This is a training thread for Zanken Gairan and Rin Minamoto. The setting is outside of the Third Division Barracks in the large field where Zanken has his special training room. This is NDE, PG-13 and a training session for SP.

"One two three, one two three, one two three, HRAAA STRIKE!" Zanken shouted out, blasting away his punching bag in a comic like action, it flying away and "ding" ing when it got up into the sky. Zanken was in the middle of one of his training routines. So far it was going well, nothing out of the ordinary. As usuall, some idiots from the Unseated crew of Third Division tried to gang up on him. As a result, there was a pile of unconcious, moaning bodys a few feet from Zanken. He had just skyrocketed his third punchng bag. Just a normal, everyday training session. For Zanken at least.
Zanken was now going into kendo practice. So he began hacking at trees. Well, he needed the wood to repair the damages anyways. Plus a tree was good for honing strength. Well. So far so good. But what would happen later?
It was a rather peaceful afternoon. Well, excluding the random brawls. Honestly, what barbarians! Well, this only applied to the Third Division. Insolent fools. Rin would walk by, fanning herself as she patronized them. There was a trail of their disgusting bodies...all leading up to a certain vice captain who was hacking away at trees. Rin would stand there for a good minute with arms crossed. Was he....training?
Oh God no! He couldn't be!...Not like that.
It was rather painful for Rin to watch. He needed to spar...not hack away at some tree! The Vice Captain would shake her head in disapproval. If this kid wanted to train, he'd have to do it properly...and who better to show him than the vice captain of the notorious squad 7? "Training, ne? Hacking away at that tree won't do very much...Perhaps you'd like to spar instead?" she said as she took a few steps closer. She'd close her fan and stash it away in her obi. Would he accept her offer to spar?

Zanken was almost done getting enough wood to repair his training room when a voice behind him asked him if he wanted to spar. "One *SLASH* second *SLASH* last *SLASH* stroke *SLASH*" Zanken said amidst the slashes. Suddenly he stopped and the tree fell down into various different pieces of wood. They were cut in such a way they looked like wood planks. Well, that done, Zanken turned around. He had abandoned his large trench coat and only had on his regular gray Shinakusho. It was a fairly well kept Shinakusho and had the Third Division symbol on the back of it. Zanken looked at Rin. "So, you want to spar eh? All right. What do you want to fight with first? Fists, swords, kido?" Zanken simply said.
The feisty vice captain would impatiently tap her foot. Time was money! Well, it wasn't money in this case, it was power...but that's not the point! She'd wait for the other vice captain to finish cutting down his tree. So, he was from the Third Division as well? She had to wonder, why would their unseated members gang up on their own vice captain? Were they all blood thirsty? Well, she could understand the feeling, but she only felt that way during a serious battle. This seemed to be a normal thing.
"So, you want to spar eh? All right. What do you want to fight with first? Fists, swords, kido?" The raven haired vice captain blinked. Rin was a samurai. A samurai in her past life and a samurai in the after life. She prided herself on the use of swords. She favored them quite a bit. With them she felt like she was able to move without restriction. Well, she only felt that way because of a particular art she was taught in. "Why don't we start of with swords, ne?" she said as she began unsheathing her monstrous sword. She held it in a defensive position and motioned for him to attack with her finger.
"Rin Minamimoto, Squad 7 Vice Captain. I suppose it's a pleasure."

"All right then, swords it is." Zanken simply said, unsheathing his unusual inverse colored Zanpakuto. Zanken took up his Ken no Shinkan style of swordsmanship, an assassins sword style that was equally good at going one on one with other sword users. "Zanken Gairan, Vice-Captain of Third Division, Holder of the Blade of Heaven, Kodaiyiseki. At your service." Zanken said, finishing with with a bow.
Suddenly Zanken vanished on the spot and reappeared in front of Rin, slashing down hard with his blade. This was gonna prove to be fun! After Zanken did that, he launched a vicious barrage of slashes, overhead slashes, backhand overhead slashes, and other such strikes all at Rin. Zanken had a speed advantage in this, so even if Rin could counter some of them, the sheer number of them would overwhelm her defenses and a few slashes might hit her.

A barrage of slashes. How typical. Rin knew a style. It was known as the Mujushin Kenjutsu...but she always found it better to go with the flow and add bits and pieces of what she knew into her fighting. It's what made her so strong. Enemies always have a hard time keeping up with someone that's unstable. She learned that from experience. Hence, her "go with the flow" art became the most used in combat.
Rin was probably going to try to beat the living day lights out of Zanken. It's just something she did! She didn't have anything against him, it's just they way she worked. As she was nearly done unsheathing her sword, she'd notice that Zanken was gone from his original spot. He was obviously going to try for a frontal attack. Most people did. She didn't. It just simply wasn't her style. She liked attacking from above because she had more options if she missed or blocked. Not only that, but it never really gave a chance for the enemy to find an open spot. It was all about options and what she could do next. Some samurai quite disliked her for that style while some praised her for it. It was a love it or hate it kind of thing.
She was in the process of unsheathing her damn sword and he was coming for her. Rin quickly brought both the sheath and the blade in front of her to block his first blow. Well, she brought most of the sheath in front of her. It was rather sturdy and it wouldn't break from his blade mainly because it probably weighed more. She'd draw the rest of her sword out while holding the sheath with her right hand and slash at Zanken with her left. Rin didn't depend on one hand to fight with. She made sure she was versatile and capable of using both hands.
Zanken may have been faster but, she had better instinct than him. Speed doesn't mean much if you could foresee your opponents attack coming from a mile away. Rin able to counter almost all of them. His moves were a repeat of cliche slashes that were rather easy to predict. At some point, Rin would push him off with ease. They had a strength difference too. A big one. Enma-taicho wouldn't want his Vice Captain to be a weakling after all! Once she pushed him off, she'd crouch on the ground and launch herself forward at Zanken. It would appear that she was going to hit him from the front, but she wasn't going to do that! Oh no, no, no! Once she was a little more than a few inches away from him, she'd swerve around, ending up behind him and slash at his back. He might have a hard time blocking this seeing as he wouldn't be able to see her attack coming.

Perfect Zanken thought with a grin. While it was true that he was doing multiple slashes over and over and over, he wasn't JUST doing that. Every few slashes that Zanken was doing he threw in a lightning fast stab. Why did he do this? Simple. A long blade like Rin's was good for reach and blocking slashes. However, the longer a blade is, inadvertantly the larger the "blind spots" in the blade grew. Every blade has blind spots, however longer ones have more than others. Seeing as Rin's blade was exeptionally long, it had lots of blind spots for Zanken to exploit. Fighting with swords was all about controling your opponents "range". Range was dictated by the blade the person used. While Rin had a higher range than Zanken did, Zanken had less blind spots in his range. The stabs were getting through the blind spots, but due to Rin's high instinct, only a few hit, and of those few, only a few actually grazed her skin. Despite what Rin thought, if you didn't have enough speed to react to what was happeneing, it didn't matter if you knew it was coming. Seeing something coming and then being able to react to it are two different things entirely.
On top of that, Zanken had around 100 more Spiritual Pressure than Rin did. This meant he had much higher cutting power than she did. Spiritual Pressure affects your ability to cut, therefore the more one has the higher cutting power the person has. Rapidly striking the blade in the same spots over and over could not be very good for Rin's blade. However, she DID have the strength advantage of the two, so when Rin pushed, Zanken got pushed back. Zanken quickly recovered as he was pushed back and readied himself for Rin's attack, however, at the last second, she moved!
Zanken thrust out his right arm, which was currently holding the sword, and as Rin went past, it nicked her arm a bit. This was possible because Zanken was faster than Rin was, plus he had a decent instinct and was fairly well versed in fighting enemys that tried that tactic. As Rin got behind him and slashed, Zanken Shunpoed behind her and struck at her back! Zanken was fast, and because Rin was in the middle of slashing at him, it might be tricky to block it. Of course, she could always Shunpo out of the way and avoid harm.

Oh ho ho...Shunpo. Cheater!...Well, she never thought about using shunpo despite seeing him use it earlier. It never crossed her mind that she should use it to dodge...yet. Rin's blade was an indestructable 185 pound beast. Chimeiyoki was perfectly fine. Besides, blades were made for this sort of thing, no? Had they not been, then there would be no point in using them as a weapon.
Mid-slash, she'd noticed Zanken was gone. He was obviously going to come behind her and attack, but there was no time to dodge, so seeing as she had the range for it, she'd force her body to twist towards Zanken, who was behind her. She'd keep her blade up and block his strike. Her sword was long enough, she could do it easily, no? She'd throw his blade off with her own as she blocked and she'd take this chance to slash his torso. Again, her blade was long enough, so it could definitely reach him no problem. It might be a nasty slash too..

As Zanken was slashing down at Rin's back, he noticed some movement from her shoulder. Then he noticed the massive sword being slashed back at him. Yaaaaaa!!! Zanken didn't want to take a hit from that monster, but because he was in the middle of a slash, he couldn't stop! How could he avoid!? Suddenly Zanken thought of something. This was going to make the slash worse than what he had wanted though.
In the middle of Zanken slashing at Rin's back, Zanken dropped to one knee, adding more speed and power to the slash while also avoiding Rin's sword. She probably should have avoided the blow instead of trying to strike him, but then again, she might be able to make something out of this situation. If she wasn't able to do anything though, a massive slash wound going down her back to the thigh of her left leg was going to hit. If she used Shunpo or something she would still get hit, since it was to close to totally dodge.
Oh come now, did he honestly expect to dodge everything? You can't leave a spar or battle unscathed. It's utterly impossible. The key to actually landing hits was to actually receive some and attack back. Otherwise, nothing is going to happen and then it all just turns into spam. Spam can make the vice captain rather irritated and if Zanken didn't watch out, Rin was going to release and go apeshit on him.
We should all hope that that was an empty threat. It wasn't like she could kill him. Oh no, she'd get in trouble for that. But if she wouldn't.....well, let's leave that up for interpretation, shall we? His dropping to one knee wouldn't do very much. I mean, how much effort did it take to angle your sword to block the other? She just simply turned her wrist so that the rest of the sword would block his slash. She certainly had the range for it and she wasn't planning on receiving an ugly slash too. As she'd block, she'd send her foot sailing right for Zanken's head. It would be pretty easy considering that he dropped to one knee to slash her. Also, she wore heavy sandals. Prepare yourself for a concussion.

As Zanken finished his slash, and had it blocked by Rin, his instincts told him to look up. Good thing to, Rin's foot was coming at his face now. It was to close to dodge or do anything at this range, but Zanken quickly thought of something. Zanken shifted a little so instead of his face getting slammed, his shoulder would instead. Zanken also twisted his blade so it was now facing upwards. As the kick hit, the force threw Zanken backwards, sending the sword upward and back, slashing up at the inside of her leg. A hit for a hit. Rin probably could see it coming, but at this range it was to late to do anything.
"Gah!!!" Zanken painfully cried out. It wasn't very fun to have your body thrown by a kick, especially a strong kick like that. He was thrown a few feet before skidding to a halt. Zanken quickly got up, mindful of his right arm, and faced Rin again. There was a grin on his face. "Haha! I haven't had this much fun training in a while!" Zanken laughed out. He felt his right shoulder and winced as he touched it, but his grin didn't fade. "Nice kick." Zanken said. It wasn't shattered thankfully, but the kick made a pretty bad bruise on it. He probably shouldn't use that arm for a while, which would force him to use his left arm. Zanken switched his sword to his left hand and held it out in front of him, the sword point pointing right at Rin. Time for round two.
