Renji has brown eyes and long crimson hair, which is usually kept in a high ponytail. His upper body is covered in tribal tattoos, which have increased over time, starting from his early days as a Shinigami candidate to covering his entire back and much of the front of his body and his extremities. He wears a standard Shinigami outfit, though he usually includes some sort of headgear, usually expensive glasses or a white headband when he is saving up to purchase some new glasses. While out of uniform, Renji often wears a white kimono-like type of night clothing, with pink floral patterns on it, and a dark grey sash tied around his waist, with bandages underneath. It has also been said 'that the women within his Division do not mind that he usually walks around in his night clothing'.
He was obviously very expectant of what could happen here. His Zanpakuto was drawn and out, and yet it was not yet released. Whatever was going to happen, Renji was certainly planning on fighting this random challenger. Of course, the challenger would conveniently never remember this happening, but still. It was going to be a fun battle for the both of them.
Kaen grinned in answer to Renji, but did not draw his sword. "Yare yare. I suppose I would be." He commented, sliding one leg back, and bringing his arms up in a Karate fighting stance. "I'm very curious as to the weight of a Vice Captain's sword. Please educate me, Abarai-san." Kaen taunted with a teasing smirk. He hadn't yet drawn his sword, and why should he have. Kaen was primarily a hand to hand fighter. He preferred his fists to his blade, and even when he did draw his sword, he preferred to open with an iaido strike rather than simply drawing and slashing aimlessly!
"Well! Let's try to make this a fun match!" Kaen proclaimed sliding closer to Renji, still in his stance. Ichi...... One step. Ni.... san.... Three steps now, and Kaen was standing only a single step beyond the reach of Renji's blade. His eyes went up to meet Renji's, and then, as if in challenge, Kaen used Karate's shuffle step to take the final step forwards into Renji's attack range. Show me your strength! Abarai Renji!
Renji's left foot slid back across the ground, drawing gravel up as this happened. They were in the middle of some sort of courtyard area, with a stone floor of rippling design patterns. There were buildings to random places surrounding them. This was of course simply a random meeting place within the Seireitei. His eyes gleamed with an absolute focus as he drew his foot back, his Zanpakuto held in his right hand. His left palm just at the hilt as he observed Kaen. A grin lit his face as the sun shone overhead, reflecting out of his eyes to make them glean. It matched well with the black tattoos across his face. His robes billowed with the wind, and it was noticeable that he did not wear his Vice Captain badge.
"Howl, Zabimaru!" Renji declared. Immediately, he ran his left palm across the length of the blade, and it transformed, becoming a large, and lengthy blade, sectioned at over eight places. It had sticking out metal grooves and additional rectangular blades along each section. It looked like it would hurt terribly to get slashed by that weapon. Good thing it was close range. Or not. Kaen, even though he was in close range, was not someone that would be particularly immune to the weapon. He was rushing at Renji just as Renji released. This didn't allow him time to release, unless he stopped and did so, or slowed and focused his reiatsu. If he did anything of the sort, he'd be wide open to Renji's incoming attack.
Renji jumped backwards, up into the air as he slashed at his adversary. He slashed directly at Kaen then. "LET'S DO THIS, ZABIMARU!" he declared. His blade extended instantly, becoming several meters longer. It snaked like a fluid towards Kaen, crashing down at his left shoulder while he was recklessly running forwards. The blade had extended, aiming to slash Kaen right there. Essentially, if he got hit by Renji's blade, it was going to slash across his chest, and then retract back to Renji, sliding each sticking out part across the already open wound, cutting and injuring it further, and forcing even more pain and bleeding. Renji actually had a rather devastating physically based weapon for his release. He wasn't an easy opponent.
Kaen grinned, seeing the light of battle in Renji's eyes. This was going to be fun, and Kaen matched the same fighting spirit that Renji showed, in his own eyes. Two brawlers simply whaling on each other. This was gonna be great! But as he heard Renji's declare his release phrase, Kaen drew his zanpakuto from its scabbard. He wasn't rushing at Renji. His steps have been careful and methodical, gradually closing the distance. Kaen didn't know much about his opponent, and hadn't wanted to walk into a trap. And a good thing too. Otherwise, he may well have been struck by Renji's attack!
Kaen saw Renji's blade extend rapidly. So that's it! A physical type zanpakuto. Just like dad's huh? He thought, slamming his blade upwards, as it crashed against the falling blade, deflecting it to the left, away from his shoulder. Just to be safe, Kaen had used a two handed swing to deflect it. He didn't know how powerful Renji's blow was, but was relieved to find it had not been quite as fierce as he had feared. Nonetheless, there had been considerable force behind it, and the force of the blow, as well as the considerable range of it, pushed Kaen back a step, as he attempted to move beyond the sweetspot of the weapon. Kaen had noted the long points on each segment of blade, and realized that it was possible that Renji would attempt to use them to attack Kaen from behind.
And what if this weapon had other tricks. Ugh. This would be a difficult weapon to fight again. Kaen needed a plan of attack quickly. But he realized, against such a weapon, closing the distance wouldn't be easy. Looks like I may have to release Hachiryuu sooner than expected.... He realized.
Renji's blade reared up as he snaked it after the initial first block, taking a step forwards so a lower portion of it would be facing Kaen at that time. He brought it crashing down, snapping down on Kaen. His goal was of course to slice deeply into Kaen starting at the top of his head. In this case, it gained much more momentum and more power. This blow would be a lot harder to block than the previous one. There could be no doubts that Renji was a strong opponent. His blade retracted instantly, whether or not it hit. However, if it did hit, it dragged the prongs up through Kaen, injuring him further. Well, actually he'd probably be dead if that attack hit. However, even if he managed to block it, one of the prongs would do its job.
This one prong would be able to drag across Kaen's cheek just a ways, taking on one drop of Kaen's blood. It was a strong weapon, but of course a Captain's release was probably far more fearsome. Typically, it seemed that those with a physical release were the ones with the scarier physical ability and skill, but ultimately were weaker than those who had really unique powers. Renji, one could tell, had been a part of Squad 11. Only someone from Squad 11 would have a Zanpakuto with the type of power that Zabimaru did. One could only hope that there were no other hidden tricks to that thing. If it had anything hidden, it could of course represent a very great problem for Kaen, who was trying to keep with and fight Renji.
