A Joint Training thread between the Rogue Garret and the Failure Nathan. The unstable being has happened upon the Rogue one evening, unaware of what sort of world he was about to be thrust into.
What day was it? It seemed impossible to keep track of the days anymore. Each was the same, each was no different. When the world was basked in the warmth of the sunlight there was peace. There was travel. New sights to see, new rivers to cross. Everything was at peace. Night, however, brought the exact opposite. Night brought survival. Night brought war. It was nearing that time. The time in which the sun dipped below the horizon and traded its spot in the sky with the moon. When light would vanish and be replaced with darkness. It was nearing that time once again. The time of battle.
Resting against a fallen log was one man. Draped in a brown leather cape as if it was a blanket was a single man. Resting on the log to his side was a weapon. Anyone looking at it would say it was a sword from its shape. But how could it have been a sword? It was too large, looked to be too heavy and too rough. No, it was more like a slab of iron. A slab of iron over six feet in length. It was monstrous. The white haired man who rested beside the sword seemed to be asleep, his only visible eye shut.
Garret wasn't asleep though. This close to dusk he would never fall asleep. He was resting, yes. Resting his eye to be more specific. While he wasn't going to fall asleep his body would appreciate the rest. The swordsman had a much faster rate of endurance recovery than most people, meaning he didn't need to rest as long as other people. It was quiet. The only sounds Garret heard was the sudden wind blowing across the grass. He was wrapped up in his cloak so the cold bite of the wind wouldn't reach his skin.
It was quiet. So very quiet. A quiet that Garret appreciated. A quiet that was needed. The fire inside him was still burning, but not in the way that it would at night. That flame of anger, of hatred, that wanted nothing more than to consume everything that made Garret hurt. The flame that sought to devour the Hollows for what they took from him. For a split second Garrets lip began to curl, one hands fingers tightening around the cloak, before he calmed down and resumed relaxing.
The sudden sound of footprints though caught his attention. They weren't heavy like a Hollows, rather soft in fact. Like a person. Opening his eye Garret gazed up at the person who had appeared from seemingly nowhere. Garret had not seen a living being in a long time and so he said the most straightforward thing he could "What do you want?"

Colors are a weird thing. They’re pretty, yes, but they’re also very pro-segregation. After all, every kid has a favorite color and they just wear it whenever they can. They pick candy of the same color, as well as backpacks and fruits and just about anything you can think of. It’s easy to divide the world into categories based just on the color. The sky and ocean are blue. The clouds are white. The grass and plants are green. The list could go on and on. And while color can make things more appealing, it can also cause the same item to draw disgust. It doesn’t matter how expensive, luxurious, or fast a car is if it’s a vomit green. No body’s driving that hunk of junk. But paint it a slick silver or steel black or electric red and it’s going to draw some positive attention.
Now, this whole concept of how powerful color could be never occurred to Nathan before. He was a simple minded kid with simple ideas going through his head, like pixie sticks or rainbows or saying goodnight to the moon or finding his Dad and starting a Super Hero group with him. You know, regular things that kids think about. So you could imagine when he heard about the white people that lived in the west. Since when were people separated by skin? What made them different from the others in Japan? Oh, Nathan’s curiosity was definitely invoked and he had to get a good view of the white people.
And if that wasn’t bad enough, another thought occurred to him. Nathan’s skin was white. He was pale, like a ghost but alive (or so he thought). His skin had absolutely no pigment. Even the world’s albinos would consider him by far the whitest person they had ever laid eyes on, though the world’s albino’s wouldn’t be able to see Nathan. Most people couldn’t see him because he was ‘special.’ And one of the special things about him was his pale skin. But now, he heard rumors about the ‘white people,’ who he assumed also had very pale skin. Maybe they were related to him. Maybe they were his brothers and sisters, though Asuka never mentioned any more children. Oh, he had to go find out.
And so Nathan did some research on the white people. After listening in on some human conversations as well as even reading a couple of things, Nathan actually did learn. He discovered that the white people were called ‘you’re-a-peeings.’ Maybe they had to go a lot. Sometimes, Nathan was like that. He’d eat some candy and drink some water, and then he’d suddenly have to go really, really badly. But he never wet himself. No sir, that wasn’t Nathan. He was out of his diapers and his pants had stayed dry for the past seven months and counting. He was on a role, and Nathan wasn’t going to let any loose bladder ruin his record, even as he slept. Maybe he could teach the white people how to hold it until they could find some place to go.
Maybe he could teach white people about how the moon is nocturtle too. Oh, they were going to learn so much from Nathan. He was going to be their teacher, like Mister Christ. Nathan heard a lot about Mister Christ and people wanted to learn from him and be just like him. Nathan was going to be the new Mister Jesus Christ to the white people and they would write a book about him and love him and ask ‘What would Nathaniel do?’ Yes, they would call him Nathaniel because it was formal and if Nathan was going to be a teacher, he had to be professional.
Wait, then they would have to call him Mister Tan’O instead. But that would get confusing because they might call Nathan’s Dad Mister Tan’O too. Unless they called Shinsei Daddy Tan’O. Yeah, that would work. Unless… what about when Nathan became a daddy? Then they could call Shinsei Grandpa Tan’O. But Nathan wasn’t going to get married. He didn’t want yucky cooties all over him. Then he’d have to shower every five minuets just to scrub them off and that’d be annoying.
So, the child had decided to travel to Europe, which wasn’t difficult because airport security had no clue that an invisible child-bomb walked right by them and onto the nearest plane to Latvia. Nathan had never been on a plane before, so the trip was thrilling. He kept looking at the window to see clouds, the ocean, and a lot of mostly empty land. It was a long plane ride, so the child spent much of it in a borderline coma after crashing on a dangerously powerful sugar high.
Upon arriving, Nathan was disappointed to find little difference between himself and the locals, but its possible that he hadn’t found the white people yet. With a new temporary goal in mind, the child set out of the city and began traveling by foot in the eastern European land. He passed meadows and forests after a full week of travel without finding anything appealing. Just as he was starting to believe that the ‘white people’ were a myth, he came across something strange.
A figure covered with a blanket was lying on one of the uprooted trees, apparently taking a nap. What a weird man. It wasn’t even nighttime yet, so it couldn’t be his bedtime. Maybe he was confused? Nathan’s mommy got confused all the time, so there wasn’t anything wrong with it. Nathan was almost always confused, too. Maybe he and the man could work together to be not-confused. Or maybe they would be confused together. Either way, Nathan would try to help him.
But maybe the man could help Nathan. Maybe he knew where the pale child could find the ‘white people.’ “Hey Mister!” Nathan called to the sleeping figure in his innocent voice. He hoped to wake Garret up. “Mister! Do you know where the white people are?” And immediately after asking such a random question, Nathan suddenly digressed, shooting another question at the Rogue without even giving him time to respond. “Is it your bedtime? You should really wake up if it isn’t and have fun, but if it is, then go to sleep. So is it?”
Nathan knew that Garret wasn’t human. He could detect his reiatsu and was sure that he wasn’t a normal guy. But that didn’t alarm the child at all. He only saw good in the world and expected no harm from the sleeping man. If anything, the man was in more danger than Nathan. It wasn’t safe to sleep outside when it was almost nighttime. That’s what his mommy said, at least. Nathan looked over Garret with childish curioisity when his eyes fell upon the giant buster blade lying next to the man. “WOAH,” he exclaimed enthusiastically. “That’s a really cool sword, Mister. I’ve never seen a sword that big.” Give the kid a few more years and a couple of bad influences and he would have noticed a sexual innuendo in his words.
There went whatever peace the cursed swordsman had. There went the rest he could have had before the sun set. How could the child have known, though? He didn't know his words would have bothered the swordsman so. Garret closed his eye, desperate to simply block the child out and ignore him. It was obvious he had not a single thing worth saying. He was nothing more than a nuisance.
Even as he continued to prattle on it was surprising that the child could not sense Garrets growing discomfort. All the Rogue expected was a "how do you do" and then to go off on his merry way. Not a rapid tongued child. However, Garrets patience was pushed to its limit at the sudden mention of his weapon. The child did not try to hide his surprise once he took in the size of Garrets blade.
Though, could something so gargantuan even be called a sword anymore? Far too large to be a sword. Too the normal person it was far too heavy, needing at least four full grown men to even lift it. It was obvious the sword was not sharp, the edges too rough. It was more like a slab of iron than steel. Yet despite these things it was wielded like a sword.
That weapon was stained. It reeked of an odor that only those whose blood it drank could smell. It reeked of death. That blade, that single monstrous blade, was used to slay the beasts that came for him at night. That sword would end their lives and stop their souls. Though, that weapon came with a cost.
The sword was only one part of the weapon that Garret wielded. It was one part of two. Garret wielded a cursed sword. A weapon that had him teetering upon the very precipice of life and death. The other half existed behind the eyepatch he wore, hidden away behind a layer of burnt skin. The entity had yet to awaken its true potential, but it still had no problem feeding off of Garrets life force.
Back to the matter at hand though, Garrets nap was officially ruined. This child had made quite a racket, and Garret had had enough. With a grunt the swordsman stood up, the robe he used as a blanket patly falling off his body and hanging limply off the side of his shoulder. This man was big.
Not just big as in tall. But big everywhere. His body could best be described as a mountain of meat. Or a mountain of cut meat, as his exposed chest was riddled with scars of different size and shape. His arms were thick and large, almost like the branches of the great redwood trees. Garret looked down on Nathan, before simply closing his eyes and bending down.
He grasped a single hand around the hilt of his mighty sword, and with no sound or sign of struggle he lifted it and placed it against his back. A small hook on the back of Garrets attire caught the chain link on the sword. Without a word he began to walk away from Nathan, heading in no direction in particular except away.
Night was coming soon. It was best that he moved away from the child now, less he be caught up in the coming battle. It wasn't Garrets concern if the child was eaten, but regardless he wanted to move away. "Do not follow me." Garret said just loud enough for the child to hear as the swordsman continued walking through the field.

Nathan didn’t receive an answer to any of his questions, which bothered him. But the man just might be tired and if it was his bedtime, then he was bound to be cranking. Oh no, Nathan was making him cranky. All the child wanted was a friend to talk to and play with, but he can’t just go waking up a random man with a big sword. That wasn’t fair to his friend. No, it was time Nathan had to go and let the man be.
“I’m sorry, Mister, I didn’t realize you were slee-“ The child suddenly cut himself off as he watched the man rise to his feet. “Oh, nevermind, you’re awake!” Yay, the man could play now and Nathan wouldn’t be bothering him. Hm, what games should they play? There’s always monopoly, but you need a board for that and Nathan couldn’t fit anything that big in his Spongebob backpack. Hide-and-go seek is always fu-
“WOAH!” the child exclaimed as he stared straight up at the figure of the man that towered over him. And he thought the sword was big. What if it’s not that the man is big or the sword is big, but Nathan is just really small. No, but other adults he’s seen weren’t that huge. This guy was different. And he had such a big sword. But for him, the sword must feel normal sized since he’s just huge.
Nathan’s glowing violet eyes looked up at the Rogue with admiration as Garret lifted his blade with ease, placing it on his back. “Mister, you’re really strong. I’ve seen lots of people with swords, but yours is ginormous!” The child waved his arms in enthusiastic, radical gestures to make it clear to Garret how big his sword is, in case it wasn’t obvious to the man before Nathan brought it up.
“Mister, are you a super hero?” Nathan had a thing with super heroes. He’s not one of those Batman-obsessed children, though he did love Batman. The child created a fantasy in his mind of his Father as a super hero. Shinsei Tan’O was Super Shinsei, and he went around kicking bad guy butt and saving the world and coming back home to him and Mommy only when the world finally safe.
“My dad’s a super hero, Mister. He’s the greatest. Maybe you know him? Do you know my daddy?” The child stayed right on Garret’s feet as he walked away, often switching to his left and right sides as he jog circles around the man. He was going to tire himself out soon, but that didn’t matter to him. He was having too much fun with his friend. “What’s your name, Mister. Or if you want to protect your secret identity, tell me your super hero name.”
The child began looking ahead to where Garret was taking them, but he couldn’t see a nearby final destination. “Um, Mister, where are we going? I came here to meet the white people. Do you know where I can find them?” Nathan didn’t care that he had already asked that question. In fact, he didn’t care that Garret didn’t answer it the first time. He had already forgotten about that and moved on. Now, he hoped that try number two would get Garret to budge.
“You’re awful quiet, Mister. You’ve got a really deep voice, too. Does it hurt to talk. Is that why you don’t talk a lot?” Nathan tried to imagine what it was like having a deep, mellow voice but he couldn’t imagine it coming naturally to anyone. In as deep a voice as he could pull off, he said, “I have a deep voice to-“ Nathan didn’t get a chance to finish before he broke into a fit of coughs. Forcing a low, raspy voice wasn’t exactly light on his throat.
And that’s when it occurred to Nathan. How was this man supposed to be his friend if Nathan didn’t even tell him his name? Where were his manners? “Oh, Mister, I’m Nathan! Nathan Tan’O.” He said it like he was proud of his name and there wasn’t another name in the world that was better than his. And as far as he was concerned, his name was the only one he wanted to have.
