((Training for CTP!))
"Alrighty, let’s see who I’m workin’ with today.”
Raion sat in “his” office—though he was officially on probation and thus a Captain in name only, he had already reclaimed the place as his own—looking over some paperwork that Kouen had set aside for him. As a part of his probation ruling, the Captain-but-not-Captain was required to show dedication towards Soul Society’s improvement through the training and improvement of their armed forces. In this case, Kouen had looked into a number of candidates who showed promise in the lion’s particular brand of combat expertise, Kido, and made a list of those who would not only benefit from some direct training with Raion, but also showed a fair amount of natural aptitude themselves, making them easier to teach in the Captain’s unusual manner.
Raion had picked from the list in a manner befitting him; he had simply closed his eyes and stabbed a finger down on the paper as his method of selection. And today, it looked like one “Ranth Amanite” was the lucky winner. A little bit of digging had shown that the Shinigami was one of the few members of the currently thin-staffed Kido Corps, and that he had shown some notable proficiency with Kido in both his natural casting and his Zanpaktou’s synergy with such a practitioner. If nothing else, Raion could see that this guy was going to be something, one day; heck, he might even be a Vice Captain or Captain, with the proper teaching and continued dedication. Go figure; there had been something of a drought of Captain-quality talents lately, if reports were to be believed, aside from those who already held the spots. Perhaps this was a sign of a resurgence.
Well, talented or not, Raion was going to go and meet this Ranth fellow and show him a proper day of training, lion-style. Oh sure, the man would probably end up bruised, battered, intoxicated, and perhaps somewhat scandalized by the end of it, but it was all in good show when it came to Raion. The feline Captain grinned; it’d been far too long since he’d actually associated with his fellow Shinigami one-on-one instead of his usual revels, and it was high time he fixed that. Who knew; maybe Ranth was going make the probation work something more interesting.
Sliding his oversized chair back—anyone in the room would note that most of the furnishings were half again their normal size, in order to accommodate an almost eight-foot lion who weighed three or more times as much as the average person—Raion grabbed his Zanpaktou, both blade and sake jug, and hung them at his waist before making his way to the door. He halted on the way, however, his eyes catching sight of an object sitting on a stand to the side of his desk. A sword the size of any normal person’s Zanpaktou—at least compared to Raion’s enormous weapon—sat within easy reach of the Captain’s seat, its hilt wound with a sky-blue ribbon whose ends trailed from the bottom.
The Zanpaktou, Bachi, had belonged to the Captain’s late wife, Tomoe, and had been placed within sight so that Raion could always remind himself of what his actions had cost him in the past. It was a symbol of self-discipline and a gentle nudge to be mindful of his actions. Though it did little to temper the lion’s free spirit and constant inebriation, at the same time it made him keep in mind that his decisions, no matter the good intent. Before leaving, Raion bowed his head slightly and said a prayer to the departed, an oddly solemn action from the normally boisterous, noisy, and besotted feline. Then he was on his way.
It took all of five steps from the door of his office for Raion to grab the sake jug from his hip and tilt it back, the cork coming free easily as he drained a large amount of the liquid within. Already he could feel the tingle of inebriation, the slight fogging of the senses, the loosening of the chains of inhibition. It was like stepping under a cold waterfall after being in a hot sauna; the shock of alcohol suddenly coursing through his system sent a shiver up and down the lion’s spine almost immediately.
“Ahhh, that’s the good stuff!” Raion’s shout drew attention from everyone in the Squad 9 barracks, though most just smiled good-naturedly at their Captain’s usual behavior, while others shook their heads in bemusement. A few bets even went out as to what the lion’s mischief for the day was, given that he rarely left without causing some sort of trouble. Raion just grinned, even throwing a few coins into the pot for the fun of it; after all, even he didn’t know what sort of incidents would occur around him! The Captain just laughed and waved to his subordinates, giving them his usual toothy grin and a casual thumbs-up before making his way out the door.
It didn’t take long to get to the Kido Corps’ main facility, where Raion figured he’d be able to find his trainee, or at least someone who knew where the guy would be. The main gate was shut, but no problem; wooden barriers posed no threat to Raion. He could open it, of course; he doubted it was locked. Even if it was, knocking would probably send a message to whoever was present, and they’d open it for him. But what sort of entrance was that? The Captain had never been one for quiet, formal interaction; he lived his life loud. Also, he was already drunk now, and other options seemed more fun. So, while knocking or simply entering were all well and good, Raion decided that he’d just make enough noise to ensure everyone knew he was there. And with that, he placed his hands on the wooden door.
“Open sesame!”
With that line, he mentally cast Hado #63: Raikoho, centering the origin in his hands. But with his mastery of the technique and his high skill with Kido, he altered the spell slightly; rather than being a concentrated bolt of lightning that would not only obliterate the door but probably everything behind it as well, including any unfortunate Shinigami standing in the courtyard, he instead spread it outwards, increasing its scope enormously to dilute the power. Thus, it was more light and flash filling the courtyard with static and the occasional electrical discharge, causing only minor burns here and there from electrocution.
Oh, and of course the initial force behind the attack, which hit the door head on. The wood that had stood in Raion’s way was completely obliterated, thousands of shards and splinters raining into the courtyard and probably causing its own show of discomfort should anyone be unfortunate enough to be in the area. Not to mention the reverberating BOOM that filled the entire courtyard and probably echoed through the building itself. For those inside, it was probably rather alarming, given that their front door had just exploded.
Meanwhile, Raion pushed all those worries aside, stepping through the entrance and into the courtyard before raising his voice, letting it echo for all to hear. "Yooooo! Is there a ‘Ranth Amarite’ around? I’m here to show him a good time!”
