"Would you feel some sort of honor or self respect if you died in this way? By dying in battle, do you feel it is more honorable than normal? This is foolish." Kuroi said in response to Rio. "Glory is for the living. Dead is dead. It doesn't matter how you die. There's no glory in being killed, nor is there glory in dying in general. In death, there is nothing at all. Legacies, hopes, and dreams become nothing but ways to keep your name living. A name is meaningless without someone to possess it. When you're done living, all that you leave behind is a corpse to rot." Kuroi sheathed his Zanpakuto slowly, ignoring his destroyed arm. Blood dripped onto the sand from that arm, which probably would eventually fall off, too. Kuroi was aware that the arm was beyond saving. Later, he'd have to cut it off and grow a new one or something. Only a powerful healer could save his arm.
Kuroi turned, his eyes glancing back at Rio. "I have not destroyed you in such a way to destroy your spirit. Nor will I choose to kill you. You proved that you're strong enough to exist in the Espada. Your death would just be harmful to our grouping. Being unable to strike me is obvious, considering the strength difference between us. Worlds of power separate you and I, just as worlds of power separate Espada from their Fraccion. If you live, you will be an asset. Your strength is something worth sparing. When you die, it won't be me that kills you, but a Shinigami you meet in battle during this timeless war of ours." If Rio thought about it, he'd probably be able to confirm the truth of Kuroi's words. No one was invincible or immortal. In war, sooner or later, everyone eventually met someone better. In the case of Espada, who typically fought to the death against such hated enemies as the Shinigami, meeting someone superior would lead to destruction.
It was absolute. Rio would definitely one day meet a Shinigami much more powerful than him, and would lose his life. The same was probably true of Kuroi. However, Kuroi spoke as if he'd already met the one whom he knew would take his life one day if he fought him seriously. It was true, actually. Kuroi had met a certain Captain. Squad 7's Captain, Enma. He was aware that in truth, Enma was probably at his level, or stronger. If Kuroi and Enma fought seriously, it was guaranteed that one or both of them would die. Kuroi's death by Enma was not guaranteed specifically, but if he couldn't kill Enma, then Enma would kill him. Put simply, one of them was going to die. Kuroi would fight for his life when that happened. He'd fight so that he could best Enma and survive, so that he could win. He knew, though. If there was any Shinigami that would kill him, it could be only Enma. That was the only one capable of doing so in the Gotei Thirteen. All others were guaranteed to fail, one way or another.
A black line formed in the air, tearing itself open to create a huge, screaming Garganta. Kuroi stepped into it. "I'll send someone for you later." he said at last. "This is a chance for you to test yourself, after all. Survive there for an hour in your present state." Kuroi's Garganta abruptly closed behind him, ending the contact between the two Espada. Kuroi felt himself growing stronger from his experiences. He'd been getting even stronger at an even faster rate ever since he'd run into that human, Nishiru Tokoheita. That man had defeated Kuroi. He'd been undefeated for years until then, when he'd met someone who was that far above him. Kuroi didn't make it a goal to defeat Nishiru, for the man had given him good advice in terms of gaining strength. Despite this, Kuroi was growing weary. The rankings in the Espada were soon going to shift. He could feel it.
