((Long post ahoy… and this is AFTER I cut my outline in half. Because of that, I did skimp on a few details here and there… but I just wanted to get the post out at this point. Let me know if you have any questions.))
One demon had been dealt with already, and that signaled the end of two parts to Yoko’s battle. The first part to end was her battle with the female demon, but calling that a battle wasn’t very fair. What was far more of a reward in her eyes was that it was clear this had broken whatever semblance of honor the male demon had left in him. All it had taken was hurting someone else. While the fires of hell may have burned away his care for his own life, this demon was naïve enough to care for others of his kind. They were nothing but monsters in Yoko’s eyes, and the idea that they could care about each other was nothing short of ludicrous. If the bible was even close to correct about hell, emotions like affection could only be the result of madness.
And that madness was now oh so present in the male demon. He freed himself from the body that he had been in; this was the one that Yoko believed to be possessed. With herculean strength he hurled the body towards the fullbringer, but she did not dodge. No, she believed this was a human being, and that possibly meant they were still alive. Instead of dodging, Yoko foolishly grabbed onto the body that sailed by. Her strength was far, far too low to stop it right away… or ever. While Yoko wasn’t a medical expert or anything, she could tell fairly easily that this…thing… wasn’t a living being. Whatever it was didn’t feel human. She couldn’t feel it moving at all, and it seemed strangely alien to her. It could have just been a corpse… but either way, it wasn’t worth saving anymore.
All that was figured out while Yoko was sailing through the air trying to stop this body, and now herself too, from slamming into something. It was a good thing that she had decided the body didn’t need saving, because she was in a bad spot herself. The force of the body was simply too great for her to stop easily, and so she opted to abandon it, letting the object go careening off into the distance. It wasn’t all bad though. Sure, she hadn’t saved anyone just then, but this seemingly bizarre tactic had gotten her a good deal of distance from her opponent. She had enough distance, in fact, that she was actually able to react to his attempt to tackle her into another part of the mall.
Too bad her reaction wasn’t good enough. Her attempted dodge was to simply hurdle the speeding old man, but it wasn’t like she could see him coming. His speed was far, far too fast for that, so she had estimated the timing based on her own speed with movement. The maximum velocity of her step technique and whatever her opponent had done were miles apart. Seriously, this guy had to be around ten times as fast as she was. Still, her dodge wasn’t a complete waste. Most of her was out of the way. Only her shins and below were clipped, but that was still enough to send her flying once more. Her path was a bit different than that of the demon. Since only the bottommost part of her was hit, and she was jumping, she flew in more of a gentle arc than a straight line. More important, she was not hit with the full force of the demon’s bull rush, nor was she the first to crash through the glass of the storefront.
Extra hang time gave her a chance to react a bit more as well. Even if the demon was the first through the breach, she was still going to be headed for a bunch of glass and shelves. Sure, she would live, but her body wasn’t so strong that she could just ignore that kind of damage. She didn’t have quite enough talent to right herself in the air either, so she couldn’t stop with air ground. There was only one option left to her. [smear:00ff00]”I am Gundam.”[/smear:007700] It was with those words that her safety from the crash into the store was guaranteed, for those were the words that released her fullbring. A green light swirled around her before taking the form of her fullbring: a human-sized version of Gundam Exia with her inside. Now safe from petty things like broken glass, Yoko careened into the store and flew through a few displays before finally coming to a stop.
The demon would realize something besides the fact that their positions had shifted. Before, he had felt plenty of emotion surging through the young fullbringer, but that was all gone. All that existed in her as the two clashed was an animalistic instinct to survive. Anger, sorrow, or whatever else was previously sensed was there no longer. Yoko was not an experienced soldier, nor was she some kind of assassin with training to cast away her emotions. This was simply her body’s autonomous reaction to a life threatening situation. When it had all been talk, she had time to think, and thus she had time for emotions. But now, in a situation as fast-paced and bloodthirsty as this fight was, there wasn’t a chance for her to even think about how she felt. Every ounce of her attention was focused on staying alive, and thus her emotions fell by the wayside. If her opponent was still paying attention to her emotions, all he would feel was a desire for blood, much the same as his own.
Cue the Music!
There was no rest for the weary. Yoko was a bit disoriented from all that flying around, but aside from a few minor bruises she was in one piece. Of course, she had her armor to thank for that. Looking around at the store they were in, it was clear that her entrance had done quite a bit of damage. Most of the store they were in had already been blown to bits just from them entering the area. From the looks of things, it was a craft store. Broken canisters of glitter slowly rained down through the air. Pipe cleaners, candles, and fabric were strewn all over the floor. Truly, the place was a wreck, and the lasers weren't even flying yet.
Debris, annoying though it was, was what saved Yoko. She had only just stood back up when she saw the demon’s incoming attack. Was it not for the art supplies fluttering in the breeze of the air conditioner, she might have missed it. But the debris was there, and so she saw the attack clearly enough. It was some kind of shockwave or air blast. Normally, it would’ve been nearly invisible, but it was impossible to miss a bunch of glitter flying at you. Though it was a fairly close call, Yoko managed to get out of the way by heading back towards the ground. She ducked underneath the incoming blast of force, landing back in a kneeling position with her right leg mostly upright and her left one on the ground.
From this position, the fullbringer saw her opponent vanish once more. She had gotten a decent feel for his speed before, and knew instantly that his movement would be almost as instantaneous as her ability to appreciate that speed. There was only one option in her mind. Reiatsu flowed out from her body into the ground around her. For the first time, she was utilizing a trick she had learned from fighting the Yellow Lantern. It was a bit more advanced than some of things she could do with this trick, but that meant it was actually effective at preventing the demon’s rush. This trick was none other than soul manipulation. All things, animate or not, had a soul that could be tapped into and controlled. In this case, she had commanded the soul of the floor around her, causing it to briefly crack and slope upwards. The final result looked like an octagon of two foot tall ramps had formed around fullbringer.
These interventions lasted just long enough to throw the demon off by just a few inches, but that was all that was needed. The incoming attack had been aimed for her chest originally, but the difference in height caused by the sloped floor around Yoko meant the blade was now on a path towards her forehead. That was where the remaining part of her defense came into play. Once more, she ducked down a bit. Her stance at that moment resembled a sprinter waiting to leave the blocks at the start of a race. Compressed as she was, Yoko was both ready to spring into action and short enough that the attack sailed overhead. That wasn’t the most important part of her creating the ramps though.
By forcing the demon to be up off the rest of the floor, she had put him at a great disadvantage, even if he didn’t realize it yet. Remember how it was mentioned that those ramps were very brief? Yeah, that’s where the real issue was. Just as quick as they had appeared, the ramps snapped back into the ground. The demon was left airborne for just a second before gravity took over, but that was all the time Yoko needed to counterattack. She willed her thrusters to activate, which took no more effort than the desire for them to be on. Green particles streamed out from her armor into the air around her as her speed increased to the same level as her reiatsu strength. Now it was up to 400, but that only altered her basic movement. It wouldn’t stack with her step techniques or anything.
It was with that newfound speed that her left leg swung forward towards the falling demon’s crotch. Yeah, Yoko wasn’t above a shot like that. If the attack hit… it wouldn’t do anything. Unknown to Yoko, the demon was both massively stronger than she was and it had a defensive technique that would nullify almost any strike she tried. Whether or not the kick landed didn’t matter much because of that defensive power, but there was another thing to worry about beyond damage. Once her foot was near her opponent, Yoko raised her other leg and blasted off to get away from her opponent. Depending on how he reacted, that could either be after the kick failed or as soon as the demon made some kind of move to get away from the kick. Either way, the output from her thrusters sent the demon one way, and her the other. It wasn’t a horrendously strong output, so it didn’t send the demon too far, but it was enough to ensure there was adequate time to get away.
Thrusters were enough to carry Yoko out of the demon’s reach within a tiny fraction of a second. 400 speed was useful like that. With her shield raised behind her head to deflect whatever she happened to smash though, which happened to be a number of shelves, each containing a random assortment of arts and crafts supplies, the still horizontal fullbringer put a good deal of distance between herself and the demon. She didn’t stop until she was probably a good 50 feet away, clear on the other side of the store. It was only once she was over there that Yoko righted herself and fired off a quick burst of shots from her gunblade. Five energy blasts, each not much bigger than a shotgun slug fired out of her gunblade towards the Arrancar. All but two would miss if he simply stood still due to the lack of accuracy in this weapon firing that fast, and the two that had a chance to hit couldn’t penetrate his defenses. It really wasn’t much use either way.
There were a few reasons that all this would work, but the biggest one was the demon’s state of mind. Even someone like Yoko who wasn’t the best at reading people could tell he was driven by rage at that moment. In that state, there was no chance he was able to think clearly enough to formulate elaborate battle plans or adjust his plans on the fly very effectively. There was also the fact that his eyes were visibly closed. Rely on nothing but his sixth sense was problematic because of Yoko’s thrusters. The entire area was now blanketed in her reiatsu that had pushed her around, and that would make precisely detecting her movements considerably more challenging. It was probably still possible for him to do it, but opening his eyes would be a big help for sure.
On top of that, there were other reasons unknown to the fullbringer that her defense and counterattack were likely successful. One of the most relevant factors was that her opponent lacked specific skill with both his own weapon and in martial arts. Yes, he had skills in parrying with weapons, but he lacked a great deal of knowledge about how to attack effectively. Combined with his current mental state, that meant his attack was far from perfectly executed, and thus easier to dodge. On the other hand, his lack of battle skills also meant he was more vulnerable to Yoko’s attack. Without the knowledge of how to execute similar moves fine-tuned in his mind, the demon would have more trouble countering them. This was especially true when compared to his opponent, who was proficient at both unarmed combat and fighting with a blade. Her attacks and defenses were both aided by her skills in those categories.
Regardless of whether or not everything worked out, Yoko was stuck on the defensive for now. She could do little but wait for her opponent’s attack to come and hope to find an opening in it.
