(ooc: CTP training thread)
Kaen had once more returned to the training grounds used by shinigami in the seventh division. He appeared to be warming up, performing a series of pull ups using the branch of a nearby tree. He wanted to be well prepared, as it wasn't everyday he got a chance to train with a Vice Captain, let alone the one of his own division. He had tremendous respect for his Vice Captain, understanding how hard she'd had to work to earn her position, and in the few times he'd seen her in combat, he'd been impressed by her considerable skill with a blade. Having a chance to train alongside someone of such skill seemed a priviledge to Kaen.
He'd had precious few discussions with Rin but he found her character quite intriguing to him. He couldn't quite put his finger on it, but he was both amused and interested by her insistance on upholding herself as though an empress. After hitting the fifty mark in his pull up drills, he stopped, grabbing his zanpakuto that he had rested on the trunk of the tree and headed out into the middle of the training grounds to await his Vice Captain. He himself had come fairly early to warm up, but he highly doubted that Rin would allow herself to be late to anything.
Our favorite Squad 7 Vice Captain was fanning herself with her coveted fan as she walked over to the training grounds. It was a rather hot day and a sweaty empress was not a pretty one. That and she liked fanning herself, it was such a strange habit of hers. Enma-taicho wanted her to stay inside and finish her paperwork buuuut...there were two problems. One being that there was mountain of it. She had Mount Everest sitting on her desk and that was a daunting sight to the mock empress shinigami. Two being that her sake stash that she normally kept under her desk was done. She needed to replenish that. No sake and paperwork meant Rin running away from said duties. Rin was just extremely lazy.
Well, there was a third thing...but she wouldn't call that a problem. The third seat Kaen Youji wanted to train! Now Enma-taicho can't pull out that damned stuffed bunny of his and chase her back into that prison known as her office. Ne...Seriously! Why does he keep that thing with him!? He knows she's afraid of that animal! Ugh...so frustrating. She made a point to be on time. Rin eventually got there and she'd see the thrid seat sitting against the trunk of a tree. "Hello Kaen-saaan~" she smiled accompanied with a small smile. "You're early, ne?"

Kaen smiled brightly as he saw Rin approach. She was more than identifiable from a distance, her empress-like garbs making her stand out from virtually any other shinigami. Kaen cracked his neck and approached Rin as she came, bowing respectfully to her. "Rin-fukutaichou. You're right on time~" He replied. Some part of him found it ironic that he was the one who initiated the bow to her. No doubt it was the aspects of his noble heritage that his parents had impressed upon him when it was young, but he still found it ironic that a child of a noble family was the one bowing so low to someone who wasn't-- but acted as though she was. Though, it was probably that irony that caused Kaen to enjoy the company of his Vice Captain. The two of them seemed at completely opposite ends of the spectrum in all aspects, and yet it was likely partially because of that that Kaen took no issue in serving under Rin.
That, and her prodigious skill of course.
In reply to her comment about him being early, Kaen merely shrugged. "I decided that if I was to be training with my esteemed Vice Captain, I should be well prepared by the time she got here." He replied, poking just a little bit of fun at her. "You look stunning today." He complimented with a wry smirk. Kaen was something of a casual flirt, feeling quite happy to drop such comments without any concern of reprisal. In fact, sometimes getting a reaction out of the target of his words was the best reward he could uncover.
Oh Rin..you just seem to stick out like a sore thumb, don't you? Yeah, Rin didn't like the standard shinigami outfit. She just found it insanely common as well as boring and well...just plain old ugly. Rin liked to stand out (within reason of course). Our self-proclaimed empress continued to fan herself. She honestly was glad she was here, all that paperwork on her desk just seemed to continuously grow. If the captain were to go in there, he'd probably get a heart-attack first...then throw a fit...and then a nice long list bad things that were going to happen to her.
"I decided that if I was to be training with my esteemed Vice Captain, I should be well prepared by the time she got here." She smirked at this, closing her fan and putting it back in her obi. "Then I suppose you won't disappoint me, ne?" she replied as she took out her her sword. However, she didn't unsheathe it. It weighed more with the sheath on thus allowing her strikes to be much more painful. "You look stunning today." At this, she laughed lightly as she'd blush lightly. "Ahaha~ Thank you!" See! This was so much more better than doing her paperwork or going on another boring mission...like the last time when she stopped some crazy restaurant owner from blowing up a district somewhere in Seireitei. Stupid fool..
Anyway! Rin held her sword out with one hand and got into a defensive dance. "Shall we begin?" she asked as she motioned him to attack her with her two fingers. She was allowing him the first strike! In all honesty, she wasn't quite sure what to expect from the third seat. She'd seen him fight a few times and was impressed by what she saw, but it wasn't enough to really gauge just how good he was. This should be interesting!

Then it was fortunate for Rin that she was going to be sparring with someone who also made his own modifications to his uniform. While not as extravagant as hers, Kaen had gone for an air of practicality in his own uniform, removing the sleeves to reveal his well toned arms, and emblazoning his family crest on the back of the uniform. He'd also made a far less loose haori than most shinigami, as he had once complained about how the standard uniform's wide, loose sleeves and pant legs caught on everything. So he had cut back on all of that so that his movements could be precise and uninterupted.
He saw his Vice Captain put away her fan and heard her respond. "Then I suppose you won't disappoint me, ne?" Kaen returned her smirk with one of his own. "I'll certainly try not to." He replied, shifting his weight back and forth as if to keep his muscles loose and to stay relaxed. Her reaction to her compliment only made his usual mischievous grin grow a little bit. "Oh my, that's an interesting reaction. To think I made the great Rin-fukutaichou blush." He joked, and at her request settled into his own fighting stance.
He was surprised to see she had not drawn her sword however. Of course at first glance this would not have meant much, given the difference in skill between them. However, Kaen did not draw his zanpakuto. He was strictly a hand to hand fighter. If she had in fact drawn her blade, it would have been an entirely different matter entirely, as Kaen would not trust himself to be able to parry aside such blows with his bare hands. But her sheathed blade, while no doubt capable of breaking bones, could be defended against, Kaen was sure, even unarmed.
She gestured for Kaen to strike first. Kaen didn't hesitate. If he hesitated he would lose, and he needed to gauge her range. That Nodachi of hers would be a challenge to fight past, sheathed or not, and Kaen needed to get an idea of just how well she could control her range to be able to decide a plan of attack. Kaen's first attack was a straight forward charge, towards Rin-- or so it seemed. Just as he reached the edge of her attack range, he suddenly dropped into a roll, anticipating a horizontal cut to keep him back, and attempted to emerge from the roll with a low sweeping kick to take the Lieutenant off balance.
Rin liked to keep her blade sheathed for a reason. A rather special one. Yes, we know it looks good, but that's not it! The sheath was sort of like a weapon on its own. Though, it would be far less painful than the actual blade itself. But no doubt, it was enough to leave someone writhing in pain for a moment or two...which was ample time to take someone out. Rin remained in her spot for a moment. He was coming for her...but he wasn't a fool. Her blade could cover a wide range with just a simple swing. He was probably aware of that and probably already thought of a way to counter this.
Rin wasn't limited to standard swings and slashes. She was a wild fighter that constantly made erratic movements. Hm, let's see...if she made a vertical slash he could just move to the sides and he could just duck or jump with horizontal slashes. Ne, he was so fast! Troublesome...but she had senses and instinct on her side. The second he dropped, she'd jump high into the air which was the best option she had at the moment. Remember that sheath we talked about? She was going to use it now. She held her sword in a downward position and aimed at Kaen's leg which was probably extended at this point. With her thumb, she'd flick the sheath off and sending it flying towards his shin. It would be extremely painful if it hit. Catching it would also be difficult. It was being used as a projectile.
Rin wasn't finished though. She'd land behind Kaen. Now that her sword was unsheathed, she posed more of a threat. Though she wasn't trying to take a life or sever a limb so she'd hold back a bit. That and she quite liked the third seat alive and well. Unfortunately for him, Rin wasn't much of a hand to hand fighter. As a samurai, she mainly handled swords. He depended on her weapons quite a bit. She'd end her move with a vertical slash. How would he fare against that!?

Kaen saw his Vice Captain leap from the ground, avoiding his attack. As expected of a Vice captain... Kaen considered, his eyes still managing to follow her movement. He saw her swing her blade, and this action confused him for a moment. As long as her nodachi was, from his crouched position, scoring a hit shouldn't have been possible. Then he saw the sheath shift. Clever. The unexpected attack hit its mark, striking Kaen's shin. Fortunately, as a practitioner of Muay Thai, Kaen's shins were extremely tough, due to his training (Muay Thai typically uses the shins for both blocking and kicking). Although the blow certainly hurt, it likely did not have the effect Rin had been hoping for.
Seeing her land, Kaen's arm went up to his own sword hilt. Now that she had drawn her blade, Kaen expected he'd have to draw his own. A lesser foe he may not have bothered against, but she was undoubtably stronger than him, and without his blade he accepted the possibility of taking serious injury. Ignoring the pain in his shin, when Rin attempted her vertical cut, Kaen sidestepped the blow, performing a hurried double-step in towards Rin. He needed to be close and her long blade made him have to take more steps than he ordinarily would have.
Kaen then drew his Kodachi from his back, and slashed at Rin's shoulder in a single motion. A technique Kaen had improvised from iaido, hoping that this technique might catch the Vice Captain off guard. Kaen may have been stronger and faster than Rin, but in a straight up fight, he understood his Vice Captain's greater skill would likely be his undoing. If he was to prevail in this battle, he would have to try and stay unpredictable. Make his opponent believe he was doing one thing, and then do another. Straight up attacks would not work, he knew.
Following his Iaido strike, Kaen attempted to throw a Muay Thai leg kick. To someone who had never taken one below, such a blow was potentially crippling, especially from someone of Kaen's strength. Even if they had trained up to take such blows however, Kaen expected the blow would still hurt fiercely, and repeated blows could still greatly hamper mobility. And Kaen wanted to take every advantage he could.
Curses. Muay Thai. And she was certain that would do something! Ne~ Well, she had other things up her sleeve. Big weapons meant big swings. Big swings left her wide open. Rin was aware of this. She normally lured opponents in like this and then launched something else. Rin kept a watchful eye on Kaen. She saw him go for his Kodachi. She was wide open. He was going to slash at her no doubt. That's what they always did. Rin immediately brought her sword up in front of her with a single hand and held it in reverse grip as she moved on foot back. She'd do so as he dodged her slash and moved closer. She needed to stabilize herself for her next maneuver.
It was a rather good thing that one could process information faster than they could move. Had it not been for this, she might even lose. Kaen was stronger and faster than her by quite a bit. Well, she could use shunpo, but she didn't want to go all out and shunpo in sword fight is just annoying (to her anyway). She'd have to rely solely on her instincts and senses. She'd block his incoming slash with her own blade. However, it would be then that she realized that Kaen specialized in hand-to-hand combat. He would just stop here. This slash was a decoy!
Ne! How could she be so foolish!? It completely slipped her mind. He thought ahead. Rin was in no position to dodge. She'd have to find a way to retaliate. Impressive. But she wasn't going to allow him to get on her so easily. Muay Thai fighters used their shins, correct? Well, she guess they might have been rather strong if he was able to ignore the pain from her first hit. It made sense if he was going to strike at her with it. Rin had one free hand and she'd make an attempt to grab at his ankle and yank him away. Though, it would rather painful on her part. With all the strength and momentum he probably put into it, it was more than likely enough to stun her. That hand would be rendered useless for a little bit.
If Rin was able to successfully yank Kaen away, she'd follow up with a slash to his forearm. It would be hard to block this considering the fact that he would be momentarily off-balanced from her yank. What would he do now?!

Kaen's iaido strike missed its mark; his kodachi cutting through nothing but air. He saw the surprise in his Vice Captain's body language, however, when he launched his leg kick. She had clearly not been expecting that, but instinct seemed to aid her reactions in this situation, as she was still able to partially block the kick-- and yank him off balance at that. It was an effective counter, and Kaen saw her use a counterslash. There was just one small problem... although Rin's blade hit its mark, Kaen was far too close for the massive Nodachi to have its maximum effect.
The blade cut into Kaen's sword arm, and the shinigami almost winced. Almost. His counterattack was too important to risk by flinching from this blow. Kaen's uninjured arm-- the one closest to Rin; snapped out in an attempt to grab her wrist, which should have been exposed, given that she was in mid-slash. Rather than try and use this as a stabilizer, the shinigami instead let himself drop, shooting a second kick at the bottom of Rin's shin (hey it almost rhymes~). This too was an offbalancing attack, as Kaen had suddenly switched styles in an instant.
Kaen was intending to bring Rin to the ground with him, and then use his Brazilian Jiujitsu training to roll into a superior groundfighting position. His shorter Kodachi was already much better suited to such close range combat, whereas Rin's giant Nodachi was not. Using the wide swings needed to utilize such a massive blade to its full effect would be difficult, if not impossible at such a close range. However, Kaen's much shorter kodachi was much better suited to a close range engagement, and he had been trained in a style specifically designed for ground combat. If the battle hit the ground, Kaen expected he would have a tremendous advantage, Vice Captain or not.
The boy just didn't wince, did he? Huh, interesting. It was also a relief. Perhaps she didn't have to hold back so much after all! That was rather good. Not only that, but he was using his kodachi and the chance to use her blade excited her tremendously. Oh you have no idea! Lately, she'd only been using those high tech weapons and Rin was an old-fashioned kind of gal that believed in traditional sword fighting. She didn't like ninjas either. Sneaky and underhanded...ew. They definitely couldn't take her on face to face. Pah! Cowards!
In any case, he grabbed her wrist. If he had that wrist captive, she wouldn't be able to utilize her sword. She still had her free hand. Though, it still hurt...but she'd just have to grin and bear it...she was going to need it for her next attack. Rin immediately released her sword, allowing it to fall into her free hand. Rin didn't need the blade to knock Kaen out. She had the hilt which was the perfect size for fighting in this range. Unfortunately for her though, he was in the process of kicking her shin. She had to do something, now! Kaen was good at hand to hand combat. Rin was decent, but it most certainly wasn't her forte. It really would put her at a disadvantage if he got her to the ground.
Rin used the butt of the hilt, using full force to slam it against the side of Kaen's head as she felt his leg impact her shin. He was right, using the blade would be near impossible at this range. However, the hilt was almost as dangerous as the blade itself. Due to the fact that he was at such a close range, it would be incredibly tough to dodge; especially since he was falling with her. Blocking would also be difficult because of how close he was to her. Not to mention, he couldn't catch it or anything. One of his hands held his weapon while the other kept her wrist captive. A strike to his head might knock him out or force him to release his grip on her. It was enough to ruin any chances of him making any other moves striking at her again for the next few moments. A hit like that would stun anyone. It was ample time to allow Rin to roll farther away from Kaen. Far enough to allow her to use her sword properly. At this point, she was on one knee because he really did hurt her shin. Well, at least he'd attained his goal: Getting her to the ground.
Rin would switch hands again, moving her blade to her good hand. She was currently using the bad one that blocked his earlier strike. Her slashes wouldn't come out properly if she was using that hand. She'd then make one horizontal slash at his shins. Nothing too deep. Just enough to make it hurt ...well, alot. No more kicking. She was going to stop him from it and immobilize him.
Everything was proceeding nicely from Kaen's point of view. Rin's sword arm was trapped, despite her efforts to free it, and his kick was bringing her down. Kaen allowed a smirk to cross his features at his success. He had a shot at this afterall. Then he saw Rin release the blade from her sword hand. Was she trying to free up her blade in the other? But the Nodachi was such a long blade. Using it in one hand would be unwieldy and the blade itself was too long to use properly at this range, let alone in mid-fall--
WHAM!
Rin's blow with the hilt struck its mark with precision, smashing into the side of Kaen's head. The 3rd seat's eyes actually went completely blank for about half a second from the unexpected impact, stunned and actually unconscious for about half a second. Then his body hit the ground and the second impact smacked him right back into consciousness. What the-- she used the sword hilt? Dammit! I didn't think of that! Kaen silently cursed his failure to notice such a basic thing. He'd gotten much too overconfident over a few very minor victories in the real fight. He was fighting a Vice Captain. It was unlikely she'd do anything pointlessly, and he had to remember that!
But he didn't have time to berate himself now. Rin's attack had served its purpose. Kaen had released her wrist, and had come back into the conscious realm just in time to see her perform another slash with her Nodachi. And here was Kaen on his back. A bad position to be defending from. Although, the knees weren't an ideal fighting situation either, so Kaen intended some manner of counterattack.
Rin's attack was aimed low, which was a difficult place to block with his shorter Kodachi. Instead, Kaen tried to improvise an attack from his Capoeira training. Letting go of his Kodachi for an instant, Kaen's palms slammed into the ground behind him, and he flung his body upwards, so that his entire weight was resting on his hands and shoulders for a brief moment. Then he pushed up with his hands, flipping himself back up onto his feet-- a technique called a kip up in some circles. Due to the first stage of the technique, Rin's blade passed harmlessly underneath him, barely missing her intended target.
The second Kaen got to his feet, he kicked his blade up into the air with his foot, catching it and attempting to unleash a vertical cut straight downwards at Rin while she was kneeling. His attack seemed a bit slower than usual, as Kaen's mind was still recovering from the momentary loss of consciousness. Nonetheless, he was able to still maintain his old tactics. The downwards slash was a distraction, as usual. Immediately following the slash, he stepped in towards Rin, and throwing a powerful knee strike. If Rin continued to try and defend from a kneeling position then the knee would have her head as its target. Unfortunately for Kaen, like his slash, his knee's strength was considerably reduced by his lapse in consciousness, but it would still be a staggering blow.
"Ah~ He's a pesky one, ne?" Ego much? Ah man, typical empress attitude; thinking she's better than everyone. In any case, the peskiness was a good thing. A very very good thing. It just meant that he'd be a formidable opponent against enemies. Of course, he's part of squad 7. Everyone in squad 7 was formidable. They were the strongest squad with the strongest captain! No doubt! So of course, it was only natural that he was giving her a hard time! Well, not hard...er..Rin is just going to start a new sentence because her ego just refuses her to complete that sentence. Complications! She's annoying isn't she!?
Ne? Wasn't that Capoeira? She recognized that move! Rin's fighting style was what most people would call a "bullshit, lazy man's" fighting style. She'd take bits and pieces from different forms of martial arts and make up the rest as she goes. It's...unorthodox. Some people don't even like it. But hey, if she's vice captain, it must be working, right? Weirdo. Anyway! Rin immediately retracted her blade once she saw that she missed. He was back on his feet. He armed himself again. Rin was still on one knee. She had a plan already. It was all about timing though. At this point, Rin was well aware of how Kaen did things. An attack to open her up or distract her and then a much more devastating attacking following up immediately after.
Well, she got to slow him down. She still wasn't as fast as he was, but it most certainly was better than before. Easier to keep up. Defending on your knee truly was difficult. Which is exactly why she wasn't going to do it. It wasn't her only option so that was good! Using the pressure built up in her knee, she'd roll far off to the side, just barely avoiding his slash. Rin waited until the very last second to do so. As she rolled, she kept her knees bent so that it would be easier to get up again. Seeing as he immediately followed up with a slash, she had enough time to get to her feet and then spring towards him to make one fat, horizontal slash at the arm closest to her. She wasn't finished though, with her fingers, Rin turned the sword around and twirled around in a circle on her good leg, bringing the blade with her. It would cut anyone that came near her. If Kaen somehow managed to make it past the first strike, then this slash should slow him down terribly.
Kaen's eyes caught Rin evade his slash and by extention his knee. Kaen stopped in a combat stance, seeing his Vice Captain come to her feet and counterattacked with a slash of her own! Kaen's Kodachi flew across his body, knocking Rin's blade aside in a swift parry, but he saw she was far from done. He saw Rin shift her blade and spin into a circle, unleashing a second attack! Kaen had no choice and was forced to step back, keeping his Kodachi in front of him in a guard position. He noted the tip of Rin's nodachi just barely strike his Kodachi's blade but not enough to shift his guard. But he had lost a notable advantage, in that Rin had forced him to the outside. He'd need to do something to get back in. But what could he try?
Kaen began to circle around Rin, being careful to stay a single step out of her range. If she tried to close the distance, Kaen intended to take advantage of it. He was gripping his Kodachi in two hands in a Seigan grip, to maintain stability of the blade, and to be able to cover any opening he gave her. He needed a method of getting past the arc of the Nodachi though. "A troublesome range... He mused. Hachiryuu. You got any suggestions? He asked his blade in his mind. You could remove her top to distract her! Kaen's eyes narrowed as though he'd heard a bad joke. "Perverted old man...." He muttered under his breath, the gesture and the words perhaps confusing Rin for a moment.
Out of the corner of his eye, however, Kaen noted the trunk of a nearby tree and began to formulate a plan. He smirked and suddenly stepped in quickly, moving his Kodachi sideways to try and bat aside Rin's sword. A common attack in order to try and open up a user. However, in deliberate defiance of that rule, Kaen suddenly stepped back immediately after his attempt. Now! Kaen leapt off the ground, planting his feet against the trunk of the tree and kicked off the tree in an attempt to launch himself into a somersault above Rin's head, attacking with a downward slash at her shoulder in mid-flip, before attempting to land behind the Vice Captain and initiating a backwards side kick aimed at the small of her back. Unlike many of Kaen's combinations, both blows were powerful this time, and aimed to be decisive. Kaen's eyes were suddenly filled with a vibrant flame. Show me, Rin-fukutaichou! Show me the power of a Vice Captain! He thought with a grin that, while still maintaining his mischievous smirk seemed to hint at a battle lust. For Kaen, things had just kicked into gear, and his blood was really pumping now.

Vibrant orange eyes looked at the third seat with sheer amusement. It was almost like she was taunting him. What would he try next? He'd tried numerous attacks and utilized many styles. He knew quite a bit. She could actually learn from him. See~! Everyone benefits from training. Win-Win! She studied him for moment, slowly turning as he circled her. Distance was a tricky thing. She had to be careful. She couldn't be too close or too far. She saw him mutter something? Rin's senses weren't terrible. She heard something but couldn't make out what exactly it was. "Ah, did you say something?" she asked with curiosity, blinking repeatedly. Was he going to use his shikai or something? Wait no...he wouldn't! This was just training after all! Weird, ne?
Rin waited for him to attack. He was planning something. She knew it. He always seemed to have a plan. He batted her sword to the side and she'd allow that. Weak attack first and then a strong attack. It was the strong one she needed to watch out for. Wait..was he going to use that tree? Ah, she's done something like this before! Like when she fought that arrancar that happened to be in the Segunda's fraccion. He was frighteningly powerful. Back then, she remembered kicking off a side of a beam and then attacking said arrancar. He blocked it..AND she lost. In any case, Rin was instantly reminded of this and she'd allow a grin of her own to play over her features. He was going to do something interesting. She could sense it.
What he did next was a little bit surprising to the self-proclaimed empress. Eh!? He began to somersault above her. Rin figured that he'd go for a slash from above. That's what she did. She couldn't think of any other reason as to why he'd launch himself off the trunk of a tree. She'd bring her sword over her head, blocking his slash. At this point, he could either land in front of her or behind her. She blinked once and her initial response was to move to the side. To the side!! As he attempted to land, Rin twisted her body, swerving to the side on her heels in attempt to avoid whatever he had planned next. She half-expected him to attack her from behind. As she moved though, she felt his kick impact the side of her back. She couldn't get away in time to avoid the blow completely! Ne~ Not cool! Rin let out a sharp gasp as she stumbled forward. She brought a foot forward to stabilize herself. Jeez! That hurt!. It would have hurt alot more if it weren't for her obi. It cushioned the blow a little bit. Just a little. Better than nothing!
She'd been suppressing the vicious side of her this whole time. She normally only got like that during a serious fight. It was like an on and off switch with the Vice-Captain. Maybe she could afford to let loose a little more, ne? Rin spun around. She jumped and launched herself in his direction. She retracted her sword a bit, to anyone, it would look like she was going to stab at his feet. In reality, she just needed room for her next maneuver. She made a mental note to keep a certain distance away from him. As she landed, she planted her free palm onto the ground and made a single horizontal slash across his legs and raked her blade back. Basically, she was slashing at him while doing a one-handed handstand. Using the pressure built up in her palm, she launched herself up off the ground and furthered herself away from Kaen. She could see it in his eyes. He wanted things to get a little more serious. It was like he was just getting started. Well....the same could be said for her.
Of course, that last attack was nothing in comparison to what she was going to do next. She'd dash forwards, coming at him from the front and as she approached him, she'd make a downward diagonal slash, bringing it down from his shoulder to him which would definitely hurt. She'd then twist her wrist and make a horizontal slash, cutting across his stomach and move closer towards him. The slashes weren't deep enough to severely injure anyone. She flipped her sword around with her fingers so that the hilt was facing him and she'd slam that against his solar plexus hopefully knocking the wind out of him. As a Vice-Captain, she most certainly wasn't going to make it easy on him. "Let's see how well you can keep up.."
Kaen's excitement only grew when Rin managed to parry aside his sword strike from above, although a flash of dissapointment flickered across his eyes when his kick was not blocked in such a manner. Was this the extent of his Vice Captain's power? No... no that couldn't be right! Someone who outranked Kaen must be much more talented than this! He knew this and so he returned to his seemingly defensive stance once more, his eyes never failing to leave Rin.
And a good thing too! The fukutaichou drew back her blade. The angle... was it an attack at his leg. Kaen dropped into a low stance, and his Kodachi dropped as well. The feint at his foot actually helped Kaen here, as he saw he go into a most unorthodox attack, sweeping at his legs! If it hadn't been for her feint earlier it would have succeeded as well. But he feint at his foot had caused Kaen's guard to lower towards his legs. Because of that when Rin's nodachi arced towards his legs, he was able to swing his Kodachi back with one hand, the blades clashing and producing a sudden spark as edge met edge.
Kaen quickly pulled back to his fighting pose again as he saw Rin flip back up and land on her feet away from him. Kaen stepped forwards to give pursuit, but it appeared Rin had far from finished! Kaen's sword cut up, barely parrying aside her diagonal slash. However his rapid stop of his forwards momentum momentarily put Kaen off balance, and Rin's horizontal slash met its mark, raking across Kaen's stomach. He saw her attack with her hilt however, and managed to regain balance in time to bring his arm between her attack and its target, the blow slamming against his forearm. It certainly hurt, and would likely be bruised, but it was far better than what could have happened.Despite taking a hit, Kaen grinned broadly. "That's it..." He hissed as if possessed, the fire in his eyes dancing about at the growing intensity of their match.
Rin's attack had brought her closer to Kaen, and the shinigami was about to start coming hard and fast. Kaen stepped in after Rin, trying to use Rin's own forward momentum to move him into striking range. His left hand shot out with a palm strike, aimed at the lieutenant's face, and immediately following his Kodachi slashed downwards at her thigh. But Kaen wasn't done. His combo wasn't nearly completed, and his free leg slammed across-- Ashi Bari. A sweeping technique borrowed from Karate, intended to send his lieutenant off balance. Intending to get the most out of the hopeful leg sweep, Kaen sent a vertical punch directly at Rin's torso in a near mirror technique to her prior attack at his solar plexus.
