made it a total of 12 feet wide and 12 feet tall, but there were gaps in the upper corner sections.

The wall was faster than the beast as well, so it could keep itself between the medic and the hollow just fine. It could still attack this wall, but that had already been shown to be fairly ineffective. Amaya could easily deal with the poison spray by breaking off the infected section and regenerating the sheet from what was left behind. Since there were parts of The Eye in that sheet, she would also see any attack coming. With this increased speed, she once again made for the message in the bottle. She was flying now, superman style, so she still wouldn’t set off any pressure sensors. Again, assuming that everything went according to plan, she would then fly back out of the area with the bottle in hand, and then help get Meian out.

That hollow snake had completely ignored him! Why it did was a mystery, but what was sure was that it was after Amaya, not him; maybe it didn’t follow conventional logic, and prioritized that glass bottle over its own life? No matter what the case may be, it was obvious that of its last remaining senses, its energy sensory and tastes were the ones responsible for its ability to still pinpoint its focus on his friend’s location. I’ll weaken myself too much if I take more senses out of the way… Surely, this situation wasn’t working in the students favor, and even less in their task’s accomplishment. Meian needed to find a solution, and he needed it fast…

Fortunately, Amaya sure seemed to be able to defend herself; even though the snake had taken her in a troublesome situation and damaged her Zanpakutou’s creations in the process, she still managed to restore her sheets while getting out of the way unharmed, the snake left to follow behind another wall of sheets. Furthermore, even though it wasn’t meant for that purpose, Meian’s bolt of blue lightning had obviously prevented some sort of technique attempt, as evidenced from the reiatsu pressure he could feel pumping in the beast’s eyes. The only issue, in all this, was the realization that soon reached Meian. Its skin is thick enough to stay unharmed even against a Byakurai? With such a defense, it was no wonder that the beast had simply ignored him!

However, that hollow would soon learn that turning its back on Meian, even with such high defensive capabilities, was not a wise move at all. As its tail was threatening to slam the young man in nearby walls, he rather turned this situation to his advantage, shunpoing on top of its tail in a crouched position to maintain his balance. First lesson of the day about giant snakes; their big scales, because of the space between them, tend to provide a very good grip support. Because of this, even while it was in movement, Meian could maintain his position on his foe when needed and easily make his way toward the snake’s head, providing him with an opportunity to cause some serious damage if his opponent still didn’t give him any attention. Surely that didn’t foresee anything good for the poor guardian…

If the snake still didn’t give the man his focus once he reached its head, then Meian would unsheathe his Zanpakutou completely, ready to bring back all of its attention on him. If his assumptions were right, slashing such a hollow’s eye, which lacked any scales to defend with, would surely prove to be enough of a threat to be worth defending against. All in all, this massive snake would now be a fool to not pay any attention to this young man, since doing so could result in heavy damage. If it shifted its focus, though, Amaya would be free to take her target, which would allow them to succeed in their current objective. However, Meian knew very well that, by his actions, he was exposing himself to the hollow’s attacks, and therefore he kept entirely focused on his enemy’s senses, ready to counter any retaliation it may launch at him. Furthermore, in case things went horribly wrong… the young man still had one last card in his deck…

Amaya had gotten lucky that Meian's Byakurai had been fired off when it had; the brief surge of hypnotic power flowing from the snake's eyes had started to envelop her, drawing her near. However, it was rather hard to ignore a bright line of lightning, what with the light and the boom it made as it bounced off of the serpent's scales and into the nearest stone surface, and Amaya was instantly freed before her mind could be clouded. Not one to ignore a useful situation, she quickly grabbed the bottle and, using a wall of her sheets to aid her defense in her flight from the room, headed towards the doorway. At her speed, and with the sheets preventing the snake from getting to her, it seemed as though the kitsune would quickly escape from the room with her prize.

However, it wasn't so easy, as much as it should have been. Though the sheets prevented the serpent from reaching Amaya—a slam of its head against them once quickly quelled any further physical strikes as it impacted the Tattersall barrier and bounced off—they didn't provide any offensive utility against its bulk either. Before Amaya could reach the doorway, the snake's coils, which had already been whipping around at Meian, were blocking the stairwell, providing no space for the kitsune to get through. She would have to stop in her advance or else crash right into the Hollow's coils, which would certainly not be pleasant. It was quickly obvious that their doorway was now blocked, preventing such easy escape; what would they next?

Meian's actions didn't improve the situation, either; by climbing up the snake and moving towards its eyes in an attempt to bypass its armor-like scales, all he did was make himself more noticeable for that brief moment. Yes, an attack on the eyes would have been effective... had he not been atop a gigantic serpent Hollow that was ready to smash him against a wall with its size and weight. In fact, there was a convenient wall right in front of it as the student reached the head; though the wall was made of cloth and not stone, it was still just as sturdy thanks to Amaya's Reiatsu supporting the Tattersall portion in the middle. As soon as Meian was atop the Hollow's head, the serpent slammed its head into the cloth wall before it. If the student didn't get away or Amaya didn't move or alter her wall quickly, Meian would simply be pulped against it, squashed between two solid masses. Survival would be impossible if he simply remained.

After slamming its head against the wall, the serpent reared back again and released another stream of acid, another sideways arc that was quickly followed by a second one in the other direction. The twin streams of poison would first have to cut through the barrier that Amaya had erected, but the second stream would be coming by even as the kitsune was reforming her sheets. Evasion would be required, likely, and Meian didn't even have that protection to cover him, unless he had ducked behind the wall at some point too. The Hollow was no slouch in its rapid attacks, filling the area with bubbling, hissing stone. Stepping on the liquifying stone would be just as bad as being hit with the acid, just at the base of the feet; having one's soles melted tended to be a bad thing, after all.

So that was their situation; the Hollow was now blocking the door with one of its coils, and they had large streamers of acid coming their way, causing much of the floor around the center of the room to become almost liquid, deadly to the touch. The pedestal where the bottle had once stood was still intact, unsurprisingly; if this was indeed the exam's goal, then it was probably more reinforced than the rest of the shrine. The bottle itself was probably reinforced similarly, which meant that it would not simply be melted by the acid. Well, at least if nothing else, their objective would remain undamaged...

It seemed that the snake wouldn’t be deterred easily. The beast attempted to slam its head through Amaya’s wall of Reikiji, but the Tattersall repelled it easily. That bought enough time for the kitsune to retrieve the bottle containing the information about her next objective, but that didn’t mean she was safe or anything. Through the pieces of The Eye in her wall, she was able to see her friend running up the snake, likely in an attempt to chop its head off or something. Considering the resistance it had shown to his Byakurai earlier, that didn’t seem very likely to work. Heck, with her enhanced ability to sense energy, Amaya could tell it wouldn’t be a successful attempt. The hollow had for more power than either of the Shinigami… but it was fading fast.

Nevertheless, Amaya had to deal with the non-optimal choice her friend had made. She saw that the hollow had attempted to slam Meian up against her Tattersall, but a quick reaction prevented that from working. The top-most triple-slice simply moved backwards and out of the way. Meanwhile, the other two sections of Tattersall slid off to the side so that they slightly overlapped with the adjacent sections of The Eye. Enough of a gap was left for Meian to fit through, but it wasn’t a wide enough opening for the hollow to fit through due to its size. The result was the snake hit the Tattersall and was stopped, and her friend shot through the opening, straight at her. Inertia was fun like that.

Instinctively, Amaya braced herself and caught her friend. Still, the force of the collision was enough to send her skidding back quite a bit, but that was the least of her problems. Her senses were sharp enough, especially aided by The Eye, to tell the snake hollow was preparing another acid or poison or whatever it used to attack. While she couldn’t resist the attacks themselves, she was more than capable of stopping them from reaching either of the Shinigami… but her current pattern wasn’t ideal for that. Figuring out the actual best solution was currently beyond Amaya due to the lack of experience with her Zanpakuto, but she managed to come up with a solution that worked well enough pretty quick thanks to The Eye boosting her instinct to levels far beyond what a human could ever achieve.

The two sections of Tattersall that had blocked the snake had the middle of them filled by a slice of The Eye so that the medic could still see what was going on. The other sheets all retreated behind that six foot squared barrier. The pinstripes were dismissed, and another sheet of Tattersall was brought out. Immediately, it was cut in two foot wide by six foot tall sections, the same as everything else. Behind that first wall of Tattersall and The Eye, a second one was formed with two of the three sections from the new Tattersall sheet, and the middle section being made of The Eye. Behind that section was the third and final “sheet.” The left side was from the original sheet of Tattersall, the center was The Eye, and the right was from the new sheet of Tattersall. So long as this “seed sheet” survived, the others could be repaired from it easily enough.

This arrangement was enough to protect both Shinigami from both sprays of poison that were shot at them. The first wall stopped the first spray, and the second wall stopped the second spray. Rather than regenerating the sheets where they were, which probably would’ve been the smarter move, Amaya instead just regrew them from the third and final wall. She could keep up this defense for quite a while, but short of this hollow running out of steam, she wasn’t really sure what they could do about it. They were trapped within the room, and she could tell that without using every ounce of energy she had, there wasn’t much of a way to hurt this foe. If she did that, there was a chance she would just blow up the entire dang building, and that wouldn’t end well for anyone involved. For now, all she could do was defend.

Amaya managed to save Meian from being crushed against her wall, separating it just enough that her fellow student was thrown through the opening while the serpent was still blocked off thanks to the durability of the Tattersall sheets. The strength of the impact and the sudden inertia would probably be enough to knock Amaya onto her back despite having a fair amount of strength, simply because a grown person had been thrown at her at double the strength she had, leaving both to land on the floor. Fortunately, the kitsune's physical position had little to do with her sheets, and the wall held. Her knowledge of the scene didn't even change thanks to The Eye providing her with constant sensory input, meaning that while she was physically disoriented for a moment, and maybe lightly bruised, her mind was as sharp as ever, allowing her to be aware of her situation.

The serpent would not move away from the doorway no matter how they moved, blocking the exit with its body. It was unusually smart for a Hollow, but considering it was a creature that had been taken and then modified by Squad 12—albeit a little too well—it was no surprise that it was intelligent enough to keep them trapped. However, it also had layers of programming placed upon its thoughts, and as it began to tire, the programming began to activate. New thoughts and plans were quickly funneled into its mind, and were treated as instinct. Without question, the Hollow immediately followed the new orders given to it, rearing up tall while its lower half remained in front of the doorway, thick coils preventing any passage.

As it reared up, the serpent released another spray of acid, but this one was not aimed at the students. Instead, this spray was at the walls in a circular pattern, taking out large chunks of the supporting structure. A second, and then a third spray would be required to take down a large enough chunk of the walls to start messing up the stability of the room. Suddenly the room started to shake, the rocks sliding against one another as their support went out from beneath them. The ceiling started to rumble, and then shake, before large fragments of stone, easily bigger than the two students together, started to crash down. Fortunately Amaya had her Tattersall wall up; it could protect them from the stones raining down on them. All she'd have to do was put it above them, and they'd be fine.

Or would they? As the rocks started to rain down, the serpent released another spray of poison at the two students, either splashing the wall that had been protecting them or, if the wall had already been moved, the students themselves. There was only time for one spray, but it would completely coat their area if they did not defend against it, and that was while rocks were raining down atop them. Of course, the Hollow wasn't immune to the rockfall either; several large boulders bounced off of it and caused it to sway from the impact, but its scales protected it from severe harm. They didn't protect it from being buried in rubble, though, and soon the majority of the shrine collapsed inwards, burying those wtihin if they did not act quickly.

Amaya had underestimated how fast Meian had been moving, and her attempt to catch him resulted in her being knocked over. Not fun. She had more to worry about than a little thing like being knocked over though. The hollow hadn’t ceased its attacks, but the kitsune was smart enough to know that she wasn’t in any immediate danger. The sprays of acid weren’t aimed at her, and thus she had time to get back up safely, and stand in front of her friend. She was also sharp enough to figure out exactly what it was trying to do though, as she had just finished debating that option with herself. This hollow was attempting to bring the whole building down, and that was a problem, but not a huge one.

The hollow was facing someone far more intelligent than it was, and her mind was hyped up thanks to the stimulus from The Eye. With her absurd instincts, devising a countermeasure to some falling rocks wasn’t that hard. One sheet of Tattersall was left in front of her as a precaution, but the other sheets were all on the move. The Eye and the second Tattersall both zoomed around her. The Eye positioned itself beneath Meian, preparing him for another magic carpet ride. As for the second Tattersall, it came between the two Shinigami to protect Meian from the power that Amaya had prepared. There were probably better plans than the one she had in mind, but this one had a higher probability of success.

Chunks of rock streamed down from the ceiling, but Amaya waited for a very specific moment to fire off her counter. She wholly ignored even the last attack from the hollow. Then it happened, the moment she was waiting for. A section of the ceiling was finally going to hit one of the Shinigami, and that was when she released the 53rd Hado. A wave of pure force erupted out from her body in every direction at once. Because the attack was omnidirectional, it had many results. Directly in front of her, and directly behind her, it impacted the Tattersall and was simply stopped, as her own reiatsu strength wasn’t high enough to destroy her own defenses. Of course the Tattersall in front of her was being melted by acid, but there was still enough to stop most of the force going in that direction.

What was truly useful was what happened in the other directions. Directly above the medic, all the rocks were blasted upwards at 600 speed. The excessive speed was attributed to her mastery of this particular Hado, coupled with her (for an academy student) exceptional reiatsu strength. That made a large opening for the students to escape through. There was no longer much of a building left since Amaya had waited so long to cast her Hado, and the flying rocks blew whatever was left out of the way. Normally, Hado 53 couldn’t blow up a building, but if you let it send some boulders flying then it has enough oomph to get the job done. Still, there was one last part of the Hado; the downwards force. As was oftentimes seen as a downside to this technique, the force bounced off the ground and sent Amaya skywards, just behind the wave of force that was clearing a path for her. With her mental control over the Reikiji, the other sheets followed her out, save for the one lost to the acid, and Meian was brought safely in her wake.

With that one spell, she had defended against all the rocks and given both Shinigami a hasty exit from the shrine. Safely hovering in the sky above the now ruined building, all that was left was to pop open the bottle and read the message within.

(OOC: Sorry for very short post, but given that all I have is reactions and no actions, it could hardly be longer. Also, this post is almost entirely significant Character Development, through thought processes.)

Meian’s plan couldn’t have went any worse; not only had it not helped at all, but it even uselessly risked his own life and indirectly forced Amaya to intervene. Fortunately, doing so didn’t prove to be much of a challenge, since the very threat to Meian’s life was Amaya’s power itself, over which she had full control. Still, some severe damage had resulted from this, although not on a physical level; his pride had been greatly harmed. Was his powers truly so weak that, even in front of such a small fry, his life was endangered? Had he not learned to fight for this very moment? For a past warrior of pride and honor, this was far worse than any injuries he could’ve received as a result of this battle…

Trouble wasn’t near its end, though; as soon as the young man started to get a hang on what was occurring around him, their foe changed its strategy, trying to take down the whole structure they were in. Large boulders came crashing down, threatening to put an end to the lives of those poor souls. However, in front of such a situation, a frightening truth came to Meian’s attention; There’s no way a simple sword can fight against any of this… . After all, when compared with fireballs, acid and crumbling roofs, a katana could easily feel as nothing more than a lump of iron, ready to be annihilated at any moment. Anxiety started to kick in as the swordsman realized just how much his skills were countered; in a world where magic was at its full potential, a sword simply didn’t have its place anymore. Fortunately, Amaya somehow managed, through an efficient use of what she knew, to deal with their troublesome situation, but Meian would eternally stay marked by how crippled his swordsmanship truly was, in this world where he didn’t belong…
