The instant Douma had spoken, he was aware of his mistake. He had slipped up in a very stupid way. Maxtrillion had been testing him, and he failed by only exposing one reiatsu signature. There were far better ways for him to protect Shizuka, but he couldn’t let his silly blunder faze him. Shizuka would have to take care of herself. If she couldn’t, Douma’d be wasting his time with her. She was one of Xcution’s Seven Guns, after all.
“Go kill the Shinigami. Bring his head to Darnell.” The task would be easy enough, but Douma didn’t intend to carry it out. Killing the soul reaper wouldn’t do much at all. It felt like a waste. People were always worth less dead than they were alive, and Douma was the type to extract their value before killing them off. The Shinigami was there for a reason, and Douma intended to know what that reason was. After all, Soul Society must have had intelligence on the war that was about to break out, but Douma didn’t have an agent in the Gotei 13. Not yet. I need to meet with that Shinigami kid. I doubt that he’s a Vizard yet, but he’ll be useful… thought the mercenary as he took his time approaching the soul reaper.
Naturally, Douma hid his energy in order to allow him to sneak up on his target. However, just as his spiritual presence disappeared, the shinigami escaped with a step technique. It was very fast and sudden. There was a good chance that had to do with Douma’s suppression of his own reiatsu, but there was a second possibility. After all, Maxtrillion had activated a strange technique that turned his eyes white. Douma studied the man with his energy sensory, trying to decipher information about Maxtrillion’s abilities. After all, with his level of analysis, he could tell the nature of most techniques based on how reiatsu flowed through the user’s body.
But his analysis didn’t prepare him for Maxtrillion’s sudden influx in reiatsu, causing an incredible anxiety to grip him. He felt very powerful. Not as powerful as Captain Commander Ninge, De-Mona, Anarchy, but the way he flexed his reiatsu was terrifying for all those nearby. Could it possibly be a martial discipline technique? Douma knew what they were, but this was the first time that he had encountered them. After all, it was too powerful to be an energy generate technique, the traditional spiritual tool for fullbringers. Martial Discipline techniques were reserved for the elite, and Douma needed information about them. Not for himself, but for his allies. Shizuka, first and foremost, but then other agents working under him. There were a few humans he knew who would benefit greatly.
Fortunately, Shizuka realized that she was outclassed solely in terms of knowledge. She couldn’t compete with the Martial Discipline techniques at her current level, and so she made a tactical retreat. As she left, Douma approached Maxtrillion. “The Shinigami ran the moment I approached. I assume that other agents in Soul Society, possibly multiple Captains, may make an appearance. Those are the ones we should be cautious of.” Douma figured that it was even more suspicious to address Shizuka’s escape, so he stayed silent about the matter. He obviously knew that Maxtrillion had tried to pursue someone, and that individual made an escape. Trying to play dumb wouldn’t help him. What would help was getting his next orders. It was doubtful that he’d win the Wayne Gang’s trust, so he’d just do his job and watch his own back for the time being.
