Finally! There it was. A proper swing. Rough? Sure. But it was fast and powerful. Kaen did want to assure Taiyo that he was in no danger of being harmed by this attack. Maybe it would help Taiyo loosen up at least a hair. Help him relax knowing that he was dealing with someone that could handle his best shot without fear of injury. Even though he was in mid-swing, Kaen's right arm released his training sword's blade, and flickered up at a speed of over 500-- more than twice Taiyo's speed. Taiyo's blade clashed, and Kaen stopped the blow with one hand, catching Taiyo's weapon between his thumb and palm in such a way that even had it been a real blade, the Vice Captain likely wouldn't have suffered more than a papercut, if even that. Taiyo's blade stopped dead in its tracks.
Or at least that had been the plan.
Kaen had not expected Taiyo's blow to break his blade-- though he should have anticipated it, given what he'd seen with the training dummy. The broken weapon crashed against Kaen's chest and slashed down, ripping open his Shihakusho, but it was easy and simple enough for Kaen to tense his body against the impact, suffering no injury, besides the damaged clothing. His Vice Captain badge tumbled out and Kaen caught it in his opposite hand, abandoning his strike to do so. That was the Empress's badge after-all. The symbol of his and her joint pride in the 7th Division, and he wasn't going to permit it to just fall to the ground like that.
Either way, Kaen was left holding the top half of Taiyo's weapon in his right hand, his sword and rank of office badge in his other, with a torn uniform, but completely unharmed. He was wearing a slightly confused expression as he looked down at his exposed chest. "Well... You did hit me. I didn't really expect that, but a hit is a hit." It was also here that Taiyo would catch a glimpse into the life Kaen had left. Kaen's body beneath his uniform's top was covered in a network of scars. Old blade wounds, years old crossed his torso, and the lingering remnants of a severe burn was visible near his shoulder. The cross-scar on his cheek, it seemed, was not the only souvenir Kaen had picked up in his career as a Shinigami.
"But either way, that's progress." Kaen stated. "A blow thrown out of desperation, but you still willed yourself to do it. Breathe. Take a second to recuperate. As you can see, I'm fine." Kaen set down the broken half of the weapon he was still holding, and, after looking over his uniform for a moment with a look of concentration, pulled the ripped halves together, and tightened the cord that held Hachiryuu on his back a bit more to help hold it together. He'd need to replace it, and he certainly wouldn't be going to any meetings dressed like that, but it'd hold for now.
"I'm not going to ask how that felt. Not good was it?" He sighed. "I'm going to be letting your sword instructor know, by the way, to first work on teaching you control. We'll run out of training swords if you swing like that every time." And you'll run out of sparring partners But Kaen didn't verbally mention that last bit. Taiyo had made progress and Kaen wasn't about to try and undo that as soon as it was made. "But you put your purpose before yourself. That's progress. That's important progress. You'll need to be able to do that. Hopefully just with fewer bruises next time, eh?" He teased very lightly, trying to ease the tension and help Taiyo relax after that.
