Thread Title: Impo vs Alex Participants: Impossible, Alexander Alistair World: Human World Death Setting: Non Death Enabled Rating: PG-13 Location: The the Karakura shopping district, right next to a fancy restaurant. Special Conditions: None. Circumstances: Impo is having a lovely night out on the town, when he gets attacked by a deranged homeless man with a fetish for demons.

"What a time to be alive." Impo said to himself, before taking a long sip of hot chocolate. He had returned to Karakura a few nights prior, and had decided to spoil himself a bit. He was currently at a nice restaurant, sitting on a second floor balcony, with the open sky above him. It was a warmer night, with the wind keeping the temperature nice and cool. Not too hot as to be unbearable, but not cold enough to need a jacket. Much like his meal, everything was just right. He placed his drink back down, and dug into his chicken alfredo. The delightful flavor of the cheese danced around on his tongue, complementing the savory taste of the chicken.
It had been such a long time since the failure had been able to enjoy such a meal, he'd forgotten the last time he splurged like this. Splurge being the operative word here. His glowing form nearly got him kicked out the moment he passed through the doors. Waving around some money was the only reason they let him stay in their fine establishment, and even then he had been forced to stay outdoors. Not that he was complaining, it truly was a gorgeous night out tonight. He sighed and leaned back in his chair. He could feel the eyes of the other patrons on him, and even the staff were sneaking glances at him. IT was to be expected, and while he didn't necessarily blame them for it, it got old real quick.
He tried not to let it bother him. He wanted to enjoy himself tonight, as a kind of welcome back party for himself. He might have been alone, but that was nothing new for him. He was always alone. He sighed, as he felt his good mood slip away. He wasn't that hungry anymore, but there was no way he wouldn't be finishing his meal. He'd spent way too much money to just let this food go to waste. Little did he know, that his peaceful night would be coming to an end very soon. The life of a failure was never easy.
”Ahh~ What a night.” the man remarked as he twirled the small spoon back and forth, kept clenched between his thumb and index. Letting his chin stay rested against his left hand, Alexander’s sharp blue eyes were, with a relaxed gaze, locked onto the small tower of sweetness and goodness before him. Sitting before his very eyes was the glass held strawberry sundae that he was enjoying on this lovely night. Extra berries. Wiggling his spoon back and forth, Alexander smirked before scooping up another helping of ice creamy goodness. Plopping it down into his mouth, the Quincy groaned in enjoyment as the sweetness spread across his tongue.
You couldn’t get anything like this in the Vandenreich. Sure, within the halls of Silbern he could have gotten anything made by the most talented, gourmet, chiefs of the Vandenreich ...but many of them would not have demeaned themselves to make something so common as a strawberry sundae. Or, a simple pizza with everything on it. These commoner foods were only acquirable via a trip to the world of the living, and so Alex did just that so he could satisfy his cravings and desires for sugar and grease. Oh, and naturally, Alex had a pizza as well.
Despite being dressed in a white suit, with a striped purple undershirt, Alex had decided to stop at a small joint for his nightly munch. It was a small restaurant that served American cuisine. In Karakura Town. Sure, he could have just gone to America instead of finding a replication joint here in Japan but he had business in the bustling city of Karakura. Well, okay, that was a lie. He didn’t really have business. ”That all for you, hun?” the skating waitress asked as she rolled over to Alex. ”Everything was great.” Alex remarked, paying his bill and leaving a generous tip.
It was a warm night with a cool breeze to keep everything just right. Strolling down the sidewalk, whistling a tune to himself, Alexander headed in a direction without quite being sure where he was going. He didn’t want to head back to the Silbern just quite yet so ...what was he gonna do? He could hit up one of the city's clubs, get something to drink, find more pizza. There was a list of options. But none of those ideas, save the last one, appealed to him much. Instead, he wanted his boredom to be taken care of.
He hadn’t even realized he had stopped in the middle of a crosswalk when he was lost in thought. Angry cars were honking at him. A smirk painted itself across his features as he decided just what he wanted to do. ”Karakura Town is full of hero types, isn’t it?” Alex asked himself, looking at the driver in the car closest to him as his grin widened. Waving at the driver, Alexs smile widened before he flipped his hand over and pointed two of his fingers up towards the sky. In that same instant, everything turned white. Two blocks, all around him, was suddenly engulfed in the light of a bright explosion of his creation as he reduced everything around him into a glass floor. Now, he would play the waiting game to see just who showed up first.

It was truly a wonderful meal, he thought, as he took a long sip of red wine. Then an explosion went off nearby, and he spit it out in a crimson mist. Choking, he lightly pounded on his chest, trying to clear his windpipe. He used his energy sensory, hoping this was just some unfortunate accident, but that sadly wasn't the case. Spiritual energy was all over the place where he heard and felt the explosion. The energy of the person felt... repulsive. It felt like their soul was bleached and serialized with how clean it felt.
The failure could hear the chattering of the people in the restaurant. Nervous and worried, some of the braver ones started making their way outside, hoping to see what it was that happened. Impo however, didn't stick around to talk. The second he recovered, he shot to his feet, and hopped over the balcony, running towards ground zero. With his higher senses, he could see the devastation even from where he was. Two blocks. Two entier blocks, turned to a glassy floor. He couldn't tell how many lives were wiped out in an instant, but it left him nearly seeing red.
He could see the monster from here. He was a handsome bastard, dressed like someone who would fit right in at a renaissance fair. He had a smug smirk on his face, that told him there wasn't a hint of remorse for what he'd done. Impo felt his face twist in rage as he arrived at the scene, glaring hatefully at the man. "WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU!?" He yelled over to him. He was trying to think of any reason for someone to do something like this. "Was this to kill a hollow!? What possible reason could you have, TO DESTROY TWO BLOCKS AND HOWEVER MANY PEOPLE WERE HERE!?"
He knew there was no explanation this monster pretending to be a man could give that would satisfy him. If someone had this much power, there was no hollow that could pose this much of a threat to him. On top of the fact that he didn't sense a hollow before the explosion, or anyone with a hint of spiritual power in the area. He pointed his palm at the man, and a sapphire blue cero charged in his hand. It fired not a moment after. The beam of energy was massive, easily over fifty feet wide, and was barreling right at the monster. It was aimed towards the sky, so if it missed, it would dissipate without destroying anything.
At the same time, a pearly white sword was created in his left hand. The weapon had an ethereal beauty to it, looking too pure for this world. It was a weapon he didn't use too often, but he figured he might need it for this... thing. He could tell the person was a human, but their soul felt wrong, and he couldn't tell why that was. He had never met a being like this, but he knew it wasn't a fullbringer. Where Fullbringers had energy that felt hollow-like, this one felt too.. 'pure' for a lack of a better word. It was unnatural. But no matter what, he'd bring this man justice.
Such chaos was not typically something Alexander participated in. There were plenty of other members of the Vandenreich that would slaughter and destroy at a moments notice, but typically Alexander was not one to follow in those footsteps. Despite the holiness of his families work, neither the dearly departed nor Alex himself, being called a hero was never something the Alistair strived for. They did not see themselves as heroes. They saw themselves as exterminators. Did a pest controller see himself as a hero for removing the angry raccoon from the closet or terminating the colony of termites? No. But, still, the Alistair still didn’t want the innocent masses to be the playthings and food for the minions of Hell. They wanted to see all of those monstrosities killed and the world kept safe from them.
But Alex? While true that he aimed to pursue his family's work to honor them, he was a bit differently wired. Maybe it was due to being raised within the Vandenreich, but Alex sought to have fun. He found entertainment in hunting demons. He pursued having fun when he fought. So while typically he’d not have done something like this his quest for entertainment was more important than the lives of a few dozen nobodies. And it paid off too. Because as Alex stood in the center of the destruction he caused, whistling a cheery tone rather loudly as ambulance sirens blared and people wailed and cried, he became away that someone, or something, was rapidly approaching his position.
”Hoo hoo..” Alex chuckled, smirking rather smugly as he turned his attention to his new friend. While Alex’s face was one of smug satisfaction the face of this new stranger was one twisted with hatred. Why so mad? Alex hadn’t done anything to him yet. Before Alexander could even begin to introduce himself he was caught open mouthed by the kid suddenly screaming rather angrily at him. Credit where it was due, for such basic questions they were good ones to ask. When the kid was done shouting Alex raised a fist in front of his mouth and coughed a little into it. ”Don’t you know it’s rude to start asking someone questions without even introducing yourself? The youth of this generation just don’t have manners anymore.” Alex remarked with a shake of his head, before noticing that the kid was raising his hand towards Alexander.
Not even catching the Quincy by surprise, reiatsu gathered and formed outside the palm of the kids hand before bursting forward into a rather large beam. Cero? Alex wondered to himself before he suddenly vanished with a blur of motion. Heading upwards and to his right, Alex reappeared at near teleportation speed atop a street light, balanced perfectly, and watched the Cero curve upwards and head out into space. ”A human using a Cero? My, my, my, I wonder just how that could be.” Alex said sarcastically before looking at Impossible again. Impo probably didn’t realize it, but he just revealed to Alex what he was. A instability. A Failure. He had revealed his race in his opening move, giving Alex all he needed to know for how to deal with him.
Raising one hand forward and extending just his index finger, Alex stood quietly for a moment before he started speaking once again. ”Question number one! You’ll be pleased to know that there’s nothing wrong with me. In fact, during my last scheduled physical I was told that I was in near perfect health and that the only concern was my diet. The nurse, bless her heart, told me that I needed to broaden my diet or that I might have cholesterol problems in the future. But your concern for my health and well-being is appreciated, coming from a stranger. So thank you.” Alex explained before raising his middle finger up to hold up two fingers. ”Quuuuuestion two! No. I don’t concern myself with things such as Hollows. As for question three, and you’re really gonna wanna pay attention to this one, was that I-” Alex started to explain ”was bored. I wanted to lure out one of the many heroes that like to run around this city pretending that what any of them does matters. And here you are!”
“The dashing, inexperienced, unorthodox young man who has come to put down the evil man who senselessly caused destruction and ended oh so many lives! I’m sure I’d make a mint selling this to Hollywood, don’t you think?” Alex asked, crossing his arms across his chest and smirking up at Impossible. ”In any case I’m sure you get the gist of it. I did all this just for you! Just so you could feel important by coming and putting a stop to me. C’mon, thank me. Tell the handsome man thank you for giving you something to do.” Alex taunted as he, using the Quincy Cross he had hidden in his suit sleeve, drew in some reiatsu to refresh what he had spent using Hirenkyaku and readying himself. So if Alex was right, like he normally was, then this kid was a Failure. A ranged battle was what this was going to have to come down too. But.. Alex may not have had the best ability to sense energy, but even he could feel the pressure of power coming from this kid. This was going to be fun.
Remaining Reiatsu: 3,750 / 3,000 -50 for Hirenkyaku + 800 from Quincy Cross + Spirit Fragment
Impo's jaw was hanging loose, as he listened to the man talk. This man... this monster, he was.. he was... "You're just fucking with me." He said is a disbelieving tone. His was eye twitching in anger, as he failed to comprehend the absurdity oh this man. He was bored? He was bored!? The failure felt his face contort in rage, as his body began to glow red. It had taken him months to get his emotions under control enough for him to stop glowing all the time, and this subhuman bastard managed to undo all that progress in a few words!? Impo was beyond mad.
He summoned another sword in his right hand, before stabbing both of his weapons into the asphalt below him. They sunk into the road like a hot knife through butter. He pulled two silver tubes out of his left pocket, tossing one into his right hand, all while glaring up at the man. These were Ginto Tubes, and he was glad that he held onto them for all these years. He placed them into the hilts of the Holy Blades, the weapons absorbing them greedily. The weapons began to let off a golden glow, before they floated up, hilts reaching Impo's eye level. The right one spun up, tip facing Alexander, before rocketing up to stab him. The other began to lazily float around the failure, as if it were a satellite in his orbit.
The blade heading towards the Quincy was moving at a speed of 700. But this wasn't enough for the young man. He decided that he was give him a Failure's Gift. A sphere of energy about the size of Impo appeared above him, before turning into water and splashing to the ground around him in a ring. The liquid began to shake an bubble violently, spinning around the failure like a vicious river current. Then, without warning, thousands of gallons of water started to shoot into the air from the ring. It was like an ocean was forming in the sky with how much there was.
Twelve hundred square feet of water hovered in the air, over four miles of water shaped like a perfect bubble. This was Impo's flood, transformed into water through his technique, A Failure's Gift. The water was to massive that it blotted out the sky, no light was able to pass through. It was bigger than any skyscraper in the city, and shrouded the area in darkness. It stayed there for a beat more, before it exploded towards the Quincy like a violent tidal wave, aiming to crush only the two blocks where Alex, and only Alex, was occupying. It careened at him with a speed of 1200, and if it hit Alexander, it would crush him with a continuous force of 315 strength.
A small cyclone of water surrounded Impo, stopping at his shoulders in height. He didn't need to see the battle, per say, but his normal senses were higher than his energy sense, so he felt better being able to see what was going on. If Alex was caught, he would be trapped and unable to escape from the watery prison, drowning in Impo's flood. If he did manage to move out of the way, the water and the Holy Sword, would continue follow the man in several large tentacles, as the majority of the water hung above them in the air, not spreading down the streets, but instead overtop buildings, not touching them in anyway, but floating above them, spreading out.
Holy Blade of the Light: 100, 2 ginto tubes A Failure's Gift: 400 1/5
Technique Description and Effects: [The basis of this technique is reiatsu. What one can do with the byproduct of one's life essence. Everyone is different, yet one fact remains true for each individual: the element in which your reiatsu manifests as. Every spirit manifests itself as wind while outside of the body. This is what allows one to influence the air to increase the gravity around them. It's also the reason that a normal person is unable to detect a spirit with a majority of their senses. This ability can change that, at a cost. The use of this can change the element of your own spiritual pressure into one of four other things, while master's of this technique can change others.
For water, the flood does not change much. The most apparent change for the flood from a pretty light show to liquid matter, regardless of flood ability. It does not change the flood ability, but it changes any solid construct flood would create with it's ability into water, but not its powers. With this, it is still possible to move through, unlike earth. For the things moving through the, however, will be reduced to one fourth of what it normally is. The flood is also able to be used as a weapon, even without the ability of the flood. The impact with carry a fourth of the user's rs, and act as blunt force. This can also carry weights that str can, if the weight can be carried by str(1/4 the rs). This counts as a long term stat changer.
How to use technique: [The original caster can pass change the properties of one's reiatsu of a willing non failure participant once per thread, in a non-combat situation. The process leaves the two completely immobile, and unable to fight anything off if they were attacked. The failure casting however, can do the same for himself in the same amount of time. The failure, however, is not restricted in their mobility, but loses the use of their flood for two posts, as in the post you cast it, and to the end of your following post.
In combat, you can activate your element of choice by paying 400 reshi. It lasts five posts before it deactivates, and you can reuse it. This does not include earth. While active you gain both the positives and the negatives, and are unable to turn it off until the post have worn off. This ability takes up one tech slot as its name, followed by the element chosen.]
Technique Drawbacks: {[Stated above, plus you lose the ability to use gravitational pressure until your reshi is returned to its natural state, and will render all spirits visible as the element chosen. Can only have one chosen element at a time, and are unable to have it altered aside from another failure with this same technique.]
Made By: Impossible
Reserved: [Yes]
New Powers: [Impo considers himself to be incredibly smart, and even if that isn't entirely true, Impo's flood reflects that mindset. His flood is formless in nature, taking the appearance of water, despite having no mass, making it translucent. Unlike a lot of failures, Impo's flood can be controlled mentally, making it as large or as small as he wants, within reason. The speed of the flood is 200 per class.
Most of the things his flood do revolve around his instincts. What Impo's flood does, is that anything inside his flood are subject to his will, and will do as he commands. This is because Impo has been gifted with telekinesis. Impo can control any number of objects that come into contact with his flood, being only limited to how much reiatsu and focus he has. The max area of the flood is equal to his reiatsu strength in square feet, and most usually takes the shape of a dome around Impo.
This does not make the failure all powerful though. Impo is unable to move other spiritual beings under normal conditions. The only way he has the ability to do so is, if they permit themselves to be moved, have less remaining reiatsu than Impo's flood has reiatsu strength, see the fourth paragraph, dead, or unconscious. This applies to any objects they have on their person as well. The speed in which he can move objects is dependent on how much reiatsu he pays.
The faster he wants to move something, the more is costs to do. For 150 reiatsu, Impo can move something that's come into contact with his flood with a speed of 800, per post. This is his average speed to move things. By doubling the cost, the speed increases to 1600 per post. On top of this, the items keep their original durability and offensive power, with the flood doing noting to increase the damage it deals.
Impo does have the ability to manipulate and control something like, say, a cero blast that enters his flood. The problem is that his flood stat acts as half of what is actually should. Meaning, anything that has more than that can enter and remain unaffected.
He obviously can just pay more to control it, 200 per thing to use his full reiatsu strength, but he can't control explosions, or things gaseous in nature. He can only control solids, liquids, and energy based attacks. As abilities are finicky, he only has the ability to manipulate any ability not his own for one post. And that's the post he 'captured it'. He cannot use the full strength of his reiatsu for spiritual beings. The more things Impo tries to control however, the harder it is to keep control over them. For every object after the first one Impo manipulates, the speed in which he can move them drops by 200 speed. Once he hits 0 speed, he can no longer maintain control, preventing him from using his flood for three posts.
He is able to manipulate objects however he pleases with a more focused variant of manipulation. If he wants to manipulate a doll, he can make it dance as if it were alive. If he gets a ball of yarn, he can unravel it and turn it into a scarf if he so chose. He can break things with this ability, and he can force them back together, so long as they have less power than he does. Impo does have the ability to manipulate himself as well. When moving himself, his flood loses the ability to move. Objects under Impo's influence cannot be moved outside his flood, or will lose any and all effects that came with said influence. The cost for fine manipulation is double what it would be if he was manipulating anything else normally.

Looks like Alex had touched a nerve. Watching this weirdo kid's face contort with rage brought a smile to Alex’s own. However a few interesting things of note occured. Firstly, the kid summoned up yet another sword out of seemingly thin air. Alex blinked. Why summon a second sword? Oh, he realized why right away. This kid wasn’t going to actually swing the sword himself. Also were those Ginto Tubes he was using? Now where on earth did he gets his hands on those? ”Oho. Those are Ginto Tubes. Is someone playing Quincy?” Alexander took the moment to suck in some more reiatsu though his Cross and Fragment. He watched as the swords began to levitate following the admission of the Ginto Tubes, and Alex immediately realized what was about to happen. Kinda predictable honestly. In fact he was already putting some muscle into his legs. As the floating sword fired itself towards Alex, the Quincy simply decided to get out of dodge.
Like before he would vanish, letting the sword cut through the light pole he had been on, and would reappear some distance away on the street. Hirenkyaku really was the most superior of the Step Techniques. ”You’ll have to do better than that mister...uh?” Alex asked, realizing he didn’t even know this dumb kids name. But then he got to watch as Impossible was gathering his ability above him and turning it into water. Alex blinked, raised an eyebrow, and extended his right hand a little alongside. Mächtiger Pfeil Alexander commanded to himself mentally, causing ten eight foot long arrows to appear around Alex’s person. As Impossible gathered together his power into a impressive sized bubble of water, Alex decided to see just how strong that bubble was.
Just as Impossible released his tidal wave, Alexander made a slight movement with his right hand to send the ten massive javelin-like arrows at the lad. Sure, there was a lot of water but would it be able to stop this attack? Mächtiger Pfeil were strong enough to easily punch through the likes of Kido and armor. Would the reduced power of Impossible’s water be able to stop the ten, 800 speed, arrows hurtling right for him? If the water only had a force of 315, then it stood to reason that the arrows would be able to punch through whatever water Impossible was protecting himself and hit the kid. However, that didn’t mean the water heading towards Alex was gonna stop. Alexander once again vanished after firing his arrows just as the water slammed into the streets of Karakura.
He opted to head upwards this time, standing atop the ceiling of a building. He gained more distance from Impossible with that maneuver as well. Of course, that annoying sword was back at it again alongside some tendrils of water. ”Yeesh.” Alexander said to himself as he once again, for the third time, used a Hirenkyakyu to dodge the incoming attacks. Thankfully the water was predictable, and the kids aim with the sword was poor and lousy. Heading even further away from Impossible, Alexander landed atop the roof of a car. A car flashing blue and red lights. A cop car, of all things. ”Hey, what are you doing up there?” the cop questioned, confused and angry, prompting Alex to look around. He’d now gotten so far from Impossible that he was outside the two destroyed blocks and was in a non damaged part of Karakura. A part that had people. Oh the ideas that he was suddenly starting to have.
Remaining Reiatsu: 4,000 / 3,000 +800 for Quincy Cross + Fragment -400 for Mächtiger Pfeil -150 for Hirenkyaku x3
A look of frustration crossed Impo's face, as the madman dodged out of the way of his flying sword, leaving the blade to instead carve a few feet off of the top of the streetlight he had been standing on, earning a wince from the young man. Property damage was certainly not something he was trying to cause. Of course, it would be hard to notice one broken street lamp amidst all the destruction the lunatic was causing, but still. As he man used some step technique he'd yet to see, he called out to the young failure. This time, confusion covered his face at the strange word he said. "What the Hell is a Quincy!?" Impo yelled out to the retreating man.
What an odd word. It meant five, but why was he calling him... "Crazy person, just forget it." He said under his breath. He knew better than anyone not to trust the words of someone so clearly off their rocker. Not to mention evil, but that was obvious. Then he remembered something someone said to him a while back. It was a German word, much like this one. Vandenreich; that was who Mon said was chasing her, wasn't it? German aside, he didn't know for sure, but he wasn't going to ask in the middle of a fight. Probably. Definitely not right now, because the psycho was charging up some sort of attack.
What Impo could only describe as overly long arrows began swinning around the brunet. Eight feet in length, they looked more like skinny ballistic missiles hovering around the man. Which was an apt description, as they all suddenly flew at the Failure. They were fast, he would give them that, but not so fast that he was unable to react. He likely could have responded with a cero, consuming them all in a sapphire blue blast, but that would likely destroy the building that the man was standing atop of. It was a risky gamble to begin with, and would cause mass destruction even if it did succeed. With failure lying down that pathway, Impo chose the safer path, and used Ulcera to vanish. The arrows pierced the ground he was standing on not a second later.
It was always a trip seeing the world between worlds when he activated this technique. Slipping between dimensions, while still being able to see and hear everything that was happening on earth made him feel like a ghost, like he didn't exist. It was scary. It was also impossible to control him flood in this state, so he reappeared not a moment later on the top of a nearby rooftop. Not the one that the Quincy had been on, because that was currently underwater. With a gasp, he willed the water off the building, stopping it from being crushed by his flood. He heard the building creak in relief as the pressure on it vanished.
Impo felt out for the man with his energy sensory, and spotted him down the road. "I'm going to-" ''Calm down.' His eyes widened, as he heard the voice of reason in his head. 'You're too strong to be letting this guy get to you like this. At the rate you're going, you are going to destroy more of the city then the guy you're defending it from.' His words had the desired effects, and Impo calmed down. He needed to be a focused weapon, not a raging storm. His reason was right, if he kept this up, he would end up as the destroyer, not the man he was chasing after. He took a deep breath, and sighed. He felt his rage slip away. He was still angry, but he would use that to focus him.
He recalled his Flood to him, and the water vanished from the sky. He didn't need that much power at the moment, and it was better to have it available at a moments notice. He jumped up, as a pool of water formed under him, and his sword returned to his hand. Normally, he would have passed through his Flood, but now that it had mass, he could have it carry him. He had it take the shape of a bubble surrounding him. He willed the bubble forward, zipping towards his Quincy enemy. It flew down to street level, appearing twenty feet in front of the arrow user. He gave the man a glare, as he was now surrounded by normal people, as he stood atop a cop car.
Now that he could think clearly, he could feel that the man was... absorbing reiatsu? That was bad. Impo didn't have a large reiatsu pool as it was, and the man had already been ahead of him in that department to begin with. The fact that he was restoring it was very concerning. If Impo wasn't careful, this would become a war of attrition, and that wasn't a war he could win, especially since it appeared that this wan was willing to take hostages like he was. The bubble opened up, so he could speak to the man. "I recalled my Flood, so leave the people of Karakura out of this." He said, glaring at man.
As he spoke, however, the second sword that the man had avoided earlier would be flying the long way around, hiding above the buildings, just out of their sight. It would make its way behind the unnamed man, hovering above him like the Sword of Damocles. It would fly down towards the man, aiming to stab into the back of his neck, right where it met his shoulders. The sword would let out a faint whistling sound as it descended. The blade would go no further than one foot from where the man stood if it did manage to connect. If it didn't, and the man managed to avoid his sneaky attack, Impo would launch a ten foot sphere of water towards the man, generated from the flood that was holding him up.
