So. Thought. Entirely self serving notion, but a thought all the same. Would there be a way to create the Shinigami Research and Development Institute, like in the series? We sort of lump it into Squad 12 here, but it was always presented as a separate entity. Why not make that a thing? Individuals who make Shinigami can sign up for it, join like any other Squad. Rather than do fights, individuals would do assigned tasks and missions from the Research Head. It'd be an NPC, Mod run thing. Someone in the group sends the Mod(s) a message, and asks for an assignment. They get something as specific or as general as the Mod chooses to provide. Then they make a thread based off the suggestion, and complete it like an assignment. Mods would grade their assignment work like any other thread, so nothing complex there.
As a reward for this particular type of thread, the participant can choose a newer variety of rewards. Maybe the thread counts as two or three, for the purposes of SKP? Maybe it gives bonus TP towards a specific Technique being developed for the Institute? Maybe they receive an item from the shop with significance/connection to the assignment. An item that might be worth way more than the Ryo pay out for the thread would be? Nothing major, just little incentives due to the unique nature of the thread.
Even better than slightly improved rewards, penalties. Maybe there are penalties for failing to complete the assignment? Maybe there are points like War Points, except they must be monitored by an individual. Failing to complete assignments can actually deplete these points, down to 0. 0 being where they would start. The points would reflect the quality of member the individual is. Keeping them up would have returns of respect or character recognition; both in an out of character maybe? Those points could also allow SRDI members to accept harder, more valuable assignments. Harder assignments carrying bigger rewards and penalties.
Maybe there are a few ranked positions, up to 3 at most, but the only way to get them is to have these points. Rather than fight; which might not fit the theme of the character, these points determine the spot holder. Completing assignments for the Institute helps it; therefore, those who help most earn their positions. There could even still be fights in which the points are wagered. Winning would give you points, and take them from your opponent as well...they might not be enough to give you the spot, but could bridge the gap! Or, they could create a massive gap between an established member and threatening talent. Both parties would set the wager before proceeding with the fight, assuming they are in agreement. Whatever one wagers, so must the other. They can't wager more points than they have. Also, people are still able to deny the challenge if they don't accept the opponent's wager. All of this would play into a more competitive, "the talent should succeed" aspect...and honestly, even scientists can wager their credibility in nonscientific challenges. As a note there; I bet Neil D. Tyson could eat way more fucking hot dogs than Carl Sagan. Oh, and Bill Nye stands alone.
Either way, suggestion away. I'd love input rather than votes...so...there is nowhere to vote.
