“Slow inhale….hold…slow exhale…,”
All noise was silenced, all motion stilled. The anarchy and chaos about her seemed to dissipate in to the dark and the spirit was left with nothing but the crisp scent of the night air. The atmosphere was calm and vast, carrying a sense of seclusion with it. No, not the kind of seclusion that brings on loneliness and despair, but rather the kind that brings a feeling of safety and a sense of self. Parting her lips lightly, the cool air danced inside, floating against her tongue, cooling the warm organ. Strangely, though, there was a taste. Not one that can be described, but one all the same. It was a strange feeling, one that excited euphoria and wonder. Ah, what a childish thing, to be so in awe by the flavor of air. But then, perhaps being childish was the best thing anyone could ever be. To be forever curious, to be forever innocent…that would be pure splendor. When had her inner child died? Had it been when she awoke in Seireitei or later, when Yukata had taken her in? Perhaps it had died off sometime in her human life, though she wouldn’t remember if that was the case. However, though Nami was clueless to the when, she could guess the how. Innocence and curiosity, in almost all cases, murder each other in the most wretched, gory manner. Curiosity leads to discovery, which tears innocence limb from limb innocence. And when one has been soiled, they abandon curiosity, leaving it to die, afraid of what they may discover now that they see the world unclouded. How sad…
Ocher eyes opened slowly, a new clarity shining in them. A quick meditation session and vomited philosophy always calmed her, flushing away all insecurity like a shower does the day’s grime. The captain scanned the battle field as if looking in to the store window of a pharmacy, no expression painted on her face. The funniest part was she knew that she looked more monotone than Shade did. After all, Nami could feel the intense glare against her back. In all honesty, it nearly broke her calm demeanor, laughter attempting to break away. She held it though, choosing to test the limits of the seated officer’s blandness. His anger seemed to swell and his aura became darker, but Nami stood still. How could he be angry? It was truly humorous that his feelings were so wonky! He reacted so oddly! Then again, as far as she knew, all Shade could feel was nothing and irritation. Perhaps he just couldn’t feel gratitude. Perhaps she’d learn in time and perhaps from unraveling his emotions, she’d unknot her own.
Oh, hello there curiosity, so nice of you to join us again.
”You shouldn’t have saved me, Ketsueki-taicho. You are nothing but an inconvenience...,”
The woman’s eyes stayed fixed on the landscape before her, following the battling figures lazily. Inside, however, the laughter became louder. Poor thing was more confused than she was! Willing to throw his life away over what, pride? How laughable! He’d rather be dead and remembered as a valiant warrior than be alive and seen as a wimp? Oh, he was like a petulant child, still so concerned about what people thought of him. Nami closed her eyes and smirked, scoffing lightly. This was getting to be too much to ignore. She’d have to reply if she had any hope of not choking on laughs in mere moments. The spirit opened her mouth, only to have a large blast of energy envelope the battle field. The woman watched calmly as it spelled doom for many of the fighters, closing here eyes once the large part of the attack was over. She tried to speak again, but once more, she was interrupted. However, this time it wasn’t by an attack, it was by the young male behind her. God, why did he always manage to do that…?
”I should have died there...,”
“No, you would have died there. Who is to say you should have? Perhaps I was supposed to save you? Perhaps I should have done what I did? Don’t be a wise ass prophet…,”
The blue-haired vixen thought to herself, though despite the sharp thoughts, she was still terribly amused by all this. Judging by his intense pause, there would be more comedy to come. Splendid.
“You, Ketsueki-taicho, have stolen my death from me...,”
A small snicker escaped her, though it was brief and hardly anything to be noted. In truth, though, she was just about ready to choke on laughs just as she has predicted. Nami turned abruptly, grinning widely as she noted their positioning. She stood above him, tall and proud, as he sit on the ground among the mud and shit. Oh, the horrid irony! She only wished he could feel the shame she had. Her lips curled up higher as she contemplated what to say. How would she push the lime (a white chalky substance which can burn live tissue) deeper in to his wound? Her earlier thoughts returned to her and she decided she’d share her opinion with the pathetic mongrel beneath her. Nami gave him no chance to interrupt her this time, speaking quickly and with great enough force to send a demon off with its tail between its legs.
“Stolen your death from you? What a ridiculous statement, Kawada. You’d throw everything away just to be remembered as some brave warrior? Bull shit. People would think of you for no longer than a few years. You haven’t been here long enough for anyone to care. What were you hoping for, a page in a book? You have only been a seated officer for what, a few years? You are not even a god damned lieutenant! No book will hold your name and no stories will be told of you. Not now at least. And fuck, even if you do something worthy of being recorded someday in the far off future, history will forget it. I promise you, in time, even Captain Commanders will be forgotten. We are temporary, and no matter what, we cannot make a permanent impression. So swallow that pathetic pride of yours and don’t go killing yourself over some fleeting crap,”
Somehow, she had worked herself up mid-speech. Perhaps it was because she had reminded herself that even she’d be gone some day or maybe it was just the shear intensity of her words. The spirit panted lightly, catching her breathe after having hurled all of her thoughts on to the pale man before her. She watched as he grasped his head, unsure if it was because of her words or some other reason. No matter, she still had something to say.
“…but if you still think I ‘robbed’ you, please, let me return death to you…,”
