Kaen stood in the middle of the training grounds, looking at a number of wooden targets. Sweat rolled down his brow from exertion. Many of the wooden targets had exactly two holes punched in them. Kaen was gritting his teeth with some frustration. Senka was proving a little more difficult to get the hang of than he had thought. Striking the necessary points whilst in mid-Shunpo was actually quite a challenge. But he was persevering!
Kaen had no talent at Kido. None whatsoever. Hell, his type wouldn’t even let him learn it. So all Kaen could really train was his physical combat. Today he was working on Hoho. Hachiryuu was in his hands, the Kodachi’s blade glinting brightly in the sunlight. Okay. Let’s try this again. The third seat entered Shunpo, his blade striking with unerring accuracy, striking his target’s Saketsu, but missing the Hakutsui. ”Ugh! Come on…. You gotta be kidding me…” Kaen muttered irritably. He glared at his next target. And then slammed the hilt of Hachiryuu into his head.
”No. No. That’s not right. Not right. I need to stay calm. I need to stay focused….” Kaen reminded himself. And then he smiled. ”I know! I’ll work on Shunpo a bit.” Kaen was relatively good at Shunpo, but knew that his mastery over it could be better than it was. There were many captains with a superior mastery of Shunpo than Kaen. No better place to start than this! It’d also help him calm down and relax a bit, to work at something he could already do, and try to improve it.
Kaen kicked off the ground into Shunpo, making his target a nearby building. He emerged from the Flash Step at the building’s corner and turned around. He saw where he had started and aimed for the next point in the distance. Bam. He was there instantly, yet again due to the prowess of Flash Step. He spun around again, this time trying to use the technique even faster, and aiming farther. ….And succeeded. Kaen grinned to himself. This is going well. Kaen continued launching his Shunpo. Each time he used it, he tried to push himself a little farther, and to kick into Shunpo a little faster.
Finally, he stopped with a sigh. ”Yosh! That was good practice! Alright. Now. Senka…” Kaen murmured as he approached the practice dummies again. His Shunpo training had tired him a little, but it had also helped him recollect himself. Kaen focused his attention entirely on what he was doing. He launched himself into Shunpo, and felt his blade impact the target. He turned to look at his handiwork, and saw that he had hit the Hakutsui and missed the Sakaku by little more than a hair. That was encouraging! Alright! Again! Kaen recollected himself and pointed himself at his next target, launching his blow.
This one was a little farther off, but still much closer than his earlier attempts. Third time’s the charm, right? Kaen thought to himself as he launched himself into yet another Senka attempt. Third time’s the charm indeed. Kaen hit both marks with precise and perfect accuracy in a single strike. Kaen grinned excitedly, like a child in a toyshop. ”Alright! Next!” Kaen launched himself at his next target. Another perfect Senka. And again. And again.
Kaen continued performing the technique, until he simply collapsed in exhaustion, deprived of his strength and reiatsu. His kodachi clattered to the ground beside him, as Kaen’s eyes flickered around to look at his handiwork. He’d missed the attack on some of them, but on nearly all of the targets after his first success, he’d performed Senka properly. About an 87% ratio, he’d estimate. And wow. That made him pretty damn happy. Kaen grinned happily at this. ”Alright! Now, after I get my strength back, another fifty repititions!
….Oh boy.
