As soon as Kyousei gave his answer, the mask was lowered once more. The Shinigami would be left with a slight glare in his eyes, as if he had looked into the sun itself and the aftereffect still created the telltale white spot before his vision. He would be unable to remember what he had seen beneath the mask in any form of detail, only knowing that he had seen perfection incarnate. He couldn’t even bring to mind the barest image as the golden mask was replaced, though he would feel distinct disappointment as he could no longer see it. However, he was free from the mesmerizing spell, and time resumed like normal. It was strange that everything had frozen in that brief instant for such a strange question, though.
The cloaked figure just stood there despite its question, as if it had been answered satisfactorily. It made no move to strike as it had before, instead just staring at Kyousei, the exaggerated grin on its mask seeming to mock him more and more. And then the real attack came, though the Vice Captain would not have seen it with his basic human senses; the shadows between the trees came alive as knives shot out from their concealment in a number of directions, slicing into the boy should he not avoid them. They came from his sides, from behind him, and some even in front; though he could dodge some and probably avoid death, several would slice into his body at various points depending on how he dodged. It was impossible to avoid all of them, with his low senses, and even his reasonably high mental reflexes wouldn’t come in time.
As soon as the knives were gone, the figure was moving again, its speed astonishing as it closed the gap between itself and Kyousei. One of the knives that had been released was caught from the air and brought about in a sudden throw that would have it embedded in the Vice Captain’s chest should he not move aside. Even as he was dodging that one, another came from behind, thrown as the mysterious being used its unnatural movement abilities to catch a second one and release it. This one would be aimed for Kyousei’s uninjured shoulder, and be only two seconds behind the first strike; there would be time to dodge, but it would be very minimal. And regardless of whether or not the Vice Captain managed to avoid the knife blades, he would find himself unable to avoid the next attack.
An arm wrapped around Kyousei’s neck, and a bladed point was pressed to his throat. The cloaked figure could have simply slashed the boy’s throat open right then and there, but it seemed to pause, as if hesitating. The reason was obvious enough; it was about then that Shinsei would arrive, and his presence alone gave the being pause as it considered its next option. The Zero Division member would find himself faced with an unusual circumstance, though not likely one he would hesitate for more than a second at, given his resolve. The other Shinigami he had gone to team up with was being held at knifepoint by an unusual figure, and judging by the boy’s wounds, the knives weren’t natural. The blood flowing from them was consistent, without ebb; likely, the blades were supernatural in some way, and caused pronounced and constant bleeding to drain a target dry. A stab to the throat would likely be completely fatal.
Of course, that one second of hesitation would be all that the figure needed as it lifted its free hand up to remove its mask. For Shinsei, who was looking directly at the man, time would stop completely. Light would fill his vision, perfect beauty that would stab straight to the heart of even the Zero Division member. It was like the joy of his wife’s smile combined with the innocence that Shinsei had left behind long ago; there was rapture and peace and joy filling the man’s very soul as he looked upon what had to be the face of perfection itself. It would hold him fast, and time would stop as those perfect eyes met his. Lips that had no right to exist in something so lowly as a human’s vision moved, and the voice came once again. “ Which do you prefer, a red cloak or a blue cloak?”
“Sir! We’ve just received a Hell Butterfly from Vice Captain Kitso!” The man from the Squad Twelve ran into his superior’s office, holding up a sheet of paper that was likely the received report. “He is requesting a removal of his limiter, as there is a very real risk to his life. His message says that it is urgent, and that he is away from human habitation.” This was an unusual request; normally, when one was sent to the World of the Living with a limiter in place, it was done so expecting that the high-seated officer would be able to handle whatever threat was present under the limitations given. When a request to have a limitation removed came, it meant something unusual had happened, or something had gone wrong. It was a grave request.
“…Request approved. Remove Vice Captain Kyousei Kitso’s limiter!”
For Kyousei, who hadn’t been looking into the being’s face, time didn’t stop. Shinsei would just appear to freeze up for a moment, the scarcest of seconds, yet from the Zero Division’s point of view the moment would last until he answered the question. The Vice Captain didn’t dare move right away, as there was a knife point pressed to his throat, and he was starting to become dizzy from blood loss. However, he would have to act soon; if he didn’t, the masked being could kill him at any time. Atop that, Kyousei wouldn’t know Shinsei’s disposition; if the man was willing to make the sacrifice, he could simply eliminate both hostage and captor in order to complete his mission. Things were looking bleak for the Vice Captain.
And then the rush of power came; it was like a key turning in the lock of Kyousei’s soul as his powers were suddenly released in their full strength. His spiritual presence grew immensely compared to what it had been beneath its limiter, and as the last of the surge faded, the Vice Captain felt complete, his power restored to him. He was still held at knifepoint, but maybe with the limiter removed he had a chance at survival.
