This is a thread with Rave Haretsu, Squad 8 Captain, and Kubi Tsure, Squad 13 Captain. Both are responding to a rather large reaitsu signature deep in West Rukon. Rave and Kubi are the two nearest captains to the West Rukon, so they were dispatched. They are alone. However, the reaitsu signature ends in West Rukon 56th, the birthplace of Kubi. All RPC's are Class 1, max stats, etc etc.

Rave walked down the street next to the captain of Squad 13. This wasn’t Rave’s ideal past time, but it was his job. He would approach the assignment with the utmost seriousness as he partnered with Captain Kubi for this mission and hopefully they could take care of the problem quick so he could get back to his squad quickly. He’d left his copy of Skyrim on pause and was eager to finish the quest he was on, but business came first and he forced himself to follow his counterpart to West Rukon 56th district. Apparently there was some type of reiatsu signature here, but Rave couldn’t feel anything. He reached up to the side of his head without a word as soon as they arrived and pressed a button on his large earphones. Immediately his visor began scanning everything in the area and telling Rave their power levels. It was this way that he was able to find out the exact value of Kubi’s spiritual pressure and reiatsu strength, but that’s not what he was interested in. Somewhere around them there was supposed to be a strong source of reiatsu, but Rave’s scanner was picking up nothing.
“Odd... he said pressing the button on the side of his bulky earphones again, “There doesn’t seem to be anything here... What are your thoughts?” Rave turned and looked at his partner, his dark green eyes quietly observing him with slight distrust. However, Kubi would not see the soul reaper’s suspicious eyes as they were completely shielded by a dark purple visor that ran from ear to ear in front of the shinigami’s face. The captain’s hair blew in the wind as he awaited for a response from his fellow captain. He was honestly surprised that he was selected to preform an investigative task such as this. Usually such a mission would be given to Squad 7, for they dealt with internal affairs, yet here he was.
The Captain of Squad 13, Kubi Tsure, had his hands in his modified shukahusho, as casual as if he was going to a sunday brunch. His captains haori - modified so that it was cut several feet shorter and had no sleeves - matched his black shikahusho, which now resembled a T-shirt and shorts. Dark, intelligent eyes peered out from chiseled features, scanning the horizon for a hint of the spiritual pressure. Around him, his reaitsu swirled, dark and terrifying. All residents of the current area were inside, studiously avoiding the strange soul reapers. So little has changed ... His face still studiously blank, he surveyed his surrounding, acting as if he was searching the area. In reality, he was searching for a hint of his childhood haunts. A sudden voice shocked him out his revery. “There doesn’t seem to be anything here... What are your thoughts?” He glanced over at Rave Haretsu, the Squad 8 captain, his partner for this particular mission. They were the only ones available at that moment to handle something like this. Kubi, ever the man of few words, just shook his head slightly as his answer.
He glanced towards Rave. Here was a mystery, to Kubi. No history existed for him, as far as Kubi could tell. In the last thousand years, he wasn't in the West Rukon ... Kubi would know. So then, what was he, and why was he a shinigami? Everyone had there reasons for joining; for some, its about saving lives. For Kubi, it was about being bored, and keeping the balance in check. But for Rave .... he couldn't grasp his reasoning. Another glance at him, and Kubi, his demeanor still as casual as ever, said, "Why ... did you became a shinigami?" His voice was deep, both terrifying and charismatic at once. It was a voice of authority, a voice that was used to being obeyed.
At first Kubi didn’t respond to his question, and only stared at him for a moment before shaking his head. What was up with Captain Tsure? It was a simple question. What was he possibly getting out of keeping his observations to himself? Surely there was nothing here for them to sense, so why couldn’t Kubi just communicate with him normally? Rave was a tad annoyed that Kubi wasn’t sharing what he sensed with him, but the source of his frustration was likely rooted in the fact that he couldn’t sense reiatsu himself. This was annoying for Rave and the lack of teamwork that Kubi was demonstrating wasn’t making things any easier. He just wanted to get back to his room so he could continue blasting techno music and playing video games.
“Why did you become a shinigami?” asked Kubi from out of nowhere. What?” thought Rave as his brow narrowed and his lips pursed in confusion, “Well just forget the mission and ask pointless questions then, huh?” Rave thought for a second about what to say back to the shinigami. He couldn’t very well tell him the truth now, could he? Rave Haretsu was an ex-convict and had been sentenced to the Maggot’s Nest before he’d become a captain. His crimes were very famous, and Kubi would likely remember the economic crisis that Soul Society had dealt with many decades ago. The root of it was Rave Haretsu, the con man who had single-handedly scammed billions of ryo out of Seireitei and sent the entire system into a complete standstill for a few years.
In truth Rave had become a shinigami because he still possessed the same greedy personality traits that he’d had as a con man, however now that he’d been caught once Rave determined to seek his fortune the legal way. Rave was truly only in it for the benefits and payment, but he couldn’t tell this to Kubi. No... Not at all... He needed to come up with a suitable lie that seemed somewhat noble and believable. “My older brother... He was a shinigami who was killed by arrancar... I only want to follow in his footsteps and avenge his death. I want to make him proud,” lied Rave with a suave, believable tone. All his years spent as a con man had given him the necessary skills to make anyone believe any lie he fed them. Rave’s charisma was through the roof.

My older brother... He was a shinigami who was killed by arrancar... I only want to follow in his footsteps and avenge his death. I want to make him proud. Of course, Kubi believed him; not through any fault of his own, of course. But through his millenia of his existence, he simply was never up to date on current events. So of course, he wouldn't know that Rave was actually a conman. He would have no way of knowing. Kubi nodded slightly, moving his head no more an inch in each direction. Suddenly, he stopped, his head cocked at a sudden sound. It was the sound of ... twinkling pans? For the first time, Kubi showed a hint of emotion, his eyes widening slightly larger than normal. He set off with a renewed gait, heading off into a complicated series of sidestreets and alleyways. After about two minutes, they came out into a sort of shopping center. It was dominated by a large cafe, taking up one full side of the square. Kubi grinned slightly, a slight twist of the lips, and set off for it.
When he reached it, he sat down at one of the tables outside and grabbed a menu. It seemed to be one of the higher class restaurants in the West Rukon ... relatively speaking. A waitress came to take there order. Fries. And ... Sushi. Quite the odd combination, but what the heck? When she left, Kubi turned towards Rave. Your brother ... who .. was he?

Rave smiled slightly as he adjusted his visor. Even if Kubi was aware of the events that plunged Soul Society’s economy into chaos decades ago, he wouldn’t have been aware it was Rave that was responsible. The entire scandal was dealt with quietly and only a select few knew of the captain’s questionable past. Kubi stopped in his tracks just before he was about to speak, his eyes widened as he turned his head towards some unidentifiable noise. Without a word the captain took off, walking speedily towards the clanging sound. Rave blinked a few times in surprise as he watched his partner simply abandon him. Perhaps Kubi had picked up a tidbit on what they were looking for.
Rave decided to follow his fellow captain after a second or two and was confused when Kubi lead them to a shopping center. As much as Rave loved relaxation, they were on a mission. He couldn’t seriously be considering simply blowing off the current assignment, right? Wrong. Kubi grinned and made a beeline for the large cafe that dominated the district. A sigh emitted from the captain as he gave in and joined his comrade at the table he’d selected. Without a word Rave picked up the menu looking it over for a few seconds before closing it and putting it on the table in front of him. He didn’t have any money on him. How would he pay for anything? Oh well, he’d figure it out. He was an ex-conman after all.
It wasn’t long before a waitress came by to take their orders. She was quite attractive and had long knee socks with and a slender physique. Her eyes were blue and she had long, braided brown hair. “Are you two ready to order?” she asked as she took out a small notepad and a pen. “Fries. And ... Sushi.” said Kubi as she wrote down his order. “Alright, and for you?” she said, turning to Rave with her pen ready. “Hmmmm... Choices, choices... What do you recommend?” asked the captain to the waitress with a pleasant smile. “Oh, um... Well, the soup today is the wonton and the sushi is good...” she said as she looked at Kubi. “No no... The sushi is what he likes. Tell me, Shimizawa-san...” he said reading off her name tag, “What do YOU like to eat?” Even though Rave was being a little pushy, he seemed to have some sort of allure about him that made it all okay. He had a face that was easy to trust, even if it was hidden behind a purple visor.
Shimizawa brought her hand to her lips as she thought, “Um... I like the chow mein...” Rave smiled as he adjusted his glasses. Finally something he could use, “Then the chow mein is what I shall order, Shimizawa-san” Rave handed the waitress his menu and she smiled as she took them and walked back towards the kitchen. Rave’s cocky grin remained on his face as he turned towards Kubi. As his eyes met with the other captain’s Rave’s eyebrows elevated themselves twice in succession, communicating to Kubi that he thought the waitress was attractive. “Hook, line, and sinker...” said the captain as he took a sip of the water that had been set before him, “Now I just have to reel her in...”
Kubi continued to more serious conversation as they waited for their food. “Your brother ... who .. was he?” asked Kubi with a serious tone. This was annoying. He was asking questions about that lie that Rave made up to get him off his back. Oh well, he’d thought and prepared for such a scenario. The captain adjusted his visor as he spoke, “Oh... I’d, I’d rather not talk about it... But how about you? Why did you become a soul reaper?” Rave didn’t really care, but he had to pretend to be interested to keep the topic of conversation away from himself. Rave didn’t trust people due to his own history and mistakes. Rave had ruined any hope he had to trust people by tricking countless victims out of their money, and in some cases, their life’s savings. No... Rave would not trust anyone that could breathe.
Hook, Line, and sinker ... now all i have to do is real her in! A quick flash of anger flitted over Kubi's face as his fellow captain raised his eyebrows suggestively at him , and a flare of reaitsu made everyone in the vicinity pale and gasp with fear. He hated those who treated women as nothing more than a quick fuck. A quick eyebrow twitch, and he was back under control. In answer to his question, Rave said, Oh... I’d, I’d rather not talk about it... But how about you? Why did you become a soul reaper? Kubi's face became, if possible, even more still than before. However, a depth grew to his face that wasn't there before, as if lost deep in memories. He sat like that for a minute, then suddenly, his face hardened almost imperceptibly. He relaxed back into his normal, calm persona and ignored Rave's question.
After several minutes, the food arrived. Kubi gave no indication of the food arriving, other than quick nod. Absentmindedly bringing fork to mouth, he was lost deep in thought, staring at an alleyway on the far side of the center. Of course, most people wouldn't know the difference, being as how he is always withdrawn and distant. But, this was different; there was actual emotion on his face, however slight. Pain, and something else ... loneliness? Yes, that was it. Loneliness, as if the sight of the emptiness of that alleyway brought a pain that he hadn't felt in years. Which, in fact, was true. He slowly twirled his free hand around the guard of his zanpakutou, fingering it's edges.

Rave noticed the flash of anger that graced Kubi’s face for only a moment. Anyone who was non-observant would have missed it completely, but not Rave. The captain, being one of the greatest conmen to ever live, was well versed in the intricacies of psychology and he possessed knowledge that would baffle the average doctor in the field. “Is Kubi-san jealous?” thought the captain, trying to piece together the other shinigami’s mind, “Doubtful... It didn’t seem like he knew the woman, so why the anger? It must be something I did. Perhaps he was offended by the inappropriate timing of my flirtatious behavior... Or maybe he has some type of chivalry complex...” Rave sat, thinking for a minute as he waited for his fellow captain to respond. Judging by his face, Rave determined that there must be something that Kubi was remembering. Oh how he would love to sit his fellow captain down and delve into the inner workings of his brain. He’d find out every issue that the captain went through and discover just what made him tick. Such information was useful down the road when Rave needed something.
Rave’s cocky smirk didn’t disappear as the food arrived. He didn’t even pay attention to the waitress that he’d made a point of breaking the ice with. He now had something new to keep his attention. As he pulled his own set of chopsticks out from his coat he kept his eyes glued on the other captain. The visor kept Kubi from seeing where Rave was looking as he ate. Was Kubi purposefully ignoring his question? Rave knew this kind of person well. He had a calm, serene, and quiet type of personality. People like this were often hard to get to open up. It didn’t mean it was impossible, but Rave didn’t feel like pressing right now. Even for the best con man, it was nearly impossible to completely gain someone’s trust in a single meeting. He’d worry about that later. Right now, Rave was concerning himself with what Kubi was doing with his free hand. The other captain’s hand had found its way to his zanpakutou and he seemed to be fiddling with it as he looked into a nearby empty alleyway. Did he something? Was it the power source they’d been looking for earlier?
Rave glanced in the alley’s direction with his eyes, careful not to tilt his head to reveal where he was looking. After taking a few bites the captain tried to get Kubi talking again. “I get it... Not a story you want to go into... That’s fine...” said the soul reaper, “But tell me this much... What do you hope to accomplish as a soul reaper? Surely you have goals that you are trying to reach. Or is this it? Have you already gotten your wish?” Rave was comfortable when other people were talking instead of him. This gave the captain a chance to understand the other person’s psyche completely before he talked to them.
