-Basic Information-
Name: Date Maharo (伊達 真羽呂)
Age of Death: Unknown, early childhood
Real Age/Age of Appearance: ~250/26
Birthday (Month/Day): January 23rd
Blood Type: B+
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-Appearance-
Height/Weight: 6'8"/230lbs
Physical Description: Tall and willowy, Maharo is pale in complexion and topped with a wild waist-length mane of white hair. Maharo's features are soft and delicate-looking, though few have ever actually seen their face beyond their light blue eyes. All lean muscle and long limbs, Maharo is physically androgynous with a slight lean toward the masculine, while their voice leans toward the feminine despite being relatively low in pitch.
The most notable article of clothing of Maharo's is their bright red, long-nosed tengu mask bearing a fierce expression, contrasting with their timid body language. They wear a women's academy uniform, simply because they prefer the way that the red accents match their mask. They own a single pair of two-tooth geta sandals that they wear constantly, giving them a clacking sound as they walk that has become ubiquitous with their presence.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-Personality-
Likes:
- Their Mask: It holds a lot of sentimental value for Maharo, on top of making it easier to bear being seen.
- Geta Sandals: The first of two exceptions to Maharo's disdain for repetitive noises, they enjoy the wooden clacking when walking in a pair of these.
- Rainy Days: The second of the two exceptions for repetitive noises, Maharo loves the sound of rain. It brings good memories.
- Oddly-Shaped Rocks: They have a collection. Their favorite is one shaped vaguely like a rabbit if you squint really hard.
- Telling Stories: No matter how fantastical or mundane, true or fictitious, Maharo enjoys telling stories to anyone willing to listen. They have a particular fondness for fables.
- Food: Maharo likes food, they'll eat anything with nutritional value if given the chance. Usually when people aren't looking. Unfortunately, animals tend to steal food from them.
- Lizards: Maharo has not had food stolen by any lizards yet.
Dislikes:
- Their Own Face: Maharo suffers from acute facial dysmorphia, meaning that they have a distorted perception of their own face.
- Being Perceived: An extension of their dysmorphia, Maharo downright fears ever being the center of attention.
- Sunny Days: Sunlight brings about bad memories for Maharo. Also, they sunburn easily
- Repetitive Noises: For reasons they struggle to put into words, noises that repeat for too long cause Maharo to become anxious, with a few exceptions.
- Being Alone with their Thoughts: While Maharo may not be a social butterfly, they still prefer the company of another over being alone.
- Alcohol: They fail to see the appeal of drinking, even in the company of others.
- Dogs: One stole food from Maharo once while they were growing up in the Rukongai.
- Cats: One of these also stole food from them once.
- Birds: They tend to land on their mask's nose if they don't move for too long. They have also stolen food from them before.
Flaws:
- Personal Space: Maharo has a poor sense of personal space, especially regarding the nose of their mask.
- Bad Under Pressure: When in fight or flight, Maharo most often chooses flight.
- Forgetful: Things slip Maharo's mind often, especially appointments.
- Crybaby: Maharo is easily brought to tears by emotional subjects.
Habits:
- Close and Quiet: When speaking to others, Maharo tends to lean down and talk quietly.
- Drowzy: Maharo tends to fall asleep when they have nothing to do. They've become very good at sleeping while standing or sitting up.
- Wallflower: Maharo has a tendency to stand in corners or against walls, otherwise they feel like they're in the way.
Fears:
- Under a Microscope: Maharo fears being observed closely, both physically and behaviorally. They aren't sure what someone would find if they were to be psychoanalyzed, but they're afraid that it wouldn't be good.
- Failure: Maharo's sense of self-worth is very easily bruised, causing them to often feel a paralyzing fear when faced with the possibility of failure.
- Arachnophobia: They're frightened of anything on eight legs.
Goals:
- Live Up to the Role: Maharo was taught that those who are capable ought to help those who aren't. They hope to be an exemplary Shinigami.
- Find the Self: Between all of their quirks and oddities, Maharo feels like it's a constant struggle just to understand their own emotions or desires.
- Fit In: Maharo knows how much they stand out, and yearns to find a place where they feel like they belong.
Alignment: Neutral Good
Overall Personality: Maharo is someone defined by their contradictions. They are tall and imposing, yet gentle and soft-spoken. They're polite and afraid of conflict, though most of their talents relate to martial prowess. They're friendly and desire emotional connection despite being frightened of growing close to others. All this to say, Maharo is kind of a mess, and they are perfectly aware of the fact.
Emotions are an elusive thing for Maharo. They struggle to understand the emotions of others if they aren't stated outright, which often leaves them appearing quite dense. Worse than that though, their own emotions are tumultuous and inconsistent. Oftentimes, they find themselves simply mirroring the emotions of others around them. When they're alone, they can become quite detached, which only makes it more difficult for them to handle powerful emotions.
While Maharo's emotions are quite fluid, they do possess a rigid sense of justice. They believe that while it is the powerful who determine the ways of the world, the strong have a duty to make the world a kind and safe place, and those who have the potential to become strong should do so in order to ensure that said duty is fulfilled. This sense of justice is what put Maharo on the path of a Shinigami in the first place, and it is what continues to guide their actions.
Of course, while Maharo may be kind and believe in justice, this does not make them exempt from feeling anger. In fact, they can hold quite a grudge against someone. If anything their sense of justice only makes their anger more dangerous, as they may convince themselves that someone who has slighted them is an obstacle in the way of making the world better for others.
On the topic of Maharo's gender, they choose not to align with either side of the perceived binary. Instead of trying to fit the norms of either male or female, they simply live as their genuine self. They don't really mind being misgendered as either male or female but will let others know when it comes up.
Overall, Maharo is a kind person, if a little odd. However, they're also prone to becoming unstable, potentially even dangerous, if they don't have someone or something to keep themselves grounded.

-Powers-
Fighting Style: Maharo's focus is squarely on Zanjutsu, which makes use of their tall frame and long limbs, allowing them to take pot-shots from well outside some opponents' reach, similar to the jabs of a boxer. Their real strength is in their counter, waiting for their opponent to enter their range before striking. They have a solid stance and good control of their blade, whether they are using one or both hands to wield it.
While their style flourishes in spars, it lacks in the realm of practical application. Maharo's rigid stance can be easily broken by anyone who can close in too quickly for them to react and stay inside of their range. Additionally, they can be quickly cornered by anyone capable of attacking too quickly for Maharo to counter. They are also slow to adapt to anyone using any sort of bizarre fighting style. Finally, their reliance on their reach advantage leaves them vulnerable to anyone who has an even greater reach than they do.
As for their skills outside of Zanjutsu, they know a few Kido spells and hand-to-hand techniques, but use them primarily as aces to be kept up their sleeve unless they spot an opening to use one. Their Shunpo is decent, but they struggle to use it reliably.
Zanpakuto Spirit Appearance: A blind tengu with the wings of a crow, wearing the clothes of a monk.
Inner World: A small shack in the eye of a massive tornado.
Zanpakuto Appearances:
- Sealed: As though to clash with its user's body, Maharo's sealed Zanpakuto takes the form of a short Wakizashi. The hilt is wrapped in red, matching Maharo's tengu mask, and the guard is silver, kite-shaped, and features a feather-like pattern etched into it. The sheath is painted a dark green and is carried on Maharo's waist.
- Shikai: Kyofu Umo Takes the form of a silver falchion with a plume of black feathers at the base of the blade. The hilt remains unchanged.
Zanpakuto Release Names:
- Shikai: "Whir, Kyofu Umo!"
Overall Ability: This Zanpakuto is themed around wind and focuses on allowing Maharo to control powerful air currents in order to give them an advantage over their opponent.
Shikai Overall Ability: While Kyofu Umo is in Shikai, Maharo's body is surrounded by a powerful whirlwind, blowing about their clothes and hair while they seem entirely unbothered by it. This whirlwind both grants Maharo passive benefits while being the source of their more specialized techniques.
Kyofu Umo's whirlwind acts as a sort of armor, pushing out against anything trying to enter while also granting Maharo improved mobility and the ability to hover. These winds blow with such force that they can rip flesh from bone and grant the ends of Maharo's limbs a drill-like effect which uses Maharo's highest spiritual stat to determine their efficacy.
In addition to the whirlwind surrounding them, swinging Kyofu Umo creates blades of wind that extend about one meter past the physical falchion itself, giving Maharo's attacks deceptively long range.
Bankai Overall Ability:
Zanpakuto Techniques:
{Tatsumaki-o Ayatsuru}Effect: Kyofu Umo's whirlwind gathers around the Shikai's falchion, turning into a tornado that acts as a wide, 3-meter-long blade bound the Zanpakuto's hilt.
Use: Maharo lifts the falchion over their head as the winds gather to form the tornado blade.
Drawback: This Technique costs 100 Reiatsu to activate and 50 each following turn to maintain it. Additionally, Maharo cannot activate this technique and attack with it in the same turn. While this Technique is active, Maharo sacrifices all of Kyofu Umo's defensive and mobility-based properties.

{Arashi Kyutai}
Effect: Maharo extends the range of Kyofu Umo's whirlwind, creating a larger protective barrier that extends five meters in all directions around Maharo. While the outside continues to resist entry, anyone within the range of the barrier as it forms is caught inside it, as is anyone who does manage to enter the barrier from outside. While inside the barrier, anyone other than Maharo is cut by the ferocious winds inside of it.
Use: Maharo remains stationary for one post as the barrier extends outward.
Drawback: This technique costs 200 Reiatsu to use and 100 each following turn to maintain it.

Other Techniques:
{Shunpo}Class: 7
Rank: Learned
Effect: A movement technique that allows the user to move faster than the eye can follow. The focal point that determines the basis of this technique is speed. As speed is the main point of the technique, the method is best characterized by how fast one can get from Point A to Point B in the least amount of steps. Training and skill are what determines how fast a user of Shunpo can move. Those of little skill in the technique or those who haven't used it for an extended amount of time would obviously be out of practice, causing those individuals to be considerably slower. This requires the use of more steps to move the same distance and become tired more easily in a shorter amount of time. A single step magnifies speed for that step by ten times. This one is automatically learned in the academy. All Shinigami know this when created. This technique does not take up a technique slot.
Use: Focus of Reishi around the feet area and launch off into a single blurring step. It is not unlike teleportation in appearance, but it is simply extremely fast movement. It is often used to gain an edge in a single moment of combat or to dodge incoming attacks.
Drawback: Shunpo uses fifty Reiatsu per step.

Effect: The user fires a concentrated, powerful lightning bolt from their finger that pierces a target.
Use: Speak the spell and point hand at the target.
Incantation: "Arise god of thunder! Awake mother of storms! Unleash the lighting on the sinners!" When the incantation is spoken, the Reiatsu Strength used to determine the power of Byakurai is increased by 10%. (i.e. 100 Reiatsu Strength is treated as 110.)

-History-
Birthplace: Unknown
Current Residence: Shinigami Academy dormitory
Memorable Figures:
- The Scarred Shinigami: Maharo's father figure, first friend, and the one who gave them their mask.
History: When they died, Maharo brought few memories of the World of the Living with them aside from the vague impression of once having a mother, just enough for their heart to ache for her as they grew up alone in the rukongai. They arrived in the 61st district of the North Rukongai. Whereas most children sent to the Soul Society are either adopted by adult residents or fall in with a band of similarly homeless children, Maharo believed themselves too terribly disfigured to ever be loved or accepted by a found family. So, they relied only upon themselves.
A few years of fending for themselves against the harsh reality of the outer rukongai began to sour Maharo's outlook on the world. While it had never been a kind place, they grew jealous and disdainful toward those who found comfort in the company of others. The fact that their isolation was self-imposed and based on a distorted view of their own face meant nothing as they began to hate others as much as they had initially feared them. Had they continued their existence like this, Maharo would likely have grown to be a twisted, hateful soul, but luckily for them, things soon changed.
It was the night of a heavy rainstorm and Maharo had managed to find a rickety shack to take shelter within. They believed that they had found somewhere nice and lonely to wait out the storm, but it didn't take long for someone else to enter the shack, a tall man in black robes, bearing a sword on his hip and an odd red mask with a long nose on his face. Maharo hid in the corner of the shack, covering their face and simply hoped that the man would leave them be. A few minutes of silence between the two before the man took his mask off and offered it to Maharo. While Maharo's disfigurements were all in their head, the man's were not. He was missing an eye, hadn't a nose to speak of, and the whole left half of his face had been terribly burnt. Nevertheless, he offered Maharo the mask.
Maharo accepted the mask and put it on. Words were not exchanged that night, but the man didn't take it back when the storm finally let up and he left. The next time they met, the man wore a new mask, this one reminiscent of a fanged demon. They spoke briefly, of nothing in particular, a conversation only of note because of how rare mundane conversations were for the young Maharo. They would meet many more times as Maharo grew up. Despite this, Maharo would never learn anything about the man beside the fact that he was a Shinigami of Squad 13. They never even got his name.
What they spoke of would vary from day to day. Sometimes it would just be about the weather, other times the Shinigami would tell Maharo a story or give them advice. Once, Maharo asked the Shinigami if he could beat up some kids that had bullied them. For reasons that Maharo couldn't understand, kids that had left them alone before now bullied them once they began wearing the mask. It was then that the Shinigami told Maharo something that would shape their future. He told them that strength wasn't for pushing around other people, but to protect those that needed it. At the time, Maharo pouted and told the Shinigami that he was just using that as an excuse to be lazy, but as they grew older, the Shinigami's words that day would become the foundation of their own moral code.
As Maharo grew from a child to a teenager, they became more well-adjusted, at least as much as someone who faced the world from behind a long-nosed mask could. They took advantage of their tall frame to make money working odd jobs around the district. Though they remained a relative outsider, some of the locals began to treat them kindly, and for the first time, Maharo spoke with others besides the Shinigami. It was only around this time that Maharo named themselves, as they figured they should have something to tell others when they asked for it. Still, the Shinigami never asked for their name, and they never asked for his.
Maharo doesn't remember the last time they spoke with the scarred Shinigami. There was no finality to it, nothing to suggest that the two would never cross paths again. It was a bright, sunny day when Maharo realized that they hadn't seen him for a few months at that point. They didn't think much of it at the time, but as the long summer stretched on, Maharo realized that the Shinigami would never return. It was only the occasional, casual company of the locals that kept Maharo going. They never spoke to anyone of the Shinigami though, they had chosen to carry that grief alone.
It only seemed natural after that point to try and follow in the Shinigami's footsteps. Maharo wasn't sure why, but something told them that they had to take on the duty that the Shinigami spoke of, and to do so, they had to become strong just as he was. Finally, they enrolled in the academy where they bloomed into a skilled fighter.
