Letting out a sigh, Maki turned off her alarm clock and prepared herself for work. At the early morning hours of 5 am. Why her food job started so early was a mystery for her, but since it was the start of her shift, she needed to be there, regardless of what she thought of the matter. After so many months of waking up at this time, you would think her body would’ve adapted to the early morning hours. It had not. She was still tired every time she was forced to wake up for her shift, regardless if she got eight hours of sleep or three. Her body cared not either way.
Showering, brushing her teeth, and putting on her work outfit only took Maki around twenty minutes. It used to take her longer, but she had managed to shave the minutes down the more she worked. Which meant she could wake up a little later and use that tiny amount of extra time to get more sleep. Even though it wasn’t much, every minute counted in her opinion. Still didn’t help the black bags starting to form underneath her eyes. It was nothing a little makeup couldn’t cover, so she didn’t mind too much.
Opening the front door quietly so she didn’t wake her mother, Maki grabbed her bike and headed off to work. Currently she was working at the Stellar Platy, a restaurant that specializes in selling fish and other similar items. They also had a cute platypus mascot with a background filled with stars behind it, symbolizing the night sky. It was pretty neat, even if the name was a little weird. They also did deliveries, hence the reason she was here. At first she worked as a waiter, but by becoming a delivery driver, she was able to get some exercise in as well. Which was always a good thing.
Also thanks to the tall frame, she tended to unnerve the customers whenever she took their orders. A muscular woman on the taller side was a rarity in Karakura it seemed. Unfortunate, but that was just the way things were. Her shift this week was quite intense, giving her a 40 hour workweek, 8 hours a day. She had the weekends off, but her weekdays were booked. And she had to stay late most of the time which meant more money but less time. She didn’t mind though, specifically because she needed money. She had spotted a weapons shop that interested her, but the pricing was pretty high. But with the hours she was taking, she was sure she’d have enough money to purchase something relatively soon.
As Maki biked on the sidewalk at a moderate pace, she closed her eyes as the cool wind brushed through her hair and caressed her cheeks. The weather was getting colder, but it would still be a few more weeks until she needed to put on more layers. For now, it gave her a pleasant sensation as her constant biking began to work up a sweat. She’d be doing this for the next eight hours at the least, so the breeze was a blessing. And after biking for a few more minutes, she finally arrived at her place of work, ready to begin her long day of deliveries.
Heading inside, Maki glanced around the restaurant for her manager Kobeni. And sure enough, her short blackhaired boss was currently organizing boxes that contained supplies they’d use throughout the day. “Kobeni, I’m here for my shift.” Receiving a nod and a tired smile in return, Maki listened quietly as her boss told her what was expected of her for today. Since they had no orders yet, Maki would help organize and tidy up the store for the time being. Once the orders started coming in, she’d stop and start delivering. Basically the usual.
Heading into the bag and grabbing some cleaning supplies, Maki started on wiping down the tables. While the majority were already cleaned from whoever was on shift last evening, there was a chance they missed a spot. And since the Stellar Platy prided itself in cleanliness and efficiency, Maki needed to make sure everything was wiped down and clean. It was better to clean too much rather than too little. At least that was what Kobeni kept telling her.
The next half hour went by cleaning with Maki clearing the lobby of any trash and dirt. The tables were scrubbed until they shined and the chairs were arranged so that they were pleasing to the eye. Once the cleaning was done, she grabbed the broom to sweep up the dirt she wiped on the ground. She paid particular attention to the spaces underneath the table and between corners, as that was where most of the dirt gathered. After doing this for all the tables, it was time for deliveries.
Grabbing the box of food from the chefs, Maki placed it in her special bag that kept the food whatever temperature it was supposed to be at. Currently it was a hot temperature since the customer she was headed to ordered some type of dish consisting of rice and fish with some special sauce on top. Securing the bag properly on her bike, she pulled out her phone and typed in the address. According to her phone, it was only fifteen minutes away. But if Maki pushed herself she was sure she could get it there in ten.
Hopping on her bike, Maki began her journey. Since she prided herself in her speed, she immediately started pedaling as fast as she could. Her muscles weren’t just for show, and she easily displayed it by zooming down the empty streets. It was a little dangerous riding this fast, but she was used to it. Plus it was still relatively early, so not many people would be on the roads. Even if there were, she’d be able to avoid them. She hadn’t had an accident so far in her career, and she didn’t think she ever would since she was still relatively careful.
Time passed by quickly as she biked, and soon she arrived at the customer’s home. Early, just as planned. Grabbing her bag, Maki headed up to the front door and rang the doorbell. Once it was answered, she handed over the food before returning to her bike and heading back to the restaurant. Since the food was delivered, she rode back at a casual pace to regain some of her strength. She could feel a slight burn in her legs, but she was sure the pain would disappear by the time she got back. One delivery down, many more to go.
