Okay, STOP! Before you read this guide, you should know that it's a sequel guide. You should have already read Kone's Guide to Creating Characters. If you have not already read Kone's Guide to Creating Characters, then please do so by clicking this link.
This guide is different from Kone's guide because it's not about how you're supposed to create a character in general. This is about how you should be making a character for a specific race. This is details on what you should be doing for that race, and what's cool about that race, also guidelines on the powers of those races.
Alright so, when we start with shinigami we generally just want to be some badass captain, right? Well, there's a lot that goes into making a great shinigami. Of course, the minor details say it all when you start off. Captains won't be an overly young age, most of them will be dignified adults, not teenagers or children. As for the blood type, that's just for healing purposes, it's not relevant.
Appearance is just one little piece of a shinigami app. Generally, appearance really doesn't matter. I'd like you to go beyond the minimum for this, but don't stress out about it. Captains are tend to wear the same damn thing. They wear the white haori and the black shinigami robes. Their outfits really don't vary or differ much, so appearance isn't too important. Though to be fair, you should be trying to get a memorable face implanted in our minds. Also be aware, uniqueness is cool to have. Not all shinigami should be good looking. Try seeing where you can get with a less attractive character. You might have fun.
Personality is obviously much more important than appearance. I'd say that personality is the most important of the character descriptions. All captains have a certain way that they must act. Undignified and immature shinigami will never make it as captains. You should be detailed about your character, and what makes this person unique as a captain in the Gotei Thirteen. You should also understand that a mature character is what scores a higher rank. If you want to be immature, you should be shooting for a seated or vice captain position. You should be ranging from 10 to 15 likes/dislikes if you want a high range spot, and generally your overall should have 8-15+ paragraphs.
Now, history. This is the second most important part of your app. Remember, this is AU. You shouldn't have anyone from the anime/manga here. Also remember, this is what builds your character. This is what gave your character his/her identity. Did a trauma create an avenger? Did a smooth life create a spoiled brat? Did a single dramatic sight cause a caring person? Did a handicap cause a great warrior? Whatever happened, it's up to you. Try to read other apps, see who already did what. Try not to have a history that's like anyone else's. Everyone has a unique story to tell.
Powers. These are most important. I can't tell you exactly how powers are made, but I can tell you what they're like, what they do, and I can help you get started. A shinigami's zanpakuto is his or her life. This is what lets you battle the strongest of your enemies. A shinigami's zanpakuto doesn't incur transformations in their body or soul, it doesn't incur any sort of transformation at all in their physical appearance. What it transforms is the weapon itself. The blade changes into whatever shape or form your ability is supposed to become, and you control it and attack with it. Now, don't forget, powers are the most important, and also the most difficult process. If you went and copied someone else, this won't pass. If powers don't pass, your app can't be accepted regardless of the quality of everything else. If your powers are too strong, they won't be passed. Powers can be strong, but you can't make something with say, light speed travel. You can't make something with no drawback to it, and everything must be equal in nature in terms of give-take. Your powers should also be something fully original, and they should follow the base that you have chosen. I don't want to see an ice based zanpakuto with a fire technique, or a crystal based zanpakuto with a teleportation technique.
Now, the most difficult part of making a zanpakuto for a shinigami is making it original. It's next to impossible to make it absolutely unique, so the best thing to do is try and make it as original as possible. What I like to do is think of a keyword to use as the base for my ability. I'll use a word that most people don't consider when I make my powers. Most people use a base like lightning, or storms, or fire, or stat increase, things like that. When you're a complete expert, making unique things off of those bases is no problem, though it may be difficult to use them correctly. The effectiveness of an ability depends more on the techniques and power behind the ability itself. It depends on the uniqueness. People oftentimes see the same type of bases over and over again, and naturally learn how to counter them. With a unique base, such a problem isn't as existent. If you use a whip, I don't know the ramifications of it as well as I do a sword. You might be able to sneak something past my guard, and take me out. Since you guys might have some trouble thinking of original base words, I'll come up with a list for you, just below this paragraph.

Let's be honest. As an Arrancar, we want to be proud, and super strong. The majority of us want to be some top notch Espada, going around acting like Ulquiorra and using Segunda Etapa in tough spots. The more subservient of us aim for Fraccion spots. You should know how to fill out all the generals. Fighting style describes how you fight, appearance describes what you look like. Remember to describe these well. They will be very important to your character in later life. Not just for grading purposes, but for actual battle. The less detailed your fighting style is, the less options you have, since that gives you a lot less to go on for what your character would do in so and so situation. Personality is important too. If you have low detail in that, you don't know how your character would react in a certain situation. That can be bad. Very bad.

Powers. These are most important. I can't tell you exactly how powers are made, but I can tell you what they're like, what they do, and I can help you get started. An Arrancar's zanpakuto is his/her main weapon. Generally, Arrancar do not have Kido based abilities like the Shinigami, and so it's difficult to get by without Ressurection. The Arrancar release deals with transforming the user's body, rather than their weapon. Usually, the weapon does not change in the way that a Shinigami's does, and a physical change in appearance is undergone.
Let's face it. Segunda Etapa is rare. Most that try to get it, will not get it. You'll just end up wasting your time making it on the app, and you'll waste the 500 extra SP you could've had if you'd chosen Power over HSR. So, if you suspect that you're in over your head in trying to get a Top Tier Espada spot with your character, don't even try to. Do the smart thing, pick Power instead of HSR, and stick only with a Primera Etapa. Only real experts can make a Segunda Etapa that's truly great, a powerful expansion of their ability. Even Ulquiorra's Segunda Etapa was pretty flawed.
