RP Sample (Optional): Ashland sat on the roof of the academy with his hands behind him propping him up. A sucker rolled idly between his teeth as it clicked slowly from tooth to tooth. He was being idle again despite his goals. He hadn't really made any friends since joining the academy nor did he excel at much outside of Kido. Those classes were his specialty but the others required effort. Not to mention he was some kid from the slums which always seemed to leave a bad taste in the mouth of his instructors. Idly he wondered if anyone else in the academy had ever even seen a hollow. The instructors sure but the other students? He doubted it. His body ached at the memory of it and a flash of his sisters terrified expression flooded his thoughts. With a sigh he would lower his head as black hair spilled around his shoulders. He had been told repeatedly to do something with it but he preferred it loose. He needed to hurry up and get out of this place before he became some permanent fixture. Still there were always sweets in the cafeteria so that was nice. Along with being fed consistently and having his own room.
His golden eye would shift down from the sky to the grounds below. Watching as some students were practicing their sparring. Ashland would rub the back of his head before adjusting his academy robes. He preferred black but these colors would have to do for the time being. That said he couldn't really look down on the people below him throwing their all into the swordsmanship. The issue was that they were clearly athletic types that believed through hard work they could make a difference...or just get stronger or get their vengeance. So many back stories he didn't really want to learn. Besides everyone left him to himself. His sucker would crack and he would release he had bitten down on it....well it made sense that it had weakened. He had been sucking on it for several minutes now. Still he would crunch away the rest of it and spit it to the side. He could hear Tauk berating him later if he skipped the entire class again. Claiming he wouldn't ever graduate at the rate he was going.
"If you want to make a difference...you have to graduate...graduating means trying...get to it ya little asshole."
Ashland would say in a mocking voice to himself. Still he would collect his training sword. Utilizing air step to move from the roof to the training grounds in a simple enough movement. He had a lot of practice with his kido at this point so it was a rather simple bit of incantation for him. Still he would join the training session. Of course this particular instructor seemed to have it out for Ashland. Every time he paired Ashland up with the super athletic kid. Every time Ashland lost and every time he was the butt of the joke. It sucked but at least he was improving from the challenge. Still this time wasn't unlike the others. The athletic kid was placed against him. Again.
So Ashland would bring up his guard. Crossing his training sword in front of him. Both hands holding the hilt as his golden eye watched his opponent. Soon the kid moved and went for an overhead power strike. From experience Ashland knew he couldn't take on that hit directly. So he would wait until the last moment and pivot in his step. Dodging the blow. Attempting to strike himself during an opening. Only to find his right foot kicked out from under him. He hit the ground hard before that training sword came crashing down in his chest. With a cough Ashland laid there defeated again. Of Course it was the same result. If this was kido training...that kid would be bound to a chair by now.

-Appearance-
Height/Weight: 5'10 200 lbs
Physical Description: Ashland stands taller than most in his class though his appearance looks aggressive. Due to an incident in his childhood he wears an eyepatch over his right eye at all times. Having lost it as a child after barely surviving an attack. His remaining eye has a golden glow emanating from it. He prefers to wear long sleeved robes to hide the scars from the attack aside from the one across the bridge of his nose. His dark hair hangs loose around his shoulders down to his chest while his expression is often that of a bored man. Uninterested in most things outside of himself. His skin is pale as he doesn't spend much time in the sun since outside is to easy to be interrupted during a nap.
He carries himself with a brisk walk when he does want to go somewhere of course. Though when he doesn't its a slower pace with hunched shoulders and an irritated look. His yellow eye seems to be intimidating to some but he rarely appears to take anything seriously. However when he gets angry his golden eye glows brighter in response to his Reiatsu rising to his emotions. That said once a bond is made he is quick to smile and share his sweets. Coming across as much softer once someone gets to know him.

Fears:
Losing friends to hollows are a part of every day life to a shinigami...however due to his past he is afraid of losing anyone he cares about. Making friends means giving a damn about them so it can be rough to get to that point.
Being forced out of the gotai 13 or never actually graduating. He believes he will die of boredom in the slums. Not to mention life is easier for shinigami right?
Losing his remaining eye. The idea of going blind terrifies him as he thinks he wouldn't function anymore without his eyes. Losing one was bad enough.
Goals:
1 - Live the easy life (Get ranked enough to have others do any chores for him.)
2 - Kill every damned Hollow he can find (Once he gets the strength to do so. He had a hate for them due to his history)
3 - Get accepted into squad 3 (the first responders get to kill hollows the most.)

Overall Personality: Ashland is a fairly simple man though he is talented and he knows it. He feels like most things come to him naturally so he doesn't see the need to push himself outside of his own desires. He has goals of course but he figures natural talent will get him far. Studying anything other than Kido is boring and a waste of time. As he believes Kido is the solve all to his issues. If one knows Kido, one knows how to manipulate his whole world. These are words he heard early in life and words he chose to live by.
When it comes to seeing others get bullied though he will mouth off quickly even if its out of his depth. He isn't the most capable of fighters as he skips most strength training exercises in favor of napping...but he will stand up for others. If someone is being violent without reason he will likely respond as best he can in the same manner. Often leading himself into more trouble than he can handle. But thats only for now. Soon with his studies he will be able to be more potent than most bullies and put them in their place for once.
Ashland does get excited to learn Kido though. Techniques are exhilarating for him. He finds the reliance on swords to be useful but too heavily relied upon. He feels that a variety of techniques is useful to any group. Especially healing techniques that could be used to save lives for instance. The more lives he saves the less he will have to fight. Not to mention being able to mend himself in the field is an added bonus. He focuses as a support type front liner but isn't without his own skills with a blade if need be. Though he prefers napping to training any day.
When it comes to hollows though Ashlands whole personality shifts. It is difficult to get him to listen to reason and not pursue and eliminate any hollow he finds. Of course those are still outside of his depth but with a rage involving them that can not be easily quelled it takes either a close friend or a ranking officer to order him down. He will take risks and fight wildly if a hollow is around. Giving up his usual calm personality and quiet demeanor for a savage rage that shows in his glowing golden eye.

-Powers-
Fighting Style: Ashland isn't much of one for direct clashes. His fighting style usually keeps the enemy at mid to long range if possible. Since raw physical strength isn't his strong suit he utilizes Kido over his sword whenever possible. Often utilizing hit and run tactics if he can. In one on one combat this is more difficult and drawn out as most opponents who prefer a direct clash are quick to pursue a retreating foe. In this scenario he will try and set up traps and use the terrain to his advantage. Even utilizing guerilla tactics if he has the opportunity to ambush from a hidden position.
Sealed fighting usually involves a heavy Kido offense with the sword used for defensive purposes. If someone gets close enough to cross swords with him he is already at a disadvantage. So he will try and keep some distance if possible and tactically retreat to strike from a more comfortable range whenever possible. Binding Kido are his primary tactic to keep others from pursuing him. Otherwise he will use attack Kido at a more effective range.
Released Fighting involves utilizing his Zanpaktos ability to engage in close combat more effectively. Slowing opponents who would engage him and striking at openings. Then retreating just back out of reach. If opponents attempt to stay out of the range of his release he will then return to the use of Kido. Preferring the ranged combat over the up close and personal.
Team tactics on the other hand has Ashland attempting to stay clear of direct combat. Choosing the support role and providing cover fire for any retreat. He will not willingly leave an ally behind or ignore the death of an ally. He will focus on healing and binding down enemies when he can but if a friend is in danger his focus shifts. He will rage and attempt to cut down the threat to his friend. Especially if its a hollow.
That said he prefers to skip fighting whenever possible and retreat to a more relaxed role. Figuring healers are usually kept safe and in the background. He will choose to walk away from a fight if possible (Not including hollows) by binding the enemy first. Only in the event that the fight is unavoidable or its a hollow will he actually put in the effort to win. His philosophy is those with real strength have no need to prove it to anyone.
Zanpakutou Spirit Appearance(Optional):[/b]
Inner World(Optional):[/b] The inner world is endless open sea under a cloudy night sky. The still waters reflect the sky perfectly like a mirror and it stretches on endlessly in either direction. With no land or anything besides endless water and sky in every direction. When he gets riled his inner world grows into crashing waves and storms.
Zanpakutou Appearances: Sealed his Zanpakutou appears as a normal katana with a single blue ribbon hanging from the base of the hilt.
Shikai - the length of the ribbon grows and flourishes out at the end to the length of his forearm. Wrapping around his forearm to keep him from being able to let it go. The blade itself turning blue.
Bankai - The Zanpakutou splits into a black katana and wakizashi with black ribbons wrapping around his arms up to his shoulders. A set of blue tentacles decorate each length of blade. Appearing to wrap around them.

Overall Ability:
The Zanpakutos overall ability is to create and manipulate water. Creating a concealing mist by condensing his water element Reiatsu and then releasing it in a mist form around him. This will remove the ability to see outside of fifteen meters of ones self. This mist is thirty meters in diameter from Ashland. However this affects allies and even Ashland himself. Sensory abilities outside of enhanced sight will bypass this entirely.
Shikai Overall Ability: The Shikai overall ability for Kaiyō is a water based element. At this stage it condenses Ashlands Reiatsu in order to project it out around him as an outwards pressure. Once activated the sword wraps around his forearm with a blue ribbon and emits out a mist. This mist is easy to see through but acts as if it were water pressure underwater pushing against them. The closer one gets to Ashland the more Kaiyō attempts to push them away. However this release can not distinguish between ally and foe and thus anyone attempting to remain close to Ashland feels as if they were being physically pushed away from him.
This functions as such.At fifty meters the Ashland's water pushes against intruders with 5% of his OS. At forty meters this is increased to 10% of the offensive stat. At thirty meters this raises to 15%, and 20% at twenty meters. Finally at ten meters, Ashland's water restricts movement with a force equal to 25% of his Offensive Stat. . This can be countered by speed increase techniques such as flash step. Within his domain at this point however allies are effected as well.
When the invaders OS clashes with Ashlands if it beats it then the effects are halved. If they can not beat it the full percentage is a 25% speed debuff.
Bankai Overall Ability: The Bankai ability is called Kraken. At this stage the pressure exerted off of Ashland is immense. Pushing pressure out as he chooses so he can select to effect allies or not. The mist is thicker and blankets the ground around him for fifty meters. Giving the appearance of a white frothing sea. At this stage the Bankai allows for Ashland to utilize the full extent of his power within the fifty meters at will. Making it a great enemy debuff while leaving his allies free to roam. However his zone of control is limited to where he activates it as the mist does not travel with him. Meaning those fifty meters at initial activation are the limits of this ability.
At fifty meters the Ashland's water pushes against intruders with 10% of his OS. At forty meters this is increased to 20% of the offensive stat. At thirty meters this raises to 30%, and 40% at twenty meters. Finally at ten meters, Ashland's water restricts movement with a force equal to 50% of his Offensive Stat. This can be countered by speed increase techniques such as flash step. Within his domain Ashland is dangerous even for speed builds with Bankai active.
When the invaders OS clashes with Ashlands if it beats it then the effects are halved. If they can not beat it the full percentage is a 50% speed debuff.

Stack one - Speed is reduced by 10 to the target hit
stack two - speed is reduced by 20 to the target hit
stack three - speed is reduced by 40 to the target hit
and so on doubling each stack.
How to use technique: Ashland points the sword straight forward and focuses his Reiatsu. Launching out a bolt of water from the tip. (Speed of projectile is equal to Ashland's speed. If the chant "Strike and infect Mekajiki" is stated then increase speed by 10%)
Technique Drawbacks: The projectile only travels at Ashland's speed and loses effect outside of thirty meters. Falling apart as harmless water.
Technique Name: Sakana no gakkō (School of Fish)
Technique Type: Shikai
Technique Element: Water
Technique Description and Effects: This technique puts up a circling dome of fish made of water around Ashland. Protecting him from attacks for one turn. If the attacker is caught close quarters by the dome the fish wriggle into them. Not doing any damage but reducing their speed by half for three turns.
How to use technique: Ashland must kneel down and stab his sword into the ground. Focusing his connection to his Shikai to form the barrier.
Technique Drawbacks: Lightning based attacks ignores this technique entirely.
Technique Name: Shachi (Killer Whale)

Technique Description and Effects: This runs high pressure water along the length of the blade. Allowing the blade extra cutting power equal to Ashlands Reiatsu. Allowing for considerably more cutting power.
How to use technique: Ashland runs his fingers along the side of the blade and chants "Rise forward and strike down my devils"
Technique Drawbacks: While this is active Kido can be maintained but not activated as the Reiatsu is too focused into one task.
Technique Name: Shinkai hantā (Deep Sea Hunter)

Technique Element: Water
Technique Description and Effects: In this mode Ashland gives up his usual tactics to go on the offense. His Reiatsu is locked to his body and doubles his speed. Enhancing him for rapid movement.
How to use technique: Ashland has to close his eyes and chant "Strike your prey Shinkai hantā." After this his eye will shine blue and he will gain a speed boost for two rounds.
Technique Drawbacks: Reiatsu is locked to his body during this technique. He can not use Kido or maintain techniques outside of this technique while it is active.

Shindan Suru is a moderately weak kidou that is only good for diagnosing a persons injuries. The range at which you can use this kidou is as far as you can stretch your arms. To use this kidou you must be able to touch the person you are using it on.
How to use technique:
To use this kidou you must be touching the person you are using it on as before mentioned. First you place both your hands over the sternum of the person's chest from either the left or right of the body. Your hands will be placed side by side on the sternum. Then the user gathers reiatsu to their palms and focuses. They then send the reiatsu through the person's body like tendrils to search for any injuries both external and internal.

Ashland was born in Rukon District 80 though he never met either of his parents. His earliest memory was living under the care of his older adopted sister and his two brothers. He was the baby of the group so often the others spoiled him as best they could. However life in the slums wasn't easy. This far out from the central districts the district 80 was not well off. Lawlessness was common out there and shinigami far less so. Often they had to steal to get by and even then it didn't always end well. He recalled being powerless against a shop keeper as they beat his older sister. It was only through the combined efforts of his two brothers and himself that they got her out of there alive at all. None of them without bruises to show for it. The four of them lived in an old cottage with broken windows. They put blankets over them for privacy but often it was cold. However he was content just to eat every day. This continued for most of his youth. Together the Four of them were happy. His sister said her last name was Irisaki from the human world but they all took that name.
His sister was Ichika Irisaki, His oldest brother who was a year younger than her was named Haru and two years younger than him was Haruto. Lastly at five years younger than Haruto was Ashland as the baby of the group. He didn't really pick up many talents until he turned fifteen. At which point he blossomed with spiritual energy...thought the four of them opted to keep it quiet. Not wanting to be separated from each other if he was taken to be a shinigami. Still it proved useful. On one occasion he was even able to watch a shinigami utilize a Kido. He had chanted something and a red beam had shot out. Paralyzing their target where he stood. After which they took in the man for questioning...but Ashland had heard it...and memorized it.
Soon enough he was able to replicate it even. His brothers were impressed but his sister warned them about going out on their own and doing such dangerous things. Still she seemed ill more often as of late so they let her rest and ignored the warnings. Seeing as how Ashland had managed to replicate a Kido...over the next few years until Ashland turned twenty the three would split up...attempting to memorize any spells they saw a shinigami use....and bring the information of it all back to Ashland. It was a lot of trial and error....but soon he was able to replicate several level seven incantations. Including one that let him diagnose his sisters sickness. Allowing him to see how her own power was causing her fevers.
The only medicine for this was just outside the gates to the inner circle as the closest location. A medical bath house that shinigami were known to frequent on their off time. However Ashland was desperate. So he would sneak out one night and leave his three siblings sleeping together under the blanket. His sisters fever was getting worse and he needed to do something to keep her alive. So he snuck into the bathhouse. As best he could anyway.
Perhaps he was overzealous or just too certain of his own abilities. But despite managing to grab the medicine and making a run for it....Ashland was captured easily on the roof of the building. The Shinigami who had done so was named Tauk Kishimoto. A casual man from the squad 3 on his off time. He was berating Ashland for stealing when across the slums a loud crash was heard. On the outskirts of the 80th district. Where Ashlands siblings were. With a rush of passion mixed with fear Ashland pushed his spiritual limits against the Kido binding him and with a roar managed to break free much to his captors surprise. Rushing towards the danger.
Of course Ashland was far to weak to actually do anything. Even as the rain began to pour from the dark skies above he hit the street and continued to dash towards home. Praying he was wrong...praying they got out. The alarm blared behind him that a hollow was somewhere within the districts. Only confirming his fear further. Of course Tauk was keeping up with him fairly easily. Trying to yell at him to stop and wait for the shinigami to handle it. There wouldn't be any use to a kid going and getting himself eaten. Of course this fell on deaf ears. Ashland would not falter in his need to see the truth...however terrible it must be.
Tauk of course was getting tired of this and decided it would be best to just knock Ashland out. So he dropped to his level and caught up to him quickly. Attempting to strike him in the back of the neck to knock him out. Only to be shocked as Ashland broke a promise and used Kido in front of a shinigami. Suddenly with flash step he burst ahead down the straight street. Shocking Tauk enough to get closer to home. Enough to wish he hadn't...enough to see the truth.
Ashland looked on in horror at the destruction of his entire neighborhood. People were fleeing and fires were burning. At the center of it was his destroyed cottage....with only the bloody clothes of his siblings left. He watched a hollow finish eating his struggling and screaming sister as she locked eyes with him before she was swallowed into the beast. With a scream of rage Ashland would grab a burning piece of wood. Forgetting the pain in his hands. Forgetting the uselessness of it...He attacked the hollow only to get smashed through the remnants of his home. His right eye torn out in the process and most of his body broken from a single hit.
Of course Tauk couldn't stand by and simply watch a hollow on the rampage. Despite not being a seated member he couldn't wait for back up. He fought the hollow and in the process lost his right arm and leg. However Ashland managed to get off a Hodo #4 and hit the thing in the eye before Tauk would manage to finish it off. By the time back up arrived both were unconscious in the mud and ruin.
The two would spend the next year together in the hospital. At first Ashland wasn't much of one for talking. But over time Tauk got him talking again. Got him to talk about his family and built a friendship. Even gave him some lessons on how to refine the Kido he had learned so far. They were basics so even Tauk knew them. Forgetting the uselessness of it...He attacked the hollow only to get smashed through the remnants of his home. His right eye torn out in the process and most of his body broken from a single hit.
Of course Tauk couldn't stand by and simply watch a hollow on the rampage. Despite not being a seated member he couldn't wait for back up. He fought the hollow and in the process lost his right arm and leg. However Ashland managed to get off a Hodo #4 and hit the thing in the eye before Tauk would manage to finish it off. By the time back up arrived both were unconscious in the mud and ruin.
The two would spend the next year together in the hospital. At first Ashland wasn't much of one for talking. But over time Tauk got him talking again. Got him to talk about his family and built a friendship. Even gave him some lessons on how to refine the Kido he had learned so far. They were basics so even Tauk knew them. Still he would mentor Ashland during his recovery before suggesting a direction to take in life. Become a shinigami...join squad three and make a difference. Pay Tauk back for his arm and leg. Since Tauks soldiering days were over he would have to live vicariously through Ashland after all. So Ashland joined the academy and began to study to become a shinigami. A clear goal to join squad three in his mind.
