There was a nip in the air, and the average person would be complaining about the weather and wearing a few extra layers of clothing. Not so Munemasa Iroka. Then again, she was not what one would consider as average. Personally, she loved the cold weather, and could not understand why people were griping about the fact that the summer was gone. Dressed in her normal Shinigami outfit, she waltzed through the streets of Rukongai in a happy mood. She was even whistling a tune as she skipped, almost childlike, along the relatively empty street.
With the style of her Shinigami uniform, it was expected that she was supposed to be cold. But with her high rate of metabolism, Iroka not only had a fondness for colder weather, but even some limited resistance to the cold. Perhaps the cold offered two different advantages. Firstly, she was feeling a lot more comfortable, for reasons which have been explained. Secondly, the fact that someone seemed so unbothered by the cold was perhaps a sign that this person was not the average Jane who could be mugged on a lonely street.
Of course, in a number of areas of Rukongai, even hearing talk about mugging would have been met with shock, terror even. The whitewashed 'inner' districts of Rukongai were so quiet and peaceful, and crime was a thing people used to scare unruly children. But crime became more visible as one traveled outward. By the time one got to Sabitsura, the 64th District in East Rukongai, one had to be a tough, or look like one, as well as know a few, to avoid being shaken up for valuables. Of course, the districts further out were even worse.
There were stories that in the outermost districts, there were people so forged by the hardships that they could even fight against the Shinigami. There were also stories of strange things that lived beyond the outermost areas of Rukongai, of hollows on the prowl, of weird and terrible beasts. It was a wonder that people had not all immigrated to the safer districts. But that was Iroka thinking, and she was the kind of person that liked order and peace. There were many that didn't. Hopefully, Iroka would not have to meet any such here, and if she did, hopefully she would be able to scare them off without a fight.
Her reason for coming to Sabitsura was simple. She was on the hunt for more assets left hidden in plain sight by her parent, Kimyou. Ever since the arrest of her parent, and her entry into the Academy, Iroka had always longed to know more about who she was, and the details of her coming to be. She had gotten to discover, thanks to the uncovering of clues left by her parent, that after Kimyou had been incarcerated for unethical science, their assets had been confiscated by Seireitei, and their lab in Rukongai had been shut down.
To be more accurate, one of their labs. Admittedly, that had been Kimyou's biggest lab, but the amoral Shinigami whom Iroka called parent had other more hidden things: one or two smaller but perhaps still functional labs, caches of information and supplies, blueprints, diaries and details of future plans. Kimyou had not revealed these to the Gotei 13, but Iroka had been able to uncover one or two things, owing to the fact that she had been with Kimyou to a few of these hidden sites before, and some of these left clues to the existence and locations of others.
On this beautiful cold day, Iroka had come to Sabitsura to hunt for one of these assets. Chances were slim that she would find anything, but there had been a hint of something possibly in Sabitsura, said hint being in a little asset cache that Iroka had recently managed to uncover. It would not hurt to check Sabitsura, and if she found nothing, at least she had done some exploration. But Iroka was sure that the more she found out about herself, the more effective she would be... okay, maybe that wasn't true, but who didn't want to know more about themselves?
