I knew we were going to meet again eventually, but...
Zeich stood on another catwalk in a room similar to the first; an enormous machine with a control panel stood in the center, leading down into an unknown liquid below. The difference this time was that instead of the trio of guards he had faced previously, now the Shinigami was face-to-face with two humans that he had left not too long ago. One of the men was indistinguishable in a crowd, another hired hand wielding a pistol, just like those that Zeich had encountered in the bar the day before. The Third Seat had thought he had eliminated all those who were present at the time, but it was possible that one or two had gotten away or hadn't been sent in. No, what was more important to him was the other man standing in front of the control panel, and that was why Zeich paused.
“Nice of you to finally show up. Come back to resolve your tab? You still owe me for two bottles of booze.” The bartender from the pub that Zeich had initially investigated had made a reappearance; previously, the man had escaped through a hidden door while his lackeys had attempted to kill the Shinigami. The two had not actually engaged in combat, so Zeich couldn't be sure of the man's abilities. He had to be a combatant, if he was here as a guard; one pistol-wielding soldier was hardly a match for the Third Seat. No, the bartender had left last time to avoid involvement, not necessarily because of weakness. What could he do, now that he was here to defend the portal's generator?
“You must be still seeing double from the smoke of your torched bar; last I checked, I only ordered a single bottle.”
Not the best argument, master. He could charge you for the entire bar instead of two bottles...
I paid for one bottle, and used one bottle. The rest were just collateral damage. Haiiro's ash was already coalescing around Zeich as the Third Seat prepared his offense, scanning over the two opponents. The pistol user would be the obvious target seeing as he had an apparent weapon, but that did not mean the bartender would be ignored. Far from it, he would earn more of Zeich attention than the gunman, who could be dealt with quickly. In fact, the Shinigami didn't even use his Zanpaktou to do so, instead drawing the pistol he had retrieved in the last encounter with the barman. Though he was no expert gunman, Zeich didn't need to be on such a narrow catwalk; short of the other two possessing the ability to use air ground with a sufficient amount of speed, there was little room to dodge or escape pursuit, and a straight line's trajectory was easy. Further, the Third Seat's bullets were the kind that fragmented upon firing, also confiscated prior; even with no skill using guns, Zeich would have a hard time missing with bullets that spread out upon being fired.
A Shunpo had the Third Seat closing the distance in a moment, his ash clinging to his body before he started moving to keep it around him. The difference between the 4000 speed he could move in a Shunpo and the 600 the ash could move was substantial, and by causing it to cling to his body like he would to mask his presence, Zeich was able to move it to a key position with him quickly before detaching it to let it work remotely. Indeed, the Shunpo had him step between the bartender and the other soldier, the ash of Haiiro's true form wrapped around the Shinigami's body. What was more, one arm was pointed towards the guard, while the other was pointed towards the bartender. However, the one facing the guard was empty; the gun that Zeich had was actually pointed towards the bartender, and the trigger was pulled at nearly point-blank range.
The guard, on the other hand, would not be so lucky as to deal with a mundane gun; instead, Haiiro's ash pooled in Zeich's palm and formed a blade that stabbed forward into the man's throat to sever his windpipe. The Third Seat had no intention of sparing this particular guard; he knew the bartender had seen him during their previous fight and he knew the man's malicious nature, as well as his devotion to the army's cause. No, these two together were immediate hostiles, and Zeich had no intention of holding back. Instead, the guard would find his throat stabbed clean through, allowing a portion of Haiiro's ash to flood his lungs and stab through them for a fatality should he not avoid the attack.
The bartender would not likely go down as easily, though Zeich had been surprised before; instead, judging by the fact that the other thug at the bar had obeyed him previously, the man held some position of authority with the army. In an army, authority came with power, and so Zeich operated under the expectation that the barkeep was more powerful than expected, even if his hands were occupied cleaning the tumbler. No, in the event that the man survived the first attack, the second would come into play as two more portions of Haiiro's ash would extend from the Third Seat's arm, forming into twin lances that would impale the man through his shoulders if he did not avoid the attack. Any opening would be enough for a fatal blow after that, once Haiiro got into the barkeep's body, so Zeich aimed for the area of greatest mass; all he had to do was land a successful strike, and that would be it.
