The Hollow had changed since Schultz had last seen it, but that was no wonder; with how quickly it had progressed during the short time the two of them had been in combat, it would have evolved by this point. Still, in the middle of battle the Espada hadn’t considered this, and was surprised when a wholly different Hollow stepped from the Gargantua that he opened up. But it wasn’t a crippling disadvantage, not by a long shot; in fact, it was all the more amusing when it began pummeling Kurosaki relentlessly, surprising the Shinigami and actually driving him back. Fists drove into flesh, and the powerful Vice-Captain was being tossed around like a rag doll. For a few moments, Schultz imagined that the Hollow would win, and in fact absorb Kurosaki’s powers to make it even more powerful.
But then all hell broke loose. The release of Kurosaki’s Bankai surprised Schultz once more; he had nothing on record about the Shinigami’s Bankai, and while this was a great opportunity to learn about it, at the same time it could prove very deadly. The enormous dragons made out of pure lightning, the sheer amount of Reiatsu filling the area… the Espada suddenly found himself shifting from confident to worried once more. It wasn’t his mercurial moods causing it, either; they were surprisingly stable right now. No, the sheer force of Kurosaki’s Reiatsu, combined with the magnitude of his Bankai, was enough to worry the scholar. Things were about to get ugly, fast.
It didn’t help that it was impossible to move Sorak at the moment; there was no way to completely flee this battle and ensure an alliance with Redemption. Sure, Schultz could get away with the Fullbringer and keep the Xcution connection, but there was too much to be lost if the other alliance decided to side with the Soul Society, putting Hueco Mundo at a potential disadvantage. Schultz didn’t care much for this war between the two sides, but he knew that he would end up getting involved should the war move to Heuco Mundo and Las Noches, and that would be particularly troublesome for his research. Imagine if damage were to come to his library; all that knowledge, lost in the fires of battle? That would be a tragedy in itself.
Well, that meant that Kurosaki had to be dealt with, whether he had to be contained or killed. Schultz knew the odds were bad; he had no information on this Bankai, but from the sheer feeling of Reiatsu in the air, it was powerful. This would have to be handled delicately, or Schultz and the Hollow would be taken out, not to mention Heuco Mundo’s alliances, and that certainly wouldn’t be the best ending for the Espada’s life. No, he was going to fight Kurosaki and win, or at least escape with the Fullbringer in tow should worse come to worst. But for now, he had to focus on a way to assist the Hollow in its consumption of the Shinigami, whatever it took.
When the Hollow renewed its attack, Schultz created a confusing illusion that wasn’t centered on Kurosaki, so that it affected everything but the target. To all but the Hollow, the creature would vanish and several copies of it would appear from all directions to attack Kurosaki. Hundreds of the tendrils that it had revealed before shot from each of the Hollow illusions, stabbing outward in an unpredictable pattern that would leave Kurosaki unable to escape a massive mesh of them, stabbed to death… if they weren’t an illusion. As it was, Schultz was aiming to create whatever distractions he could in order to allow the Hollow to strike effectively. This was but the first part of his plan, and he had several more tricks in order to leave Kurosaki open to attack.
An offshoot of his earlier sound tactic came earlier, a brief but loud noise akin to an explosion ringing in Kurosaki’s ears only, sounding like it had come from behind him. The illusion was dropped as soon as the sound was finished, so that even if Kurosaki’s stubbornness pushed him through the illusions, he’d find that this one had faded too quickly even for him to break apart. When he realized that there was nothing to break through, it would serve as a potential distraction. If Kurosaki took his attention away from the Hollow for even a moment, it could strike a lot harder than he expected. The Hollow’s powers were vast, and the creature was merciless; left to its devices it would murder Kurosaki.
But that wasn’t the only plan in effect. While Kurosaki was dealing with the Hollow and the potential distraction, Schultz had already moved via Sonido, putting himself above the Shinigami. A Cero Viga would rain down from above, the crimson Reiatsu streaming down in a powerful beam to engulf Kurosaki if he didn’t move to avoid it. The combination of attacks would come within seconds, so fast that it might be difficult to avoid them all. Would Kurosaki, despite his powerful Bankai, be able to survive?
